More than a shower curtain: consider it a blank canvas.

Another creation from design collaborative Grain, this DIY Shower curtain kit (called Ty, $33) encourages you to embrace your inner grizzly, unicorn, or whatever inspires your permanent marker (included; comes in black, blue or green).

The plain white shower curtain is made from 100% High-Density Polyethylene, one of the most commonly recycled and PVC-free plastics available today, and strung up on nickel-plated brass grommets. The refillable non-toxic magic marker is comprised of 74% post-consumer waste material.

What we love about Grain is that their products are created with sustainability in mind, either in the Pacific Northwest or in collaboration with artisan communities in Guatemala. They also donate a percentage of their annual revenue to The Organic Seed Alliance, PCC Farmland Trust, The Nature Conservancy, and the National Park Foundation.

Build yourself a screen of upcycled Spool at home or office to create some privacy.

Founded in 2007 at the Rhode Island School of Design, Grain is “a collaborative of design thinkers with the shared vision of a more sustainable future.”

Their build-it-yourself modular system, called Spool, can be assembled into a variety of freestanding structures such as screens, table bases or partitions. Made from paper spools upcycled from the Los Angeles apparel industry and connectors of chipboard, Spool is sold in kits of 240 spools and 520 connectors, which can build a structure about 55 in H x 40 in W x 7 in D. Each spool has a random graphic pattern that indicates which type of fiber they once held.
