White male privilege wins again

Casey Affleck, writer, director, and one of those alleged, gross, white men, won best actor at the 89th Oscar Awards.

Affleck’s win indicates that Hollywood truly gives zero fucks about the implications of honoring a man who has been accused of sexual harassment by two women.

Affleck’s win isn’t surprising—plenty of commentators predicted he’d win. But it’s the fact that actors and actresses alike were willing to vote for a man who allegedly harmed female coworkers that upsets us.

Those allegations

In 2010, a female producer and cinematographer for “I’m Still Here”, a film directed by Affleck, accused the actor of sexual harassment. The women filed lawsuits that alleged Affleck made sexual comments and inappropriate advances (they were civil suits, not criminal).

Affleck first threatened to countersue both his colleagues, but later decided to settle the lawsuits out of court.

Throughout the 2016/2017 award season, Affleck has managed to dodge questions concerning the allegations, and still won what’s considered the industry’s top award.

The statement

Since Affleck’s win, he’s made a public statement regarding the harassment situation that’s further irritated his critics.

“I believe that any kind of mistreatment of anyone for any reason is unacceptable and abhorrent, and everyone deserves to be treated with respect in the workplace and anywhere else,” Affleck told the Boston Globe in a post win interview.

“There’s really nothing I can do about it… Other than live my life the way I know I live it and to speak to what my own values are and how I try to live by them all the time.”

Oh, there’s nothing else you can do? We can think of a few things… Like, why not speak out against sexual harassment or make a donation (or lots of them) to domestic abuse survivor charities?

But I suppose if we’re being honest, we can’t be that surprised that Hollywood and Oscar voters are willing to cast aside a few allegations against a famous white guy.

Hollywood’s blindspot

Hollywood has always celebrated white men who prey on women.

Woody Allen has received support from the industry even though the writer, director, and actor has been accused of assaulting his own child (and marrying another).

Hollywood professionals routinely hire and support womanizing male writers and directors. The industry also has a habit of paying female actors less and not supporting female directed films.

Support kind artists

What will it take for the industry to change?

Well, for one, people could choose to not watch films that support white male jerks. Now, granted, Affleck’s accusers settled out of court and never filed criminal charges against Affleck, but like Lena Dunham’s character on HBO’s “Girls” pointed out last week (aptly the same night Affleck won the award), why would a woman make up accusations if they weren’t true? Accusing a high profile celebrity abuser can ruin the lives of the victims more often than the abuser. Their accusations elicit hate mail and death threats from devoted fans. It’s nothing short of a nightmare for the victims, which is inherently why women have been so hesitant to call out their abusers. Just look at what happened though when victims of Bill Cosby’s abuse started to stand up and be counted. It gave others the courage to share their story even though they’ve been dragged through the mud.

Sure, it stinks that it’s up to “us” to change an industry. But it isn’t difficult to patronize films written and directed by people who respect women, co-workers, and their audience. Because, let’s be honest: when a celebrity abuses anyone, it affects all of us. We’ve just got to be willing to stand up and say so.

“What is this magical hair you speak of,” you may be wondering. Well, The Hair is easy to find. Just flip on your set, or open your favorite streaming app, and surf until you find a sitcom that’s casted women aged 18-34 and you’ll see what we’re talking about.

And for those of you who don’t want to take the time to find what we’re talking about: Let us paint a word picture for you.

The Hair is long and flowing. It’s straight on top and features loose curls that fall a few inches below the shoulders. While most versions of The Hair are sans bangs, some versions, such as the kind worn by Zooey Deschanel, feature some fringe.

Now, there’s nothing actually wrong with this hairstyle. After all, it’s cute, photographs well, and is totally normal-inoffensive, even. It’s all these “Hair” attributes that make this hairstyle so ubiquitous.

Over at Racked, Cynthia Vanis, a hairstyle department manager for film and television studios, said the following about The Hair:

“Over the last couple of years, straight hair went out and embracing more of a curl or wave took over. Also, it’s so much more manageable with shooting. Straight hair moves a lot, and if one piece is out of place, you can totally tell. You can cheat easier when there’s more movement within the hair.”

Vanis also described The Hair as “super relatable and versatile” and “not specific,” AV Club reports.

Now, on the surface, those descriptors read completely harmless, but if you dig a bit deeper, they kind of are.

Because really, what real-life woman has perfect hair every single day of her life that also is considered perfectly relatable and versatile? These are the kind of standards society expects all women to reach every day of their lives.

Now, there’s nothing wrong with latching on to trends–and from the sound of what Vanis is saying, The Hair is just another Hollywood trend. But to portray The Hair as a beauty norm or “the ideal” is ridiculous. Sure, Hollywood hair departments aren’t the enemy; these stylists do what they have to do to ensure starlets look great at every angle.

But it would be nice if lady-entertainment-watchers could see different hairstyles on television and in movies. No woman is the same and while all of us know this, it’s a bit problematic that something labeled inoffensive is so frequently used.

And yeah, we realize that “Diversity Issue #1” is to get more women of color, women who are different sizes, and transgender actors in prominent roles, but we still wish that beauty and hairstyles could become more diverse, too.

Apparently, some incredibly misguided folks in Hollywood (big surprise there) told Rousey during a fitting for a television commercial that she might want to lose weight. She discussed it in a New York Times piece.

News like this is, sadly, no surprise. Hollywood — heck, even everyday folks — hold women and men, and boys and girls to an impossible weight-standard. And although there are plenty of Hollywood stars who have spoken out on the subject, and have even condemned the people and companies who support these impossible standards, nothing ever seems to change.

Let’s quickly look at just a few of the people who have been called fat by media, an executive, or some other blowhard:

1. Gabourey Sidibe, actress, received a lot of fat shaming when she walked the red carpet during the 2014 Golden Globes.

2. Yes, fat shaming doesn’t just happen to women… singer Sam Smith was called fat and ugly by Howard Stern of all people.

3. After giving birth, singer Kelly Clarkson was called fat by Katie Hopkins, a media personality. Hopkins tweeted the following about the singer:

“Jesus, what happened to Kelly Clarkson? Did she eat all of her backing singers? Happily I have wide-screen.”

Classy.

4. Tyra Banks was called fat by tabloids. The media “fat-shaming” came after some photos of the model relaxing on the beach surfaced.

5. Prince Fielder, baseball player, was mocked after he posed nude for ESPN The Magazine’s 2014 Body Issue. The jokes were aimed at him because he’s a larger athlete. Because, duh, people who are bigger couldn’t possibly be athletic.

All of these examples were originally reference by Identities.Mic. The article also references five other gross instances where people were body shamed and mocked for being larger or gaining weight, too.

So, what’s left to do? Keep fighting these stupid stereotypes and ignorant jokes, apparently. And luckily, that’s just what Rousey intends to do.

According to The Times, Rousey responded to the unwelcome weight comments quite well. She ignored them and decided to do the commercial as she was. The ad went off without a hitch and Rousey was successful. She ended that portion of the Times interview by stating: “‘I swear to God,’ she said, shaking her head, ‘if anyone calls me fat one more time in my life, I’m going to kill them.'”

Ronda, please don’t kill people. You will not do us any good behind bars.

Even though we don’t love murder jokes, we’re still happy that she feels that way about her body now, because according to The Times Rousey didn’t always have such a healthy perspective about her body or weight. When Rousey was a teenager, she suffered from a lot of body image issues. Many of those problems stemmed from the judo weight limits she had to reach when competing. This stress caused her to struggle with bulimia.

According to The Times, “her body didn’t match the ideal she saw in men’s magazines, and going to school in Los Angeles, she would wear zip-up jackets even on 90-degree days. ‘I was afraid to show my big arms,’ she said.”

Now, though, Rousey is determined to be the woman who isn’t always represented in the media. And we’re quite happy she’s willing to fill that role.

While we know that Rousey’s moxie and talent won’t stop the fat-shamers from shaming and the haters from hating, we do hope that her strong message makes those fools think twice before spewing their hateful words.

“Beneath the makeup and behind the smile I am just a girl who wishes for the world.” – Marilyn Monroe

In 2013, we’re a lot more aware of where diamonds come from, and the dumb blonde act isn’t so cute anymore—but we still can’t resist the charms of Marilyn Monroe. In Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, one of her most iconic roles, Marilyn played Lorelei Lee, a woman with a passion for diamonds who saw bagging a rich guy as the only way a woman could succeed in the ’50s. Aside from Marilyn’s breathy sex appeal and comic chops, what we remember most about this film is her glamour: that perfect platinum coif, her flawless red lips and the figure-hugging costumes that are still mimicked all these years later. Here’s how to copy Marilyn Monroe’s vintage glam look with natural beauty products.

Marilyn Monroe Makeup: Red Lips and Illuminated Skin

Winged eyeliner, perfectly arched brows, scarlet lips and radiant skin came together into one trademark look that defines Hollywood glamour to this day. Marilyn always looked like she was glowing from within, yet there was never a flaw visible: no red spots, no undereye circles, no blemishes. Most of us aren’t starting with a perfect canvas, but we can fake it. Apply a light moisturizer to eliminate any dry spots and ensure an even application of foundation, and then cover any imperfections with a concealer like Josie Maran’s Argan Creamy Concealer Crayon or Jane Iredale’s Circle/Delete concealer, making sure to blend well.

Using a foundation brush (Eco Tools and Tarte offer cruelty-free options), apply a layer of light foundation. Then, use a highlighter stick along the tops of your cheekbones, down the center of your nose, and just below the arch of your eyebrows. Some quality organic options include W3LL People’s Universalist 2 Color Stick and Ilia Beauty’s Illuminator.

Winged eyeliner can be a little tricky if you’re not used to doing it, so follow along with a YouTube tutorial or two to practice. A swipe of red lipstick finishes off the look – check out our red-lip recommendations and tips.

Iconic Blond Curls: Recreating Marilyn’s Hair

Not everyone can achieve or pull off Marilyn’s pale platinum, but you can get the general effect with some rollers and volumizing products. You can try the pin curl method, which is what Marilyn did herself, as illustrated at Va-Voom Vintage Blog, or use the quicker modern method offered by XO Jane. To boost volume at the roots, try Intelligent Nutrients Organic Volumizing Spray, or Aveda’s Volumizing Tonic.

Forget Diamonds: The Finishing Touches

While there are plenty of ethical alternatives to blood diamonds, you don’t need anything that expensive to get Marilyn’s sparkly look. Raid thrift stores, vintage boutiques, Etsy and eBay for pre-loved costume jewelry – the hunt is part of the fun! The same goes for opera-length gloves.

Marilyn’s costumes in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes were so racy for the times, one particular deep-plunging gold dress didn’t make it past the censors. They were all designed to cling to her body in all the right places, showing off her curves. Look for vintage or vintage-style dresses with halter-style tops, nipped waists and flowing skirts that skim the hips.

Critics and audiences are buzzing about Fox Searchlight’s “12 Years a Slave,” which opens October 18th. Here are five reasons why you should see it.

“I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia, sons of former slaves and sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at a table of brotherhood,” Dr. Martin Luther King expounded on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial on August 28, 1963. “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.”

King’s iconic speech has become the cultural cornerstone for racial equality in the United States. But are we there yet? It’s what we aim towards, but at times seems like nothing more than an inspirational dream. After the 2008 election of the nation’s first African-American president, it seemed like you could sail away on the optimistic stream of hope about a colorless society.

    });

“The post-racial era, as embodied by Obama, is the era where civil rights veterans of the past century are consigned to history and Americans begin to make race-free judgments on who should lead them,” Daniel Schorr of NPR wrote in 2008. But then Schorr cautioned that “the nation may have a way to go yet to reach colorblindness.”

Five years later, I’m sure Trayvon Martin’s family would agree.

The United States is currently in a crisis of confidence when it comes to race. King’s dream seems just over the horizon, but still frustratingly out of reach. Why? The reasons make up a multitude of arguments and are endlessly debatable. But we can do without contest is to look backwards to examine the earliest origins of race in this country.

By understand where we’ve been, it is possible to see where we are going—and to maintain the growth towards King’s vision of an egalitarian world where people aren’t judged by race. If we face the most terrible parts of our history, we can begin to understand where we are today. And this way, perhaps we can steer the course to where we need to go and where so many of us deeply want to be.

“12 Years a Slave” is the movie to help us do that.

This movie is why cinema matters. It’s the true story of the life of Solomon Northup, a 19th-century free black man and musician from upstate New York who was kidnapped and sold into slavery in 1841. From acclaimed director Steve McQueen and writer John Ridley, “12 Years a Slave” conveys an eloquence and horror which has critics in a frenzy, calling it “extraordinary” and “surreal in its evil.”

Why, specifically, should we invest our time and money into it?

1. Because “there hasn’t been a filmed project that engages with the subject of slavery this deeply since the television miniseries Roots.”

Or so writes Kyle Buchanan over at Vulture, who believe the film will win Best Picture. This film offers us a time portal into the brutality of living as an enslaved African American like few have ever done before.

Peter Howell of the Toronto Star gushes “Believe the Oscar buzz. Britain’s Steve McQueen (Hunger, Shame) nails the horror of America’s slavery shame but also finds humanity in one man’s determination to free himself and return to his family.”

William Goss of Film.com rhapsodizes “Northup’s story was a true, terrible thing, and by virtue of telling it, the burdens of all American slaves are unflinchingly realized by Ejiofor and McQueen alike.”

2. Because director Steve McQueen is brilliant.

Coming off his win at of the People’s Choice award at the recent Toronto Film Festival for “12 Years a Slave,” Steve McQueen is said to be “deeply grateful” for the accolades his film is receiving. But this is not the first time the British director has wowed audiences.

In 2008, he received the first-time director, or Caméra d’Or Award at Cannes for “Hunger,” his depiction of the 1981 Irish hunger strike. His second major theatrical release, “Shame,” featuring “12 Years” star Michael Fassbender as a sex addict, also received likewise high praise in 2011 and 2012.

3. Because the performances will become iconic.

Chiwetel Ejiofor, who plays Solomon Northup in “12 Years a Slave,” gives a career-defining performance. As he told CBS News, “It sort of drifts away from being this complicated tale of these terrible times into really a story about the human spirit and I think everybody can connect to it.”

Brad Pitt, who also produced the film, plays a Canadian abolitionist. Michael Fassbender and Sarah Paulson are haunting as the Epps, a couple of impossibly cruel slave owners. Paul Giamatti, Benedict Cumberbatch, and Alfre Woodard and Paul Dano also have key roles.

Lupita Nyong’o, who plays horrifically-abused slave Patsey on the Epps plantation, has been called the break-out star of the film. As the native Kenyan actress told CTV News, “At the end of the day, Patsey was my reward and everything else is welcome and overwhelming and beautiful.”

4. Because it continues the dialogue on race in our society.

“12 Years a Slave” offers up an unflinching view of the atrocities committed in the name of commerce and culture from the African-American perspective. But acknowledging this horror bridges our understanding from all angles.

So where to go from here?

A national best-seller and winner of the National Book Award, Edward Ball’s “Slaves in the Family” continues the vital conversation. Written by the descendant of slave owners and traders in South Carolina, Edward Ball embarked on a quest to understand the intertwined history of his family and the black people they enslaved. What emerges is an incredibly insightful look at how race has shaped one family—and in turn, our country at large. This book is a fantastic companion piece to McQueen’s film.

5. Because it’s a true story.

“Twelve Years a Slave,” Northup’s real-life narrative detailing his abduction and life while enslaved, was published in 1853 in the United States to wide acclaim. Abolitionists and sympathizers rallied to the book, which sold 30,000 copies throughout the north on the eve of the Civil War.

Considered one of the best accounts of American slavery ever written by a slave, it was Northup’s “shrewd observations” which catapulted the narrative into the consciousness of the American public. It described the day-to-day life of a slave as never before seen, which helped fuel the atmosphere which eventually led to the destruction of this American institution.

Harriet Beecher Stowe, author of “Uncle Tom’s Cabin,” had this to say of the memoir: “It is a singular coincidence, that Solomon Northup was carried to a plantation in the Red River country—that same region where the scene of Uncle Tom’s captivity was laid—and his account of this plantation, and the mode of life there, and some incidents which he describes, form a striking parallel to that history.”

“12 Years a Slave” will be commercially released by Fox Searchlight in the United States on October 18th.

Want rippling abs, heaving bodices and more sex and magic than Vegas? Here’s why you should be watching “The White Queen.”

History has been ruined by the modern age of television—and it is glorious. Sure, there’s the occasional serious historical drama with traumatizing small pox vaccinations and naked Benjamin Franklin in the bath. (Hat tip: HBO’s “John Adams.”) These productions massage our brains like an NPR-podcast, making us smarter by proxy of Laura Linney’s historically-accurate brown teeth.

Then there are other dramas that dress history in chiseled abs, heaving bodices, and more scene-chewing than a badger in a woodshop. Ladies and a few gentlemen, meet “The White Queen.”

Starz’s import from across the pond tells the story of Britain’s War of the Roses, but through the eyes of the womenfolk. A period piece set during the 30-year feud between the House of Plantagenet, there’s lots of magnificent hair, explosive acting, and impeccably-lit sex scenes where proper hygiene is never an issue.

We start off following the life of Elizabeth Woodville, a commoner who married King Edward IV in 1464. Elizabeth was a 27-year-old widow of fertile breeding who once sweet-talked the king under a tree while begging for land rights or something non-bosomy. The King, a cable TV-handsome youth who appreciated a good plea for real estate, was bewitched—possibly literally.

Elizabeth and Edward secretly married, everyone freaked, and power struggles abounded for the next two decades.

Over the ten-episode arc, we follow Elizabeth and Edward, but also Anne Neville (Faye Marsay), the daughter of the “Kingmaker” Warwick, as well Margaret Beaufort (Amanda Hale), who is the mother of the future king, Henry Tudor.

Starz, which just started airing the first episodes, crows that the “The White Queen” is told through these three “different, yet equally relentless women.” But critics haven’t exactly loved the ten-part series, which The New York Times found seriously “not-as” interesting, sharp, compelling, layered or adventurous as HBO’s wildly-successful “Game of Thrones.”

Well, yeah, if you take it seriously. But shall we compare a direwolf to a house cat? We shall not, because we’d miss out on some of the best reasons to watch “The White Queen.”

1. The hair.

Sure, “The White Queen” may not be a cinematic masterpiece to regale the senses. But check out Janet McTeer’s hair. The impeccable McTeer plays Elizabeth’s mother, Jacquetta Woodville, a character who also believes herself to be descended from a river goddess and therefore, magical.

But Jacquetta isn’t the only woman sporting elaborate braids and a bitchy attitude. “The White Queen” is ripe with characters whose lives are ones of “love and lust, seduction and deception, betrayal and murder.” Its Alexis and Krystle all over again, this time in a coronets and combs.

2. The scene chewing.

Sure, “The White Queen” boasts Oscar-nominated names like Janet McTeer and British mainstays like James Frain. McTeer in particular makes you buy what she’s selling, so much so that you feel like you’re watching a completely different production when she steps on screen.

But sans McTeer, it’s acted by lesser-knowns who would be just at home on a CW shoot or sparkling it up as a brooding vampire/wolf/elf. This means you get dialogue like “You will have to wade through blood!” uttered by gorgeous faces that are not only historically-inaccurately washed but probably steam-cleaned and pressed.

The actors are hammy, hilarious, and no one has nightmares after an unexpected red wedding or castration. Everyone wins!

3. The lads.

Beefcake, be thy muse. The White Queen and her co-horts may flash Pilates-sculpted derrieres at will, but their rugged male conspirators are the real draw. It’s like casting hung up a brooding beacon, immediately drawing in every chiseled-jaw Brit with a SAG card.

There’s Anthony Rivers (Ben Lamb), Elizabeth Woodville’s brother, keen in the ways of courtly behavior and political struggles. There’s King Edward IV (Max Irons) a “fierce solider” who follows his heart. Sprinkle in various sculpted Dukes and we have a fantastic medieval Abercrombie and Fitch catalogue.

4. The magic.

Magic. Sex. Seeing. “The White Queen” has it all. Sure, it may be considered (to be read in hushed tones) pagan, but the women of the War of the Roses know how to make life magical when necessary.

Usually, this happens at conveniently-plotted expository moments, like when Elizabeth stares dramatically into a mirror, while a woman covered in blood stares back at her and she thinks it is her own blood.

Or Jacquetta, armed with ominous music, mysteriously knows that the Duchess Cecily, mother of Edward IV, is a common whore who lay with an archer and cuckolded her husband. But how does she know this?

5. The sexy sex.

Want more skin and moans? Then be sure to stay on the revolutionary side of the Atlantic, because the Starz version has a lot more bang for your buck.

As Kind Edward (Max Irons) himself told the Metro via The Daily Beast, “You get a lot more arse in the Starz version—the cameras kept rolling after the BBC stopped the scene.”

(See also: “tastefully shot but historically dubious soft-core porn.”)

“The White Queen” airs Saturdays at 9pm on Starz. You can watch the first episode free online.

Mysterious and sexy, Veronica Lake embodies the sophisticated film noir genre of Hollywood crime dramas the 1940s. Her iconic lock of wavy blond hair obscuring one eye is still an inspiration, nearly 75 years after her cinematic debut. In ‘This Gun For Hire,’ Lake was at her smoldering best. Here’s how to get this classic vintage look with pin curls, red lipstick and a little satin – all from natural beauty brands and eco fashion labels, of course.

Veronica Lake’s iconic 1940s Hollywood hair came about by accident, when a lock of hair fell into her eye during a promotional photo shoot. This unusual look helped skyrocket her to stardom, and women working less glamorous lifestyles clamored to channel her smoky, sauntering nightclub singer silhouette. In fact, her femme fatale hairstyle was so widely copied that the U.S. government asked her to change it, because it was seen as a health hazard to women who worked on assembly lines in factories during World War II. Lake demurred, and appeared in Life magazine demonstrating how long waves could get caught in equipment.

But there’s certainly no hazard in wearing this look to cocktail parties and on dates, unless you consider an extraordinary amount of attention dangerous. Here are three steps to the film noir look for hair, makeup and accessories.

Iconic Hair: Soft Side-Swept Waves

Veronica Lake’s ‘peekaboo’ hairstyle was achieved with pin curls and a heavy side part. You could still get this look the traditional way – The Stylist Quo has a step-by-step tutorial that’ll spell out exactly how. But if a curling iron is more your speed, check out the instructions at The Beauty Department. It’s easier than you might think.

Smooth those waves with a little glossing product like Feed Your Shine by Yarok, and hold them in place with a natural hairspray that comes out in a fine mist rather than a spritz – try Giovanni’s L.A. Hold.

Makeup: Cheekbones and Red Lips

Natural brows, enhanced cheekbones and red lips are Veronica Lake’s trademark makeup looks. Use just a little bit of brow product like Josie Maran’s Magic Brows to add definition and swipe some mascara onto your lashes. Keep your eye makeup light to balance the bold red lip.

Ilia Beauty lipstick in Wild Child has a semi-matte finish in a fiery shade of red, or you could go with the darker Femme Fatale. Finally, use a little bit of bronzer just under your cheekbones to draw them out, making sure to blend well for a natural beauty effect.

Accessories: Turban and Trenchcoat

Wearing an actual satin dress from the 1940s along with the hair and makeup might look a bit too much like a costume. Instead, choose elements from Lake’s classic look to integrate into your own. A halter-style dress or something in low-cut satin would be a subtle tribute, or you could rock a turban like Lake’s character Ellen Graham. You can find vintage ones on Etsy, or get a sleeker, more modernized version in organic cotton by REIF at Craft and Culture.

And of course, no look could epitomize film noir better than a slim-fitting trench coat. Check out the Jonano Organic Hemp Denim Mini Trench Coat for an updated option, or have some fun poring through vintage boutiques.
