Effortlessly sexy? A thrown together look that can go from day to night?

I love this Alternative Apparel silk and modal cardigan for its sheerness and earthly hue. The only thing I would suggest is to leave the last couple buttons open on the bottom of the cardigan, so you don’t have pulling like in this photo. On sale for $37.

There is a point with slouchiness where you need structure. Though you may not be a fan of skinny jeans or leggings, a pair of these 7 For All Mankind jeans is a nice combo of the two into a jegging of the sort. The length of the cardigan hides your behind if you’re worried about tight jeans (in the wrong places). On sale for $84.

These Melissa wedges lengthen your legs in those skinny jeans and add a lustre with their recycled plastic and woven toe area, bringing your downtown vibe just a little more street cred.

We’ve been going pretty safe up until now, and safe can mean boring if you’re not careful. This is fine if you’re out in the mountains picking apples (wearing worn in flats with this outfit mind you) but let’s make pretend you’re not. This Matt and Nat Studded Envelope Bag is your secret spice. Wear it with or without the chain strap. On sale for $102.

Maybe we should have started with these earrings from DLC Brooklyn. From these simple gold chains drips slouch sexiness from the start, passing into sheer, then structured, studded and shiny. You have lengthened yourself and I bet, are still really comfortable.

I’m imagining you with a windswept up-do like you just got out of bed, soft pink lips and rosy cheeks. I can’t stop looking at you and neither will the handsome men who pass.

Jeggings: The season’s hot pants give new meaning to OMG! Optimum mailable garment? Over my girth? Omnipresent mod gear?

I could go on and on, but I will spare you, and simply rant about how the stretchiest jeans for a body-fluctuating planet are an inescapable fashion feature this fall – one  invading my space as I prepare my daughters for the school year. Enough is enough. I’m jegging for mercy.

New York Magazine calls it a “collision of trends” – fitted denim meets the leggings phenomenon. If you haven’t heard about it yet, you probably aren’t hip to the 2010 runway: Fifties calf-grazing skirts, lace-up equestrian boots, gauzy tunics and gypsy Gothic black tiered gowns. In other words, you in the dark!

“I’m so sick of salespeople explaining to us that jeggings are jeans+leggings and saying how great they are,” kvetches my high school-bound daughter, adding, “I’ve been wearing them since 5th grade!”

True, I was ahead of the times, and bought her a pair of black stretch  jeans with pockets back then, a style that conjured my own beloved 60s peddle pushers. Like jeggings, the black slacks + tights (slights?) were cute under little dresses.

Four years later, skinny-jean-worshiping teens and tunic-clad matrons are drawn to jeggings for the same reasons: They are even skinnier than skinny jeans because they adhere like Crazy Glue to the torso and limbs. They also fit all body types and help suck in the territory Spanx won’t go. They are great for layering and also serve to reveal an enviable hard body when flaunted sans the trusty tunic.

Forget color fads. Girl, give me some Spandex and poly knit that acts like them skinny pants, and I will work it in any shade.

The possibilities are endless, and so, jeggings have jogged their way to retail racks and rounders from Bloomies and Nordstrom (Hue makes them in corduroy) to American Eagle (second pair is 50 percent off), H&M and Target (cheaper but not as long lasting). Hollywood high-end Hudson signature denim designs with pockets can be had for a smidgen over $150. Plus-size brands can be had for a little over $12 at Walmart. Which to buy might depend on what will soon shrink the most, you or the jeggings.

And yes, they have crossed over, now available for the male set, appealing to fashionable fellas who don’t necessarily dance to classical music for a living. But you must be extremely bold. Stylish just isn’t enough when you are pushing the envelope with man jeggings, or rather, meggings.

The question remains: To jeg or not to jeg?

I say jeg if you dig tunics. Jeg if you are under 90 and live in a cold, foggy climate where layering is key. Jeg if you earn a living lifting ballerinas. Jeg if, like my daughter, you go to a dress coded Catholic school that permits any colored jeans other than denim. And, hey moms, don’t worry about over-jegging. Like Australian Uggs, first introduced as apres ski apparel, jeggings are probably here to stay. Eventually, they might merge with Uggs, and be reborn as bootjeggers, or maybe Juggs?

Batwing tops have certainly made their style known to us this year, but only some designers do it really right.

Sandy Skinner of Ecoskin, would be one such designer. Check out this soft blue Tamarind Tunic spotted recently on Kim Raver of Grey’s Anatomy, Lipstick Jungle and 24 (side note, how does one actress get so many gigs? Must be the top?).

Made from Italian organic cotton and produced by a premier domestic knit manufacturer, this slouchy piece goes great with a more structured, streamlined bottom. That doesn’t mean you have to be in jeggings like our pictured lass. Straight or boot leg jeans are just as cute.

With the forgiving blousy bottom, this will be your new “I’ve eaten too much raw food” sweater, your “I haven’t worked out in 3 weeks” sweater, your “Mother Nature just got pissed at me” sweater.

I can’t say how extremely important it is to have something like this in your wardrobe for all these occasions – as well as just looking hot.

I don’t know how many times I have women tell me they can’t wear leggings and tunics: “I look pregnant!”

While it’s true it takes a bit of finesse to avoid looking like you’re with child, leggings and tunics are a wardrobe staple and they’re not going anywhere soon.
How to wear?

First, when wearing leggings, it’s best to wear a top that can be cinched in at the waist or goes straight down to your hips. By pulling in some forced tailoring on the top, not only does it make you look trendy, it offers onlookers verification that the only bump you have is from lunch.

One of the biggest mistakes women make with leggings is going for a flouncy top with a too high empire cut or yoking that creates more material than necessary just below the bra-line. While this is appealing if you’re feeling bloated, it’s a surefire way to have your friends who may not have seen you in a while say “How far along are you?!”

Leggings are cute with flats or heels, heels elongating the leg of course.

There are so many different types of leggings that have evolved since they hit the market some years ago that I laughed when I saw this Marie Claire article talking about “jeggings,” which are just really tight-fitting jeans.

Guilty of wearing the jegging perhaps more than I should, I admit to being obsessed with Prairie Underground’s denim legging (I own six pairs).
They stretch like crazy, have stylish details and change seasonally.

This fall, look to your favorite eco-boutique for their Tuxedo Leggings that will glam up any evening.
