When in L.A., do as the locals do, and in my case that meant practicing downward dog along the Venice Beach shoreline this weekend. Thus rendering the famous boardwalk upside down, and leaving me to reflect upon an entirely different perspective of the local style scene – and after all, isn’t thinking about things a little differently what the West Coast is all about?

Here’s what I uncovered this week.

Altered States –It would be hard to find a design team more innovative in today’s fashion world than Pasadena-based designers, Kate and Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte. Their exhibit, Rodarte: States of Matter, showing more than 20 pieces from recent collections, including some of the original costumes designed for Black Swan is currently on view at the MOCA Pacific Design Center until June 5, 2011. One of the early proponents of the ethical trend in the luxury market, the designing duo’s expressive and alternative manipulation of fabric transcends traditional clothing construction practices. The not-to-be missed exhibition is inspiration for anyone interested in redefining what clothing design can be.

Feel Good Initiative – Recently opened, the Green Denim Initiative on Main Street is one of Santa Monica’s newest sustainable shopping haunts. Locally producing Green Denim (its own line of unbelievably soft organic jeans), the store is L.A.’s greenest choice for finding this season’s wide-legged ’70s flare. Available in trendy colored washes and figure-flattering cuts, these comfort-driven styles share the shelves alongside other eco-friendly brands like EcoSkin, Alkemie and Alex and Ani. According to dynamo store manager, Bianca Smith, the ongoing sale prices of 15-75% off most items is part of their “feel good policy for tough economic times.”

Fresh Choice – A San Francisco fashion event promises to help you pick up your style like you do your veggies, Fresh and Local. Tomorrow’s trunk show at Project One, an art gallery, café and lounge featured in a converted San Francisco Design District warehouse will showcase some of the hottest Bay Area talents and their latest designs. New clothing and accessory collections from Jen Darling, Cary La Scala and Farm Fresh Clothing Co, together with pieces from Eco Citizen jewelry designer’s Kris Nations, J. Fein Designs and Molly M, promise to sell out quick. If that doesn’t motivate you to wrap up your day and head on down, hosted champagne is served at the bar from 6-7p.m. EcoSalon will be on the scene, so be sure to come say hello!

According to the Queen of retro glamor, Dita Von Teese, “the rule of shopping for me is: If your grandmother would like it, I would like it!” Jewelry designers Kris and Kim Nations couldn’t agree more.

Their latest collection, made from recycled metal and mixed elements, was inspired by their glamorous Granny, a fashion model in the 1940s who, being something of a bon viviant, enjoyed four husbands before finally settling in El Paso with the love of her life. Named “Farrington” – after their grandfather, her fifth and final husband – the collection reflects elements of the vintage Pueblo deco style that so delighted their Grandparents.

The Kris Nations line is known by fashion insiders for being the ultimate source for best friend jewelry gifts (bookmark their site for 2011s special occasions!) for reasonably priced pieces such as their signature cities necklaces and deceptively simple hammered hoops, which perfectly illustrate the line’s handcrafted, filigree aesthetic.

The sisters are based in San Carlos, California and work with local artists in the area to create the one-of-a-kind, handmade limited edition pieces. Using recycled metal and mixed elements such as the 2 pyrite – a.k.a. Fool’s Gold – nuggets and hand dyed silks featured in the Old Town Necklace above. It’s available in unusual color combinations of Navajo coral, turquoise, lemon and slate that reflect the Southwestern style beloved by their Grandmother and Grandfather.

True to Kris Nations easy-to-layer and minimal design, the edgy – but still pretty – line of delicate pieces manage to create a rip-roaring first impression, much as one imagines their gregarious Gran once did. The Electro Social Club earrings, below, made from Hematite beads on a hand shaped and hammered hoop are particularly spiffy standouts, exemplifying the jazz age influence.

After the king of retro-fitting fashion, Marc Jacobs looked to the Jazz Age for his Louis Vuitton pre-fall collection, and with news of Baz Luhrman’s upcoming remake of “The Great Gatsby,” don’t be too surprised if you start feeling a distinctly Deco fashion mood coming on.

As the air turns warmer and daylight hours grow longer, it’s time to reassess our sartorial options. For an easy, breezy choice that will keep you as cool as you look, consider trying this season’s most pervasive trend, the jumpsuit. Not the first item to pop into your mind, I’m sure – perhaps you have retro visions of Charlie’s Angels, a guaranteed wedgie or maybe you’ve just dismissed them as a passing teenage trend – but if eco style is about leading the pack, let’s get to the bottom of how to wear this latest look.

As seen on the recent runways of Stella McCartney, Etro and Givenchy, many designers have included the look in their recent collections. Some of the easiest-to-wear are from eco designers. Josh Podoll, Prairie Underground and Feral Childe all have some great jumpsuits this season.

With short dresses currently saturating the fashion landscape, jumpsuits are a look ahead of the curve. Despite their 70s connotations, there is something so fresh about them. “It is usually the edgier client who gravitates to a jumpsuit, ” says Joslin Van Arsdale, owner of Eco Citizen in San Francisco. “A person who is not afraid to try the most recent trend and individualize it.”

Danish eco-designer, Sofie Ølgaard included a superbly flattering version in her spring collection, “I love jumpsuits, because they are easy to wear. It is a complete outfit all in one. No decision making is necessary.”

You’ll certainly stand out in one. To ensure it’s for all the right reasons, you must pay attention to fit. This season’s are fitted looser than those sported by Angels, Kelly, Jill and Sabrina. When designing hers, Ølgaard knew she wanted “something loose and drapey, so it was actually easy to fit, which also means that it flatters lots of different body types and sizes.” Arsdale recommends ensuring “you have lots of room to move around in. If not, then go up a size. Jumpsuits should be roomy and comfortable.”

Designer Tara St. James has a unique take on her latest version with a high draped cowl neckline and cropped leg, and a relaxed approach to wearing them. “Picking the right jumpsuit is no different than choosing the right pant or dress. Know your body and know what feels good. The one faux pas to avoid is to make sure the torso length is right for your body. Say no to camel toe.”

Jumpsuits have long been a part of the Mr. Larkin line by designer Casey Larkin. Heidi Pettit of Vie PR and Showroom is a fan of Mr. Larkin’s “Beth” style. “It is amazing,” she says. “The fit is very flattering and the style reflects the designer’s mix of the feminine and masculine.”

It’s this contradictory appeal that makes the jumpsuit so exceedingly versatile, versatility being the byword of the thoughtful, environmentally tuned-in shopper. Depending on your accessories and choice of layers, this one-piece can take you from the beach to work and onto rooftop cocktails on a warm summer evening.

As many different jumpsuits as there are available there are different takes on how to accessorize them. Arsdale suggests “a 1940’s vibe, early Hollywood Glamour mixed with Summer Safari. Circular vintage sunglasses a la Edith Head, printed ikat scarves, and chunky necklaces and bangles from Royal Blush and Kris Nations.”

Pettit likes “a white tank, flats and a hat during the day. Platform booties, bangles or cuffs, a large cocktail ring along with a silk camisole – replacing the white tank – turn it into a sexy little number for a night out.”

St. James who loves and wears her jumpsuits regularly prefers to dress them down using few accessories, advising to keep the simplicity of a jumpsuit intact.”
