The much-coveted look of ‘distressed denim’ can now be achieved in an eco-friendly and sustainable way thanks to researchers at Spanish technology company Jeanologia.
Jeanologia’s new technology is called Light Scraper, and has the ability to produce distressed-looking denim with just the touch of a single button by incorporating virtual sandpaper. The technology reduces the time to market by 4 weeks, and keeps factory workers from developing the chronic tendinitis and breathing difficulties created by manual distressing.

The Light Scraper laser can create effects such as marbling, nepping or flames, which translate into creased, faded and ripped looks on denim. The company’s TRUTH & LIGHT collection demonstrates the efficiency and accuracy of the laser technology. The use of the laser in factories would cut down significantly on pollution caused by manual sanding and scraping, and protect the employees subjected to the effects of those practices.

Jeanologia’s president Enrique Silla is adamant that the technology will replace all manual alternatives, and as he believes it is the company’s responsibility. “As part of the jean industry, it is our responsibility to protect the health and safety of thousands of workers, reduce environmental impact and promote innovation. The future of the industry becomes more professional by creating new professionals such as technical finishing, laser designers, artists of denim, service technicians, etc.”
