You thought holiday decoration time was over? One more DIY to take you into the new year.

Stop! Don’t toss out those ribbons and cardboard boxes from the holidays. Use them to create a festive 2012 banner for a New Year’s Eve party, somewhere.

Full disclosure: inspiration for this banner is from Anthropologie store displays, mainly because they rely on an eclectic mix of earthy and recycled items. For instance, water bottles, corks and old books. While shopping, snap some pics. Their focus on design using recycled items and craftsmanship by hand is brilliant. You will be surprised how a wall made from flannel shirts and burlap coffee bags can inspire DIY New Year’s Eve decor.

Gather up your post-holiday detritus: scraps of ribbons and paper.

Draw your numbers on used gift boxes. Go big. Really big.

Trim out the numbers with scissors and start wrapping on the ribbon. You can use twine, yarn or anything festive. Ribbon with the wire in it works well. Secure the ends on the back with a dab of hot glue.

Punch a hole in the top and tie the numbers onto a string. Use the garlands from your Christmas tree to jazz it up.

Gather all the clocks you have and place them on the mantle for the countdown.

There you have it. A happy New Year and the last DIY project you’ll ever do in 2011, for auld lang syne.
