Stylist Pippa Holt has a gorgeous mansion flat in central London full of delicious dichotomies. Influences from her Australian roots sit next to evidence of her current London life. Intricate black and white wallpaper exists just one wall over from generous, simple graphic rugs.

Flea market and low budget (Ikea!) pieces sing harmoniously next to high end original designs from the likes of Charles Eames (and handfuls of other recognizable names). Two dimensional prints hang on the wall above heaping stacks of three dimensional glossy muses.

Crisp white walls and floors provide the canvas for vivid splashes of bright colors and sumptuous textures. The entire composition of Ms. Holt’s flat leaves a delicious taste in my mouth.

Rejuvenating with a drop of citrus is a refreshing way to continue the Chromatic Theology series. To some extent, the distinctive attributes of orange will be present in color variations – mandarin, magma, creamsicle, rust, marigold, sweet potato, etc.

Never underestimate the power of color. Each post in this series will explore an individual hue, but the characteristics of the topic color can be translated into tints and shades. Keep in mind that the effects and emotions we discuss are most prominent and intense in pure, saturated color. (In case you need to catch up on color, gather a glimpse of red or a ray of sunshine with the previous Chromatic Theology posts.)

ORANGE is a secondary color with conflicting emotional content. Recall a few of your second grade lessons and remember that orange is a mixture of red and yellow, boasting the charisma of both colors. Orange demands attention, yet simultaneously extends a warm invitation. The intensity and drama of red are balanced with the mild optimism of yellow. If you like the dangerous connotations of red, opt for a softer, subdued effect with orange. If you find yellow a little too submissive, add a hint of personality with orange.

Spray Paint Eclecticism. Broken Baroque. Auction House Awe. It seems no amount of categorical wit can do this space justice. Spray paint, auction houses, paint brushes, second-hand stores, and graffiti all live in these walls. Owners Jimmie Karlsson and Rick Schultz have turned this two-story flat in London into beautifully contained chaos. Karlsson has laced this interior with contrast, creating luscious tension by muddling together old, new, simple, ornate, antique, and modern. From the texture of the unsanded floors to the juxtaposition of opulence and urbanity, I love it. This flat exceeds and defies convention.

Karlsson, a designer for Jimmie Martin, has infused this space with personality, confessing that spray paint and upcycling are his hobbies, “I find it interesting to have pieces with soul and history that you won’t find elsewhere.” If you think upcycled furniture is anything except unabashedly stunning, click around Jimmie Martin, it won’t take long to change your mind.

The decadent photography by Sisters Agency captures the character of the space perfectly (as seen on Living Etc). I have already voiced my love for Harmoni og Kontrast, this interior is just one more morsel of the bountiful inspiration found there.
