Ethical furniture never looked so good.

Copenhagen-based Mater Living makes socially responsible furniture in accordance with the UN’s Global Compact, “a strategic policy initiative” for global companies that commit to the ten universally accepted principles in terms of human and labor rights, environmental protection and anti-corruption.

The result: high-end design based on an ethical business strategy that supports local craft craft traditions and the environment.

Henrik Marstrand, CEO & Founder of Mater Living, says: “For every one of the millions of products we use to improve our lives, there are associated environmental, ethical and social consequences. We strive to avoid or minimize the adverse impact on society, focusing on ethical criteria (sic) while creating sensual, timeless and durable products.”

Here are a few inspired examples:

The Bowl Table

Detachable legs on this mango table means easier transport, thus reducing transportation and energy costs. The shape is taken from traditional kneading bowls that are found extensively across southern India. Mango wood, too, is abundant and taken from the fruit tree after its productive life is over.

The Dome Table Lamp

Voted “best table lamp” by Wallpaper, it radiates mid-century retro. The spun dome contains 50% recycled aluminum.

Angle Chopsticks

Ergonomically designed steel chopsticks inspired by Japanese Oki table settings.

Shade Hanging Light

This lamp was made in a small Indian workshop as part of a sustainable business developing program called SUSBIZ india.

Mill Table

Constructed from salvaged wood, taken from old mills and other wooden structures, and cast recycled aluminum.
