Sarah Outen, was the youngest person and first woman to row solo across the Indian Ocean. Now, at age 26, she’s set off again on a solo adventure to do a human-powered-only loop of the globe which she calls London2London. Leaving London on April 1st, Outen has kayaked across the Channel to France and is now cycling across Europe and Asia, then will kayak to Japan and from Japan row across the Pacific. Her final leg will include a cycle across America and row across the Atlantic to finish in London two and half years after she left. She is raising money for four charities: CoppaFeel, The Jubilee Sailing Trust, MND Association and Water Aid.

What topics do you like reading about on EcoSalon?

My internet time is so limited at the moment but I love the news & culture section. I am interested in all things about the environment.

What other websites do you like visiting and what do you like reading about on the web?

I usually look at the news when I am away it is good to catch up. I also like to catch up on other adventurers. At the moment I am following my friend Roz Savage who is in the Indian Ocean (she is currently rowing solo from Australia to India). I am hoping once we get some communications problems sorted out with a satellite broadband terminal I will have more time online.

Tell us a little bit about your expedition’s website.

I have a blog archive you can go back and read so it doesn’t matter when you join the journey. There is a journey tracker to show you exactly where I have got to. I will be updating it with more photos and videos soon.

Do you consider yourself to be an eco-conscious individual?

Definitely. Traveling the way I am by bike and rowing across oceans focuses you on sustainability. You need to think of your own energy – do I have enough water and food? I am very connected with how much waste I am producing. Every night I collect my trash and then in the morning have to find a bin. Then 1km down the road you see the massive rubbish tip. In the boat you have all your trash for six months with you. I love traveling this way – you’re so close to the landscape and wildlife and feel every bit of the journey. I have a really intimate connection with everything around me. It is unique.

What inspires you to keep going when things get tough?
I use memories of people to motivate me. Mostly the solution is found by breaking the task up into tiny tiny steps and moving forward little by little. It’s just about keeping the balance stacked up with positives.

When are you happiest?

At the end of a day’s cycling I love getting the tent up, sitting back and feeling content. Although other times I am very happy buzzing along making the miles and thinking ‘I am doing this.’

Name: Mandi Hoffman

Location: Portland, OR

Website: Chicvegan.com

1. When did you first starting reading EcoSalon?

To be quite honest, it was so long ago I don’t really remember! Your archive only goes to 2008, but I swear it was before that. Maybe EcoSalon first existed in my mind, and then became a dream fulfilled? Anyway, I’m a design snob so I was drawn to the simple and intuitive design of the site as well as the attention paid to details. I got hooked on the never ending flow of friendly information and the to-the-point articles written by smart ladies.

2. What topics do you enjoy reading the most about on EcoSalon and why?

Obviously, anything vegan related immediately strikes my fancy. I am also interested in cruelty free and toxin free beauty products. The reason I like EcoSalon so much is because it covers such a broad range of topics, I am constantly discovering something new I didn’t know about.

3. Would you consider yourself a very conscious individual? What about in relation to being kind to the planet?

I am the most eco-conscious person I know! The main way I green my life is by living a vegan lifestyle. (The livestock industry is responsible for a huge chunk of greenhouse gas emissions, water use and environmental degradation.) I also rarely drive and when I do I rock a bio-diesel Jetta! Eighty percent of my clothing is thrifted and the rest comes from local or independent designers. I don’t use chemicals in my house or on my body. I am the quintessential hippie, but with heels and deodorant.

4. What’s your all time favorite products?

Right now I’m in love with Hurraw! lip balms. They are organic, vegan, raw and amazing. I also love Marie Veronique Organics tinted moisturizer. I’ve been on a DIY kick lately and have been making my own cleaning products (I should buy stock in baking soda) and perfumes. Making your own scent is so easy! I recommend it to everyone.

5. Tell us a bit about your blog/website and other websites/blogs you enjoy visiting.

Chic Vegan is a blog I have been running for about two and half years. It’s a place for smart, savvy, ethical women to hang out and be fabulous. I post about everything from food to fashion to self- actualization to activism. It really depends on my mood. I also offer consulting services and a free e-book. I’m all about helping people go vegan and improve their lives!

Obviously, EcoSalon is one of my fave blogs of all time! I also frequent The Streets I Know, an amazing little fashion blog from Melanie Pyves. She is on top of every ethical brand that has ever graced this earth! And Kris Carr’s Crazy Sexy Life is another one of my faves.

Outside of the eco/vegan realm, my favorite sites are: Cute Overload, Post Secret, and Zen Habits. I believe they are all vital to my sanity.

6. You are the happiest when . . .

I’m cuddling with an animal (this includes, but is not limited to, my boyfriend). When I am out in nature. When I’m eating a delicious meal. When I’m working hard on a project. Pretty much all of the time. Life is too short to do anything that makes you unhappy.
