<p><em>Consumers have become more cautious and conscious about their purchases &#8211; and these traits are here to stay.</em></p>
<p>Our global economy has taken a beating and consumers everywhere are changing their buying habits to adjust to our new reality of insecure jobs, reduced real estate values, mistrust in business and government, and an uncertain economic future. Consumers are saving more, spending less, buying items when needed, and patronizing companies that care about more than just business.</p>
<p>Businesses wanting to survive this prolonged economic slump are paying attention to these new buying patterns and are adjusting accordingly. Will these new habits continue once the economy starts to recover? Studies predict that the longer these frugal economic conditions persist, the more ingrained the habits could become. Recovery has been much slower than many anticipated, but while things may not get worse, they <a title="Double-Dip Recession Unlikely, But Recovery Will Remain Weak" href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/08/23/economist-survey-double-dip-recession-recovery_n_933846.html" target="_blank">might not get better anytime soon</a>, either.</p><div id="inContentContiner"><!-- /4450967/ES-In-Content -->

<p><strong>There are more important things than money</strong></p>
<p>When the economy began its rapid downshift, one of the consequences was a spotlight on a society that had been chronically overspending on material goods and living precariously on credit. <em><a title="Eyes Wide Open, Wallet Half Shut" href="http://www.ogilvy.com/News/Press-Releases/March-2010-Eyes-Wide-Open.aspx" target="_blank">Eyes Wide Open, Wallet Half Shut</a></em>, a 2010 study by Ogilvy and Mathers, found that three quarters of post-recession consumers surveyed were disenfranchised with the pursuit of money, responding that they no longer cared to climb the corporate ladder, would rather spend more time with family, and would choose job security over an insecure job with opportunities for raises.</p>
<p>Authors John Gerzema and Michael D’Antonio told brands to bid goodbye to the inflated wealth and hyper-consumerism of years past and say hello to “a lifestyle more focused on community, connection, quality, and creativity,” in <em><a title="The Power of the Post-Recession Consumer" href="http://www.strategy-business.com/article/00054?pg=all" target="_blank">The Power of the Post-Recession Consumer</a></em>. Consumers are moving from “mindless consumption” to “mindful consumption,” specifically purchasing goods and services from vendors who echo their values and live up to their standards.</p>
<blockquote><p>“More recently, the BAV [Young &amp; Rubicam’s BrandAsset Valuator] surveys show sharp increases in the number of consumers who want positive relationships with marketplace vendors and who focus more on corporate behavior. Between 2005 and 2009, a growing number of people rejected status-driven values such as snobbishness and exclusivity, and embraced attributes related to bringing people closer together or making the world a better place. Among the once-prized brand attributes that declined in this period were: “exclusive” (down 60 percent), “arrogant” (down 41 percent), “sensuous” (down 30 percent), and “daring” (down 20 percent). On the opposite side of the scale, the brand attributes Americans found more important as they began to sense the impending recession and then suffered through the crisis were: “kindness and empathy” (up 391 percent), “friendly” (up 148 percent), “high quality” (up 124 percent), and “socially responsible” (up 63 percent).”</p></blockquote>

<p><strong>Frugality is cool</strong></p>
<p>When faced with an increasing climate of job insecurity and falling equity, many consumers were forced to examine their own economic situation and revise their spending habits. People began economizing everywhere and both price and quality became key drivers for many purchases.</p>
<p>A Booz &amp; Co. study, <em><a title="Forever Frugal?" href="http://www.booz.com/media/uploads/Forever_Frugal.pdf" target="_blank">Forever Frugal?</a></em> found that since the recession consumers are becoming extremely conscious about what they buy. They are spending less on household items, embracing less expensive private brands and buying fewer, high-quality items. The Ogilvy and Mathers study shows that 92 percent surveyed are using coupons, 91 percent are shopping at less expensive and/or discount stores and 90 percent are buying more store brands.</p>
<p><strong>Buy now, use now</strong></p>
<p>Finally, a good reason to curb the creeping Christmas shopping season that has managed to weasel its way into October <em>(Editor&#8217;s note: a few clueless companies might take note. This morning &#8211; August 31 &#8211; we received a Christmas pitch)</em>. Brands could count on consumers to buy early and buy a lot on credit, but along with buying less, consumers are waiting until they need something to buy. Savvy companies are readjusting their seasonal selling to accommodate this recent trend. CEO of Newell Rubbermaid, Mark Ketchum, told the  <a title="The Just-in-Time Consumer" href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704865704575610452319977706.html" target="_blank"><em>Wall Street Journal</em></a> that his company changed its back-to-school selling season from its normal early July to mid-August range to late July through September to capitalize on the consumer’s desire to buy supplies later.</p>
<p>Consumers are also making their way through all the inventory they already own in their pantries, makeup cases, and bathroom cabinets, and restocking with smaller packages and less variety. Warehouse stores like Costco and BJ’s (based in MA), have noticed that shoppers bought less but shopped more frequently. Ahead of the curve, in 2008, BJ’s had already begun shrinking its package sizes to appeal to smaller households and people who wanted to stock up weekly, rather than monthly. These clairvoyant changes resulted in increased sales and memberships. As this economic climate persists, these changes might become the future standard.</p>

<p><strong>Green is still good</strong></p>
<p>Despite the sometimes higher price of green products, environmental consumerism is still going fairly strong. A 2011 <a title="Post-Recession Consumers Will Want Greener Goods" href="http://www.businessgreen.com/bg/news/2102784/post-recession-consumers-greener-amex" target="_blank">UK study commissioned by Amex</a> found that consumers place value on ethically sourced goods, and a <a title="Are Americans Willing to pay More Green to Get More Green?" href="http://www.mintel.com/press-centre/press-releases/514/are-americans-willing-to-pay-more-green-to-get-more-green" target="_blank">Mintel study</a> also reports that more than 35 percent of consumers surveyed said they would pay more for environmentally-friendly products. Green customers aren&#8217;t the majority, but it is a strong segment nevertheless.</p>
<p>As many consumers try to lead more conscious lifestyles, studies project that demand for ethical products will continue. Consumers want to buy from companies who implement internal environmental policies, work to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and commit to environmental targets.</p>
<p><strong>Consumers want companies who care about the community…</strong></p>
<p>Corporate social responsibility (CSR) has gained visibility and momentum in the last several years with no indication of slowing down any time soon, but more than ever before, companies need to be strategic about their CSR efforts so they are complimentary to both the community and business growth. CSR isn&#8217;t simply about a company donating money to a worthy cause. CSR, implemented effectively, attracts both customers and employees, helps retain talent, and benefits both the company and the community. More than ever before, consumers are doing more research into companies and products before buying, requiring brands to be more transparent, ethical and accountable to customers in order to gain their business.</p>
<p>Each company defines CSR for itself. Intel focuses on energy conservation, emerging as one of the <a title="Intel Purchases 2.5B Renewable Energy Credits" href="http://www.triplepundit.com/2011/02/intel-green-energy-rec/" target="_blank">largest purchasers of renewable energy credits</a> in the past few years, committing to 2.5 billion in 2011.  The semiconductor manufacturer has also invested significant efforts toward creating clean energy solutions in several locations and employee education around their efforts. This helps the company save money on energy costs, reduces its impact, and engages its employees in energy saving initiatives.</p>
<p>ExxonMobil focuses on <a title="Investing in Women's Economic Opportunities at ExxonMobil: Lorie Jackson" href="http://www.triplepundit.com/2011/04/exxonmobil-women-interview-lorie-jackson/" target="_blank">women&#8217;s education around the world</a>. ExxonMobil Foundation&#8217;s Lorie Jackson <a title="ExxonMobil Foundation and CEDPA Work to Advance Women's Leadership Around the World" href="http://www.theglasshammer.com/news/2010/01/15/exxonmobil-foundation-and-cedpa-work-to-advance-women%E2%80%99s-leadership-around-the-world/" target="_blank">explains</a> that it&#8217;s good business because it broadens ExxonMobil&#8217;s pool of talent in the countries where it does business. This, in turn, helps ExxonMobil, and it helps communities worldwide. PepsiCo was looking to improve the nutritional value of its snacks. <a title="PepsiCo Improves Products, Stabilizes Communities and Helps the Environment" href="http://www.triplepundit.com/2011/02/pepsico-sustainable-agriculture-project/" target="_blank">One solution</a>, replacing palm oil with high-oleic sunflower oil (HOSO), will improve the economy of a Mexican region and the financial picture of 850 families, lessen its environmental impact and stabilize operating costs.</p>
<p><strong>…and about customers, too </strong></p>
<p>Although customers are more discriminating about their purchases and want to pay less, they still expect to be treated well by the companies they choose to patronize. Many organizations have cut back on easy return policies, shipping policies and customer service, <em>but that has proven to be a mistake</em>. After reeling from the large-scale meltdown of the financial industry, the last thing customers want to hear from a company is that they want their business, but don’t have the staff, time or inclination to treat customers well.</p>
<p>Companies who put customers first, versus those who sacrificed customer satisfaction for short-term relief, actually performed best according to <a title="Customer Service in a Shrinking Economy" href="http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/09_09/b4121026559235.htm" target="_blank">Bloomberg BusinessWeek’s </a>Third Annual Customer Service Champs list. Companies like Hertz, who had to cut back on services at some locations, angering travelers who already faced more aggravation in airports and more fees when flying, scrambled to find the right balance between making personnel cuts, and making sure those cuts weren&#8217;t so visible to customers that lack of service drove them away. Other companies like USAA found that cross-training call center reps, so that they had expertise in more than one area, helped them to keep their customer service level high, even when they had to cut back.</p>
<p>Although gaining new customers is important, companies have found that <em>retaining</em> already loyal customers is crucial. Zappos used to quietly upgrade both new and return customers with overnight shipping, but decided to <a title="Zappos customer service" href="http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/09_09/b4121026559235_page_3.htm" target="_blank">shift those costs</a> toward benefits for repeat customers. Dell has struggled with <a title="Will Dell Come Face-to-Face with Customers Over Google+ Hangouts?" href="http://www.triplepundit.com/2011/08/dell-customers-google-hangouts/" target="_blank">customer service woes</a> for the last decade, and is still working to regain trust.</p>
<p>The Great Depression spawned a generation of savers. This recession is also affecting the buying habits of the next generation. Mindful consumerism may very well be here to stay.</p>

<p>It has come to my attention that the current economic downturn has resulted in a<a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/16/weekinreview/16wald.html?_r=1"> reduction of global warming gases </a>in the United States.  The recession has led to a smaller economy and less energy consumption, which, in turn, has led to cleaner air.</p>
<p>This is good news to be sure, but I don’t know how much enthusiasm I can work up for it. “Silver linings” are tricky things, and there is sometimes little comfort to be had when a benefit results from a massively gloomy situation.  If I found out that I had only weeks to live, my reaction would not be “<em>Well, at least I don’t have to hear another word about those damn Kardashians</em>,” although that is certainly the bright side of a tragic and untimely death. Similarly, clean air is nice, but can it really make us care less about worldwide financial ruin? I don’t know the answer to that, but in the spirit of glasses being half full, I offer this list of dubious advantages to a really bad economy.</p>
<ul>
<li>Pleading poverty is the new get-out-of-jail-free card. Don’t feel like wasting an entire afternoon antiquing with the ladies? Don’t want to go to a fancy restaurant with the most boring couple you’ve ever known? Claiming you can’t afford it is the new way to get out of everything. And no one will dare try to talk you out of it.</li>
<li><em>Everything is on sale. </em>Seriously<em>. </em>From cashmere sweaters to cocaine, from condos to <a href="http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/08_44/b4106055117536.htm">Caribbean vacations</a>, everything can be had at a discount. <em> </em></li>
<li>The general public has caught up with me and now people everywhere distrust the fashion industry. I am no longer alone in feeling that there isn’t a sheath dress on earth worth $1,700. As more and more women are forced to keep wearing the clothes they purchased in 2007, they are disinclined to slavishly follow style makers who decree that the new fashion “must haves” are bolero jackets, harem pants, and anything chartreuse.</li>
<li>Comfort food has made a comeback. Belt-tightening has brought depression-era food back in style as consumers lose their taste for extravagantly whimsical restaurant dishes. Fewer and fewer eateries feature main courses that ascend 12-inches into the air, the main components of which are jicama, white truffles, and beef cheeks. Restaurants that want to stay in business have begun re-thinking the appeal of $22.00 appetizers, opting instead for meatloaf, fried chicken and artisanal ring dings.</li>
<li>In related news: Maitre d’s and hostesses in fine restaurants have become noticeably more polite. Gone are the days when restaurants had unlisted telephone numbers and bad-tempered models worked the reservation desk. Eating out is still expensive, but it is now possible to dine in nice restaurants without sleeping with or giving birth to the chef.</li>
<li>Due to the obscene expense of taxis, it is far easier to hail a cab in Manhattan. Conversely, it is next to impossible to find a seat on the cross-town bus.</li>
<li>Plumbers, electricians and painters who would not return your phone calls five years ago now send out holiday greeting cards and call to solicit your business.</li>
<li>The recession has put a significant and well-documented <a href="//www.selfgrowth.com/articles/how_is_the_current_recession_affecting_marriage">strain on relationships</a>. On the bright side, it has also raised the value of gold. So your marriage may be breaking up, but you will probably get a really good price if you have to sell your wedding ring for scrap metal.</li>
<li>In order to make themselves more marketable, and better able to find jobs in a down economy, young people are getting their<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/silly-recession-trends-of-the-weekend-tattoo-removal-and-discount-ivf-2009-5"> tattoos removed </a>– as mothers everywhere rejoice.</li>
</ul>

<p><em>Brother, Can You Spare a Dime</em>? was the haunting battle cry of the last great depression. These days, many of us are begging for something even more elusive: time. Please, mister,  just give me an extra hour to squeeze in a run or a massage, a free weekend to go camping rather than paying bills and scrubbing the bathroom tiles.</p>
<p>Increasing research proves we are struggling in this time warp and are decidedly more stressed over time losses than wage losses or the exorbitant price of things. If it is a given that we value <a href="http://www.whitehutchinson.com/leisure/articles/minutes_moolah_lbe.shtml">minutes over moolah</a>, than what can we do to conquer the clock?</p>
<p>For one thing, it is clear many workers don&#8217;t bother taking the vacation days they have earned at work, according to a somewhat self-serving Westin Hotel survey. It found that while nearly 70 percent of those questioned feel revived after a break, a whopping 75 percent of us are too busy keeping up the pace to actually de-stress on a vacation. It was clear that a bulk of those who keep working rather than beaching or camping are fearful about job security (ah yes, the American way!) and at least 30 percent of those who do manage to take off check in with work every day.</p><div id="inContentContiner"><!-- /4450967/ES-In-Content -->

<p>One reason for working through earned time is that we have the <a href="http://www.marshallparthenon.com/opinion/americans-need-more-time-to-laugh-and-have-fun-1.2208565">least paid vacation days</a> of any nation, which makes taking off even harder in a recession. Americans are afforded just 13 paid days on the average, compared with 42 days in Italy, 37 in France and 35 in Germany. Even if you take those paid golf days (as our president did), they usually don&#8217;t amount to many hours goofing off and having fun or just feeling your life. We all know how necessary this is for recuperating from the stress and strain of working and managing our lives.</p>
<p>Professional women often face a double whammy of keeping things up both at work and at home, believing they have no time to escape from either job. Studies continually show these demands are not imagined but rather <a href="http://www.sparkpeople.com/resource/health_news_detail.asp?health_day=637512">expected of them</a>. Working women who work from home become exhausted from the multi-tasking while commuters who don&#8217;t opt for public transit are often running on empty.</p>
<p>Shelling out $15 an hour for a house cleaner or babysitter could eat up too much of the income needed for the mortgage, medical insurance (it keeps going up, Mr. President), school-related expenses and other money-sucking priorities. Meanwhile, these women are prone to <a href="http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/la/cleaning/staycation-hire-a-cleaning-lady-058609">play housemaid</a> on  Saturdays, catching up on laundry and paperwork that falls behind during the busy workweek.</p>
<p>As the most <a href="http://20somethingfinance.com/american-hours-worked-productivity-vacation/">overworked country</a> in the world, it is hard to strike a balance. Even during a recession when have been tossed to the unemployment lines, we are forced to spend free time still caring for children or searching for work. The ego often prevents professional men from lazing on hammocks. Some even continue to dress the part as they search for new work online a home or coffee shops. Despite the fact that taking a breather is often the most beneficial way to gain new momentum, it can be humiliating to appear as if you have nothing to do.</p>
<p>While many Americans say a good income can improve their lives, few find it can buy happiness. People keep busy 24/7 &#8211; so busy they often forget to laugh and have fun, or waiting for that free moment when chores are done to reward themselves. Many of us also stress about using time to catch up on our connections, email or Facebook, and the time we needed to restore ourselves gets eaten quickly, according to <a href="http://zenhabits.net/reclaim-your-time-20-great-ways-to-find-more-free-time/">Zenhabits</a>, which compiled useful list of <a href="http://zenhabits.net/reclaim-your-time-20-great-ways-to-find-more-free-time/">20 ways to reclaim your time</a>. One is to make a short list of four to five things you love to do and to actually make room for them. Another is to <a href="http://ecosalon.com/say-no-10-tips-for-healthy-and-happy-ways-to-set-boundaries/">learn to say &#8220;NO&#8221;</a>.</p>
<p>An important thing to remember is not to be so stressed over your time management that you lose sleep over it, since sleep is also vital for the body to rest and for the brain to repair cellular damage and absorb nutrients. If you get a free moment, you are better off with a nap than a coffee break. <a href="http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/34845508/ns/today-today_books/">Sleep deprivation</a> resulting from stress, or relaxing in front of the tube rather than socializing or enjoying music, just aggravates the sense of loss, experts say. And then you go around not only being time strapped, but as a cranky time strapped zombie.</p>
<p>Perhaps the goal is not to save up on time, like we try but fail to save up on money, but to spend it the right way. The bathroom tiles can wait. Your health and happiness cannot.</p>

<p>San Francisco&#8217;s parking violations are among the highest in the nation at a whopping $63 at downtown spaces and $53 in the hoods. It can be pretty jarring when confronted with a dreaded ticket on your windshield when the meter expires &#8211; especially after holiday shopping and supporting local businesses. Those businesses face different challenges than the malls with their football field parking lots.</p>
<p>You also get slapped with the bloated fines for parking in neighborhoods during street cleaning hours in which a sweeper rolls by for five minutes during the three hour time frame in which you are warned not to park on the designated street.</p>

<p>It&#8217;s all part of the plan to make money for the city at the expense of its drivers. And while many local environmentalists are all for it as a way to encourage biking and bus riding and other modes of public transportation, it isn&#8217;t delivering the optimum results: Boosting city income and getting taxpayers to leave their cars at home.</p>
<p>The prices of citations were increased $3 last year to boost revenue for the hurting <a href="http://www.sfmta.com/cms/home/sfmta.php">Municipal Transportation Agency</a> which plans to collect an estimated $232 million in fines this year, according to the <em><a href="http://www.sfexaminer.com/local/Parking-meter-plan-strikes-a-nerve-78379007.html">San Francisco Examiner</a></em>. But gouging the city&#8217;s drivers won&#8217;t generate enough income for the $47 million operating shortfall. So, what can the agency do? Look to the meters again, of course.</p>
<p><a href="http://ecosalon.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/cards.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-30345" title="cards" src="http://ecosalon.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/cards.jpg" alt="cards" width="242" height="152" srcset="https://storage.googleapis.com/wpesc/1/2009/12/cards.jpg 242w, https://storage.googleapis.com/wpesc/1/2009/12/cards-240x150.jpg 240w" sizes="(max-width: 242px) 100vw, 242px" /></a></p>
<p>Now the agency is proposing rate extensions at some 25,000 meters as a way to make up at least $9 million of the revenue shortfall. Most meters now end at six p.m., giving locals a break for patronizing restaurants or other businesses. In some locations they would extend to midnight and to Sundays. That means you best carry plenty of quarters or buy <a href="http://www.sfmta.com/cms/pmeter/parkingcard.htm">parking meter cards</a> if you want to do the town by car because public parking garages are often full and can cost even more than a violation for a night of dinner and the theater.</p>
<p>The whole gouging system has residents shaking their heads, including respected former <em>San Francisco Chronicle</em> columnist Adair Lara, who opened the discussion up to her many Facebook friends asking if they, too, were exasperated by the insane fees. She got plenty of responses from those who have been burned &#8211; yet not deterred from leaving home. Starving the meters is really the only weapon tax payers have in <a href="http://marc.perkel.com/2003/08/09/im-tired-of-san-francisco-parking-tickets/">protesting the fees</a>, and would also result in fewer cars on the road.</p>
<p>Some, like Jim Lazarus of the <a href="http://www.sfchamber.com/">SF Chamber of Commerce</a>, applaud having meters operating on Sundays because it would encourage turnover which helps local businesses. Even so, he told the <em>Examiner</em> extending paid parking after six in the evening &#8220;is just an excuse to shake people down&#8221; and that &#8220;their primary purpose is not to be a cash cow for Muni.&#8221;</p>
<p>Transit Agency head <a href="http://www.sfexaminer.com/local/Nathaniel_Ford_is_putting_Muni_back_on_track.html">Nathaniel Ford</a>, credited with putting Muni &#8220;back on track,&#8221; argues he is coming from the heart and not the pocketbook with a  strategy that is more about managing congestion than drawing more revenue. Apparently, occupancy rates at meters are higher than 85 percent in some places. The agency figures extending parking meters will increase the availability of spaces and cut down on drivers having to circle blocks to find spaces.</p>
<p>I hear him, since I was forced to circle the bustling Richmond neighborhood of Geary on Sunday to park my car and meet my family on the avenue for lunch. I must have spent 15 minutes circling until landing a coveted spot on a side street, about five blocks away. I&#8217;m not sure if it would have been easier if the meters were operating. Across the bridge in Marin County, municipalities are offering the gift of free parking every day during the holidays as a &#8220;courtesy&#8221; to its taxpayers who are supporting local businesses. And the turnover seems to go pretty smoothly over there.</p>
<p>I am certain of one thing: A $63 parking violation is a violation of justice, a punishment that hardly fits the crime. If it is desired to have a stinging effect, it does. It is painful getting a ticket knowing you could use the money to pay your heating bill or even donate it to a worthy cause. <em>I will never park in this god forsaken town again</em>, you vow.</p>
<p>But it also leaves a bitter aftertaste directly associated with the city of San Francisco and its government. After all, we are still in the throws of a recession, even if it is hard to park amid the congestion.</p>

<p>In short, he acted like an ass &#8211; an ass with some weird-ass dreams. That&#8217;s what you get for eating kidney pie before bed, you old meanie. <p>But in revisiting the new 3-D animated Disney remake of <a href="http://disney.go.com/disneypictures/achristmascarol/">A Christmas Carol </a>with my 10-year-old daughter, Lauren, I detected traces of green in Scrooge&#8217;s social gaffes. Once we got past the unnecessary harshness of the production, directed by Robert Zemeckis and starring the agile Jim Carrey, I found a new appreciation for Scrooge&#8217;s <a href="http://ecosalon.com/frugality-the-f-word-americans-cant-live-without/">commendable frugality</a>.</p>
<p>He boasted a spare old house with no central heating and a <a href="http://ecosalon.com/vintage-fashion-at-modcloth/">vintage wardrobe</a>. He steadfastly refused to associate personal happiness with material accumulation. Anyone who subscribes to <a href="http://www.adbusters.org/">Ad Busters</a> (including my husband, Edwin) applauds these traits.</p>
<p>It is no coincidence the book, <em><a href="http://ecosalon.com/americas-cheapest-family-gains-popularity-in-economic-recession/#more-27417">America&#8217;s Cheapest Family</a></em>, is becoming a favorite read as the nation&#8217;s recession drags on. We yearn to learn how to be tight wads, too, and not to part so easily with our hard-earned cash.</p>
<p>True, Scrooge also withheld giving emotionally, but it can be challenging giving of one&#8217;s soul when its casing has been neglected for decades. A dearth of sex can make us stingy. I&#8217;d share my thoughts about this with you, but first I need some sex.</p>
<p>In terms of his anti-social life, I can&#8217;t say I blame him for rejecting his nephew&#8217;s festive fetes which encouraged insensitive guests to join a rousing guessing game of <a href="http://www.ehow.com/how_2485_play-charades.html">Charades</a> at someone else&#8217;s expense. <em> </em></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>There are no excuses for how the boss man treated Tiny Tim&#8217;s nice dad, Bob Cratchit, forcing him to work long hours and holidays at a poor wage, except for the fact I see this all the time in the American workforce as over-worked retail cashiers and <a href="http://ecosalon.com/florida-migrant-slave-trade/">migrant workers</a> suffer at the hands of the profit-hungry corporate machine.</p>
<p>Perhaps the best argument that Scrooge was not <em>just</em> mean, but also rather green, was his strict no gift policy, a trend that is catching on as a rising number of celebrants choose to pass on amassing more junk they simply don&#8217;t need.</p>
<p>Some, like my friend&#8217;s 8-year-old son, Samuel, need more prompting than others. His mom, Susanne, convinced him to throw an &#8220;eco birthday party&#8221; last week (below) with paperless invites, no presents and a fun craft project of constructing a solar car.  In the end, she says, he got the message that sustaining is better than receiving.</p>

<p>Other friends of mine turning 30 or 40 or 50 are happily forgoing gifts and stating so on <a href="http://www.wikihow.com/Say-No-Gifts-on-an-Invitation">invitations with notations</a> that say stuff like, &#8220;No presents: Your presence is all we need.&#8221; There was a funny <a href="http://www.hbo.com/larrydavid/episode/season4/keywords32.html">Curb Your Enthusiasm</a> addressing the issue at a party for an injured Ben Stiller, who was peeved when Larry David took him at his word and nixed the gift. At least old Scrooge withheld with conviction.</p>

<p>Who decided honoring one another requires spending money on new things? Here is a cashmere sweater and a diamond heart pendant to say <em>you are special</em>. Here is an <a href="http://ecosalon.com/green-shaven/">electric razor</a>, a <a href="http://ecosalon.com/snuggie-wrap-yourself-in-the-toasty-toxic-warmth/">Snuggie</a>, an <a href="http://ecosalon.com/green_electronics_on_the_path_to_a_greener_apple/">iPod</a>, to make sure you know.</p>
<p>If you don&#8217;t agree Scrooge was a tad green, you might concede that the moral of the Dickens tale qualifies: Giving is a state of mind.</p>
<p>Giving from the heart, not the pocketbook, is the true message of Christmas &#8211; the message articulated by Christ and <a href="http://www.adbusters.org/features/what_would_buddha_buy.html">Buddha</a> and other teachers who demonstrated how to be a kinder, gentler, carbon mass.</p>
<p>When Ebenezer turned the corner that fateful Christmas morning and became decidedly present, his new-found sense of positive Karmic energy was the gift that touched his community, even more than the massive goose he bought for the Cratchits or the cash donation he pledged to the needy. A re-birth is always something to celebrate, whether you&#8217;re talking about an old dog like Scrooge or the beloved planet.</p>

<p>Everyone&#8217;s dishing about how the concept of <a href="http://ecosalon.com/bright_green_business_idea_organic_delicious_sustainable_food_on_wheels/">food trucks</a> has been overhauled. They&#8217;re not just parked at job sites to feed hungry laborers anymore, but are <a href="http://ecosalon.com/building-community-food-through-street-carts-taco-truck-street-vending/">taking the high road</a> and giving restaurants a run for their money.</p>
<p>I got a taste of the trend at the posh 50th birthday party of a friend in San Francisco where a taco mobile was stationed at the entrance to the upscale house, titillating guests who lined up to order bean burritos and cheese quesadillas while nursing lemon drop martinis.</p>
<p>&#8220;Is the meat organic?&#8221; I asked my hostess, surveying the two men cooking frenetically behind the sliding window. &#8220;Of course it is,&#8221; she said. &#8220;We keep kosher!&#8221;</p><div id="inContentContiner"><!-- /4450967/ES-In-Content -->

<p>Guess it&#8217;s getting way kosher to peddle all kinds of culinary delights from a truck as the recession drags on. A surge in the mobile restaurant biz is being sighted across the country, fueled by inflated commercial leases and hungry epicureans watching their diets and budgets.</p>
<p>From Korean BBQ to <a href="http://ecosalon.com/green-gourmet-cupcakes-on-the-rise-with-the-vegan-wise/">gourmet cupcakes</a> and Vietnamese-style sandwiches, the cafes on wheels are gearing up for success in an age of time crunches, lay-offs and convenience. Sure, most are cookin&#8217; with gas and motoring with it, but a growing number are eco wise in terms of fuel alternatives, kitchen appliances and healthy ingredients.</p>
<p>Green Truck on the Go caters to an organic food crowd, working from a solar-powered commissary and delivering in two trucks powered by vegetable oil and bio-diesel.</p>
<p>&#8220;At Green Truck, serving healthy, gourmet organic food in a fast and  efficient way is not enough,&#8221; says the company. &#8220;We believe that a healthy  environment is tantamount to living a healthy life.&#8221; This business furthers its commitment by using locally-grown ingredients whenever possible and opting for biodegradable containers and utensils.</p>

<p>Even the classic hot dog from a stand is getting in the act. <a href="http://www.letsbefrankdogs.com/">Let&#8217;s Be Frank</a> offers weenies made from grass-fed organic beef from its trailers in hip L.A. hoods, including one right outside <a href="http://www.silverlakewine.com/">Silver Lake Wine</a> where diners gather to taste the grape and down a dog; and the Franken Stand sells to L.A. vegans who gobble up its 100% plant-based vegan franks. No mystery meat Dodger dogs for these discerning customers.</p>
<p>L.A. blazed the trail in the roadside food trend, as described in a round-up in the <em><a href="http://www.latimes.com/features/food/la-fo-foodtrucks22-2009jul22,0,7542552.story">L.A. Times</a></em>. Yet, the convoys are making their way to a city near you.  <em><a href="http://www.usatoday.com/travel/destinations/10great/2008-07-10-food-trucks_N.htm"> USA Today</a></em> highlighted <em>the greatest places to flag down a feast</em> in a recent food watch spread.</p>
<p>O the map: The upscale <a href="http://www.millcityfarmersmarket.org/">Chef Shark</a> trailer found Saturday mornings at Minneapolis&#8217; Mill City Farmers Market; <a href="http://www.fliphappycrepes.blogspot.com/">Flip Happy Crepes</a> in Austin, Texas (below), which serves hand-made savory crepes and fresh French-pressed coffee from its parking space on Josephine Street; and <a href="http://www.moxierx.blogspot.com/">Moxie RX</a> in Portland, Oregon, known for great brunch fare on wheels such as buckwheat waffles, grapefruit juice with basil and soda and healthy smoothies blended with bananas, dates and almond butter.</p>

<p>The good news is this is no sideshow where anything goes, like carny refreshment booths. Food trucks must meet health inspection restaurant standards.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.usatoday.com/travel/destinations/10great/2008-07-10-food-trucks_N.htm">One blogger</a> fan of the trailer grub, who works in the Public Health environmental health division, commented that it&#8217;s even easier for the informed public to judge a mobile cafe than to know what truly goes on in the kitchen of a restaurant. &#8220;You can see for yourself if somebody is handling your ready-to-eat food with bare hands or committing other cruddy violations,&#8221; he says.</p>
<p>I wondered about that at my friend&#8217;s birthday party when I was handed the plate of steaming tacos. The operation looked pretty clean to me. Was it really organic? Guess I&#8217;ll have to take their word for it. At least it beat the ubiquitous party buffet in terms of the temptation towards gluttony. Nobody wanted to wait in the long truck line again for seconds.</p>

<p>Here are a few easy green fixes for your property to reduce your own footprint in coming winter months while hoping to land an offer you can&#8217;t refuse.</p>
<p><strong>1. Upgrade to Energy Star Appliances<br />

<p>The <a href="http://www.energystar.gov/">Energy Star Symbol</a> on products such as the GE Profile Frontload Washer with Steam, is an important statement reflecting high environmental standards. Even if  you have to put out some cash on new appliances, you are letting prospective buyers know your fridge, washer and dryer are not energy hogs. If you own an Energy Star refrigerator, <a href="http://www.smart-homeowner.com/content/six-green-strategies-selling-your-home">Smart Homeowner</a> recommends you clean the coils to increase efficiency.</p>
<p><strong>2. Repaint with Nontoxic Paint<br />
</strong></p>
<p>There is nothing cheaper and more effective than repainting your walls as a design selling point and you&#8217;ll get kudos for disclosing you applied <a href="http://www.motherearthnews.com/Energy-Matters/Low-VOC-Paint-Cost.aspx">low- or non-VOC paint </a>to your rooms, since we now know that lead-based enamel products emit harmful fumes.</p>
<p><strong>3. Consider New Windows<br />

<p>While new <a href="http://www.energystar.gov/index.cfm?c=windows_doors.pr_windows">energy-efficient windows</a> can run several thousand dollars, the heat that escapes through poorly designed single-paned old ones accounts for as much as 25 percent of your heating bills. It can be worth replacing single paned models in the long run as they do increase property value and are good selling point for noise reduction, as well. Adding screens also is a good way to reduce air conditioning use in the summer and window covers help insulate in the winter.</p>
<p><strong>4. Insulate Pipes and Water Heater<br />
</strong></p>
<p>According to the <a href="http://www.thehomeknowitall.com/the_home_knowitall/2009/02/green-your-water-heater-.html">Home Know it All,</a> the process of insulating is easy by just buying a good insulation ($2 to $4 per strip), duct tape and a utility knife. Cut to fit the length and diameter of your pipes and secure every foot or so with the tape. Wrapping the exposed hot water pipes will reduce waste by increasing the temperature of hot water out of your faucets by as much as 4 degrees. <a href="http://ecohomeresource.com/2009/01/choosing-an-eco-friendly-conventional-tank-water-heater.html">Older models</a> might require adding an insulation blanket (check the manual to see if advisable). Gas water heaters should be professionally insulated by a heating contractor.</p>
<p><strong>5. Change the Lights<br />
</strong></p>

The <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/pressRelease/idUS156194+20-Aug-2009+PRN20090820">Department of Energy</a> figures green bulbs <a href="http://topics.nytimes.com/topics/news/business/energy-environment/compact-fluorescent-light-bulbs/index.html">(CFLs)</a> can reduce lighting energy costs by as much as 75 percent. Lighting adds up to 11 percent of your house&#8217;s energy budget, so the wearing of the green bulbs is a major statement about the efficiency of your property.</p>
<p>Sure, there are many other fixes such as adding those solar panels, replacing chemical treated carpets with <a href="http://www.greenamericatoday.org/pubs/realgreen/articles/flooring.cfm">sustainable bamboo hardwood</a> and installing <a href="http://www.energystar.gov/index.cfm?c=thermostats.pr_thermostats">programmable thermostats</a> and <a href="http://www.articlesbase.com/home-improvement-articles/reduce-energy-costs-with-ceiling-fans-1015751.html">eco ceiling fans</a>. Just remember, all these investments pay off in the end, even after you have moved on to a new place of your own.</p>

<p>The authors of <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Americas-Cheapest-Family-Right-Money/dp/0307339459">America&#8217;s Cheapest Family</a> have done remarkably well feeding their family of seven on just $350 per month, paying off their first house in nine years and purchasing a second, larger home, buying cars with cash, taking nice vacations, and yes, even socking away money in savings.</p><div id="inContentContiner"><!-- /4450967/ES-In-Content -->

<p>They&#8217;ve done so well, they are hitting the <a href="http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/AmericanFamily/story?id=127871&amp;page=1">television news</a> circuit including Inside Edition and receiving praised on numerous <a href="http://www.naturemoms.com/blog/2008/10/23/americas-cheapest-family/">green websites</a> to teach a fairly clueless nation the ABC&#8217;s of creating a comfortable, debt-free life. Forget the Joneses! It&#8217;s time to keep up with the Economides.</p>
<p>The couple, who live in Scottsdale, Arizona (a money-driven, rapidly built-up, energy-sucking environ), launched their popular bimonthly newsletter, <em><a href="http://www.homeeconomiser.com/">The Home Economiser</a></em>, in 2003 and have appeared in <em>Good Housekeeping</em> as well as on National Public Radio and Good Morning America.</p>
<p>Perhaps their message has been somewhat lost until the proverbial s&#8211;t hit the fan, sending many of us seeking advice from the <a href="http://www.cnn.com/2009/LIVING/worklife/09/16/mainstreet.stretching.dollars/index.html">successfully frugal among us</a>, the ones who arrogantly yet wisely uttered <em>I told you so</em> as we maxed out our credit cards.</p>
<p>According to publishers marketing this new debtors&#8217; bible:</p>
<p>&#8220;You don&#8217;t need to be a CPA or a math wizard to learn their revolutionary system, which will teach you:</p>
<p>&#8211; hundreds of ways to save money on everyday household expenses, including groceries, clothing, and health care<br />
&#8211; how to save in advance for major purchases such as homes, cars, and vacations<br />
&#8211; how to stop living paycheck to paycheck<br />
&#8211; how to eliminate debt . . . forever!&#8221;</p>
<p>Oooh, that sounds good, real good to the masses choosing between lesser evils of selling their homes, getting night jobs that will take them away from their kids, and selling what they can from cars to gold and furniture &#8211; anything to stay afloat.</p>
<p>While the Economides&#8217; disciplined road to penny pinching offers a way to avoid those evils, <a href="http://www.naturemoms.com/blog/2008/10/23/americas-cheapest-family/">Nature Moms</a> points out some of the methods may not sit well with the green among us, namely <a href="http://www.bluntmoney.com/saving-money-by-avoiding-processed-food/">buying processed foods</a> in bulk while forgoing more costly fresh fruits and veggies for the last two weeks of the month.</p>
<p>&#8221; I think families that eat lots of fresh, raw, whole foods would have a lot of adapting to do but the basic plan is a good one,&#8221; says the author of the site. &#8220;I would probably feel more comfortable doing bi-monthly shopping expeditions with weekly trips to <a href="http://ecosalon.com/a-primer-on-current-food-safety-politics-for-non-policy-geeks/">farmers&#8217; markets</a> for fruits and veggies.&#8221;</p>
<p>One of the best chapters deals with clothes shopping and how buying <a href="http://ecosalon.com/sharing-family-garb-is-good-savings-if-you-can-stand-the-loan/">stylish second-hand</a> finds can help you stay within your budget and then some. And in terms of housing costs, they advise paying off your mortgage in less than 10 years.</p>
<p>For some of us the lessons have come a bit late, but not too late to try a new tack.</p>

<p><a href="http://www.gourmet.com/"><em>Gourmet</em> Magazine</a>, an American classic, found a slump in ad sales spelled the recipe for disaster.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s why <a href="http://www.condenast.com/">Conde Nast Publications</a> is closing the oldest food magazine in the US along with <em>Modern Bride</em>, <em>Elegant Bride</em>, and the parent magazine <em><a href="http://www.cookiemag.com/">Cookie</a></em>, which I have to admit I&#8217;ve only glanced at in the doctor&#8217;s office waiting room.</p>
<p>While the bride magazines are used as sources to stimulate ideas for women planning their big events, <em>Gourmet</em> has long been the bible of American epicureans, fond of cutting out recipes for those summer salads and Thanksgiving pies. The highly respected journal, described as the &#8220;magazine of good living,&#8221; was launched in 1941 by Earle R. MacAusland, and included articles on wine and travel.</p><div id="inContentContiner"><!-- /4450967/ES-In-Content -->

<p>Recently, the magazine increased its coverage of healthy and organic fare, even dedicating a cocktail to actor-environmentalist <a href="http://www.gourmet.com/recipes/2000s/2009/02/brad-pitt-cocktail?printable=true">Brad Pitt</a>. It said it wasn&#8217;t just his pretty face, but the time he has devoted to the planet that inspired the refreshing cooler made with organic lime, organic cucumber, organic mint, and even Crop Organic cucumber vodka.<em> </em></p>

<p>According to the Associated Press, Gourmet had a circulation of 980,000 last year, but despite its devoted audience of chefs and food lovers, its ad pages fell like a badly-timed souffle, down 50 percent in the second quarter from the year before, according to the Publishers Information Bureau. That&#8217;s considered one of the biggest declines ever for a popular title.</p>
<p>Magazines have been trying to brave the recession by experimenting with their pages, even introducing video adverts inside to lure computer screen conditioned readers, as with <em><a href="http://ecosalon.com/a-screen-inside-a-magazine-to-lure-readers/">Entertainment Weekly</a></em>. In terms of the fashion magazines, there are more <a href="http://ecosalon.com/fashion-magazines-turn-the-page/">eco sources developing on the web</a>. It seems, that is where they will all end up.</p>
<p>Conde Nast spokeswoman Maurie Perl said some 180 employees of the four titles will be leaving the company with severance packages by the end of the week. Earlier in the year, the high-level publisher <a href="http://gawker.com/news/inside-conde-nast/si-newhouse-reportedly-thrilled-but-portfolio-is-wrong-for-the-audience-269903.php">shut down <em>Portfolio</em></a>, a business journal, and <em>Domino</em>, a beloved shelter magazine.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s reported that in a staff memo, Conde Nast CEO Charles Townsend said the closures were required &#8220;to navigate the company through the economic downturn and to position us to take advantage of coming opportunities.&#8221;</p>
<p>Conde Nast, run by billionaire <a href="http://www.businessweek.com/1998/52/b3610112.htm">S.I. Newhouse Jr</a>., also publishes <em>Vogue</em>, the <em>New Yorker</em> and <em>Wired</em>. The 19 remaining magazines owned by the company include <em>Bon Appetit</em>, which boasts a larger circulation than <em>Gourmet</em> at 1.4 million. Another foodie book, its ad pages drop isn&#8217;t much better at 40 percent.</p>
<p>Conde Nast promises <em>Gourmet</em>&#8216;s brand will live on in books and TV programming and you will still see recipes on Epicurious.com.</p>

<p>Welcome to <em>The September Issue</em>, a frockumentary chronicling the genius behind the fattest ever edition of Vogue, weighing in at over four pounds, reaching 13 million readers and boosting the sinking morale of the $300-billion global fashion industry.</p>
<p>I don&#8217;t know about you but I don&#8217;t like my documentaries contrived any more than my fashion. Albeit entertaining, this one by R.J. Cutler smacks of high level spin and pretense.</p>
<p>Adding to the &#8220;entertainment value&#8221; was an art-versus-bottom dollar subplot pitting the painfully bored Vogue chief Anna Wintour against brilliant, model-turned-photo stylist Grace Coddington, both British veterans who have been with the magazine for more than 20 years.</p><div id="inContentContiner"><!-- /4450967/ES-In-Content -->

<p>Coddington makes a statement with her unkempt orange mane and naked, aging face, an appearance which defies everything that lets Vogue survive, namely <a href="http://ecosalon.com/warning-female-vocalists-have-too-much-plastic-packaging/">stick-figured, cover-girl celebs</a> with flawless airbrushed faces who are posed like Barbies in lay-outs specifically engineered to sell fashion.</p>
<p>True, it&#8217;s always been about the sales, but four pounds of retail pitching might be overkill.</p>
<p>Coddington cringes throughout the film as she battles her nemesis Wintour. We the audience tend to root for the vulnerable underdog in the power struggle as the boss eliminates various elements of Coddington&#8217;s romantic fashion spreads at her whim &#8211; images labored over with great attention to lighting and detail to add depth to the 2007 September book.</p>
<p>One comes away with little empathy for the emaciated Wintour, who, so taken with herself as a removed icon, keeps her trademark goggles on while observing the indoor runway shows. Guess she figures she has seen it all so missing a few nuances of color and texture shouldn&#8217;t be a big deal. Her vacant expression dares the wizards behind the curtain to try and impress her.</p>
<p>If Coddington is the magazine&#8217;s soul, Wintour emerges the cold-blooded business brain going through the tedious motions but never really responding to her vibrant environment. Never mind that hundreds of talented, unemployed journalists are waiting in the wings for that chance-of-a-lifetime job monopolized by Wintour for two decades.</p>
<p>Appearing even more bored that the overblown caricature portrayed brilliantly by <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Psq7oJF-OKw">Meryl Streep</a> in <a href="http://www.netflix.com/Movie/The_Devil_Wears_Prada/70044889?mqso=80020215&amp;partid=The_Devil_Wears_Prada-B"><em>Prada</em></a>, Wintour seems desperate to pad Vogue and her paycheck at any cost &#8211; even <a href="http://vegetarianstar.com/2009/09/17/the-september-issue-and-anna-wintours-furry-back/">resurrecting fur</a> on the cover in the 90s to save the dying trade.</p>

<p>A longtime <a href="http://www.peta.org/mc/NewsItem.asp?id=9034">Peta target</a> for her Cruella Deville attraction to pelts, Wintour is pompous in her disregard for the mission of animal rights groups who have fought hard to sensitize humans to animal cruelty and the absurdity of slaughtering  for fashion&#8217;s sake alone. Recently, she told Sixty Minutes she needed to get security to protect her from anti-fur militants. She insisted she likes fur and that is the only reason she wears it. Right.</p>
<p>I find the most staged scene in the film is Vogue&#8217;s annual meeting in Paris with the movers and shakers of the retail world, such as the head of Neiman Marcus, who nudges Wintour to wield her influence to get couture houses to speed up delivery of gowns to an ever-increasing and demanding clientele. Hogwash! There was no increasing demand for $15,000 gowns even prior to the recession, and the only demanding clientele is the celebrity stylist crowd that manipulates its clout to borrow treasures for a day.</p>
<p>The only message I came away with is that it might be time for Wintour to hang up her Warhol wig, glasses and venti <a href="http://ecosalon.com/why-starbucks-sucks/">Starbucks paper cup</a> and give someone else a shot at salvaging her <a href="http://ecosalon.com/fashion-magazines-turn-the-page/">doomed fashion rag</a>. Perhaps it should be someone like Grace, who embodies her name while clinging to what matters most to fashion visionaries and fans &#8211; the process of creating and wearing desirable, three-dimensional art.</p>
