Believe it or not, those old-school No. 2 pencils have a wretched environmental history. They’re made out of the 4 billion trees cut down worldwide for paper industries, a mass hacking that leads to deforestation and habitat loss. Take a look at this video for more facts and figures.

This, you’re going to want to write down: to make four of these pencils, all you would need is a single broadsheet from the NY Daily News. An average circulation of the Sunday Times, meanwhile, could yield 79 million pencils (if all of the newspapers in circulation were recycled).

A classic timepiece made from tossed out and coiled up old newspapers.

This is the Women’s Multipurpose Co-Op’s attempt at making the world a more eco-friendly place, one recycled newspaper at a time. To coil this clock, each paper is wrapped and shaped into spiraled “building blocks” before being joined with thread and glue, and starched to make it firm. The cost is $28, well worth it considering the artisanal organization you’ll be helping out.

The Women’s Multipurpose Co-op fosters the growth and empowerment of women artisans in Baguio City, the Philippines.
