Is this the newest trend in 21st Century living?

In a hybrid innovation of the squatter/small house movement, Berkeley-based artist Gregory Kloehn rolled out his new line of Urban Homes this week at the San Francisco Fringe Festival.

Called Elite Waste, it’s kind of a livable installation—though probably not much smaller (or bigger) than the “boutique” hotel room I stayed in the last time I was in San Francisco. Kloehn’s luxury and, I quote, “High End Dumpster home” features hardwood floors, granite countertops, stainless steel kitchen appliances, a water storage tank, stove and barbecue.

Kloehn routinely builds homes, offices and sound studios out of storage containers. His inspiration for the trash receptacle home came not from dumpster diving or even composting, but while working on a shipping container house.

He told a local Berkeley paper, “I would look over the fence at a dumpster and think that it looked like a little house.”

In this video, Kloehn gives us a tour of the many amenities to be found in a dumpster.

What do you think about living in one-could you do it?
