Stella McCartney continues her environmental efforts by partnering with a sustainably-minded biotech company to produce this one-of-a-kind luxury material. Find out where to see this dazzling dress and how McCartney is redefining luxury in the fashion industry.

Designer Stella McCartney is known for her forward-thinking, not just in her stunning fashion designs, but also in her use of materials. Since her brand launch in 2001, she has committed to producing a completely vegetarian brand — a novel and often frowned upon concept in the world of luxury fashion. Despite her refusal to compromise her ethics with common industry practice, she has successfully made a name for herself amongst the international fashion giants. From ready-to-wear women, men, and children’s apparel, as well as a collaboration with Adidas, the 2016 Olympic Games, and a fragrance line, McCartney is constantly expanding her scope and conscious influence.

Her latest undertaking: a vegan silk alternative that looks and feels just as elegant as its animal-based counterpart.

McCartney has never incorporated leather, furs, or animal-based glues into any of her products, but she has faced challenges in eliminating wools and silks. Although technology has made impressive strides in the production of quality vegan leather, replicating silk has proven to be far more difficult – until now. On July 20th, the designer announced her partnership with Bolt Threads, a San Francisco-based biotech company with a mission to create more sustainable and environmentally-friendly textiles through innovative use of technology and natural materials. Bolt is thrilled by the opportunity; its homepage reads, “Introducing Our New Best Friend: Stella McCartney.” Judging by McCartney’s gorgeous designs and Bolt’s sustainable practices, this is bound to be a beautiful friendship.

For their first collaboration, McCartney will create a dazzling gold shift dress made out of Bolt’s Microsilk, a yeast-based yarn inspired by spider’s silk. The revolutionary dress will debut in October at the New York Museum of Modern Art’s special exhibit, “Items: Is Fashion Modern?”, among other apparel icons, such as the Levi’s 501s, the Brenton shirt, the classic Little Black Dress, and the pearl necklace. The exhibit will explore one hundred and eleven items of clothing and accessories that have significantly influenced society and continue to impact our modern world. The museum has also invited a select few game changers in the fashion and textile industries, such as McCartney and Bolt, as a means to predict what items may revolutionize our future. With a bit of hope and innovation, perhaps this new silk-like material will become as prominent as the LBD.

The partners have not revealed when consumers can expect to see a Bolt Microsilk McCartney line at their nearest luxury department store, but Bolt promises the duo will continue to work together throughout 2017 and beyond “to pave the way for environmentally-friendly luxury fabric innovation.” During the announcement, McCartney echoed Bolt’s excitement, ”…It feels like everything is finally coming together and the dots are being connected between fashion, sustainability and tech innovation…to all work as one for a better planet. It is truly a modern and mindful approach to fashion.”

Through McCartney’s continued efforts in creating more conscious, ethically-produced, and environmentally responsible products, she is redefining the meaning of luxury fashion. In reference to her use of organic and synthetic materials, she suggests, “Owing to the scientific research that goes into creating these blended fibers and subsequently, their scarcity, innovative materials could be considered a true luxury, rather than leather, which has become a commodity.”

So, what is true luxury? In the modern sense, its meaning goes far beyond the price tag. Modern luxury requires integrity; it is the combination of exceptional quality, taste, and consciousness. There is a choice behind the sourcing and production of each item, and it comes with the promise of adhering to the highest level of ethical standards. In other words: it’s strutting down the street in a golden McCartney shift dress of our own–gorgeous and guilt-free.

Natallia Antanovich wanted to dress in a way that expressed her modern, feminine style, while also being a testament to her environmental awareness and desire to live sustainably on this planet. After struggling to source a wardrobe that was both high-quality and 100 percent natural (and gorgeous, of course!), she decided it was time to start her own clothing line. Econica was born.

“I remember always being well-dressed in tailored, comfortable clothes by my wonderful mom, who herself is an outstanding seamstress. She passed on her gift, and her standards of elegance and comfort, to me when I was a teenager back in Denmark,” Natallia recalls fondly. “Soon after making a few outfits for myself and my kids, I started getting lots of requests from friends and family to the point where I would be hard at work on these the entire weekend…I realized what a great idea opening an online shop would be.”

Natallia’s first experience with garment construction came well before the Econica seed was ever planted–she made her own prom dress. “…I worked tirelessly and meticulously to ensure that it had perfectly finished seams and a flawless fit. I was so proud of myself! Unfortunately, it was a hideous hue of vibrant lilac with sinfully large bows on the shoulders.”

Thankfully, she’s moved on from poufy shoulder bows and is now creating decidedly feminine women’s clothing that is both body-conscious and graceful. She’s a one-woman operation; designing, making patterns and sewing everything from scratch. Quality is still paramount and she shepherds each piece from start to finish.

She keeps a sketchbook with her at all times in case something should happen to inspire her. Those sketches eventually become fully realized patterns, at which point she makes a prototype that she personally test-drives. “It’s important to me that my designs make women look and feel beautiful, while being conscious of their clothes’ eco-friendly origins.”

Econica pieces are available in an incredible array of juicy colors (including this year’s trendy orchid) and rich, dark neutrals. Using eco-friendly fabrics in her work is Natallia’s biggest priority: sustainably-sourced organic hemp, cotton, bamboo and even super soft French terry. “It always boggled my mind how we could sacrifice our own health and the health of our planet for our wardrobe”, she says. “I knew I needed to find a compromise.”

Econica is sustainable by virtue of being classic–Natallia strives to provide women with comfortable clothing and lingerie they’ll wear for years; staples and wardrobe-builders that will never go out of style. The look is one of effortless elegance: the dress you throw on with strappy sandals for Sunday brunch, the cowl neck tunic that you wear with EVERYTHING because you can dress it up or down. “I adore ’60s style fashion with ultra feminine complex designs. I aim for a look that is classic, with clean lines and subtle feminine grace. I love to watch old Doris Day movies and always admire how impeccably she is dressed.”

“Being part of the creative process every step of the way is fascinating, but I do see Econica growing to something bigger. Not just a brand, but a concept, and ideal. I am finally launching my brand new Econica Boutique this month, which I hope will be the start to make my dream a reality.”

Designer David Peck shows the many colors of his Spring/Summer 2013 collection.

Fashion, David Peck makes clear, is more than just the clothes we wear. With his eponymous CROP by David Peck Spring/Summer 2013 collection, Peck shows that fashion is both transformative and character defining. (Translation: You are what you wear.)

Underpinning Peck’s “Once Upon a Dream” collection is a stream of narratives, both deeply personal to the designer and profoundly universal. The artistic fish motif, for instance, that swims across silk organza dresses, organic cotton sateen shifts and linen chiffon shirts, is transported from the characters of “Wynken, Blynken and Nod,” a popular poem by American writer Eugene Field.

His floral origami prints, radiating across pieces like the silk chiffon Arable Top and Laurie Trouser (below), traveled from Peck’s yesteryear love for the Child Craft Encyclopedias—the place from where he began his artistic pursuits.

Other garments speak from journeys later in life. His geographical dresses, skirts and shirts, imprinted with a historical Parisian map from 1850, hail from Peck’s love for his home of six years, where he studied fashion design at École Parsons  Paris. As Peck and I tour the garment and its subtle French centerpiece, we catch sight of the Louvre and the Seine en route to his former apartment.

Beyond the artistic magnificence of Peck’s designs—down to the careful back cutouts and the meticulous placement of seams—is the diversity of all he creates in a single season. Wearable for women across ages, passions and pursuits, he gives his wearer the ingredients to make the piece her own. Classic twists like the racer top Attonia Dress (below), the Havisham Gown from locally sourced viscose jersey (below) or the striped and plaid Elinore dress, made from entirely hand-woven cotton from India, bring playful sophistication to the forefront—day to night and year to year.

For Peck, though, the greatest fashion statement of all is the one he wears proudly: Made in the USA. Each collection is designed and stitched in his namesake production facility in Houston, Texas. There, he works to create his own collection stateside and produces for four other brands who also see the value in local. Through collaboration with the Greater Houston Partnership, Peck hopes this will only continue to grow, as companies take advantage of domestic skills, the large port that Houston offers and the efficiency that local manufacturing can create.

To further support local communities throughout the United States, 10 percent of profits from the complete Spring/Summer 2013 collection will go directly toward caring for homeless youth through the charge of Covenant House. Through such initiatives Peck upholds his founding vision to promote “Creative Opportunities,” abbreviated as CROP.

Dreams, Peck shows, really do come true.

Some more looks we love:

The country’s first-ever fashion week shows there’s more to Cambodian fashion than fainting garment workers.

These days, Cambodia is known more for its clothing manufacturing than its clothing design. But with the launch of the first-ever Cambodia Fashion Week, that’s about to change.

Festivities kicked off yesterday in the capital city of Phnom Penh and continue through November 5, with a full slate of fashion shows, invite-only receptions, celebrity studded after-parties, and all of the glitz and glamor you’d expect from an international fashion showcase.

But in Cambodia, Fashion Week takes on additional significance in a country where most people subsist on less than $2 a day, and the clothing manufacturing industry provides a much needed step out of extreme poverty for many rural poor. Difficult working conditions, child labor, and toxic waste still permeate the industry, a fact recently spotlighted after a string of mass fainting incidents in Phnom Penh factories – suppliers to fast fashion giants like H&M – hit the mainstream media.

Event organizers are hoping to trump that negative attention and are more focused on Cambodia Fashion Week highlighting the more positive side of Cambodian fashion: its ability to showcase the country’s rich artistic and craft-based heritage.

Keok’ Jay, Fall ’11

“There’s a lot of manufacturing here, but very little design,” says Rachel Faller, founder of Keok’Jay, a social enterprise that will debut its latest collection at CFW. “Fashion Week will be a great opportunity for Cambodia to create and promote its design identity.”

Faller is one of many local designers who are proving that it’s possible to produce great fashion while respecting human rights. Since 2008, she has worked with low-income, HIV-positive women to create sustainable apparel and accessories. Her latest collection is inspired by the sea, and makes plentiful use of recycled jersey and fabric scraps, but in a way that’s cohesive, not patchwork, she says. The collection will be sold at Keok’Jay’s three Cambodia retail locations and an online retailer located on their website.

Another ethical highlight of the week is the opening show from Eric Raisina, a Madagascar-born designer who has worked with traditional silk weavers to produce unique textiles for nearly a decade. His Siem Reap workshop employs nearly 30 Cambodian artisans, each groomed by Raisina himself, trained in a diverse set of skills, and paid a living wage.

Eric Raisina

Raisina’s new collection is inspired by the black orchid, a rare flower found only in Madagascar. “This collection will show exactly what Eric likes to do with silk in Cambodia,” says Christine Gleizes, Raisina’s publicity director. The show will also feature new prêt-à-porter items made from cotton, linen, and other fabrics found in local markets, which will be sold in Raisina’s new Phnom Penh boutique.

The week will culminate with an exclusive two-day shopping event featuring participating designers and local boutiques. The event will also include a social enterprise showcase, with projects and products from socially responsible businesses and NGOs. Unearthed are some great treasures including contemporary ikat handbags and accessories from Push Pull Cambodia; traditional krama check urban gear from Good Krama; pop-art inspired t-shirts from Friends International, an NGO that works with marginalized youth; and much more.

“Traditionally there is no social enterprise component to a Fashion Week,” says Emma Fountain, Marketing Advisor for Friends International and a showcase organizer. “But Cambodia is a special case. With the essence of the country still recovering, it is important to acknowledge this in a country where fashion is still very much emerging.”

Suzanne Rae presents spring ’12, proving pattern, flounce and tailored silhouettes can seamlessly blend.

Brooklyn designer Suzanne Rae’s influences from the New York art gallery scene, design ateliers of Costume National in Milan, and Morgane Le Fay in New York always permeate her designs and we are appreciative of that. In fact, we specifically look for such influences in her collections.

Spring ’12 continues to satisfy our eclectic souls, drawing inspiration from 19th century-Japan and Rae’s collaboration with photographer Renato D’Agostin and his body of work Tokyo Untitled, “reflecting a modest era with a zen like quality that is at the same time optimistic for a better tomorrow.”

Rae’s artistic draping of crepe de chine, silk chiffon, hemp jersey, raw silk and hemp jersey were skillfully employed into tailored, high-waisted pants and shorts, flowing bustles, versatile mini-dresses, trendy jumpers and printed bikinis. All pieces that were easily translatable from runway to street.

We loved the raffia capes for a fun editorial touch and the Bruce Lee flats that added an effect of effortlessness to each model, each a style icon in her own right.

Here are some of our favorite looks.

Beauty turns up in the strangest places.

I love that when you first glance at this necklace from VivaTerra, it looks so sweet. Don’t get me wrong, it is, but the fact that the brass casing are actually remnants from a rifle range gives the sweetness a little edge. The resourceful designer and metalworker who finds the brass bullet casings that she re-purposes as glittering jewelry hammers flat the shells of fired rounds, then assembles them into a loop of cascading flower petals strung on Japanese tasso silk.

Wear this and it’s like a powerful amulet to shoo negativity away.

Ikou-Tschüss is an indie brand that started as a hobby and has grown into a fully operating fashion business.

Ikou-Tschüss is Guya Marini and Carmen D’Apollonio, two friends who’ve coined their brand’s name on the fly: Ikou means ‘let’s go’ in Japanese and Tschüss means ‘bye’ in German. Since 2006 when the brand started, Marini and D’Apollonio have never gone anywhere but up in terms of how recognized the indie label has become within the greater fashion industry.

Their site says the label’s earliest beginnings began with the two designers meeting every summer in Zürich and exchanging ideas, but the lack of proximity kept their collaboration from coming immediately to fruition.

“Guya stayed active in Paris, doing her styling; Carmen, in Zürich and sometimes New York, was kept busy as the invaluable assistant to Swiss artist Urs Fischer. Then, meeting up again in the beginning of 2006, the two decided to focus exclusively on making handmade knitwear and croched silk foulards. Guya showed the pieces to her friend Livio and Stephan from the Parisian press office. Livio and Stephan were instantly taken with the knitwear and in their excitement planted the seeds for what was soon to become Ikou-Tschüss, demanding that Guya and Carmen formally create a label for the work they had brought in.”

When it comes to sustainability and still a strong fashion appeal, their main focus lies in sourcing quality materials. Most of their wool is either 100% cashmere or merino, and the silk comes from fair-trade locations in either South America or Tibet. They also incorporate recycled or vintage materials whenever possible and embrace the long-held tradition of knitting and crocheting which they themselves learned while growing up in the Swiss capital.

Their designs are made by hand and “the process of doing the work is vital to the form the design takes,” says the site, so production is staffed exclusively by grandmothers, who retain the old craftswomanly approach to handwork—skills that Guya and Carmen feel are disappearing today.
