It is like a changeable, ethereal butterfly – some of it is pure, lovely, and chaste, some of it is a little less so, and some of it is about as truly eco-friendly as the lead liner Cleopatra used to rim her eyes. Where does that leave the rest of us? Reading labels, following lawsuits, and running to keep up on what’s USDA Organic, certified organic, natural product certified, biodynamic, and more. So yeah, eco beauty is a little moody. (Or we are after navigating its waters.)

And hey, we’re all in this together. Luckily, there are few online boutiques in it with us. Check out our list of online eco boutiques dedicated to bringing the paraben-free word to the masses. Futurenatural has a wide selection of products for makeup, skin, hair, baby and more. Their site is easy-to-use and they are great about deciphering labels and providing in-depth list ingredients. In their own words, the company offers up “a product selection is perfectly edited, beautifully curated and most are thoughtfully designed to consider the environment.”

Spirit Beauty Lounge Spirit Beauty Lounge promises that “all of our organic and sustainable products come from companies who have clearly defined humane, ethical, and environmental policies ensuring the care of our planet and its inhabitants.” They also employ some great, green business practices. A member of one percent for the Planet, they donate one percent of sales to a network of 1,458 environmental organizations worldwide. Their facilities are green powered and they donate annually to Carbonfund.org.

Green Line Beauty This company was founded by Stacy Stilts, who has 16 years experience in natural cosmetics. They have a men’s section, offer a comprehensive guide to ingredients, and pledge to keep things toxin free. Be sure to check out their events section.

Beautorium Beautorium carries already well-known lines like John Masters Organics, Korres, Revolution Organics, and Weleda. They pledge that most of their brands are “certified natural, organic and/or vegetarian by the world’s most reliable independent third party organizations – and all are free from harmful ingredients.” They also offer colorful, easy-to-use system of symbols to indicate which products are cruelty-free and more.

Big Green Smile This U.K. site branches out from beauty, including cleaning products, dental hygiene, eco gadgets and more. But don’t worry about getting out your calculator for currency stress – you can click on a dollar sign to convert to U.S. prices. Big Green Smile offers products that are effective, natural and produced with the utmost consideration for the environment. As the company tells it, “we don’t believe in using chemicals where they aren’t needed, especially when there is a good natural alternative.”

The Organic Pharmacy This U.K. business aims to bring consumers “the best products, advice and treatments free from all the toxic ingredients commonly found in mainstream cosmetics and health products.” The Organic Pharmacy only carries their own lines of skincare, body, bath, makeup (called Organic Glam,) men’s and more. They also offer a complete line of dietary supplements.

Pristine Planet While Pristine Planet offers green comparison shopping on all lifestyle products, we have to say we’re impressed with their organization of green beauty. They have a great list of categories you can click on that immediately bring up eco-offerings from various vendors. Want fragrance free skin care? Click and several come up. You can also sort by certifications, ingredients and more.

Sephora Natural & Organic Yes, the old stalwart beauty superstore offers a natural and organic selection. And they have set their own standards of what it means to be natural. This means their natural labeled products contain few to no parabens, phthalates, sulfates, synthetic dyes and more. We applaud larger corporations taking on green products and labeling – you still may want to study the labels and consult the Skin Deep database to determine your comfort level with product ingredients.
