I would like build a staircase using vintage Spanish tiles like designer Betsy Burnham. Betsy believes in mixing thrift with couture, my beloved style. The unapologetic use of colors and patterns is spot on – both ponderous and exotic.

Today…

I can use stencils to create a Moroccan inspired staircase. Melanie Royal offers some pretty stencils for your home projects, particularly in the black and cream color palette, which is sophisticated. The mix of patterns is duly lovely. Care of My Marrakesh.

Metaphoric and literal, these staircases make us stop and ponder.

In life, we spend a lot of time mounting and alighting from steps – both figuratively and literally. We go up. We go down. On occasion, our lives spiral in every which way, but always there’s another step on the horizon. We take it.

Considering staircases as a purely utilitarian feature to get us from one level to another, and as a metaphorical reference to the ups and downs of a life lived either passively or intentionally, we found 12 staircases that make us stop and ponder; laugh and wonder.
