1. Cocodune

Cocodune’s mission is simple: “to help modern women discover their perfect fit without the hassle—at the right price, all from the comfort of their own home.” Hmm, we dig the sound of that.

All of this brand’s swimwear is designed to keep its shape from morning to night. That means you should be able to catch waves all day without your suit slipping, sliding, or bunching. The brand’s suits are made with “one part upcycled materials and one part extra-light Lycra, instead of using Spandex, which 99% of swim brands use,” Matthias Metternich, the company’s founder, says. Because of this combination, “you end up with something that’s soft as silk, yet holds its shape and color four times longer,” Metternich adds.

The company also has a very open return policy, plus a “concierge” service that will break down the fit of each of its suits. Still not sure about a suit? Try Cocodune’s “Home Try On” process. Sizes XS through XL.

2. Giejo

Gabby Sabharwal, Giejo’s founder, wanted to create a brand of swimwear that wasn’t too skimpy or expensive—she also wanted her prints to be sustainable. She succeeded.

This American-made brand fashions all of its swimwear out of vintage and reclaimed textiles sourced from New York City’s Garment District, so, all of its designs are limited. “Once the fabrics and designs are finalized, the swimsuits are produced in small batches in New Jersey, which means less waste, less energy, and less leftover stock,” Vogue reports.

The brand features a variety of prints that can be mixed and matched to fit your specific fashion profile. Sizes XS through L.

3. Vaute Couture

This all-vegan fashion line recently jumped into the deep end of the swimsuit-making pool—this is the first year the brand is making and selling its sustainable, vegan suits.

“Once we found we could make swimsuits out of recycled carpet fibers, it was a great match for the Vaute fashion formula—which is function plus ethics plus fashion,” Leanne Mai-Ly Hilgart, the company’s owner, says.

The suits come in a variety of fits in styles—everything from funky two-pieces to one-pieces with sexy cutouts. All of the suits are cut and sewn in New York City’s Garment District. Sizes XS through XXL.

Note: We searched for sustainable plus-sized swimwear, but couldn’t find much. One plus-sized brand we did find was Swimsuits For All—but the bummer is, these suits are not sustainable. So, if you know of a brand that sells sustainable plus-sized suits, please send the information our way!

The fabric uses Repreve recycle nylon fiber to conserve resources and LYCRA XTRA LIFE fiber to extend the life of each swimsuit far beyond that of traditional spandex products. Meanwhile, Vitamin A uses sustainable fibers like tencel and choose factories that conserve water and energy use. The company also donates a portion of its profits to environmental organizations.

3. Odina Surf

Founded in 2010, Odina Surf set off to fill a void in the swimwear industry for active women desiring a sustainable, highly-functional swimsuit that was still fashionable. The company worked with surfers, not models, to gather feedback on their suits’ fit and function. Odina uses recycled nylon and organic cotton tags. Their website is also hosted on a 100 percent wind-power server!

4. Zero + Maria Cornejo

Locally produced in NYC, Zero + Maria Cornejo is a swimwear brand that is owned and operated by women. It uses recycled materials when it can and is made out of 100 percent recycled yarn from pre- and post-consumer waste.

5. Curlee Bikini

Crafted in Austin, TX, Curlee Bikini’s EcoLUX Swimwear line began in 2009. Its suits are made from remnant, vintage fabrics and organic materials. The brand also specializes in one-of-a-kind bespoke suits. The company’s office is surrounded by bamboo trees and garden beds.

Gorgeous red carpet-worthy dresses made from upcycled Speedo fabric, from suits worn by Olympic swimmers.

Now that the Olympics are over, and the American swimmers nabbed more gold medals in swimming than ever before, what happens to all those old Speedos? UK-based designer Orsola de Castro has been making high-end fashion from recycled materials since 1997, through the fashion label From Somewhere. One of the brand’s newest collections is made from, you guessed it, upcycled Speedo fabric.

The high tech quality and intense accent colors of the fabric lends a strange, yet very fashion forward quality to de Castro’s elegantly tailored dresses. If it wasn’t for the small logo that makes an appearance on some of the garments, you would never guess what they were made from.

De Castro runs From Somewhere with her partner Filippo Ricci, and the two are also the founders and curators of The British Council Estethica during London Fashion Week. They want to use their fashion label to further the discussion about overproduction and waste, two very urgent issues that the fashion industry needs to figure out how to deal with. To de Castro and Ricci, upcycling becomes a design solution to this environmental problem.

The label originally began their collaboration with Speedo in 2010 when a stock of their LZR Racer Elite suit became redundant following FINA regulations regarding competitive swimwear. The company contacted From Somewhere to help create something with the waste, and that’s how the first collection, which debuted at Estethica, was born.

The new colorblocked “Unity” gown is made from offcuts produced in the making of Speedo’s Fastskin3 Super Elite swimsuit, which was used by the athletes at this summer’s Olympic Games in London. All the colors in the “Unity” dress represent all nations coming together in a non-competitive way and are also a reference to water. De Castro used the stretch of the fabric to emphasize different parts of the female body, and she also utilized Pinterest to gather inspiration and visual references.

“The idea was to combine sportswear and fashion in a way that it is 100% fashion but also 100% sportswear,” says de Castro. She also wants this dress to inspire the confidence of an Olympic athlete in any woman that wears it.
