These three tea tree oil uses can help clear up skin, make hair shinier, and ward off allergies and sinus congestion. With just a drop or two, tea tree oil may help clarify and cleanse.

Note: Before trying any of these tea tree oil uses, do a patch test to ensure you don’t experience any negative reaction to tea tree oil which can be potent. Dilute two drops of tea tree oil in one teaspoon of a carrier oil such as cold pressed olive oil. Then dab the mixture on your arm and leave for at least 24 hours. Avoid exposing the patch of skin to water and preferably cover with a bandage during this time. If any redness or irritation occurs, do not use again without consulting a medical professional.

3 Tea Tree Oil Uses

1. Keeping Skin Clear

Ditch the skin-drying salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide which tend to do more harm than good. Instead, reach for tea tree oil which can cleanse the pores and clear up pimples overnight. To use tea tree oil as a spot treatment, try the following:

After washing face and moisturizing, dampen a cotton round or washcloth with water. Put a drop of tea tree oil on the damp cotton round or washcloth and then press to pimple for a few seconds. Let sit overnight and wash off any oil residue in the morning. If you have sensitive skin, get the cloth very wet and ring out a bit after adding the drop of oil to dilute it further.

2. Removing Product Buildup from Hair

One of the negative side effects I’ve experienced from using natural shampoos and conditioners is product buildup. After a while, I’ll find the shampoo and conditioner leaves a residue behind after each wash. For a while, I would just switch shampoos which would solve the problem until it recurred.

It turns out, tea tree oil works wonderfully to remove product buildup. Get a small travel size shampoo bottle and fill ¾ full with your shampoo. Add two drops tea tree oil and shake well. Once a month, use the tea tree shampoo to remove product buildup. Rinse and condition afterward.

3. Clearing Sinuses

Tea tree oil is one of my favorite essential oils to help keep my sinuses clear and allergies at bay. I love adding it to my diffuser whenever I’m experiencing sinus congestion. If you don’t have a diffuser though, you can still get its amazing benefits. Bring a pot of water to boil. Transfer to a large glass bowl and then add five to six drops tea tree oil. Breathe in the steam, cover your head with a towel to maximize, for a few minutes. Be cautious not to burn yourself with the hot steam.

Do you ever pass those big, expensive bottles of essential oils at the natural foods store and wonder who needs that much? Most of us are used to using just a few drops at a time; after all, they’re super-concentrated. But next time, you won’t blink an eye at the thirty dollar price tag on that 4-ounce bottle of tea tree oil. Why? Because it’s possibly the most powerful essential oil there is, with dozens of medicinal, beauty and domestic uses. Seriously: you need tea tree oil. Lots of it. Here are just 10 examples of what you can do with it.

Mold Killer

I recently had a knock-down, drag-out fight with mold. Things got ugly fast when a leak in the basement wasn’t fixed quickly enough, and before long, mold was all over everything that was stored down there. While I had to throw a lot of things away, I saved a lot thanks to a really easy and natural solution that kills virtually all strains of fungus – plain white vinegar with about a teaspoon of tea tree oil added to it, in a spray bottle. Spray liberally and vigorously wipe all affected surfaces, but don’t rinse.

Laundry Scent and Booster

Anyone who’s ever dealt with dirty cloth diapers, cloth menstrual pads or a post-illness load of laundry knows that sometimes, your clothes and linens need a little something more than just plain old laundry detergent. But don’t break out the bleach. A teaspoon of tea tree oil in your wash water will kill any germs and other gross stuff – just hang them out in the sun to dry and stains will disappear, too.

Insect Repellent and Bite Soother

When all else fails – even trusty old citronella – tea tree oil keeps annoying mosquitoes, gnats and other buzzing and biting bugs far away. Pour about an ounce of tea tree oil and four ounces of witch hazel into a spray bottle, and shake it up before applying. Both ingredients are soothing to existing bites. You can add some cedar, lemongrass, or lavender to make it even more powerful and prettier-smelling, too.

All-Purpose Cleaner

Sometimes referred to as ‘Mother Nature’s most powerful antiseptic’, tea tree oil is a great addition to just about any homemade all-purpose cleaner recipe. Here’s my favorite: add 2 cups of hot water to 2 tablespoons of 20 Mule Team Borax, ½ teaspoon of liquid dish soap and ½ teaspoon of tea tree oil in a spray bottle; shake it and spray it anywhere germs lurk, like doorknobs and toilets.

Relief from Chest Colds

Put 2-3 drops of tea tree oil in a basin of hot, steaming water, then cover your head with a towel and inhale the steam for up to 10 minutes. Since tea tree oil has antiviral properties, it can help keep that cold from getting out of hand, especially if you catch it early enough.

Cold Sores

Nothing says “kiss me” like a hideous, contagious eruption right next to your mouth. Tea tree oil can help make it go away fast, since its antiviral effect subdues the herpes simplex virus that causes cold sores. Apply a few drops to the sore with a cotton swab once a day until it’s gone, and don’t forget to pop some lysine, an amino acid that has been proven to stop the herpes virus from replicating.

Gum and Sticker Remover

Whether it’s a wad of gum someone stuck under your dining table or a stubborn label on a gift, tea tree oil is so astringent that it cuts through sticky substances with ease. Just pour on a few drops on a cotton ball and rub away.

Acne Buster

The active ingredient in tea tree oil, terpinen-4-ol, is thought to kill the the bacteria that colonizes our pores and throws the disgusting, unsightly parties that result in acne. Just a drop added to a paste of baking soda and castile soap makes a super-effective natural face and body scrub that will also buff away the dead skin cells that make breakouts even worse. Some people can be sensitive to high concentrations of this powerful oil, so if you get a rash, discontinue use.

Athlete’s Foot and Other Fungal Issues

As gross as it sounds, the same properties that make tea tree oil such a potent mold-killer make it great for the fungus that causes athlete’s foot, too. The same goes for any other fungal infection, like ringworm, dandruff and nail infections. Mix a few drops of tea tree oil in a base oil like sweet almond, olive or coconut and apply it to the affected area, add it to your shampoo or add it to hot water for a foot soak.

Head Lice Zapper

What do you do when your kid’s got a head full of creepy-crawly, blood-sucking lice? Blast those suckers into oblivion as soon as possible. But many parents inadvertently expose their children to even worse health problems when they resort to noxious chemicals. Try tea tree oil first – research shows that it can dislodge mature lice. Mix a teaspoon of tea tree with 4 teaspoons of either olive or coconut oil, rub it into the scalp and leave it on for 15 minutes; then use a nit comb before washing the mixture out.

I love marinara sauce. But without fail, 24 hours later, my lip-glossed mouth could make a small child cry and have the family pet running for cover. The culprit in my case is garlic. Sure, I’m not alone, but halitosis is a real turn off. Research has proven that among some culprits are:

Garlic – is absorbed into the bloodstream and secreted by the lungs. While not everyone is affected, I certainly am

Bacteria – volatile sulfur compounds (VSC), such as hydrogen sulfide and methyl mercaptan, harbors on the teeth, gums and tongue

Food particles – become lodged between teeth

Plaque – on or below the gum line

Dieting – to excess may cause ketoacidosis, the breakdown of chemicals during fasting, which smells awful

Smoking – dries out the mouth and contributes to periodontal disease

Diseases – such as lung infections, kidney failure and chronic reflux of stomach acids produce odors

Milk Intolerance

20 Natural Ways to Keep Your Breath Fresh

If you’re not ready to drop $2,000 on a Halimeter, which will analyze the VSC’s in your mouth and let you know if your breath is offensive, here are natural ways to clean up your act.

Brush – after every meal, and be sure that your toothbrush is in good shape. A chewed-up, disfigured brush will miss those hard-to-reach areas.

Herb Pharm Breath Tonic – is my all time favorite. The non-aerosol spray is made from a sugar-free blend of certified organic peppermint, cinnamon, ginger, and clove extracts that leave my mouth feeling fabulous and clean.

Tongue Scraper – This smooth plastic or metal tool glides over the tongue and removes dead cells and bacteria

Floss – removes plaque and food that you may not even realize was stuck. I keep a container in my office desk

Water – According to the Mayo Clinic, drink water – not coffee, soft drinks or alcohol. Chewing gum or sucking on candy (preferably natural) also stimulates saliva, washing away food particles and bacteria.

Fenugreek – put one teaspoon of fenugreek seeds in four cups of cold water, boil, then simmer for fifteen minutes over a low flame. Strain and drink like tea.

Guava – unripe guava has been said to aid bad breath as it contains tannic and phosphoric acids.

According to health 911, there are a few off-the-beaten-path remedies, including:

Apple cider vinegar – swallow a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar just before each meal (you may want to add it to a glass of water)

Alfalfa – alfalfa tablets have been said to aid bad breath

Anise – the licorice-flavored seed, may aid in reducing bacteria

Chlorophyll – Try liquid or chlorophyll tablets. Chlorophyll has a deodorizing effect

Clove Tea/Mouthwash – Cloves are a powerful antiseptic. Make a tea by putting three whole or 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves in two cups of hot water and steep for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Pour through a fine strainer and use as a mouthwash or gargle twice a day.

Fennel – Slowly chew the leaves and allow the saliva to build up in your mouth. Or, mix the contents of a fennel capsule with baking soda, make into a paste, and brush your teeth, gums and tongue with it.

Lemon – If you can stand it, a lemon wedge sprinkled with salt will help stop onion or garlic breath.

Parsley & Mint – Chewing parsley or mint leaves has been a remedy used for thousands of years. These herbs are especially good if garlic and onions are the source of your bad breath. Parsley is very high in chlorophyll. Chew a few parsley sprigs dipped in vinegar for immediate relief. If you swallow the leaves after chewing them they will be digested and continue to provide breath freshness for quite a while. These plants seem to reduce the production of intestinal gas by promoting better digestion.

Natural gum – such as glee, is made with spearmint or peppermint essential oils. These oils kill odor-causing bacteria, and the chewing action stimulates the production of saliva which helps combat bad breath.

Sage – contains essential oils with antibacterial properties that help neutralize one of the causes of bad breath. Chew raw leaves.

Spirulina – is a very good source of chlorophyll and can be purchased either in capsule or loose form. It’s suggested to start with 500 mg three times a day, but please check with your medical professional first!

Tea tree oil – derived from the leaves of the native Australian Melaleuca alternifolia tree, tea tree oil contains antiseptic compounds, which make it a powerful disinfectant. Try using a toothpaste containing tea tree oil, or put a few drops of tea tree oil on your toothbrush alone, or with your regular toothpaste. It has a strong aromatic flavor.

Baking Soda – Brushing your teeth with baking soda will help reduce the acidity in your mouth, which is less inviting for bacteria. Combine two tablespoons of dried lemon or orange rind, 1/4 cup of baking soda, and two teaspoons of salt.
