<p style="text-align: left;"><em>Cuttings is a mixed media collaboration between artists Vincent Breed and Matali Crasset.</em></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Glass as object can induce paradoxical imagery of fragile yet strong, dense yet clear, liquid and solid. Molten glass is transmuted by the magic of air, the shape of its mold, the bounce of light and color.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Dutch artist <a href="http://vincent-breed.com/" target="_blank">Vincent Breed</a> has breathed life into objects for French designer <a href="http://www.matalicrasset.com/" target="_blank">Matali Crasset</a> for about 10 years. Their latest collaboration, <em>Cuttings,</em> is on view at the <a href="http://www.granvillegallery.com/" target="_blank">Granville Gallery</a> in Paris through July 1, 2011.</p><div id="inContentContiner"><!-- /4450967/ES-In-Content -->

      googletag.pubads().refresh([adslot4]);
    });
    </script>
    </div>

<p style="text-align: left;"><a rel="attachment wp-att-84237" href="http://ecosalon.com/heartbeat-vincent-breed-matali-crasset-glass-from-wood-cuttings/blowing-the-cutting/"><img class="size-medium wp-image-84237 aligncenter" src="http://ecosalon.com/wp-content/uploads/Blowing-the-cutting-300x173.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="173" /></a></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">The work is a sensual blending of the memory of cuttings from branches that form structures into which Breed pours glass and then teases out voluptuous objects with his breath. Crassat explains:<em> </em></p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><em>I wanted to work closely with Vincent. The starting point was to make a suite of objects which would not be predetermined by Vincent&#8217;s blowing and to make the pieces without a mould</em>.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a rel="attachment wp-att-84239" href="http://ecosalon.com/heartbeat-vincent-breed-matali-crasset-glass-from-wood-cuttings/cutting-mold/"><img class="size-medium wp-image-84239 aligncenter" src="http://ecosalon.com/wp-content/uploads/cutting-mold-242x300.jpg" alt="" width="242" height="300" /></a></p>
<p>Glass melts at temperatures as high as 3180°F. In this body of work we see the burnt patterns from the top of the wood, which forms a sort of engraving on the bottom of the finished piece. We are left with the memory of the process, and a questioning into each work as it takes on its own impression of the original holder, leading one to ponder the power in fragility and the persistence of memory.</p>

Her personal blog, <a href="http://mixingreality.com/" target="_blank">mixingreality</a>, speaks to these topics daily, and here at EcoSalon, she takes a weekly look at the intersection of eco and art. We call it heARTbeat.</p>
