Looking to start a new collection? Or maybe you want to make a more sustainable kitchenware choice? Consider starting a vintage kitchenware collection.

Not everything new is better. In fact, many old things are downright fantastic and that goes for vintage kitchenware collectibles. Whether you’re looking for practical additions to your kitchen or you’ve caught the collecting bug, vintage kitchenware is ubiquitous. And not only is it a more sustainable choice than buying new, it’s also a less expensive choice and one with a cool retro vibe, too!

Not sure you can tell the difference between Milk Glass and Jadeite? Read on to learn more about the most common types of vintage kitchenware you are likely to come across.

A Vintage Kitchenware Collection Primer

Image via Giddies

Depression Glass

Depression glass is machine-pressed tinted or clear translucent glassware that was produced during the 1920s – 1940s. It was widely distributed for free or at a low cost as giveaways or initiatives by companies looking to lure in customers. It became a popular collectible in the 1960s.

Ironstone Pottery

Ironstone pottery is often referred to as “poor man’s pottery” because it was the mass-produced alternative to pottery. First produced in the UK in the early nineteenth-century, ironstone collectibles are prized for their heft and stunning whiteness.

Image via Onmykitchentable

Pyrex

Everyone loves vintage brightly-colored and patterned Pyrex dishes from the ’50s, ’60s, and ’70s. Not only are they appropriately kitschy, but they are still quite functional in the kitchen! Pyrex is also ubiquitous on Etsy, on Ebay, and at thrift stores, estate sales, and yard sales.

Image via TheBrownSuitcase

Jadeite

Jadeite kitchenware comes in a stunning color of green. Jadeite is nothing more than milk glass that has color added to it. Produced by the Anchor Hocking Company it first hit American shelves in 1942. Martha Stewart has an envious collection of Jadeite.

Image via TheVintageFind1

Teacups

While not unique to a specific era or time period, many like to collect vintage teacups for the unique patterns and colors they feature. Your collection starts with just one!

Image via theSWEETstand

Cake Plates

By the same token, cake stands are also not limited to a specific time period, and a collection might feature milk glass, depression, and ironstone cake stands. The only limit to this collection is how much time and space you have.

Image via VintageUSSRera

Enamelware

Enamelware kitchenware is made from glass that is fused to steel or iron, which creates a smooth, hard glass finish over the metal. Enamelware got its start in the 1800s as a way to reduce the chemical reaction of cooking directly in iron pots. It was also lighter-weight and more affordable. Vintage enamelware can be found at estate sales, thrift stores, and more.

Image via JeniSandbergVintage

Milk Glass

Milk glass describes opaque white-colored glass that can be either blown or pressed. While white glass had been around for centuries before, it didn’t gain popularity until the late-nineteenth century and remained popular through the Depression.

Anyone over a certain age will remember when school buildings had clocks like these, and maybe a few school buildings even still feature them. If you are going for that institutional look, by all means, add this beauty to your wall.

The featured homes differ in style, but all highlight some of the most drool-worthy takes on retro design around. Spotlighted homes run the gamut from a minimalist loft in London to a chic ranch house in Palm Springs.
Each section is devoted to a different home and riffs on a central theme found in the home. The ideal way to read this book is to flip through the whole book looking at the delicious photos and then focus in on those chapters that speak to you. Chapter highlights include Graphic Glamour, Back at the Ranch, Best of British, Danish Delight, California Dreaming and more!

This book it not meant as a strictly adhered to design doctrine, but is actually intended to be an inspiration-filled resource to jumpstart your own creative design. “Living retro does not demand close adherence to any particular set of style rules,” writes Andrew Weaving in the introduction. “There are no limits other than the chronological parameters the look spans, roughly from the 1950s to the late 1970s. Instead, living retro is a multi-faceted look that ranges from sophisticated glamour to pared-down chic, allowing its followers to cherry-pick their favorite pieces from the cream of twentieth-century design.” Sounds dreamy and utterly divine.

Andrew Weaving is the owner of Century Design in London. The gallery specializes in mid-century modern design, focusing on both originals and re-editions, plus some work by new designers. His other books include “Understanding Modern”, “Playful Home” and the best-selling “Modern Retro” (also published by Ryland Peters & Small). A passionate collector of all things retro, Andrew lives in London and France and owns historic mid-century modern homes in Florida and Palm Springs as well as an Art Deco beach house in Essex.

Repurpose vintage home decor goods because it looks cool–and because it’s better for the environment.

No matter what your decorating style, there is always room to repurpose vintage home decor goods to add both form and functionality. Whether your space can be more accurately described rustic, boho, modern country, Scandinavian, mid-century, or is actually just a mishmash of leftover college furniture and whatever your neighbors have put out on the curb, get inspired to repurpose with vintage home decor goods.

Almost everything can be reused or repurposed. From the ubiquitous mason jars to the more elusive letterpress type cabinets, and everything in between, all you need is a little imagination and inspiration to give vintage goods new life. You are on your own for the imagination part, but we have got the inspiration covered for you here!

Finding vintage goods is as easy as checking out your local thrift shops, estate sales, yard sales, CraigsList, Freecycle, and even Etsy and Ebay.

Repurposed Vintage Home Decor Goods

1. Picnic Coolers – Take the lid off (keeping it on could pose a risk for children and pets) and this 40-year-old Coleman Picnic Cooler could work as a great storage spot for everything from magazines and children’s books to yarn and recycling.

2. Pie Safes – Pie safes were used to keep pies and other baked goods fresh back in the days before refrigeration and air conditioning. This tin tabletop or counter version would add some vintage chic to your space and would be a clever place to store spices in the kitchen.

3. Vintage Mirrors – Glam up your space with the addition of vintage mirrors instead of buying new ones from some big box store. Pick a design period that will match well with your decorating style.

4. Old Maps – Looking to wallpaper a room or a to decoupage a piece of furniture? Consider using vintage maps instead. Or use old maps to create unique DIY wall art. Troll yard sales, barn sales, and more for unique map finds. This vintage pull down style school map would make for a real conversation piece.

5. Vintage Suitcases – Old suitcases can be repurposed in a number of ways. Use them as under the bed storage containers, turn a stack of them into a functional occasional table, or even use them as shelves for all your bric-a-brac and knickknacks.

6. Sewing Machine Tables – Old sewing machine tables are infinitely useful if you want to get crafty. They can be used for everything from bathroom vanities to a drink station like this repurposed example.

7. Metal Headboards – Metal bedsteads can be repainted and used as headboards or turned into decorative wall art, room dividers, used for hanging jewelry storage, or as a garden trellis.

Cleverly display your collections with these simple ideas that will show off your most prized possessions.

Whether you collect antiques, vinyl records, or vintage Star Wars toys, it’s a given that you are proud of your collection and want to show it off. While some kinds of collectibles need to be kept in their original packaging and are not suitable for display, most of the things we collect are intended to be put on display and not hidden away in the closet.

But it can be difficult to come up with clever ways to incorporate your collections into your home decor. Some collections have inherent display challenges–your items are too small, too big, or too unwieldy–but no matter what you collect, we think there is a way to fit it into your home decor. From guitar picks to vintage teacups, don’t hide your collection away, display it proudly.

Here are some creative solutions for how to display various types of collections.

Display Your Collections Cleverly

Frame It – Turn those postcards or vintage sports banners into framed works of art. Curate small items together in one large frame or frames larger items on their own. Framing can also have the bonus of preserving your collections.

Picture Frame Hanger – Use repurposed distressed frames and small nails to hang and display everything from vintage necklaces to holiday ornaments.

Gallery Wall – If you collect colorful plates, tea trays, or illustration prints, create a stunning gallery wall to show off your pieces. Not only does it highlight your collection, but it creates a very cool effect.

Shelve It – For breakable collections that you want to display, but keep out of reach, consider adding a shelf all the way around the room just below the ceiling. Of course, adjust the height according to your collection.

Create Vignettes – Don’t be afraid to mix and match your collections to create vignettes around you home. For example, display your owl figurines on a table with framed floral and feather prints on the wall above the table.

Birdcage Storage – Use vintage tabletop birdcages to display and store your knick-knack collections. Not only is it a smart idea, but it also has the added benefit of keeping your collection items from getting swiped onto the floor.

Type Cabinets – If you are lucky enough to find an old typesetter’s cabinet, snap it up. They are perfect for hanging on the wall and displaying tiny collectibles.

Use Other Unexpected Containers – Repurpose and use other unexpected display props. Display vintage Nancy Drew books in an old suitcase, store marbles in a fishbowl, or Pez dispensers in apothecary jars.

Hang From the Ceiling – Depending on what you collect, consider hanging your collection items on invisible fishing wire from the ceiling to make it appear as if your collection is suspended in the air. This technique would work perfectly for everything from globes and retro thermoses to driftwood and stuffed animals.

If you enjoyed “Sideways,” the wine movie that swept the nation in 2004, and you crave another book with the fast-paced thrill of the “Da Vinci Code,” then David Baker’s “Vintage” is for you.

This quick-paced novel follows our bumbling hero, Bruno, a failing food writer with two long-ago successes, now falling victim to his own alcoholism, in a search for a lost French World War II vintage and a journey to regain the trust of his estranged wife and family and his talent as a writer.

“Vintage” employs Bruno’s second book, a guide to wooing lost loves with food, as a primary source. Wherever Bruno is and with whomever he is talking — a Chicago cabbie, a long-time customer of his Alsatian mother’s food shop, even a convicted Russian mobster — he is always able to give them the recipe they need. If he is our superhero, this is his superpower.

    });

The food elements ring true in the writing; recipes are described in great detail and truly bring the story on the pages to life.

The book does have its faults. With its quick-paced nature, the characterization of the different people in the story is sometimes confused, a flaw that is not helped with point-of-view transitions that can prove sloppy and disorienting. Bruno’s view of his family and his relationships, for instance, is often a bit trite. We are left starved for emotion — it’s hard to know what the navel-gazing Bruno really feels, as he is a fairly hedonistic and very unreliable narrator. Who is he really attracted to? Who is he really in love with? Is he a pure hedonist, as it sometimes feels, or is he really a family man? The pace of the novel occasionally allows for ellipses on these problems, but they also mean that the ending, which wraps up some of these emotional and personal questions for us, gives us a bit of a ‘too little, too late’ impression.

Aside from these characterization flaws, the novel is quite unique, particularly in its form. I have never before seen a food-based adventure, a fast-paced thriller that leaves time for picnics and excellent bottles of European wine. The vision of Europe portrayed in the book, filled with parties that strangers are invited to and impromptu train picnics, may be highly romanticized, and yet this is forgiven: this is, after all, how Bruno actually sees it and lives it.

If you’re still on the lookout for a quick end-of-summer read, pick up “Vintage.” It’s a surprising book that’s lots of fun and may even leave you a bit hungry.

It’s no secret that consignment shops can be fashion gold mines. “Is that a Dolce&Gabbana dress for $75?” Yes, dreams can come true. But beyond the wallet-friendly style porn of such establishments, the conversation is turning to the eco-chic side of vintage.

Fashion pathfinders have been going in this direction for a few years now, to reduce waste and introduce mission-focused elements to the way they conduct business, or the products they sell. Betabrand, among others, has a policy of creating creating seasonal, one-time products with any fabric that’s left after making clothes, rather than letting it go unused. The fundamental environmental plus-side of consignment shops, however, is rather intuitive: Recycling.

That seems to be the bottom line of Greene Street, a quintessentially SoHo-esque boutique that emphasizes, above all else, the ecological benefits of consignment shopping. Though Greene Street has several tri-state area locations, it’s this one, with its brick exterior and close proximity to the likes of Chanel and DSQUARED2, that truly stands to make eco-chic effortlessly fabulous. “When you shop at Greene Street,” states the retailer’s blog, “you’re finding one of a kind, quality pieces and helping to eliminate the estimated 68 pounds of clothing that can be discarded by the average person yearly.”

Stylistically, there isn’t much that sets Greene Street apart from others in the consignment space. The model is simple: Bring in your high-quality, used items, and earn 40 percent on whatever is sold. It is, however, unique in its emphasis on eco-fashion, especially in this lower Manhattan neighborhood. In large part, SoHo carries what some describe as an aspirational character, embodied by the super-wealthy shoppers that frequent the area. Greene Street, however, leverages its adjacency to such a coveted setting, to advertise an opportunity for consignors to make a profit for good. It speaks to the “quality, not quantity” philosophy echoed by designer Vivienne Westwood. If clothing is made and treated well, as high-end pieces often are, it benefits both the buyer and the seller: The former, because it lasts longer (at a discount, no less), and the latter, because it’s more likely to resell. Either way, because this practice reduces the need to procure newly-furbished clothing, the planet comes out as a clear winner.

It could be said that Greene Street, which was established in 1997, is something of a pioneer in the green consignment space. While similar shops are beginning to appear, at least two of which contain “EcoChic” in their names, few seem to really emphasize the environmental benefits of consignment quite like Greene Street does. It paves the way for further mission-focused opportunities, such as partnerships with like-minded social enterprises, and a model for retailers, new and existing alike, to follow.

One King’s Lane is a treasure trove—quite literally. If you haven’t scoured through its near endless listing of incredible one-of-a-kind vintage items for sale, you’re in for a treat, especially when it comes to vintage chic furniture.

It’s pretty amazing how well-made furniture can last for decades or even centuries! (Can’t say that, can you Ikea?) There’s just something magical about vintage. Like you’re stepping (sitting) into a fairy tale. Not only do vintage chic furniture pieces have incredible stories to tell, but they have timeless style too. Whether Midcentury Modern, Victorian or a Chippendale era piece of furniture, vintage items can be mixed and matched for a shabby chic or retro look. And while sustainably-made new items are worthy investments as well, isn’t vintage the ultimate in sustainability?

2013’s contribution to the list of iconic fashion films is David O. Russell’s “American Hustle”, in which we’re thrust loudly into the mega-glam scene of the late ’70s/early ’80s.

“Annie Hall”. “The Great Gatsby”. “Bonnie & Clyde”. “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”. There are films in which fashion commands your attention and often steals the show, sometimes giving the only memorable performance. “Desperately Seeking Susan”, anyone?

Now, the “American Hustle” look harkens us back to a bygone era. Halston’s hip-hugging pantsuits and dangerously plunging necklines gave us a new feminine silhouette to wear while the jangling joyride of disco screeched to a halt in the impending face of Reganomics and some of the worst unemployment rates in U.S. history. This look is body conscious, sensual, and borderline garish. And while it is doubtful that anyone will be rushing out to emulate Roslyn’s (Jennifer Lawrence) impossibly high-maintenance up-dos anytime soon, you can bet your strobe light that Amy Adams’ Sydney will be a style icon for years to come. (Or at least until the next great fashion film emerges!)

GET THE (Eco-Friendly) LOOK

Play Dress Up

You can always pop into your local Goodwill, antique mall or vintage clothing emporium, but if you prefer the instant gratification of keyword searches or want something specific, there’s a treasure trove of late-seventies fashion on Etsy and Ebay . And if you have a bigger budget, 1st dibs is teeming with incredible museum-quality couture and prêt-à-porter from the period, like this 70s stunner by Holly’s Harp.

Great keywords to search are Halston, Bob Mackie, DVF, Studio 54, Courreges, pantsuit, halter, vintage maxi, etc. A lot of dealers are wising up to the “American Hustle” trend and have started using it as a keyword, too! Both Etsy and 1st dibs have searches that let you easily drill down to certain time periods and style, which is so helpful.

We found this drop-dead vintage Halston piece on Ebay.

Feeling crafty? You can always fire up the sewing machine, buy a vintage designer pattern and make your own gown with vintage fabric.

Put it together

Three words: Big. Gold. Hoops. We found some great handmade ones on Etsy with way more character than the multitude of mass-produced jewelry on the market.

It’s impossible to be ’70s glamorous without a giant pair of sunglasses. “American Hustle” showcased a few great pair of ombre lenses and we hit up Etsy again for some incredible specs at excellent prices, like this perfect pair of vintage Courreges.

Glam it up

Think you can’t get this outrageously glittery, big-haired style and still be environmentally conscious? Oh, girl. Think again.

At this point, Zoya has any color and finish you can imagine in their extensive nail polish line, which is all-natural and free of toxins. We adore their “Maura” as a classic late-seventies red-orange and “Ava” for a pearly, frothy pink.

If you haven’t checked out Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics, you’ll be stunned with their incredible glitter-laden line, which is 100 percent vegan, cruelty-free and fabulous! Their matching Lip Tar & Nail Lacquer sets are oh, so ’70s (and the hemp oil will make your lips SO happy): Try the “Kava Kava” for a sparkly pale peach or the “Anime” for a deliciously candy-inspired pink.

If you don’t already own hot rollers, your going to need them to get Sydney’s nouveau-Veronica Lake waves. Nab some of Aveda’s yummy smelling “Damage Control” to protect your tresses from the heat and some cruelty-free Paul Mitchell “Hold Me Tight” hairspray to keep you camera-ready into the wee hours.

Tie the whole look together and sparkle head to toe with Urban Decay’s vegan “Naked Illuminated” Face and Body Powder.

Be an Icon

Much like Ursula Andress’ bikini scene in “Dr. No”, Amy Adams’ emergence in a crocheted bathing suit will surely find a place in the collective consciousness. Think you’ve got the chutzpah to rock that look? Hurry! There’s a vintage one on Etsy!
