Your wedding day is all about you, and if that means you’ll be sharing your love of all things sustainable, then say “I do” to what (and who) you love!

Kristen Maxwell Cooper, executive editor of The Knot, shared invaluable tips with us on how to make your wedding day a little (okay, a lot) greener. Between the nuptial guru’s expert take on eco-friendly planning, our in-the-know deets on conscious ceremonies, and a bit of help from Martha Stewart, you’ll have a well-rounded guide to marrying your love for one other with your mutual love of the environment. The best part? You don’t have to sacrifice style for sustainability.

The Venue

When it comes to the location, Cooper recommends outdoor venues as the ideal choice. Not only will they provide plenty of natural light, but vineyards, botanical gardens, and hilltops will offer plenty of ambiance, too. Farms and refurbished barns are also options for your wedding day and usually come with conveniences like indoor plumbing, so you don’t have to forgo the usual comforts.

Cooper also understands that outdoor ceremonies and receptions don’t work for everyone, but does believe “there are several ways you can make it green.” Holding both reception and ceremony in one place means no extra travel, which translates to fewer vehicle emissions. Plus, you can always “look for hotels that recycle and use energy-efficient appliances and biodegradable products,” and have your wedding entirely indoors. Tip: bring in some candles for less energy consumption and more ambiance.

The Invites

Invitations are often the first impression that your guests will have of what’s to come on your wedding day. And if your love for the environment runs as deep as your love for your future spouse, then going the seeded paper route is one really cool (and green) option. The actual product is really beautiful, plus they send a great message — in more ways than one.

While Cooper does suggest “old school snail mail” for the wedding invites, The Knot says paperless save-the-dates are gaining in popularity. It also suggests directing guests to your wedding website for more details, reducing the need for excess inserts. And when in doubt, recommends choosing recycled paper invites that are printed with soy-based inks.

The Dress

Whether it’s your “something old” in vintage form, or you prefer your dress to be off-the-rack new, there are several designers catering to your eco-friendly wedding dress needs. From fabulous collections of hand-selected pre-loved gowns, to designers who consciously construct their creations from sustainable fabrics, recycled remnants, and use admirable manufacturing and zero waste production principles, there’s a dream dress out there for you yet.

The Rings

Don’t drop the ball when it comes to choosing rings. Ethical, sustainably sourced jewelry is also an important part of coming full-circle when planning an eco-friendly wedding. The destruction from gold mining, and the chaos caused by conflict diamonds in Africa should be enough to have you reconsidering popping down to your big box engagement ring superstore.

After lots of research, and an in-depth article, our four favorite conflict-free (and oftentimes charitable) engagement ring retailers are: Brilliant Earth, Fair Trade Jewellery Co., Do Amore, and Catbird Jewelry. And if none of these fit the bill, then vintage rings are the way to go!

The Food

Farm-to-table is the best way to cater your wedding, and making the menu completely vegan is even better! Don’t believe us? Then take it from the “good things” expert herself, Martha Stewart, who recently released an article on how to successfully throw a vegan wedding, even when guests are expecting meat.

First and foremost, it’s your day, so it should be your way! She also suggested choosing experienced caterers that know how to dress up veggies and bring out their flavors. Adding that familiar foods are always a good idea, the article suggested items similar to what  PETA staffer and World of Vegan founder Michelle Cehn had at her vegan wedding. A buffet of “bruschetta,  stuffed mushrooms, dairy-free pesto rotini, vegetable tian, roasted petite red potatoes, vegan quiche, and artisan bread and olive oil” kept her guests very happy.

Aside from veganizing your wedding cake, think about taking it down a tier or two. Towering cakes are often for show and most wedding parties don’t put more than a small dent in them. Choose an option that fits your headcount, or go with something that offers small bites and lots of variety, like a dessert bar. Plus, you can give out any leftovers or take them home with you.  

The Favors

Ditch the plastic thingamabobs and doodads for something your guests can either eat or cultivate. Cooper really likes the idea of giving “plantable favors like potted saplings, herbs or succulents,” but cautions, “if a lot of wedding guests are traveling, keep in mind that they probably won’t want to pack a pot of soil into their suitcase, so consider biodegradable seed packets if you’re committed to the plant route.”

For couples who love food, visit local small businesses to fulfill your favor needs. From gourmet coffee beans to gluten-free cupcakes, you can get as creative, or traditional, as you’d like. A more unique spin would be to make charitable donations in honor of your guests. Cooper recommends displaying “a sign letting guests know you’ve made a donation to a meaningful cause in lieu of favors, or pick a few favorites and let guests choose their favorite option.”

The Flowers

Your wedding checklist isn’t complete without flowers, but just because they come from the earth doesn’t mean they’re good for it. Pesticides and toxic chemicals are used on non-organic flowers, which is bad news for the environment and the people exposed to them. Not to mention, many of these flowers are actually shipped from other countries entirely. Buy organic whenever possible, and try this link to search chemical-free botanicals in your area.

Cooper’s team suggests talking to your local florist about in-season flowers, or choosing VeriFlora-certified flowers for those that aren’t in season. Aside from using potted blooms that can be taken home afterwards, it’s also been suggested that the couple use the same flowers at both the ceremony and the reception, then schedule to have a company like Rebloom or Repeat Roses pick them up and repurpose them. You can also call ahead and ask to donate the flowers to a hospital or nursing home.

The Registry

When it comes to wedding checklists, most events aren’t complete without a gift registry. With the power to choose sustainably and ethically made products, you can craft a registry that reflects your tastes. Whether that means you opt for tea towels made from organic cotton, or you direct guests to donate to the charity of your choosing, there are plenty of options to please everyone. DIY flower crowns you can make to adorn yourself with blossoms!

Spring and summer are the seasons of music festival and weddings, both at which it is completely acceptable to adorn yourself with flower crowns. Of course, we think it is pretty much okay to rock a floral crown any time of year you feel so inspired to do so.

To get the floral crown look, you could purchase a fresh version from a floral designer (at great expense to your bank account), buy a dried/faux version online from someplace like Etsy, or make your own from fresh, dried or faux flowers. Making your own is probably the most economical choice, as well as being the more creative option as well.

Making flower crowns isn’t really as complicated as it may sound. First, you must make the decision whether you will use fresh flowers or not. For a wedding, you may desire the ephemeral beauty of fresh blooms, while if you want a floral crown to wear at the festival circuit,  a dried or faux flower crown might be the better choice. ColumnNBA star Udonis Haslem’s wedding announcement in the New York Times adds to the cultural conversation about reproductive choice.

In many ways, the New York Times story celebrating Udonis Haslem and Faith Rein’s wedding is pretty typical. Two kids with wildly different backgrounds meet in college. They start dating. Then, she gets pregnant. The circumstances of their courtship, reports The Times, weren’t so unusual (I mean aside from the whole NBA draft thing, of course):

“Their first challenge took place the following spring when she became pregnant. It was her junior and his senior year, and he had begun training for the N.B.A. draft. Despite the pregnancy, she was busy with track meets and helping him complete homework. The timing was bad. ‘I am not a huge fan of abortion, but we both had sports careers, plus we could not financially handle a baby,’ said Mr. Haslem, noting how he struggled with supporting Kedonis, the son he had in high school, who is now 14 and who lives with his mother.”

The decision the couple made to end the pregnancy, give the relationship time to mature and wait until they felt ready to start a family isn’t unusual. In fact, one-third of women in the US will have an abortion during their lifetimes.

What is unusual is how this story was reported. This chapter in this couple’s life was written as part of their story—something they supported each though, which contributed to their bond but did not define the relationship. The writer presents the abortion with the same perspective as the couple themselves say that they did: As a reasonable and sensible decision for that couple at that point in their lives.

It’s time for the media to start putting abortion in the context of normal rather then abnormal. That this story is told at all, that it is told in a wedding announcement and the way in which it is told is hugely, massively important to the cultural conversation around reproductive choice.

Unless we’re reading a story about a rape or incest survivor (a story in which readers can decide that the woman is a victim, which somehow justifies her decision to make a legal, medically safe choice for herself and terminate a pregnancy), it’s rare that we read about abortion as something that is part of life—which it is for many women and many couples.

The Times refers to the decision as one of many challenges the couple faced. And, as readers, all we know is that it’s one they faced together. And that’s all we need to know.

Though the couple’s choice to talk about the abortion in this article celebrating their relationship is in itself a political statement, the lack of  political commentary and the lack of apology is refreshing.

There’s a lot of power in the language we use to talk about reproductive choice—and a lot of power in what is left unsaid.

Even though you swore you’d never get married.

We’re all grownups here: “Ever After” is something that exists in fairy tales and romantic comedies starring Meg Ryan (who’s since been usurped by Rachel McAdams, who will probably be replaced by Selena Gomez, who, like, wasn’t even born by the time we had our first Hollywood-quality heartbreak).

Cynical, we are not. On the pulse, is more like it. According to the Pew Research Center, only 20 percent of adults ages 18 to 29 are married, in comparison to 60 percent in Mad Men days. We’re also getting married later: the median marrying age is 26.5 for women and 28.5 for men. Some of the cool kids aren’t even getting married at all. Our parents, meanwhile, are getting divorced in droves having called foul on the marriage thing twenty, thirty or forty years into it.

But still…with the proliferation of pretty-people-getting-married-in-pretty-places wedding websites out there – and accompanying Masters-esque wedding photography, devoid of ugly people with sourpuss faces in shameful taffeta – the internet does occasionally present compelling evidence that we should, indeed, consider the knot, if only for the wedding.

The biggest trend in weddings is rustic, woodsy and occasionally nutty.  

Rustic is in. The hottest trend in weddings is coordinating natural touches with an eco-friendly sensibility. From what we’ve seen across the web, that can mean anything from a crafty twig centerpiece to an un-harvested cotton boll boutonnière. We think traipsing into nuptial bliss like a wood nymph will not only give your wedding more character, it’ll save you money and score you some green cred.

Here are some ideas to get your sap flowing.

Note the artichoke bouquet. Whomever catches this one is a very lucky girl, unless it’s mashed into a squishy, cheesy dip.

These down-to-earth boutonnières (in dandelion and cotton boll) are quite literally plucked from the ground from which they came.

Now, for the reception. A woodsy wedding is characterized by a color palette that is cinnamon-toned with tints of fall. Raw cotton bolls and logs add a campfire spirit to the reception. Here’s a hint: consider firing up S’mores at your event, and you’re bound to live happily ever after.

The rosemary takes the cake, entwining your masterpiece in a fragrant halo that is almost edible…if only it weren’t so beautiful.

These visual masterpieces, one with pebble encrusted layers and the other with mushroom sprouting toppers, are like eye candy and food porn rolled into one. A naughty honeymoon is sure to follow.

Looking for an unusual wedding banquet? I may have found the answer for you- Marije Vogelzang and her food laboratory.

While contemplating the greater joys of food, I remembered hearing Marije Vogelzang speak at the annual PopTech conference last year. This amazing designer has created her own genre for food as art: Eating Design. After studying product design and worried about the wasteful use of materials, this Dutch designer turned to food. Viewing food as already perfectly designed by nature, she began focusing on creating unique and meaningful eating experiences.

Vogelzang’s edible art projects take on many forms, including installations, performance, and event catering. In every case, she explores cultural preconceptions of food, and attempts to change prior experiences or associations with what’s being eaten. At one catering venue for a large holiday dinner party, the designer took the tablecloth and hung the sides up instead of down, creating slits so diners were encompassed in this tent-like construction, transforming the relationship of the eaters to one another and to their food.

Color often becomes a prominent focus in Vogelzang’s work. In a project working with kids and their food perceptions, she arranged a series of healthy snacks according to color, and each color was associated with a feeling or meaning, such as red=energy or yellow=friends. Children then chose their snacks based on a desire for “happiness” or “energy” as opposed to the food itself, thereby removing their previous hesitancy or negativity toward healthy foods.
