Netflix is almost becoming too perfect. It’s one of the only places you can find original series that feature women of all shapes, sizes, and genders, and a selection of incredibly shows.

While Netflix was about 85 percent perfect before, it just gained five extra percentage points because it added a natural history series. “Our Planet”, an eight-part series, will stream in 2019.

The Hollywood Reporter reported that the streaming platform was partnering with “Planet Earth” creators and the World Wide Fund to make “Our Planet.” The Reporter states that Silverback Films’ Alastair Fothergill and Keith Scholey, who created BBC’s “Planet Earth,” “Frozen Planet,” and “Blue Planet,” will produce “Our Planet.” The WWF also will provide “Silverback access to its projects in protected areas around the globe.”

Now, we know it’s kind of a drag that you’re going to have to wait four long years before the show starts, but it’ll be worth the wait. The Reporter notes that the series will be “largest of its kind ever attempted.” The series runners will film in wilderness areas that have never been captured. “Our Planet” also will feature shots of the depths of the oceans, ice caps, deserts, and remote forests. In addition to awe-inspiring landmarks, the series also will film unique species, according to the Reporter:

“The show will introduce its viewers to the most precious species and places that must withstand the impact of humanity so generations to come can enjoy the bounties of the natural world.”

The series will use the latest 4K camera technology and also will feature a variety of “specially produced storytelling for multimedia platforms.”

According to Lisa Nishimura, vice president of original documentaries at Netflix, The “Planet” series have done well on the streaming platform. The company expects that viewers will respond positively to this new series, too.

Do you enjoy watching any other nature history series on Netflix? If so, which shows are your favorite?

The short answer is yes, Earth Hour makes a big difference.

When Earth Hour started in March of 2007 in Sydney, Australia, no one knew the phenomenon that it would become. And now just eight years later, what started in one city has spread to nearly 7,000 cities and towns worldwide. Today, nearly 2.2 million people globally turn their lights out in a sign of solidarity. Earth Hour represents the need for action on global climate change. The event makes a big difference and you can too.

The global movement, started by World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF), encourages individuals, businesses, and entire communities to turn their non-essential lights out for one hour, on March 28, 2015 at 8:30-9:30 pm local time.

    });

“Climate change is not just the issue of the hour, it’s the issue of our generation,” Sudhanshu Sarronwala, Chair, Board of Directors, Earth Hour Global said in a statement. “Earth Hour is the world’s most enduring people’s movement focused on climate. The lights may go out for one hour, but the actions of millions throughout the year will inspire the solutions required to change climate change.”

While Earth Hour is symbolic, the event is also about taking action beyond the hour. In the past, Earth Hour has helped launch meaningful projects including garnering the support to help pass a Senate law that protected a 3.4 million hectare marine sanctuary in Argentina and starting the Earth Hour protected forest in Uganda. It’s about getting involved in an event near you by going to the Earth Hour tracker.

WWF’s website has a crowd sourcing and crowd funding tool called Earth Hour Blue, which allows you to get involved in events worldwide by choosing a country and an interest. If your passion is protecting whales in the Arctic, get involved in WWF’s movement to protect America’s Arctic from oil and gas drilling or maybe you want to see 24/7 protection for tigers in Singapore or clean energy for communities in India. Whatever your interest, you can get involved and help fund projects.

“Earth Hour shows us what we can achieve together. From creating a forest in Uganda to lighting up entire villages with solar power in India and the Philippines, the power of the crowd to make change happen is phenomenal,” added Sarronwala. “With Earth Hour, every light switch turned off is hope for climate action turned on.”

No matter what change you want to see environmentally, Earth Hour is an all encompassing tool to get things done. It’s about mobilizing efforts and then catapulting that energy into real change. Wanna watch Earth Hour live? You can watch the event unfold across 24 different time zones.

If you’ve never participated before, this is the year to get involved in Earth Hour 2015.

Lily Cole is showing that wearing sneakers can not only be stylish but good for the environment, too. The English model has partnered with the French eco brand Veja to release a new line of sneakers made with fair trade work and without destroying the rainforest.

The sneakers come in three different styles, feature Amazon inspired designs, and are made with wild Amazon rubber. The Brazilian rainforest is the only place on the planet where rubber trees grow in the wild. Their sap is known as “liquid latex” and can be extracted by tapping the tree instead of cutting them down.

“The survival of the rainforest depends on managing its resources,” explained Cole of her shoe line, which uses that tapped sap to make its soles. “With all eyes of Brazil this summer, my collection not only taps into the SS14 flat shoe trend, but also shows how wild Amazonian rubber can be used to make desirable products for people’s everyday lives.”

The tree tappers are paid fairly so it is in their interest to keep the trees standing. This is part of the Sky Rainforest Rescue, a partnership with WWF, to protect one billion trees in Brazil. Cole is an ambassador for Sky and visited the Amazon rainforest in 2012.

“During my trip to the Amazon, I saw firsthand the crucial part that Sky Rainforest Rescue plays in creating demand for wild Amazonian rubber for companies like Veja, and making the rainforest worth more standing,” she said.

The limited edition sneakers will be sold online and at English retailers Selfridges, in London and Manchester, and Topshop, on Oxford Street. Prices range between £55 and £65 and £10 of every pair sold will be donated to the Amazon tappers, equipping them with six more taps and allowing them to keep those trees standing. – Natalia Galbetti
