[...] The two living statues above are from the Lost Gardens of Heligan near St Austell in Cornwall. In a real-life version of Sleeping Beauty, these gardens fell into disuse during the First World War. They became entirely overgrown and forgotten until someone discovered a tiny room buried under masonry in the early 1990s and the restoration began. The gardens are vast - there are walled flower gardens and kitchen vegetable gardens, a New Zealand forest filled with tree ferns, flower-filled meadows and even a jungle in a gully where the micro-climate is genuinely sub-tropical. I wrote more about the gardens and the nearby Eden Project in a post on Cornwall for EcoSalon. [...]

Very evocative article for me, this one. Thanks, Caitlin! I love Cornwall and know it well. One family holiday we stayed in a cottage on the Lizard peninsula, and there's plenty to explore. But for me, the biggest attraction is that Cornwall is the gateway to the Scilly Islands (http://www.simplyscilly.co.uk/), 28 miles off Land's End, and so tropical that palm trees grow there (yes, really, in the UK).

I agree with Deco, that picture looks very much like Hawaii! And as for Cornwall, I love the picture of that earth sculpture, of the sleeping person. Great idea, maybe one day I'll build one on my land (when I get it!)
