I would consider something of your description unwearable. If something is at the point where it will sit and be wasted then it's time to 'upcycle'. All I'd like is that people consider what they're cutting up. Don't destroy what may be someone elses treasure as it is just because an opportunity to make something and sell it is there.

I wonder if there is limit to how far a label can get with upcycling as a method. How about this case, for example? The renowned Swiss company FREITAG started out by making great messenger bags from used truck tarps. In recent years the company has grown so large that it has (apparently) started its own factory for the tarp production. So the customers can still feel urban and eco-happy, the tarps are used on trucks for a few months before they are "upcycled" and made into bags. However, the tarps would actually be sturdy enough to be easily used for several years. Upcycling gone wrong?

'Wearable' is relative... an ugly thrift store prom dress from the '80s might still be wearable to someone out there. I think if the original item is secondhand, especially if it's out of style or damaged, it's fair game

Totally agree with not putting too much value in 'trash to treasure', at least when we're talking about actual trash. While upcycling is awesome, and it's nice to see people finding a use for stuff that would otherwise be in the landfill, making more attractive/non-gimmicky eco fashion should be a priority if it's ever gonna go anywhere.

Thanks, everyone for your input and feedback. This is something that I have been wanting to bring out into the open for some time now. Obviously, part of an ongoing dialogue with varying opinions. I think that the important thing for me is the need to push for high standards, with everything that we do, as the naysayers are watching, whether in fashion, design, health, or matters of global warming for that matter, Best wishes, A.
