Can I suggest if anyone misses the addition of pork, bacon etc. in a recipe such as this one - you can use a vegan product called "Liquid Smoke" (often found near BBQ sauces in USA grocery stores). This is just condensed smokey flavored water - no meat at all. It comes in different wood flavors - hickory substitutes quite well for the taste of bacon. Add it at the END of cooking to not cook off the flavor too much. 1-2 T in a pot of soup etc. is usually plenty. Perfect in split pea soup or any of the "old fashioned" recipes that added flavor that way.
