As consumers trying to lessen our ecological footprints, we all have to make informed choices about what we can and can't do: In our everyday, and for special events. There is no one recipe for sustainability.

I agree with Amy in that local manufacturers need our custom. If you only buy from mass-producers you diminish the variety of quality goods available. The less competition the mass-producers have, the more power they have to do whatever they like in the marketplace.

However, if there is no way that you can afford locally made eco-designer clothes, and a thrift store pair will not cut the mustard, and the W.mart jeans are the only ones that come close to being an eco-friendly option- then do that. But value them, and take care of them, make them last. AND, when you are in W.mart try and find out where they were made: are they ethically made? how far did they travel to get to you? What is the quality like? If you don't get any answers: write to the marketing department for answers. If they send you a bunch of "Ëœgreenwash': blog it, make it known.

With large companies such as W.Mart there is huge potential for mainstreaming new technologies that have less of an ecological impact, and help to foster more sustainable communities. From looking at their sustainability report, I'm not convinced that they are on that road yet: social responsibility isn't just about throwing money at charities whilst you steam-roll local design industries. If they want to be valued in sustainable communities then they need help to evolve, and they need consumers to keep them honest.

True, more people can afford to buy from Wal-Mart as we have thousands of them in the U.S. offering Americans the lowest prices possible for anything from a gallon of milk (but oh the poor farmer that had to accept such a low profit) to organic jeans (thanks to China mass producing them and taking away a lot of American jobs).

I agree with you that it's wonderful to have a healthier lifestyle for our families but at what cost? Lots of other ways than putting organic denim on their legs.

How long will we outsource our work and put solid American businesses at risk whenever a new Wal-Mart moves into town?

Are you a business owner?

And when your Wal-Mart jeans quickly fall apart for lack of quality and you have to buy more, they will add up to that one pair you could've bought at the small boutique run by your neighbor far from Rodeo.

Me? I'll be the one hosting a sale next week for my 6 designer friends, creative women whose merchandise was just refused from the boutique owner that couldn't afford to follow through on their contract.
Nobody wants to shop there when things are so cheap at Wal-Mart.

A sad state of things and one that will force us all at some point to closely look at what we have done to our communities and how far we've distanced ourselves from supporting local.

It seems that the attitude of some of the "Greenies" out there is that unless you spend a lot of money, your "green" purchase isn't as important or "green" as those who spend big bucks. I APPLAUD Wal-Mart and KMart for taking the initiative and bringing a healthier, more environmentally-friendly product to the masses. And let's face it, more folks can afford to shop Wal-Mart or KMart than can afford the pricier, designer stores those LA jeans are coming out of! I think there will be a bigger environmental impact by more people purchasing at the less-expensive Wal-Mart than the elite few who have the luxury of shopping a Rodeo Boulevard "green" boutique. I think that everyone wants a healthier lifestyle for their families, but not everyone can afford it. Instead of snubbing their nose at someone's less-chic Wal-Mart purchase, we should be thankful that those who may be less-fortunate can finally clothe their children in a non-toxic and environmentally-conscience way. It brings to mind the old axiom: Live simply that others may simply live - you don't necessarily have to spend an arm, a leg, and a rib to do so. I think I'm going shopping at WallyWorld this weekend!

I agree with rooting for the underdog but I am one of those women who frequent Wal-Mart. Unfortunately in Midland, MI we don't have a large supply of eco-friendly products. I like to think I do my part and actively search out organic and earth friendly products in every store I enter. Yes, I could order online or through a catalog but after you factor in shipping and handling, and the fact that I can't try on the product first, I think being able to purchase these jeans closer to home is fabulous!

I might go check these out only for the sake that organic cotton clothing at other locations (if you can find them locally) are too much for my budget. Maybe at least these might be affordable.
