The filter is a nice addition when away from unfiltered tap water but I don't want my water in plastic. I use a completely stainless steel bottle (including the inside of the cap) for water and an insulated stainless steel bottle (including the inside of the cap) bottle when I get my morning coffee. Both are from KleanKanteen.com in California. Remember to order the stainless steel cap as it is no longer the default due to the price increase in the material.

Also, the best, albeit expensive, home water filter I've seen is the OvoPur at www.AquaOvo.com. Even the extensive filter is glass. I'll be buying one soon to filter my New York City water which I find too chlorinated these days and I worry about the pharmaceuticals which their filter addresses to some degree.

@Caitlin - You just reminded me of when I used to visit my friend's then-fiance's parents' house in rural Louisiana. It turns out that their house was too far from their town to feed into that water supply so they ended up hooked into the neighboring town which was Kentwood, known for it's spring water and bottling company. They had the best tap water ever. In fact, it tasted better than what I got delivered to my house in the big blue bottles at the time. ;)

@Carla I hear you! I've never had a permanent water filter either, because I've always rented. I used to use water jug filters but I don't know how good they really are.

@Catlin - I will invest in a good filter once I have a more permanent place. I'm in Portland and the water is pretty good, but it still has more crap than what I'm comfortable putting in my body unfiltered. Call me paranoid. :)

@Carla It really depends where you live and in many places the tap water is indeed clean and safe. You can have it tested if you are concerned, or invest in a filter for home use.

Though I usually drink tap water, I know its not that safe (even when it tastes good). I usually fill up gallon jugs of filtered water at the store since I tend to drink about a gallon a day. I would love to have something where I can filter my water when I'm out and about and the mercy of what's out there.

I love my sodastream. It has saved me so much money over the last year on soda. I was shocked the other day when I saw that 12-packs now go 3 for $12 on sale! I can remember when they were 2 for $5 only a few years ago. I had no idea how much soda had increased in cost and quite frankly, I couldn't have kept drinking it, even though I have reduced the amount of caffeine I drink, at that increased price.

I originally bought my sodastream because I felt guilty about how many cans and plastic bottles I was taking to the recycling center every month. As a programmer, I always try to think of ways to reuse code and that spills into my regular life too. It seemed to me that there should be a way to have one or two containers to keep reusing and refilling with the soda and that's how I found sodastream. (I also make my own soymilk and soy yogurt.)

I was just in NYC and refilling my water bottle wherever I could just to stay hydrated and wished I'd had a little filtration for some of my sources.

Will totally get one of these. Thanks Caitlin for the heads up!
