Fantastic article! This is precisely inline with what I’m trying to say with my One Dress Protest. I’m wearing one dress (the U.P LBD) for one year (sans accessories) in protest of fast fashion, among other things.

I can’t wait to share this article as I had thought of the math breakdown you present (in less precise terms), but never actually done it with numbers. Great to see that in print.

Ah-ha! I have been talking about this recently too – the real cost of your clothes when you actually divide them by how long they last. It’s a very valid point when you talk about affordability. I guess the problem is, many don’t have $150 to shell out on a frock up front. But then again, that’s what saving is for!

I have clothing that’s over 50 years old, and I wear it. I own and treasure a Civil War era cape (trimmed in jet beads and monkey fur), a number of WWII era frocks, and many items from the 1950s and 1960s. I started wearing vintage in the 1970s, when appalling fashions in polyester came into vogue. I’d rather own one silk dress than an entire wardrobe in poly.

I didn’t realize it had a name, but this is what I’ve been trying to do lately. I cut my wardrobe back to what I consider ‘essentials’ and realized that nearly all of it was older pieces that I spent more money on. I’m not big on keeping up with the latest fashions anyway, so giving up those less expensive ‘disposable’ pieces is not a big deal. Saving up for well-made pieces does make me more thoughtful about what I’m buying, though it can be excruciating sometimes to wait!

Love this, Kelly! I would say about a third of my wardrobe is 5+. About 20% is eco. I do buy some high end traditional designers from time to time, but at least these pieces will last – mostly shoes, in my case. And I’m an ebay “like new” fanatic.

This is so important. Growing and transporting clothing takes a huge toll on the environment.

And if we are thinking about sustainability, we should think about how fast fashion affects the workers who make our clothes: low wages, unsafe working conditions, being overworked, etc.
