I noticed in one a young girl says “I gave my pen to Nathan in Math class” or something along those lines. Subtle… but makes the girl sound like an idiot for not realizing math class – you’d use a pencil. And she’s clearly not paying attention, because, you know, math is hard.

I hate advertising.

What about the teachers?

Teachers need to reject these ads too. Every single teacher I know, including myself, purchases things with their own money for their classroom.

I vowed to myself this year that I wasn’t going to set foot in a “back to school” department until I’m actually back to school (next week)

I’m making an exception for the Staples Teacher Appreciation event because they give out free stuff. And I love free.

Gotta disagree about the cell phone assessment. I always buy the cheapest Kyocera phone available from Virgin, and they are always “tanks” that give me years of service. My prior one lasted me six years and I used it “until the wheels fell off”; current one is a flip phone that cost me $15 on clearance from That Annoying Bashable Huge Store Chain That Starts With A “W”. I bought a second one just to get the extra charger (and as a backup for my car’s glove compartment). Buying a charger separately would have been $30. I do not feel guilt.

It’s kinda stressful for kids to enjoy the rest of the holidays when listening or watching to those ads. We as parents, feel stressed out too. Sigh…

Right on, Luanne! Completely agree, no need to get everyone hyper-excited about buying plastic junk when all you really need are a few new pencils. Sheesh…talk about “educating” for consumer culture.

Amen on all counts. I can’t stand it either. It’s feeding the culture of excess. I don’t like it when it’s still fishing/camping season for me, yet I see Christmas items already appearing on the shelf.
