thank you for bringing these serious concerns to light. i'm very saddened this is not a more popular post here, with floods of comments. women should be very concerned about this issue.
this, to me, is THE most important topic in the world right now: women. unfortunately, there is a long and sad history of abuse and oppression toward women in this world. women have been oppressed because they have been viewed as physically weaker, unable to fend for themselves, and therefore also labeled emotionally/mentally weaker as well. we have been made to feel men rule the world, so we must make ourselves valuable and pleasing to men in order to have a place. it's high time women begin to "fight" for ourselves. not violently, but use our collective mental strength and genius to formulate news ways we can shake and shift the paradigm of this male-focused world we live in. it's a long and hard battle, but we can begin where we are. refuse to support ideas that say women can't and shouldn't...refuse to blame women, or support people who do. refuse to treat women with different standards than men. refuse to raise your daughters with the belief that they somehow should act a certain way or do certain things just because they're a woman. a small example: in our recent women's book club, we had a great discussion on how in our society, women are expected to smile more often and be more "pleasing" to men than men are expected to be toward women. women are expected to be "nice" while men can get away with going all day without showing any sort of friendly or warm emotions. women in media are expected to smile far, far more often than men. why? are women happier than men? no. why must they be expected to smile all the time as if they're perpetually happy creatures, while men are pardoned from smiling and expressing friendliness? this societal belief that smiling women are more "pleasing" to men is a small form of sexism that we can fight where we are. refuse to try to make women feel as if they must be "pleasing" at all times. refuse to try to make women feel they must always smile, while men do not have to smile. men can be brooding and solemn and serious, but women even in serious topics must still look "pleasant." it is playing into that belief that women must be pleasing to men to have a place in this male dominated world. this perpetuates all the sexual angles that women are expected to play as well. women must dress "sexy" to be accepted and be "pleasing" to men. take dancing with the stars, for instance. women on that show dance half-naked, while their male partners very rarely wear anything but full-coverage pants and shirts. women are expected to look "sexy" all the time in order to please men. that somehow is where we get our "value" as women. not on our talents or abilities or intelligence, but on our sexual appeal to men. we are trained to look and appear "pleasing" to men, since we are trained to believe men rule the world and in order to have a place here we must cater to men.

yes, these are both very small examples in the context of all going on, but i believe big changes can often start with small overhauls of seixst beliefs and actions.
let's we women band together to prevent sexism from ruling our land. it starts with one. begin to ask how you can change the way you act, speak, and dress wherever you are to begin to change the sexist world in which we live.
