ColumnBertjan Pot’s masks have us wondering if we should scream or squeal with glee.

Thanks to the torrent that is the internet, the lines between art, design, and craft can sometimes blur into a whirlwind of images. The heARTbeat column aims to quicken your pulse a bit,  perhaps get you to pause, to feel or to think about new ideas. That is exactly the impulse Dutch designer Bertjan Pot has had on us this week.

In 2010, Pot was experimenting with new materials and stumbled across a seemingly endless source of inspiration. “I wanted to find out if by stitching a rope together I could make a large flat carpet. Instead of flat, the samples got curvy.”

Thus, his muse was born: the mask.

“The possibilities are endless,” he says. “I’m meeting new faces every day.”

With every turn of the rope he continues to create unique characters. And for every one you’d never want to meet in person, there is another to slip into just for fun.
