Mat and Danielle, the Canadian Couple behind Exploring Alternatives, converted a van after Mat was in an auto accident. The accident made the couple rethink how they lived their lives. Their main change was to live simply.
British rocker and outspoken animal activist Morrissey criticized Canadian Fisheries Minister Gail Shea for not calling a halt to the Canadian seal hunt.

In a post titled “This Sorrowful Canada,” which he published on the fan site True-To-You, Morrissey condemned the practice of the seal hunt, and was very critical of Shea for failing to put a stop to the nation’s annual seal slaughter.

“The annual East Coast seal hunt/kill started Monday – against a strong wave of trade and court challenges. Europe continues its ban on seal products,” wrote Morrissey. “The seal hunt in Canada is struggling to make a start this year due to almost no markets, and China especially is refusing to sell Canadian seal meat. Thank you, China!”

The singer said that “Gail Shea, the federal Fisheries Minister for Canada, says that baby seals are ‘killed humanely’, and explains how the baby seals are shot by high-powered rifles.” Morrissey questions whether the fisheries minister would still think that being shot is ‘humane’ if someone fired a rifle at her. “Is this a death that Gail Shea would wish for herself? Would it make her happy to be shot by a high-powered rifle?”

“If she considers such butchery to be so ‘humane’, why doesn’t she place herself amongst the tens of thousands of grey-coated harp seals that will be slaughtered within the next few weeks? She could then test the humane aspect of having her head blown off for herself. Only then could she be thought to speak with any authority on the subject,” he protests.

Although Morrissey opposes the seal hunt, and thinks that the Canadian government has absolutely no respect or compassion for animals, he does like most of the people that live in the country and does not consider them all bad. He does, however, think that Canada is giving itself a very bad image by continuing the hunt, and that people are not forming a strong enough opposition against the yearly slaughter of seals.

“Canada is a beautiful country, and the people of Canada are good people. But good people are often ineffectual. Internationally, Canada’s sorry image is due entirely to its seal slaughter – which is greedy and barbaric, and it is dismaying to witness such ignorance in 2014,” he wrote.

In 2006, Morrissey wrote another post on the same site explaining that he refused to tour and perform in Canada in protest of the barbaric slaughter of over 325,000 baby seals. He also criticized Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s reasoning that the slaughter is necessary because it provides jobs for local communities. “Construction of German gas chambers also provided work for someone — this is not a moral or sound reason for allowing suffering,” wrote Morrisey. Canada “placed itself alongside China as the cruelest and most self-serving nation,” he added.

“Sound reason tells us that only those of the thinnest intellect wear animal fur, and because the Canadian government are concerned with animals only economically, killing baby seals with lightning brutality is now Canada’s primary global image. Until this annual massacre is abolished, Canada itself is regrettably fashionably dead,” Morrissey concluded in his recent post. – Joan Reddy

Got a hankering to see the continent, but short on time/funds/without wheels? Travel by train is a lower-impact, relaxed, and budget-conscious way to go, especially in Canada.

Serious travelers have likely logged time on the rails, be it sleek, high-speed European or Japanese trains, or the clapped-out versions found throughout parts of Latin America and Southeast Asia. Here in the states, unfortunately, long-distance rail travel can be time inefficient and pricey.

In general, however, train travel is a greener way to go. Recent freak accidents in Spain and Quebec notwithstanding, trains are statistically much safer and less expensive than driving (when you factor in gas and depreciation), and far more efficient if you’re not in a hurry. After all, you can nap, read, or work.

Personally, I just like to zone out and stare out the window, taking in the scenery. Having traveled by train on four continents, I’ve experienced the good, the bad, and the seriously fetid. So it’s with good authority that I say VIA Rail Canada—the country’s national passenger rail system—rocks. Another eco-plus: Vancouver’s Pacific Central Station is just a 20-minute ride from the Vancouver National Airport on the efficient Canada Line rapid transit system.

VIA recently underwent a $22 million dollar renovation and eco-consciousness is notably a part of their promotional campaign (Canadians are impressively on the ball when it comes to green practices and ethics). Perhaps being an enormous country with a low population, fragile ecosystem, and massive foodshed is a good thing?

The VIA website addresses environmental issues and cites statistics, such as this: “Last year, 4 million VIA rail passengers traveled more than 851 million miles (1.37 billion kilometers)? Despite all these trips, they produced only 0.03% of greenhouse gas (GHG) related to transportation, while motorists alone have produced 13% of GHG emissions.”

This isn’t to say that you should believe everything you read, but the fact that travel by train is environmentally cleaner than plane, car, or cruise ship is nothing new. I’ve always loved taking the train, so for me, VIA’s makeover was an excuse to go to British Columbia for a week, and travel two of the province’s most famous routes.

The Canadian line runs from Vancouver to Toronto, but I chose to travel from Vancouver to Jasper (which is actually just over the border in Alberta), home of the largest national park in the Canadian Rockies. Because the Canadian travels trans-provinces, it offers both Economy (which includes a sleeping berth) and Sleeper Plus class, which includes full-service dining, and by far the sweetest room I’ve ever seen on a train.

VIA isn’t the Orient Express, so don’t expect bells and whistles, but the cushy chairs fold down into a full bed with a duvet, and there’s a private bathroom; showers are shared. There were even functional electrical outlets (are you listening, Amtrak?), but Wi-Fi capability depends upon route; in the heart of the Canadian Rockies, forget about phone and internet…which I gladly did. In fact, I was so cozy in my room, I had to force myself out and into the glass-ceiled and -sided Dome and Panorama cars (access may depend upon route and travel class).

During daylight hours, if you’re lucky, you’ll have an engineer who slows the train for photo ops of stunning visuals, like the towering Pyramid Falls, visible only from the tracks en route to Jasper.

The 20-hour overnight journey offers distinctly beautiful scenery. There are jagged peaks, meadows of wildflowers, farmland dotted with bales of hay, and usually, loads of wildlife (I seemed to be napping or peeing every time someone saw a moose, Grizzly bear, or bald eagle, but they’re out there, I promise- there were plenty of animals in Jasper). You’ll see crystalline glacial lakes, and cruise alongside the milky jade waters of the Fraser River.

In Jasper, I boarded the famed Jasper-Prince Rupert line, formerly known as “The Skeena” because it follows the dramatic river of the same name. This two-day, 720-miles run heads west, going from the Rockies to the rugged Pacific Coast. There are no sleeper cars on this route; instead, the train stops overnight in the sleepy city of Prince George (recommendation: the stylish Sandman Signature Hotel).

While the first day has attractive, pastoral scenery, the second day is money. From the jagged, glacier-swathed peaks of the Coast Mountains to the misty sandbars of the swift, wide Skeena, it’s Canadian wilderness at its best.

Prince Rupert itself is a delightfully quirky little port, and a great place to kick it for a couple of days. The highlights of the region (besides the views of the Alaskan Coastal Range, just 40 tantalizing miles away) are the stellar humpback whale watching and grizzly viewing. I took a six-hour round-trip boat ride up the Northern Inside Passage with the excellent, family-owned Prince Rupert Adventure Tours.

We watched humpbacks “lunge-feeding” just yards away from the boat, spotted porpoises and harbour seals, and watched bald eagles snatching fish scraps out of mid-air. The highlight of the week, however, was seeing grizzly bears in the Khutzeymateen Valley.

Although completely wild, the bears live in a protected region known as a “sanctuary,” how close to shore the boats can get to the animals, which spend summers foraging onshore for dandelions, grass, and clams, depends upon their mood. Many of the passengers on the boat were the same folks I’d spent the last two days riding the rails with. It had been a running joke amongst us that we’d ask for a refund if we didn’t see any whales or bears on our trip. It turns out that traveling to the edge of the continent is worth every cent.

ColumnDeep in the woods of Quebec, the realities of sirop d’érable.

A year ago I came home to a package outside of my apartment door. In it was a can of maple syrup, marked in both English and French, indicating its bilingual Canadian roots. “This is liquid gold,” read the card from my friend Amy. On the phone later I was told not to mention the fact that she had sent me a valuable can from the family stash, “don’t tell my husband.”

I felt like I was stashing a tin can of valuable drugs in my pantry. Not daring to waste the stuff, the beautifully decorated can remained un-opened. Loaded with such valeur, I was afraid to use it, and instead it became a nice daily reminder of Amy’s generosity and the fact that eventually, I was going to have to experience this maple syrup madness for myself.

    });

That time came last week, on a mother-daughter adventure to the northern woods of Maine and the farmland of Southeastern Quebec, in which I was assured I would get the ultimate “cabane à sucre” experience. Known as “sugar houses” or “sugar shacks” in English, these are cabins and buildings where sap collected from maple trees is boiled into maple syrup. Nowadays, not only do they produce maple syrup, but they have big dining halls which serve up a traditional menu, much of it made with or incorporating maple syrup.

“She’s a food writer,” Amy told her Quebecois family.

Her aunt and our host Jacqui turned to me, “Ah, tu es intéressée par la nourriture?”

“Oui,” I responded, glad that the question wasn’t more complex as no matter how good your French is, it’s never going to make Quebecois easy to understand.

When someone asks you if you’re interested in food and you say yes, you know what’s going to come next. Out come the family cookbooks, you’re inundated with “have you ever tasted [insert name of crazy local dish]?” and every meal from there on out is peppered with, “so, what do you think?”

Such was the case in Quebec, where I not only had a worn 1950s version of La Cuisine Canadienne sitting in front of me, but I was also busy scribbling down Jacqui’s recipe for Sugar Pie in my notebook. We hadn’t even tried the French Canadian classic dessert yet and here I was writing down the ingredients. Sugar, milk, butter, maple syrup… wait, there’s sugar and maple syrup in this? It appeared we couldn’t talk about one food without maple syrup somehow making its way into the mix.

According to the Federation of Quebec Maple Syrup Producers, Quebec alone accounts for 71% of the world’s maple syrup production, and visits to one of the numerous cabanes à sucre that dot the countryside is a must for any visitor.

We drove straight into the woods, not far from the house where we were staying, to find a large wooden building with a bright red roof. We were led through the machinery, and in a crazy blend of Quebecois and English I learned about the maple syrup making process. Collect the sap, boil it down, filter it out, package it up and then put it in and pour it over every single dish you can think of.

I exaggerate of course. Only slightly.

“Un oeuf dans le sirop d’érable?” I was asked as I made my way through the cafeteria style line inside the cabane à sucre‘s dining hall. I looked down at a huge pan of eggs boiled in maple syrup. Like a poached egg but on sugar-infused steroids.

“Euh, pourquoi pas?” Why not. When in Quebec…

And this policy was how I ended up with a plate covered with everything from the classic cabane à sucre menu: baked beans made in maple syrup, small sausages in maple syrup, an oven baked omelette, sweet pickles, and of course, les oreilles de crisse.

Les oreilles de what?

Jacqui had tried to explain them to me the night before, and I had established that it had something to do with fried pig that ended up looking like an ear. Hence the name “les oreilles de crisse,” loosely translated: Christ’s Ears. In other words, fried pork rinds.

Oh yeah, Christ’s Ears. Again, when in Quebec…

A plate of maple syrup doused food and two Christ’s Ears later (they’re like super crispy, salty bacon if you happen to be wondering) and I felt like the sugar shack was turning into sugar shock. But just when you think it’s over, out come the grand-pères, dough dumplings cooked in – wait for it – maple syrup.

My normally low sugar, gluten-free self was on system overload. I drank two cups of black coffee for the sake of revival.

“I might die,” said Amy. It wasn’t an overstatement. With that level of sugar coursing through your veins you feel like you could either pass out or go run a marathon, except for those Christ’s Ears whose salty flavor is still lingering. Solution? Take a short walk and eat more maple syrup.

We were greeted outside by a man pouring maple syrup onto a bed of snow in a trough-like structure.

“Maple syrup candy!” he exclaimed handing me a popsicle stick.

“Do it Brones,” Amy tempted me. My mother raised her eyebrows.

If there’s one thing I won’t do, it’s turn down a local food experience, and despite my body cursing my decision to eat an entire plate of syrupy meat products – file this one under times I sort of wish I was vegan – I could do nothing but put the popsicle stick at one end of the strip of maple syrup, now hardened by the cold snow, and twist it into a sort of a lollipop.

It reminded me of the Laura Ingalls Wilder books I grew up reading as a child, and their maple syrup taffy making sessions, but living in the Pacific Northwest, I never really had the luxury of heavy winter snow, or local maple syrup to pour on it. There’s always a first for everything, even if that first means you’re on the verge of passing out.

“Alors, c’était bien ta première fois à la cabane à sucre” asked Jacqui energetically. How this woman, with a tiny frame and good build and who had just eaten as much as I had still had the energy to happily ask me if my first trip to a cabane a sucre was a success was beyond me, but I forced a nod.

“Prépare-toi pour la tarte au sucre ce soir!” she exclaimed. (Translated: Prepare yourself for the sugar cake tonight!)

Oh no, the sugar cake.

And so the Quebecois stint ended, not with a last supper, but with a last sugar cake and me dreaming of kale smoothies.

And that can of maple syrup at home? I could of course do something crazy like turn it into cocktails or make a fancy maple fondue with cardamom, but I am afraid that it might just remain on the shelf. Just another tin can with a pretty picture and French writing. I think we’ll all be better off if it stays there.

Editor’s note: This is the latest installment of Anna Brones’s weekly column at EcoSalon, Foodie Underground, discovering what’s new in the underground food movement, from supper clubs to independent markets to the culinary avant garde.

At Free Spirit Spheres you can literally hang out in a Canadian forest.

How often do you stay in a handcrafted room? Not furniture wise, strictly speaking. But in an entire, spherical handcrafted structure (capsule, really) made from wood and fiberglass, which is then suspended from trees in a coastal rainforest on Vancouver Island? Never, you say. Well, it’s time to plan your next glamp-out in a circular porthole of your own.

Like something out of a surrealist Spanish movie, these convex structures look like giant eyeballs.

There are three Free Spirit Spheres: meet Melody, Eryn and Eve (whose details page is, naturally, called All About Eve). Well, they’d have to be female, offering such curvy, womb-like accommodation. Be warned: since they’re suspended, they do sway.

Designed with comfort and compactness in mind, rather than high style, each pod has a double bed and a small table for two. It’s a tight fit. Measuring three metres diameter, Eve (cedarwood) is on the cozy side, while Eryn (spruce) is slightly roomier, at 3.2m, with a second bed on a loft gallery, plus fridge and sink. Melody is the deluxe version, in yellow fiberglass with a walnut interior. She also features a drop-down bed.

Get back to nature when nature calls in the mushroom-shaped composting outhouse.

As if it needed mentioning, there’s no WIFI here, although there are speakers fitted for you to plug in your iPod: the very definition of surround sound. In a separate nearby building are bathrooms with showers, a sauna, and a barbeque deck.

Rates from $269 including tax, arrival snacks, and the gentle croaking of Pacific Tree Frogs.

North America’s beauty spreads from sea to shining sea.

When wanderlust strikes, there’s the tendency to picture oneself overseas. My personal fantasies bring me to deserts in Morocco, beaches in Goa, hole-in-the-wall salsa clubs in Havana. I tend to forget the bounty of natural beauty that exists right here in North America. These pictures showcase the stunning vistas, cultural relics, and breathtaking natural phenomena that exist right at our front doors, or at least within a few hours drive.

Travel journal: No matter where we live, we need nature.

Where are we without nature? This question has struck me over the last week, spending time in the Canadian Rockies, far from city life and away from the usual distractions that keep life busy. It’s cold. There are mountains all around. It’s easy to walk ten minutes and feel in the middle of nowhere.

In a recent conversation about the importance of taking advantage of the present, a friend said “you could get killed by a bear on your run today,” I stopped at the reality of that sentence. Yes, I could get killed by a bear. I wouldn’t put it past the Canadian wilderness. There’s a sense of grounding in that reality.

I love being an urban dweller. But with a childhood of living in a hand-built house in the forest, there’s a part of me that needs the solace that can only be found in quiet spaces. Trade out the usual high density lifestyle for a few moments in mountain air and you’re immediately transported to a different mind space.

Nature fuels creativity, as is clear spending time at the Banff Centre for Banff Mountain Film and Book Festival. Our brains need time to disconnect, to readjust to a more natural rhythm, one that begins with a sunrise over the peaks and an afternoon of alpenglow. One where the sound of a raging river is ever present. One where clean air is a given. One where you take in the natural world, not because you choose to go out on an afternoon hike, or take a weekend drive to the country.

As Andrew Weil wrote in an article in Newsweek, “Human beings evolved to thrive in natural environments and in bonded social groups. Few of us today can enjoy such a life and the emotional equilibrium it engenders, but our genetic predisposition for it has not changed.”

I think often of author Richard Louv and his aptly coined term Nature Deficit Disorder. He is right in saying that “The more high-tech we become, the more nature we need.” We need to find our balance, the balance that our bodies need and crave, and without, puts us on a path of modern physical and emotional pains. Stress and depression are all maladies of modern society.

Not that picking up your life, buying a cabin in the middle of the woods and settling down to write your memoir in a weathered leather journal by candlelight will solve all problems. Since we live in modern society, we must learn to function within its confines. To find a new balance, one that allows us to enjoy the amenities of urban life but that doesn’t keep us from forgetting how big of a force nature is in keeping us alive.

And not only alive, but fueled and inspired.

Clayoquot Wilderness Resort in Vancouver provides guests with luxurious “tented” accommodations and five-star dining.

Tucked in the middle of nowhere on the west coast of Vancouver Island is an eco-safari retreat called Clayoquot Wilderness Resort, which can only be reached by boat or seaplane. While the accommodations at this resort are comprised of 20 tents, each offers every bit of the luxury you are seeking. This remote Canadian getaway has dining tents that offer five-star cuisine, massage and treatment tents, lounge tents and guest tents with fluffy duvets and antiques, all inspired by late 19th century Great Camps.

But behind the luxury there is a deep and meaningful commitment to restoring the land. Located on the Clayoquot Sound Biosphere Reserve Area on the banks of the remote Bedwell River, Clayoquot Wilderness Resort is committed to running in an environmentally sustainable manner with as low-impact operations as technology allows.

We love that every evening the Activities Director meets with guests personally to design their adventures for the next day, which depends on weather, tidal charts and animal sightings. The resort offers tons of activities so guests will never have a shortage of things to do in the wilderness.

If you go: While Clayoquot Wilderness Resort is only open May through September and guests are encouraged to make reservations in advance. Rates start at $4,650.00USD for three nights, and include return airfare from Vancouver to the Resort, deluxe tented accommodation, all meals, snacks and beverages (including alcohol), massage treatments and a wide array of guided adventure activities including instruction.

Places & Spaces is a travel guide that will inspire you to carve out a vacation on your calendar. All of the gorgeous locations and accommodations in our guide share our concern for the environment. From tent glamping to lavish built environments, fair warning, you’ll feel compelled to pack your suitcase.
