Thanksgiving is on the way, and we all know what that means: it’s time to fend off overbearing relatives. This year, aside from the token, “When are you getting married?” and “Is working on the Internet really a job, dear?” questions, Thanksgiving is probably going to involve getting into full-blown arguments about the 45th President of the United States. To keep your cool (and keep from getting into a fistfight with your NRA-card-carrying cousins), why not try out some of these tasty fall cocktails? There might be at least one that everyone can agree on.

1. Batman

Recently added to the menu of JIMMY at The James in New York by mixologist Johnny Swet, this dark-hued drink actually contains quite a bit of bright flavor. Blackwell rum and activated charcoal form the earthy base, which is the perfect foil for lime, pineapple, and mint.

Ingredients

2 oz Blackwell Rum
¼ teaspoon Activated Charcoal
2 oz Pineapple Juice
.5 oz Lime Juice
.5 oz Agave
grilled pineapple chunks and mint

DIrections

Muddle a bar spoon of grilled pineapple chunks and mint in a tall glass. Combine the rum and activated charcoal, and shake and strain into the glass. Add crushed ice and swizzle, and garnish with pineapple and mint.

Image care of Facundo Nero

2. Star of Autumn

The Star of Autumn is a warming cocktail that pairs really well with Thanksgiving desserts like pumpkin pie. It features Facundo Neo rum, which offers a balanced blend of medium-to heavy-bodied rums aged up to eight years and filtered over activated carbon to remove any color. Combined with Applejack and maple syrup, this cocktail is a delicious salute to fall flavors.

Ingredients

1 ½ parts Facundo Neo rum
1 part Laird’s Applejack
¼ part Maple Syrup
¼ part lemon juice
Granny Smith apple, for garnish

Directions

Shake all of the ingredients with plenty of ice. Strain into a coupe glass. Garnish with a thin apple wedge or curled apple peel, and serve.

Image via @threadsalt

3. Chicken Soup Hot Toddy

We’ve never met a more intriguing drink than this chicken soup hot toddy. Swet’s creation, a blend of hot chicken stock, celery bitters, and gin, is the warming cold-weather drink we’ve been waiting all our lives for — and it might keep Grandma occupied long enough to keep her from saying racist things in front of your new boyfriend.

Ingredients

1 oz Nolet’s Gin
1 dash celery bitters
.25 lemon juice
4 oz hot chicken stock
1 carrot stick
1 celery stick
Parsley, to garnish

Directions

Pour into snifter. Garnish with carrot, celery stick, and parsley.

4. Spiced Mexican Hot Chocolate

This is the perfect drink to serve as a nightcap or after dinner drink. It’s warm and cozy, making everyone think of happier times, with white Christmases and a White House that didn’t seem so apocalyptically terrifying.

Ingredients

5 oz hot chocolate (homemade or from a mix)
1 oz Reposado El Tesoro Tequila
1 oz Ancho Reyes Chili Liquor
pinch of cinnamon
marshmallow

Directions

Add the tequila and chili liquor to a mug. Add the hot chocolate and stir. Garnish with a marshmallow dusted with cinnamon.

5. Seoul Man

This drink was inspired by Swet’s love of salty Korean food, but it also makes a great pre-dinner cocktail. It’s just spicy enough, and the combo of soju and vodka might get you drunk enough to be able to ignore your great uncle talking about ways to Make America Great Again.

Ingredients

ginger
1.5 oz soju
1.5 oz cucumber vodka
.5 sweet mirin
.25 oz lemon juice
2 bar spoons of gouchujang
chili salted cucumber, for garnish

Directions

Muddle the ginger in a glass. Shake the soju, cucumber vodka, mirin, and lemon juice with the gouchujang and ice. Strain into the glass and garnish with chili salted cucumber.

Shots, shots, shots! Take a swig of one of these immunity shots and rest assured, you’re doing your body an immense favor.

These recipes are potent elixirs that are as much of an affront to your senses as regular alcohol-based shots, only without the alcohol and the accompanying acidity. No matter the season, it is important to keep your immunity in check to thwart illness while also feeling and looking your best. An immunity shot is a quick and effective way to deluge your body with a two-ounce burst of anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, and antioxidant effects.

All of theese immunity shot recipes have something in common: they feature ginger. Ginger is a panacea when it comes to overall health and immunity. Ginger contains the bioactive compound gingerol, which is responsible for much of the spice’s medicinal properties. Ginger can help treat nausea and morning sickness, reduce muscle pain and soreness, improve joint health, lower blood sugar levels and cholesterol, prevent cancer, boost heart health, improve digestion, and fight infections.

The other accompanying ingredients in each recipe are meant to provide a good dose vitamin C, cleanse the cells of toxins, and fight inflammation, all important elements in boosting immunity.

While you could make the ginger juice while making these individual recipes, I like to make a weekly batch of ginger juice – a liter or so – and keep it ready for whenever I want to pour myself a quick shot. I also like to use the ginger juice for other things besides these shot recipes, such as in soups, smoothies, and even on its own for a quick pick-me-up.

3 Immunity Shot Recipes

1. Carrot Garlic Shot

Makes three 2-ounce shots

Ingredients

Directions

Run the garlic and ginger through the juicer, followed by the carrots. Squeeze the lemons separately. Add the lemon juice to the carrot mixture. Stir and serve!

2. Orange and Turmeric Shot with Manuka Honey

Makes two to three, 2-ounce shots

This recipe for a summer sangria takes regular sangria to the next level, with oranges, lemons, limes, cranberries, strawberries and blueberries!

2. Moonshine Kombucha Cocktail

You don’t need seltzer water to get that bubbly! A hipster’s dream come true, this Moonshine kombucha cocktail recipe introduces vodka to kombucha, lemon, lime, ginger and bitters for a decidedly festive and summer-apropos outcome.

Its incredibly easy to put together!

4. Grapefruit Gin Fizz

While this grapefruit gin fizz recipe was originally posted for Halloween, its components scream nothing other than summer itself, with grapefruit, honey and blackberry adding that sour and sweet dynamic your body craves!

5. Roasted Tomato Martini

Even a cocktail can satisfy you with your vegetable serving for the day (well, sorta). This roasted tomato martini recipe makes the best of summer tomatoes by satisfying your savory tooth and giving you a buzz while you’re at it.

6. Honey, Ginger Sparkling Lemonade

Step up your lemonade game with this honey, ginger sparkling lemonade recipe. Lemon, ginger and rosemary take a dip with your liquor of choice to create your next favorite summer cocktail of choice.

What are bitters? If you want to up the ante on your cocktail recipes, you need to know a thing or two about bitters.

Unless you’re a bartender or a cocktail aficionado, you’re probably aware that a lot of drinks have bitters in them, but you might be hard-pressed to say what they actually are. As an essential to the modern bar, to master your cocktail making skills it’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with bitters and what to do with them.

Here’s a quick guide to act as your introduction to the bitter world.

What are bitters?

Think of bitters as the spice of the cocktail world. They have a long history going back to the 1700s when they were developed by physicians and acted as medicinal tonics. A bitter is essentially a blend of either herbs, fruits, spices, or roots that are distilled in a strong liquor.

Angostura is probably the most common of the bitters, and even if you’re not steeped in the cocktail world you have probably already heard mention of it. Concocted in the river trading town of Angostura, Venezuela (now, Ciudad Bolívar), in the 1820s by a German doctor, Johann Gottlieb Benjamin Siegert, working for Simón Bolívar, Angostura bitters quickly became popular amongst sailors looking to ease sea sickness. Nowadays you’ll find Angostura bitters in a variety of drinks, like an Old Fashioned or a champagne cocktail.

Can you make bitters at home?

While there are plenty of brands out there making bitters, both big and small, you can also go truly artisan and start making them yourself. The basics are mixing spices with a high proof alcohol and then allowing enough time for them to all sit and steep together. You’re not really restricted to what you use, you can blend a variety of spices and herbs as you see fit; a fun opportunity to experiment and have a homemade addition to your cocktail recipes. Make your own bitters and your own simple syrups and you will truly have a DIY cocktail bar.

How do you use bitters?

Since we’re considering bitters the spice of the cocktail world, use them a little like you would salt and pepper. That’s to say, they are not intended for consumption on their own, but add a few drops to a drink and you can completely change the taste. Start with some classic aromatic bitters – like Angostura or Peychaud’s – and then branch out.

You can get into fruit bitters, like Bar Keep’s organic apple or grapefruit, and even spicy bitters, like Sriracha from Brooklyn Hemispherical Bitters. Or how about Thai Bitters from The Bitter End? If you’re feeling like you really wanting to commit to your new bitter habit, you can even invest in a Bitters Travel Pack so you can take your bitters with you. yes, they are in TSA-friendly sized bottles.

While the bitter options may seem overwhelming, keep in mind that having just one or two bitters on hand in your at-home bar can allow you to make a variety of cocktails.

Happy cocktail making.

Cocktail culture has a way of going in and out of style–just like with fashion. While bell-bottoms came back in style, and are again out of fashion (and really should stay there), the notion of retro or vintage cocktail recipes seems to be sticking around.

Movies and TV are one way that vintage cocktails come back into fashion. James Bond gave us the martini, which is based on a concoction from the late 1800s; “Sex in the City” gave us the Cosmopolitan, a drink that actually dates back to the 1930s; “The Big Lebowski” gave us the White Russian, which can be traced back to the 1960s; and most recently “Mad Men” has re-popularized the Manhattan, which history has it as being invented at the Manhattan Club in the 1800s.

It appears that with mixology, as with fashion, everything is derivative.

So, what are some vintage cocktails worthy of ordering up or serving at your New Year’s Eve party? Here are 4 retro cocktail recipes that have made a comeback for good reason–they are tasty!

The Manhattan

A traditional Manhattan is made with Rye (Canadian Whiskey, like Crown Royal), sweet vermouth, bitters and is often served with a maraschino cherry. For those who don’t know, sweet vermouth is nothing like the vermouth found in the martini and bitters is actually an alcohol flavored concoction made with herbs–think of it like vanilla extract for booze. It is served in a martini glass and bourbon and Tennessee whiskey can be substituted for the rye as well. One should experiment with the Manhattan to find the preferred preparation. For example, I prefer mine made with rye and extra bitters.

Old-Fashioned

The Old-Fashioned dates back to the 1800s and it is considered one of the classic cocktails. It is served in an low glass called an Old-fashioned glass, which was pretty much named for the drink. The Old-fashioned is made with whiskey or brandy which is added to muddled sugar (or simple syrup), bitters and served with a twist of citrus rind or a maraschino cherry. It is the drink of choice for Don Draper, and again, is one that should be experimented with to find the right combination of elements.

French 75

The French 75 is a Champagne cocktail and it is probably most remembered from the 1930s movie “Casablanca.” It is made with gin, lemon juice, simple syrup and Brut Champagne and is serve in either a Collins glass or a Champagne flute. It has a bite and might make a welcome addition to your next brunch instead of the more traditional Bellini or Mimosa.

Moscow Mule

The Moscow Mule is a tasty cocktail made from ginger beer (the more bitter, the better), vodka and lemon. It was first invented in the 1940s and became popular in the 1950s at the height of the Cold War. It is served “on the rocks”, or over ice, in a copper mug that keeps the drink ice cold. It is a refreshing and delightful variation on the Buck or Mule cocktails, which are all made by adding various liquors and citrus to ginger beer.

Herb-infused cocktail recipes are gaining in popularity, especially those that use savory herbs that most of us would associate with dinner dishes. Take sage for example: in this cocktail, sage leaves are paired with bitters and rye whiskey for a cocktail that screams of autumn.

Vinegary shrub cocktail recipes are super trendy, and they’re even better when made with obscure ingredients, particularly vegetables. Because everyone likes a drink which can be pawned off as moderately healthy. Beet juice? But of course.

There is a certain type that has a love affair with Fernet-Branca; most of the ones I know are bartenders. It’s aromatic and very herb heavy, so it’s not for the faint of heart. But mixed with a little rye whiskey and ginger syrup, you have a classic cocktail that most people will be hard pressed to turn down.

Rum is also making a comeback, and in this recipe it’s mixed with another hipster drink of choice: cold brew. That’s right, a creamy caffeinated cocktail. Make sure you’re not drinking it before bed.
