I remember Andrea Linett as Lucky Magazine’s last page caricature that I wanted to emulate – admittedly, as much as I yearned to be Jo, the motorcycle mechanic, feathered hair babe from Facts Of Life or Kim White of Kim White Handbag glory. Put all three of these women in the same room and you get the vibe I love most.

Let it be known these women of inspiration are far and few between so I was relieved to find the temporarily MIA Andrea Linett on her blog, I Want To Be Her! which she runs with longtime friend, coveted Martin designer and illustrator Anne Johnston Albert, who made the caricatures of her on the last page of Lucky every month.

With I Want To Be Her! The two capture fashion forward women on the streets of the city and dissect their outfits into the caricature cool images we love.

Now in charge of curating the over 20 million fashion listings that pop up daily on eBay, we hope to see the Linett touch resurface. And here’s what I love about eBay. What’s more green than clothes already made and swimming in the waste stream? eBay Fashion is not only filled with choice picks of indie and high end designer duds, there’s also vintage and deadstock that needs to move. But unlike a trip to a massive warehouse shopping experience like Marshalls or TJ Maxx – eBay Fashion makes it more boutiqey and easy to navigate.

I recently caught up Andrea to understand how eBay fashion will evolve and learn about some of her own favorite eBay purchases. Here’s what she had to say:

With all the amazing clothing, shoes and accessories on eBay, how to you even begin revamping items into more curated collections? The eBay fashion team has always done a fantastic job identifying trends and finding great pieces and presenting them to its audience in a really cohesive manner. We’ll just do a lot more of this by introducing even more editorials (like profiles of cool women, showing their shopping picks), and making shopping on eBay Fashion an even more fun and interactive experience. We also have Fashion Vault, which offers amazing deals on designer pieces, and exclusives like the Derek Lam + eBay crowd-sourced collection which we’re all really excited about.

Do you think people realize how cool eBay is for finding wardrobe fillers? Or do you think there’s a misconception that it’s just a lot of junk (and too much of it?). Maybe there’s an age group that uses it more than others?
The eBay fanatic knows that she can find everything she needs and wants here. Maybe she’s seen a red shirt in a magazine or on a cute girl at a party and she’s just got to have one. She can type “red shirt” in the search engine and literally thousands of options will come up. You can’t say that about any other shopping site! eBay is endless – there are new listings every day. That’s why it’s so addictive. eBay is so big that it’s hard to pin-point an age group. It’s like if you go to a huge mall, maybe there’s a core group of trendsetters hanging out who are young, but there is every age group walking around and shopping. I think there are just different searches for different ages.

I got the eBay Fashion app on my phone and just started exploring it but am already impressed by how organized everything is (and that I have so many pairs of Anthropologie boots in my “closet”). Do you think the app will make eBay even more addictive but to a new wave of eBay babes?
That eBay app is a lifesaver! I was always rushing to computers before to check on my watched lists. It will for sure keep people more engaged in the experience.

What are some other ways you see the site evolving?

We’re planning on introducing more aspirational imagery, including profiling chic women (right now there are mostly still lifes),  generating more fashion editorials, adding styling tips and just more of a voice in general.

What are some of your favorite sites?
Aside from eBay (seriously, the fact that I now work there is akin to a little girl getting a job at American Girl!), I love Asos, Forward by Revolve for its tightly curated stock, Need Supply (lots of good price points) and Ssense.

Have you always been a fan of shopping on eBay? Can you remember the first item you purchased on it? I can’t remember when I discovered eBay, but it was definitely years ago and the beginning of a long love affair. I have no idea what the first thing I bought was, but I have everything from an incredible old mine cut diamond ring and an Hermes watch to a discontinued Tiffany necklace and my all-time favorite oil painting of a horse.

Before Pendleton met Opening Ceremony and made heritage as seemingly cool as it is, mid-70s moms with feathered hair – including bombshell Farrah Fawcett – were becoming inspired by Navajo prints and ethnic designs. Seems like a reasonable trend for winter, right? I mean, I love the idea of hipsters parading around city streets trying to be cool with what people normally wear in the burbs. Add to that the men scruffy in teen wolf beards trying to look lumberjacky? It’s a look! (Side note: please go away teen wolf beard trend).

Back to Opening Ceremony and Pendleton.

Collaborations like theirs brought to light our love of all things culturally correct and yes, Navajo inspired like this little romper above – the newest birthing of season three’s wooley reunion of Pendleton and Opening Ceremony. $233

Sustainable label Mociun had their own southwestern moment when they produced these blanket jackets for fall 10 that screamed “I’m not your mother’s jacket!” On sale for $390 at Kaight.

Private Navajo? This Woolrich Navajo Indian Blanket Sweater is in great condition. Think slouchy cloche hat and chunky scarf to accompany the vibe.

Currently $10 on eBay! (Amy screams and rips her hair out at the price).

Tribal patterns and slouchy boyfriend style make this Navajo inspired sweater an amazing find. And it’s currently $16.50 on eBay! (More hair ripping)

Every once in awhile, a piece of clothing grabs me in its attractive talons and whisks me away to want land. Capes are very on trend so at least I don’t feel like a freak regressing back to my mother’s fashion heyday. I was seven when they were in so I never got to fully, how do you say, partake?

This holiday season, if I get any of these capes I will freak out (mostly this top one).

Capes come in many different shapes and sizes and maybe it’s the wide sleeves to accommodate chunky sweaters like this vegan number from Vaute Couture that has drawn me in.

Bees are on the wane, and we have no idea why. Entire populations are dying or disappearing as part of the baffling phenomenon known as Colony Collapse Disorder. Bad news in itself, but the sting in the tale is that without bees, many of our staple crops are doomed. While scientists search for the answers, the urban backyard remedy is obvious – and here’s how it works. Escalating food prices, and all that land out back? Put the two together and turning your place into an edible garden is a no-brainer. But even if you’re squeezed into a concreted corner or you’re halfway up a towerblock, there’s still room for some horticultural creativity. Agricultural skyscrapers are on the rise (as it were) but while city-planners develop a coherently green strategy, it’s all about self-expression. Snake some vines over your balcony or up the wall. Let your potted plants grab onto windows and railings. Make your city come alive!

Up Where The Air Is Green

But whatever is done in the vertical is being done tenfold in the horizontal. Green roofs have captured the urban imagination like no other eco-craze, and it’s not hard to see why: they’re beautiful, they have a deeply practical element, and…did we say how beautiful? Of course there are new architectural challenges that come with having tons of topsoil and greenery piled on your ceiling – and there’s the usual amount of half-hearted bandwaggoning. (Yes, Astroturf is cheating). But wouldn’t it be nice to have a little less of the “concrete”, a little more of the “jungle”? I bet the local wildlife would think so.

It’s been on the horizon for years (far too many of them) but now the electric car is starting to make headway in the place it’s best suited for – the urban grid. Where else is it practical to build recharging stations at the kind of density that suits the electric car’s shorter range? Ah, but that’s changing too – some of the models on our 2009 roundup hold enough juice to compare favorably to their gas-powered counterparts. These admirable advances aside, do you really need your own car? If not, and if braving the public transport isn’t an option, grab a lift with someone else – because urban carpooling is here to stay.

Commute Yourself Slim

In the convenience-drugged city of tomorrow, the only sweat you’ll break is when you’re deciding which button to push. Utopian dream? We say: urban nightmare. We spend our day in the thrall of convenience technology…and then heads straight to the nearest super-expensive gym to compensate. With modern life in full swing, who needs The Onion? Luckily there are architects who recognise the danger and, like Nintendo, are sneaking gyms into our lives without us realising. Their thinking is: why consume electricity when calories can be burnt instead? So the urban fabric gets a healthy makeover, like the much maligned stairwell. Cars are zoned out of existence and replaced with their human-powered counterparts (saving you cash in all sorts of ways). Parks and paths are expanded, and everywhere can be reached by a sidewalk. One for Me, One for You…

My mum has a logistics problem. Thanks to some absurdly prolific fruit trees, her freezer is permanently half-full with surplus she has to freeze or it goes to waste. What she needs is a local fruit exchange – a social network (online and offline) that collects and distributes surplus produce for the good of the neighborhood. Take San Francisco’s version, Neighborhood Fruit, working like a foodie’s version of Freecycle – the goods are there for free, you collect them yourself, and first come is first served. If you like free food (ie. if you have a pulse) or want to reclaim your freezer, find your local fruit exchange…and if there’s none at hand, why not start one (pdf)?

Serving the Needy (With Servings)

Gone are the days that it’s acceptable for shops to chuck unused food away at closing time (and having worked as a barista for a certain worldwide coffee chain, I’ve seen my fair share of that). While up to a third of household groceries still go into the trash, restaurants are acting rather more respectably by offering up their output to local charities and nonprofit organisations, or directly into the hands of the homeless on the street. It’s Cheaper Online (or, How We Killed The High Street)

Here’s a phrase to fill a shopkeeper with dread: “No, I won’t buy it here, I’ll get it on eBay / Amazon /Craigslist”. Online retailing is gargantuan business, simply because it’s usually the way to pick up the best goods from anywhere in the globe at the best price. Is it green? With minimal packaging and low overheads, you’t think so – except it’s also the quickest method of wiping out profits for urban retailers and for killing small traders. (Even the big ones aren’t safe – take the fate of Borders UK.) However, counter that with the fact that they’re billion-dollar recycling machines that often do a lot of good.

No matter your view, the bottom line is that online retailing is on the rise – and shopping is changing forever.

Neighbors are a Big Deal

But why spend money at all? Before money there was bartering, and thanks to the people-connecting power of the Internet, it’s firmly back in fashion (although we wouldn’t say “money is dead” – merely looking a bit peaky). If it fits through the post, it’s being swapped: books, DVDs, clothes, gadgets, plant seeds and tons more. Yet cities are where this is taking place in person, exchanging goods and services and reinforcing social bonds. Bartering binds people together.

And for the more intrepid barterer – why not trade homes with a complete stranger?

No, no….things ain’t what they used to be….oil wasted on the ocean and upon our seas…fish full of mercury…oh mercy, mercy me.

The loosely fitted, romantic looks coming down the Spring/Summer 2011 runways were reminiscent of the time that – almost forty years ago – ushered in a new era of soul music. It seems, like Marvin Gaye’s masterpiece, some old ideas are new again because they still resonate. As Motown’s main man asked, What’s Going On?

After a brief flirtation with the Mad Men and women of the 1950s, fashion’s role as a cultural mirror instead reflects the silhouettes and stylings of the 1970s. The parallels between then and now are obvious – concern for the environment, a challenging economy and an unpopular war. It seems the issues are all too sobering to lose us – for more than a Sunday evening – in the façade of full-skirted perfection.

Interestingly, eco-fashion first emerged during this time. As environmental journalist, Lucy Siegle writes, “If we were to do a ‘Who Do You Think You Are?’ of ethical fashion, we’d trace most of its DNA back to the 1970s eco movement; it’s a direct descendant. Back then eco style consisted of a lot of sack and tent-like shifts, woolly leggings and rugged tie-dyed fabrics that were hessian-and hemp-based.” Shapeless and crunchy ethical fashion – What a quaint idea! And some progress – for a change – to feel good about – Right On, Right On.

The era has a wealth of subtler details – forget the stereotypical disco party costume – to incorporate into your look without buying a thing. Layering a sleeveless sweater over a flouncy blouse and defining the waist with a belt is a simple, easy-to-emulate look. Another key is embracing maxi proportions. Choosing a long dress or coat this holiday season, is a guaranteed standout in a sea of short styles.

This revisit isn’t overly ornamental or garish. With a nod to the concurrent trend for sophisticated minimalism, it’s about simplifying the free-flowing silhouettes of the vintage looks. Swap crochet for lace, folksy embroidery for paisley prints, burnt orange earth tones for color-blocked tropical-hues.

These items are great to find by rummaging in your closet or your mom’s, or at thrift and vintage stores. For online, eBay searches under vintage for “Halston,” “Thea Porter,” “Biba“ will turn up some fabulous stuff. Eco designers such as Emily Factor, Azuela, Gretchen Jones and Rosel are doing fluid, 70s reminiscent pieces brilliantly to fill in the bits you can’t get from low impact sources.

Are you ready to hop aboard the soul train to 70s inspired fashions? Or does it feel like nothing more than the relentlessness of the fashion treadmill? Perhaps. But I like to think by engaging in the themes Marvin Gaye soulfully sung to – our awareness, engagement and consciousness – we’ll have a better chance this time around if we’re wearing the romantic, vivacious clothes of the era of great soul.

Shoes they come and shoes they go, but once in a while you want something that stands out.

There will always be the perfect black pump, the brown or black tall boot and the go-to flats with your very own toe impressions (they’re that go-to). But this fall women are ditching the usual suspects and perusing their favorite shoe hot spots for the shoe of the moment, the oxford.

Worn with pencil skirts, skinny jeans or flat front men’s trousers, this versatile shoe puts the Kate with the Hepburn and the Amelia with the Earhart.

Derived from the Scottish and Gaelic “brogues,” (or wingtips in the U.S.), oxford shoes have risen in rank this season from being a traditional men’s shoe to a stylish women’s power piece, heeled and ready for action. And this trend doesn’t seem to have an end in sight, with Spring 2010 models walking down the runways clad in them for Isaac Mizrahi, Rachel Comey, Phillip Lim and Derek Lam.

A trend that transcends more than one season? Yes!

After perusing my favorite shoe haunts at Etsy, I found what I wanted, and lots of it (see images above)…if only I were a size 7 instead of a 9! Are big-footed women a turn of the century phenomenon?

The only other oxfords I found that were somewhat sustainable are the Melissa oxford shoe, available in all colors of the rainbow. Melissa’s latest collaboration with famed Brazilian designer, Alexandre Herchcovitch, has produced these must-have classic rubber brogues that will keep heads turning and you skipping away in glee.

I love that when I Googled “trend, geode jewelry,” the first hit was the designer Jacquie Aiche. That sealed geode jewelry’s fate with me as a trend. Working across from her booth at the D&A show in New York City with the lovely Floriana Annibali, who was repping it, I tried this ring on at least five times. Now I’m on the hunt to find more representations of what is clearly a trend for the raw and chunky.

Kimberly McDonald’s one-of-a-kind pieces are also breathtaking and she’ll actually split a geode for you upon request as a special gift for mother/daughters and twins.

Many local jewelers in your community who can’t afford a website might have lots of these trendy gems. Your best bet is to make a map of some of them and make it a personal mission with one of your more adventurous friends to find one.
