What is Fair Trade Fashion?

Fair Trade certified fashion is considered clothing and accessories made from materials produced in a way that helps producers in developing nations obtain improved levels of income and community infrastructure, and therefore better living conditions.

In other words, it is fashion made from cotton and other materials grown or produced in a way that respects the people and the environment where it’s produced. This means that a cotton farmer will receive a fair price for growing cotton, and laborers will receive decent working and living conditions.

Fair Trade certification also indicates the freedom for farmers to organize cooperatives and unions, allowing arenas for unified decision making, alongside a commitment to stay away from agrochemicals. This is especially important for cotton, since the estimated amount of agrichemicals used on traditional cotton is 16-25 percent more than for any other single crop.

Fair Trade Cotton

There is currently only one major Fair Trade certified crop for the fashion industry, and that’s cotton. Cotton is one of the most used textile fibers in the world. It is vital for the survival of many in low-income, developing communities in Africa and India.

In fact, it is estimated that about 100 million households directly engage in cotton production, and 300 million people work in the cotton industry through either farm or factory labor. With challenges such as climate change, poor seed prices, and competition from highly subsidized farmers in richer countries such as the U.S. (where farmers receive $4.3 billion in subsidies), cotton farmers in third world nations often live in hardship.

When Fair Trade certification of cotton is employed, it not only affects the wages of the farmers and workers, but also provides them with premiums to use toward community projects such as establishing water access or building schools. This is what makes Fair Trade certification important not only on the supply chain level, but as a tool to create better living conditions across the supply chain.

Fair Trade has also been instrumental in creating new opportunities for women, especially in the fashion and clothing markets. Since equal pay and equal worker’s rights are at the forefront to Fair Trade policies, women are provided with specific privileges for maternity leave, healthcare, and freedom from harassment. Several women working in the Fair Trade cotton and artisan industries have used their income to invest in small business opportunities in order to support their families and children.

While Fair Trade certification certainly promotes environmentally and socially responsible practices, it does not mean that a product is necessarily certified organic. Some Fair Trade products are organic but not certified, while some are certified organic. Organic certification is another cost to farmers and producers, and many do not have funds to obtain it even though their growing methods are essentially organic.

Other Types of Fair Trade Products

From the rice you eat for lunch, to the comforter that keeps you warm in your bed at night, these items and so many more can be sourced and purchased as Fair Trade products. You are no longer limited to coffee and clothing. In fact, even that bottle of wine in your fridge and your child’s prized soccer ball are capable of supporting a farmer or village in need of greater monetary gain.

The importance and urgency of buying Fair Trade is becoming more mainstream. Consumers are beginning to see the differences being made, not only in terms of quality products, but also in terms of quality treatment of deserving and hardworking individuals in impoverished regions. Certification Process

There are many major Fair Trade organizations today, but the main internationally recognized organization working to administer Fair Trade cotton certification is Fair Trade International (FLO). FLO works as a third party, objectively measuring the viability of cotton utilizing the company’s raw material, supply chain, and final product through audits.

Auditing involves visits to farms and interviews with workers conducted by members of the certifying organization, alongside research evaluating the practices involved further along in the supply chain. These audits are comprehensive, and are followed up with at least twice during the following three years.

Since the supply chain for fashion items is so long and complicated, with many parties involved, it’s important to have each part of the chain meet Fair Trade standards. The FLO-CERT initiative does just that, indicating that Fair Trade practices have been implemented from growing the raw material through to producing the final, cotton product.

It is also important to realize that although a certain product may be Fair Trade certified, the company that produced it may not be fully dedicated to Fair Trade practices. By seeking out brands and companies that are part of membership organizations such as the Fair Trade Federation (North America only) and the World Fair Trade Organization, you can rest assured that they are fully committed to Fair Trade practices.

Other “Fair” Certifications

There are several other organizations that offer certifications and symbols for fair labor practices, although the viability of many may be questionable.

IMO Fair for Life

This certification is similar to the Fair Trade certification, covering fair working conditions alongside social responsibility practices. However, the standards for receiving certification are rather loose, and companies can contract the organization to certify their internal social codes and practices for a fee.

World Responsible Accredited Production 

Another non-profit organization, WRAP consists of a group of social compliance experts aiming to promote safe, humane, and lawful manufacturing practices in the apparel, footwear, and textile industries. Although the mission of the organization is laudable, the main flaw in certification is that most included members are accepted through a process of self-assessment, and only have to have been utilizing socially compliant practices for a minimum of 90 days prior to certification.

MADE-BY 

MADE-BY is a European non-profit organization providing fashion labels with tools and resources for creating more transparency. It offers a signature certification label, indicating that the brand’s production process can be traced and followed on MADE-BY’s website. The organization’s mission is to “make sustainable fashion common practice.”

Oeko-Tex 

Oeko-Tex is an independent and international testing and certification system used mainly for textiles and indicates the prohibition of certain chemicals in the production process. The basis for certification is built upon the latest scientific findings, and is continually updated as new research is provided.

Where to Buy Fair Trade Fashion

Fair Trade certified fashion is available through many outlets, so it is most important to know which brands and companies to trust. Green America offers a list of brick and mortar shops selling Fair Trade apparel across the United States. What exactly does Fair Trade fashion mean?

Fair Trade is a term that is often loftily thrown around, just like its compatriots “sustainable”, “eco” and “green”, causing several of us to have no concrete understanding of what the term entails. When it comes to Fair Trade fashion, we may have a fragmented understanding of the fair wages and working conditions that the certified garments were made in – but how is the certification acquired and what does it mean in reality? We’ve investigated to find out, so read on!

There are several different types of Fair Trade certification processes in existence -part of which makes understanding the viability and significance of the certification confusing. However, all Fair Trade certifications are created on the same base-line principles. To receive certification a product must meet all of the criteria, which is the case of a fashion item must:

• Be made from a material grown and processed under Fair Trade conditions, meaning that the farmers receive fair prices and credit for their crop.
• Be manufactured by factory workers or artisans working under satisfactory, safe conditions and receiving fair wages. Forced child and slave labor are strictly prohibited.
• Be purchased by the retail label as directly as possible from the makers, cutting out the middle men. Most often the designers or design team of the fashion label will work directly with the artisans to convey their designs to the weavers, knitters, sewers and embellishers.
• Be created in a setting that fosters transparency and accountability throughout the textile and garment supply chain.
• Be created by communities of farmers, artisans and/or factory workers whose economic independence, social infrastructure and business organization skills are consequentially developed.
• Be manufactured in an environmentally friendly way, most favorably with organic certification of the raw materials (e.g. cotton, silk, wool, rayon, etc.) used, and with strict prohibition of harmful agrochemicals and GMOs.

These points are carefully inspected by the Fair Trade organization, which carries out routine check ups to maintain worker safety and health and ensure fair wages and prices to workers and farmers. This in turn helps the communities where various fashion items are made (which often are in third-world, developing countries or underprivileged communities) to improve standards and help establish sustainable local economies to develop local health care, education and social services. People Tree (a committed and certified Fair Trade fashion label) has beautifully outlined the benefits of Fair Trade on their blog.

The benefits of developing Fair Trade certified products and markets are immense, especially in developing countries where many fashion items are produced. The fragmented and often far from transparent supply chain of the fashion industry can often make Fair Trade certification difficult for garments and accessories, but can be trusted if the company provides specific information, down to the person who made your particular item, on the clothing tag, website or in-store.

If a fashion brand claims to be selling Fair Trade certified items, you can do your research, looking them up online to see if the information they provide backs up this claim. There are several online stores selling crafts that adhere to Fair Trade principals, and can be found through the Fair Trade USA website, which also points out Good & Fair Clothing, HAE Now, prAna, and Tompkins Point Apparel as Fair Trade fashion producers. Although based in the UK, The Fairtrade Foundation’s shopping guide also provides a list of brands and retailers providing us with Fair Trade fashion. To see more Fair Trade fashion options become available, contact your favorite label to educate them on the matter and inform them of how you and several others are more likely to invest in their products if they source Fair Trade certified ones.

Fair trade fashion is fashion with meaning, fashion that was created with respect for people and planet. It undeniably has the “moral and just” ring to it, but what does it actually mean? Being inside this industry – talking the ethical fashion talk – can at times lead to a disconnect from what a fair fashion framework actually translates to in the reality of its production.

When it comes to sourcing fabrics, creating garments, and inserting them into the marketplace as competitive and fashionable commodities, getting in on the sourcing journey is integral to a better understanding of the truths behind this mentality. Based here in Ghana for the month, I’m on an eye-opening adventure with Brooklyn-based fashion label Afia. Along this fabric sourcing and production journey, I’ve shared some of the stories that remind me of why “make fashion fair” is my mantra.

Designs Done Right

The fabrics are where it’s at for designer Meghan Sebold who has always fed her self-proclaimed “utilitarian creativity” by styling and altering clothing. For Sebold, “Fashion as art has a practicality to it because clothing is a basic need (or maybe that’s how I excuse myself from being attached to material things). I can look at a painting hanging on my wall and that’s well and good, but it’s more satisfying to me that I can use this shirt every day as something functional and still have created it in a visually pleasing way.” Her fashion label Afia merges a collection of all of her favorite things: challenging comfort zones and norms, intuitive living, predicting trends, fusing worlds, and making a process personal.

Into The Textiles

Sebold’s sourcing expedition begins in the hot, hectic and cacophonous markets of Accra, Ghana. Maneuvering in and out of tiny shops that contain fabric stacks as high as the ceiling, finding the true Ghanaian-made cotton wax prints is something Sebold explains as not as simple as you would expect. “There are many imitations so we’re well-educated on which brands are authentic. New fabric styles are printed every month and when they’ve sold out in the market you may never see them again – that means every one of our pieces is limited edition and a collector’s item after the season is over.”

A continual cultural experience, Sebold selects design silhouettes that honor the textiles; “the fabric is really the main event, I just enhance it and make it wearable.”

Tailored Humor

Making one-of-a-kind pieces that you can covet, but also feasibly afford is something Sebold feels strongly about. The focus of every Afia collection is, “To make it as accessible as possible. Sustainable fashion shouldn’t be a luxury or a sacrifice of personal style.” And wearing that motto on her sleeve goes hand-in-hand with the recurring feeling she attaches to her collections: a sense of humor.

“Humor is the most essential quality to survival. If I didn’t have a sense of humor, I would be curled up in a fetal position in a stairwell,” says Sebold.

Women to Women

Once Afia’s designs and patterns are agreed upon, the next step is traveling to Kpando, a smaller town where Sebold does a large portion of her production. After a 4-hour ride into the countryside, packed into a tro tro (Ghana’s most typical form of transport, which is basically a mini bus), the Afia team arrives at Dzidefo, a women’s sewing cooperative, that sits atop an orphanage managed by the lovely Mama Esi. Mobbed and overwhelmed by the energy and enthusiasm of the children that live there, moments were quickly made that warmed our hearts and left footprints on our souls.

Hands On

An intimate group of seven local women from the community make up the sewing cooperative. From the early rooster call to the rustle of fabric to a baby’s morning cry, these sounds all set the stage for each day’s first stitch from their vintage Singers. The women, with their babies or little ones, bring a homey, relaxed dynamic to the sunlit work environment.

Collaborative Creations

“Collaboration is what it’s all about – but it also takes a lot of navigating and communication to make it a collaboration where people willingly and generously contribute their talents. The process can be uncomfortable at times, but I think that’s how you know you’re onto something. The mindset must be that the teaching and learning goes both ways.” For Sebold, listening and sharing is the way forward in creating beautiful garments together. Working with the women at Dzidefo is both challenging and fulfilling, but connecting across cultural and language barriers provides motivation for both Sebold and the women sewers to learn more from each other and create more gorgeous garments together.

Fashion For The Future

The constant thread woven throughout all of Afia’s work is to showcase how incredibly interconnected we are to people around the world. Sebold explains, “As it relates to fashion, there’s a huge disconnect between the producer and the consumer, mostly because there’s an ugly story behind the $20 shirt being sold to you. I believe in transparency on all levels, and offer Afia to consumers as a stylish and ethically-made option.”

While Afia is just a needle in the hay stack when it comes to fashion brands today, Sebold and her team are stitching a distinct respect, human dignity, and understanding into the composition of their fabrics. This positive, inspiring energy is contagious; its viral potential will always resurface to the forefront of my mind through traveling and exposure to new faces and places.

Recycled saree fabrics bring new meaning to a well-heeled existence.

Following on the heels of Louise Lagosi’s in-depth investigation into the destiny of cast-off clothing, it seems fitting that a query into summer sandals of the endlessly chic variety would be essential fashion beach reading.

I never know how to identify the perfectly stylish sandal that will last beyond one season. Given the wear and tear that I put my trusty shoes through, a durable heel with some amazing flirty detailing seems like the impossible find. Enter Mohop Shoes and their new ready-to-wear Saree Collection. Crafted out of recycled saree fabrics from a bold non-profit enterprise in India as well as sustainably farmed Pará rubber tree wood, these interchangeable lace-ups are all about empowerment for the user and everyone along the way.

Designer Annie Mohaupt takes on sustainable fashion in fearless style

Sandals are an age-old fashion staple, and now that the gladiator sandal is old news, it’s time slip on some heels that really take you places, both on foot and in mission. Annie Mohaupt of Mohop Shoes has considered every last detail when it comes to her goal of creating the most eco-friendly shoe available. This architect turned shoe designer has had her toes in the soil from the very beginning, as her upbringing on a small sheep farm one hundred miles west of Chicago primed her for life as a some one attuned to the resourceful use of materials as well as the life cycle of her designs.

When I asked Annie what makes her shoes such knockouts, besides their chic design appeal and the cool versatility of the interchangeable saree ties that easily lace up through elastic loops, she had this to say about each of Mohop’s Saree Collection components:

Recycled Saree Textiles

“The Saree Collection is pretty exciting due to our new collaboration with Jhoole, a non-profit social enterprise in India. Each saree sandal tie is made from re-used sarees, which are brought to life again as colorful, scarf-like ties for our sandals. Indian women receive fair-trade wages for this textile production work, enabling them to support their families and educate their children. Mohop also donates 100 percent of the price for the saree ties towards the construction, maintenance, and training required at the computer lab for girls and women at Jhoole’s new facility in Maheshwar, India.”

Pará Rubber Tree Wood

“Our sandals are composed of wood from Pará rubber trees. Our trees spend the years prior to their pre-footwear life cleaning the atmosphere of CO2. Pará trees are grown on plantations in tropical regions. The trees are tapped just like maple trees for their latex, which is used for rubber production. After twenty-five years or so, the trees can no longer produce latex, so the wood is reused for a secondary purpose: shoes.

Pará rubber tree plantations are an income-generating crop for families in tropical regions, discouraging locals from clear-cutting forestland for livestock or other less-sustainable crops. Rubber wood plantations mimic indigenous tropical forests and provide a natural habitat for plants and animals, some of which are severely threatened or endangered.

The rubber wood undergoes very minimal processing to be carved into footwear, and all scraps and even sawdust is re-used. Our shoe wood is colored with water-based dyes and will eventually decompose naturally (after its life as well-loved shoes). Additionally, most of our other footwear materials and packaging contains recycled content.”  –  Annie Mohaupt

The complex and textured story behind sustainable design is an increasingly important part of the environmentally friendly and conscious fashion equation. In order to reach beyond a checklist of materials and mission guidelines, it seems essential that designers also engage their followers in the process of what it takes to get dressed or accessorized.

Mohop Shoes takes this one step further by making sustainable fashion interactive and even playful in an effort to bring us back to the source of what “well heeled” really means. A display of true wealth comes from both stylish decision-making and ethical fashion awareness. It’s all tied up, no matter how you choose to look at it.
