Sensitivity and vulnerability are the stuff of French artist Elisabeth Lecourt. The vulnerability and the fragility of bodies is the course she has mapped for her body of work of painting, installation and objects.

It is these aspects of her abilities that take the flat material of her series, Les Robes Géographiques to another level. Lecourt uses maps from around the world to makes clothes and garments as a “rubbing of the body and the soul.” A continuation of themes found throughout her work, Lecourt strives to understand the fragility of the body and that which lies within.

Lecourt, who moved to London to attend The Royal College of Art, started Les Robes Géographiques as a series of studies and sketches in 2002. As a cartographer depicts maps to understand the world we live in, Lecourt maps the shape of clothing, forming a connection with the “owner,” and leaving us wondering where she’s been and where she’s going.
