Just looking at this scarf you can feel the warmth and skill that went into it’s creation. So it’s no surprise this trigo shawl was made in collaboration with Mapuche weavers in Southern Chile. Voz, translating to voice in Spanish, is a certified B Corporation company, meaning it’s a certified sustainable company (like what fairtrade is to coffee). Their motto is “change through beauty.”

4. I Love People Tree Scarf by People Tree

Produced ethically in Bangladesh, this scarf was handwoven using recycled yarn. People Tree was the first company ever to receive GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) certification, and the first to integrate an organic cotton supply chain from farm to final product.  It’s is extremely encouraging to see a label bring slow fashion, hope and change to a region which is often a victim of fast fashion production.

5. Bengal Blue by Indigo Handloom 

For Indigo Handloom it all began when founder Smita Paul went on a freelance writing assignment to India to learn about the silk industry. Continually intrigued by the region, in 2003 she created the label. Using century-old weaving practices and out to support the weavers themselves, the label is a perfect example of fusing artisan skill and modern style. Organic cotton, hand embroidery, block printed lively patterns and recycled saris feature in a collection of silhouettes that celebrate the female figure.

Known as the “pioneer of Fair Trade and sustainable fashion”, People Tree has certainly come a long way in providing ethically produced clothing that meets the trend-oriented eye of the modern consumer. Since 2001, the label has been working to improve the lives of the farmers and artisans that have a hand in creating clothes for the label, ensuring fair and healthy living conditions that aren’t compromised for the sake of fashion. A high commendation recipient of the recent London Sustainable City Awards, People Tree demonstrates its charming interpretation of desirable and sustainable fashion through its most recent, 1950s inspired collection.

There’s something to be said for a beautiful, figure flattering dress, and the designers at People Tree have certainly taken on the task of offering just that this season. Taking inspiration from ’50s silhouettes and prints, the newest collection features waist cinching, above-the-knee styles with sweetheart necklines, boat necks and dropped sleeves. Several of the materials used have been handwoven on a jacquard loom, and the embroidered dresses have all been embellished by hand.

Feminine skirts also take center stage in People Tree’s SS 2013 collection, with hip-hugging pencils in easily matchable, simple colors, alongside girlier versions in bold, colorful prints and high-waisted bell shapes. All are made out of 90-100 percent certified organic cotton.

Peplum shapes, draped hems and graphic prints feature on shirts and tops which are perfect with a pair of cropped trousers. People Tree offers several pairs of organic cotton trousers,  but our favorites are the navy ones with white polka dots and the black and white monochrome flower print pair.

As a staple of the ’50s wardrobe, People Tree certainly hasn’t forgotten about the cardigan. The hand-knit collection includes skillfully embroidered, delicate flower and fruit motifs that add the perfect touch of romantic color to a spring wardrobe.

People Tree also boasts a collection of Fair Trade accessories including bags, scarves, cases, belts and socks. All of these items are handmade by artisans and several of the bags, clutches and make-up cases are even made out of recycled, 100 percent cotton saris.

Equa is a small Islington boutique that sells organic, fair-trade clothing from approximately 20 different designers. For children and infants, Green Baby houses organic and fairly-trade baby and mother goods, from clothing to beauty to nursery items. The Family Tree sells lamps, shades, hooks, tables, and jewelry, all of which are made ethically and locally. The store also carries People Tree, a fair-trade clothing store in operation since 2001.

Looking for the perfect shoes to go with that fair-trade blouse? Terra Plana is a shoe company that uses recyclable products. It compensates for its CO2 emissions through donations and uses vegetable leather, leather without chromium, and its self-created “E-Leather,” which is a mix of leather and textile fibers. Terra Plana has a store in Covent Garden, Brushfield Street and Westfield.

Alberta Ferretti and Emma Watson collaborate on a five-piece capsule collection.

Last year EcoSalon reported on the Emma Watson/Alberta Ferretti design collaboration. French actress and singer Jane Birkin was the celebrated inspiration; Ferretii has said that Watson came to the table with a definite Birkin-circa-seventies image in mind. Calling the collection Pure Threads, the duo have produced the five-piece capsule collection in Italy from cotton poplin, cotton muslin, and hemp. Pure Threads will be available beginning March 21, available exclusively on AlbertaFerretti.com.

With the collection name finally out in the wild as well as the launch date, the two hope their Birkin-inspired line will elevate sustainable to a more fashion-forward level.

Watson tells WWD: “I’m pleased that a luxury brand such as Alberta Ferretti has decided to create ecological clothes. I believe this is a big step forward for all of the international fashion industry, but also an important step for an increased sensitivity to the problem of ecology,” not to mention pushing seventies sexy to a more mature consumer than her People Tree line, which catered to a much younger audience.

InStyle has reported that prices will range from $345, to $1,173, and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to People Tree, the nonprofit fair-trade organic fashion organization Watson supports and still designs for.
