Organic John Patrick

Everywhere you look you see them, even on the non-hog riding gang. Call them rebels with a cause – a need to look trendy while making a statement about planet-friendly fibers.

Biker jackets! The fashion trend comes full circle once again.

Think back to Marlon Brando in his 1953 cult flick, The Wild One, where just manly men wore the hardware-ridden jackets.

Fast forward to Seattle grunge hitting the scene in the mid 80s. Women and men clad in biker jackets, oversized flannel shirts and combat boots were the sensation. Scores of us identified with popular bands like Sonic Youth and The Pixies with an additional nod to grittier punk rock. Both sexes opted out of the mainstream, took their drugs, listened to Nirvana and gave the finger to fitting in.

This time around, babes in biker jackets rule supreme in styles that speak more softly thanks to eco-designers utilizing alternative fabrics. This one from KellyB, made from 50% organic cotton and 50% recycled polyester, is a hot substitute for leather while still doing the job of keeping you warm.

Raw Earth’s take on the trend in the color purple is right in gear for 2009.

Reif, out of Portland, Oregon has her own hip take on the biker jacket in her Spring 2010 collection which just might be my go-to piece if I move fast enough.

No longer are we expected to carry the weight of leather a la Brando. Now, it goes one further, getting notice not just for the cool factor, but the integrity of the design. Even Brando would have to agree: This is the real deal.

Hells bells. Stop eating that Halloween candy, girl!

Like an epiphany, it dawned on me today that spring is just five months away, and I chucked my Heath Bar into the compost. True, we’re scarcely into winter, but the spring fashion alert is already on: Cutouts are everywhere and will be forcing us to bare regions more sacred than Area 51 (that’s the nether land just under your armpit, by the way).

Pieces like the one above, by Poppomomo, which I love, invite us to engage personal trainers to target Area 51 proper.

And this little ditty from Reif screams I’m pretty from the front, but what about my back? Is it tight enough? Moles all in a row?

Lara Miller isn’t remiss, either, with her floor-length goddess dress. I want to wear high ponytails just like her model. It says, Hey, I left the gym and just happened to throw this on.

Isn’t there any rest for the wicked who love pies, hearty soups and fresh-baked cookies?

Apparently not. So pay heed, oh darling bundled one, in your over-sized organic cotton number, in your Peruvian Highland wool and stretchy skinny jeans: Five months from now, you will be asked to bare.

Will you be ready for this warmer weather trend?

Colder days are coming. Maybe they’re already here for you.

Time to think about sweaters and layering, which is exactly what the Germaine Pullover from Reif is all about. Stand alone or layered with a tight fitting long sleeve t-shirt, we’re in love.

So warm and flattering, it has a sweater knit on outside, but fleece-y on the inside. For fun detailing there are two side-seam pockets lined in plaid print and a half-length sleeve with a chevron cuff detail. A wide funnel neckline gives the impression that you are a walking portrait.

Eco? Well, thanks to the designer’s ability to manipulate recycled poly fleece (end-run fabric) and hand make it in Portland, Oregon, we’re sold on her dedication to sustainability.

Check out her online store: reifclothing.bigcartel.com and website: www.reif-haus.com to see more. And drop a comment to win one of your own.
