Carrying the torch for green.

In a London Olympics 2012 poster titled “being greener”, the London Organizing Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games vows to keep this year’s Games eco-friendly.

London’s Olympic Park will be one of the biggest city parks newly constructed in Europe for more than 150 years. The Games will host 26 Olympic events, 20 Paralympic events, 14,700 athletes, 21,000 media, and 10.8 million ticket holders. While it will inevitably boost the city’s economy, the strain on resources is unavoidable. The Organizing Committee is working hard to maintain a high level of sustainability despite all that needs to be constructed, and the the “being greener” poster is a representation of London’s conscious efforts to make its Olympics the greenest of them all.

The Park will be equipped with some of the most cutting-edge technology to curtail the Games’ greenhouse gas emissions, preserve the natural habitat surrounding the area, as well as to recycle, reuse and reduce all waste. In a pamphlet distributed by the Organizing Committee, the extent of London’s green efforts are detailed.

20% of the energy used on the Olympic Park will come from renewable sources

4,000 newts and hundreds of toads have been removed from the Park to be protected

90% of the materials from the demolition of building in the Olympic Park have been recovered so they can be reused or recycled.

50% of materials that are being used to construct the Park will be transported by water or rail, saving thousands of trips on local roads.

A 120-meter wind turbine in the Park will produce enough electricity for 1,000 homes

80 lampposts, 2 tons of red bricks, and 76 tons of paving stones will be saved for reuse on the Park.

A 3-kilometer footpath and cycle-way will be improved for the local population as well as wildlife.

Rubbish was removed from 8.35 kilometers of waterways running through the Olympic Park

Fifteen facts about golf courses that will make you think twice about picking up that putter.

Avid golfers look at a golf course and see lush, green fairways, rolling hills, and the summer sun reflecting off the dew. They feel the silence before an important shot and smell the crisp, verdant aroma of freshly shorn grass. But many environmentalists look at a golf course and see a giant ecological disaster. They see wasted water, pesticides, and displaced wildlife. They miss the natural landscape that was cleared in order to make room for the links, and they despair at a parking lot full of gas-wasting SUVs.

The golf industry has received harsh criticism for its lack of environmental stewardship, and the good news is that many golf course designers and superintendents are paying more attention to the environmental impacts of golf courses. More courses are now designed to feature native plants and grasses, especially those that are most pest-resistant and require the least amount of water. Increasingly, courses are irrigated with reclaimed water, taking the pressure off of municipal drinking water supplies. That’s all good news.

The bad news is that golf courses still wreak havoc on the environment, and as more people take up the sport and play golf regularly, the future’s full of even more courses vying for scarcer resources. The golf industry may be trying to change itself for the better, but as these facts show, it might not be changing fast enough.

The United States is home to about 18,000 golf courses, about half the world total of 35,000.

Golf generates about $49 billion per year for the American economy.

It takes about 2.5 billion gallons of water to water the world’s golf courses each day.

The UN estimates that 2.5 billion gallons of water per day would provide 4.7 billion people with clean drinking water.

The average golf course is treated with 18 pounds of pesticide per acre per year.

The average acre of agricultural land uses 2.7 pounds of pesticide.

Only 29 percent of American golf courses participate in any formal environmental stewardship program.

The average golf course in Thailand uses approximately 6,500 cubic meters of water per day, or about the same amount as is consumed daily by 60,000 villagers.

According to the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America, about 27 million people in the United States play golf regularly, which is less than 10 percent of the total population.

There are approximately 2,244,512 square acres of golf courses in the United States, an area of land larger than the states of Rhode Island and Delaware combined.

The size of golf courses is growing. Thanks to modern equipment, golfers hit the ball farther than they used to, resulting in newer courses being longer and wider than older ones.

The average American golf course uses about 312,000 gallons of water per day. A desert course (such as one in Palm Springs or Las Vegas) can consume up to one million gallons of water per day.

The average American family of four uses about 400 gallons of water per day, or one million gallons every 6.8 years.

Las Vegas is home to more than 60 golf courses. The Palm Springs region has more than 125.

According to a survey conducted by Golf Digest in 2008, 41 percent of golfers do not believe in climate change.

T-minus 32 days.

With little more than a month until opening ceremonies, it’s clear that Olympics mania has swept Great Britain, if not the entire world. That’s why it wasn’t a surprise to find dozens upon dozens of infographics exploring every single aspect of London 2012, from the games’ economic impact to the rise in ticket prices to random facts and figures (did you know that Londontown is now home to the biggest McDonald’s ever?). If you just can’t take the anticipation for this year’s games to kick off, here are ten fun infographics to whet your appetite.

Trade the studio for the grass.

Now that summer is on its way, it’s time to take your indoor fitness routines outdoors. We’ll show you how.

Tip #1: Grab your mat and get thee to the beach, a park, or a local rooftop.

Few things are more demoralizing than doing sun salutations indoors when the sun is actually out, or spending two hours of your precious summer days within the confines of a studio. Outdoor yoga is already popular in beach towns and tropical destinations, especially at retreats that combine yoga with other outdoor activities, such as surfing, hiking, and kayaking. A quick Google search can help travelers locate appropriate retreats.

For urbanites, many large yoga outfitters and studios now sponsor public outdoor (and free!) classes, and some major cities, like New York City, are getting in on the action. There are also an increasing number of local studios that offer rooftop classes in places void of green space. If you don’t have access to any of these options, you can always grab your mat and take it to your deck or a quiet, flat section of your lawn.

Here are five tips to make your outdoor yoga experience more fun and effective:

Bring a padded mat (or double up your mats), especially if on a deck or rooftop.

Load up on sunscreen, and, if necessary, non-toxic bug spray. If space allows, calendula candles will help keep mosquitoes at bay, unless the smoke would be bothersome during your deep breathing exercises.

Especially on hot and humid days, stay well-hydrated before and after class, and bring a towel.

For windy days, an extra headband will help with flyaways.

Wear moisture-wicking yoga clothes. Added bonus if they’re organic!

Outdoor yoga is definitely not for everyone, especially those who have allergies, don’t like curious bystanders, or are easily distracted (think bugs in the park, sticky sand on the beach, or roadside noise on a rooftop). Then again, overcoming distractions may be a good way of practicing the meditative side of yoga.

Not every gal is game for the hand sores, muscle aches and exhaustion that come with rowing your boat fiercely down the stream. You also have to be a whiz at time management, since crew cuts deeply into school and work schedules with its ridiculously early wake up calls to run, row and build endurance for hard core sculling.

No rest for the worthy, it’s off to the rowing machines (aka ergs) in the afternoon to pump up arm, core and leg strength and increase your SPM (strokes per minute), sometimes followed by a grueling night run after dinner. Like military boot camp, it’s all about one buff girl being part of a well-oiled machine. Anchors (and personal time) away!

It’s no wonder everyone who feels the burn, bellyaches. So why commit?

“The pros, I would say, are being in the best shape of your life from the intense workouts, being mentally strong and making great friendships,” shares Richard Tzeng, head coach of the girls’ crew team at Saint Ignatius College Preparatory in San Francisco, CA, which is recognized as one of the best programs in the country. “The cons are it can burn you out. You come home from practice so tired that you can’t do homework, and it takes a level of commitment to keep up with school work and the time the sport demands.”

Still, if you are able to stay afloat, rowing could be your ticket to college. If you’re very good at the sport, you might even score a free ride. This option is especially attractive to frustrated Californians who are finding it challenging to get into cash poor state schools, even with a 4.0 GPA.

More colleges are adding nontraditional women sports like rowing to satisfy Title IX requirements for gender equity in federally funded institutions.

Among them is Ohio State, which hiked women’s rowing to varsity status nine years ago. The team has deep pockets – $900,000 annually – to grant 20 scholarships, including 16 with 100 percent of tuition covered. Still, because of the high demands of the sport, there often aren’t enough high school rowers to go around, according to recruiters, who sometimes solicit complete novices on campus who have never sat in a shell.

Even if you rowed your last year of high school and never made a splash (like many newbies) you can still attract the coaches and recruiters. But Tzeng points out that you have to genuinely like the sport to keep your spot on a team.

“I coach girls to love the sport the way I love it, and if you do it primarily to get into a school, then you won’t last one year in college,” he says.

Last year, his rowers went on to schools like Harvard, Georgetown and Stanford. A coxswain went to Cornell. They also got into top state universities. Some schools like UCSB have crew clubs and don’t offer scholarships but CAL has a powerful women’s crew team with a stunning house in Oakland and a summer camp program to train interested girls.

At one time, recruits came strictly from New England prep schools, but according to the New York Times, rowers are being reeled in from drier parts of the nation with no history of rowing, as well as from overseas. Ohio State’s top varsity rowers have come from Germany, Russia, and the Netherlands.

Beyond the college degree, rowing gets a taped thumbs up for reforming onetime couch potatoes who suddenly find themselves going out for runs instead of watching reruns of NCIS. Wonders never cease. And for some high school girls, the military structure and rigor of being up at dawn and having to get your homework done before hitting the sack, leaves little down time for midweek distractions that have some parents unglued, namely obsessions with make-up and fashion, boy troubles and mood altering drugs.

If all of these factors don’t float your boat, you might just want to stick to the landlubber’s volleyball and soccer, and start saving up for college. But remember, that course too, might prove a bumpy ride.

Trade in your SUV for a hybrid? Now that’s a stretch for many drivers who are hooked on the notion that more is more, even in the age of doomed resources.

Why is it that well informed, nice people refuse to pull the plug on those ubiquitous waste wagons, despite poor gas mileage and environmental concerns?

The valid eco argument rubs up against a strong attachment to the behemoth breed at every turn as America keeps on trucking. People feel good having them in the garage, owning one after another, perhaps scaling down with a “hybrid” sport ute but not going cold turkey.

    <!-- ES-In-Content

It’s a pernicious addiction flaunted in outdoorsy states like California, Arizona and Colorado, where the boxy cars dominate the parking lots of public beaches, shopping malls and ski resorts. Hey, they’re super suburban and sporty, can hold a family of five to eight extremely comfortably, and can’t be beat for schlepping unruly, drooling pets. And don’t forget the winning outcome in bumper-to-bumper combat with puny Smart Cars and other precocious upstarts.

The benefits keep consumers from succumbing to pressure levied by anti-SUV groups like Greener Cars.org, who have galvanized movements against what they deride as “Land Bruisers” and “Extinctions,” spreading slogans like “SUV’s Suck!” I spoke with some of these critics, along with owners to understand the mega car mindset.

There are many obvious and hidden reasons good people won’t buck the truck:

1.Versatility

You can dress the trucks up or down. They handle like cars but have truck qualities. This is what attracts Rob Raznick, a childless, L.A. real estate developer with three horses and three dogs who has owned five super-sized SUV’s. “You’re mixing luxury with utility, cargo, space and amenities for sure,” Raznick says. “I can take my Navigator to the finest restaurant in the evenings with seven people, then put saddles in it the next morning and hook my horse trailer to it and go off road. ”

2. Safety and Security

Sitting high up, looking down on people, not hearing the road or other cars. The stereo is on – the preferred soundtrack to life – and the kids are quietly seated in the back watching a DVD. “It feels like a comfortable couch or easy chair, a safe family room on wheels with that video player, phone and coffee holder, and that’s why one of the biggest ones by Chevy was called the Suburban,” observes consumer activist Ed Lamar. “But it’s like feeling secure because you have nuclear weapons. It is a false sense since they are not safe or secure.”

3. Great for Kids

How many kids can you fit in your car for soccer practice? SUV moms sometimes say eight, while many of us can only fit four. Carpool duty, built-in DVD players and getting those baby carriers easily in and out are among the big lures for parents who opt for the vehicles. Although Janelle Ticktin, a mom of two, says it isn’t as much the kids but the curbs. She can drive up to them with her mega wheels whenever she needs to. “Everyone in Scottsdale drives them because there is tons of space to park all over the city, unlike the situation in congested towns like San Francisco,” she says.

4. Empowerment

Many of us are looking for power in our powerless lives, and this clearly extends to the road, where big rig envy lets you rule with a small sense of anonymity, especially with that tinted window option. American workers sit in cubicles all day to pay for luxuries like the sport vehicle and a growing number are hiding them from the re-po man. Does fear drive these owners? “You can bring a little suburbia with you when you go the mean streets and pose a threat to everyone around you, and assert your power by not allowing lane changes,” explains Lamar. “Anyone who looks in their rear view mirror will see your grill.”

4. Off Road Use

Commercials featuring minis gliding through water? Nah. Can’t compete with the way SUV’s are hyped on television. The ads show the picture of the sporty, American life, not being limited by pavement, tearing up some big wheel ruts. And it is a huge draw for weekend warriors who want to get out of Dodge in a Ford Escape and head to the beaches, mountains and other beautiful terrain. “It’s like a ballet for a depraved society,” says one critic.

5. Hauling Cargo

Those without trucks must hire people to lift and haul cargo – or hit up a friend with an SUV. Put the seats down and store your work tools and supplies, Costco economy bundles or toys (skis, snow board, mountain bike). Take home that giant squishy chair you bought on sale at Urban Outfitters. The SUV supports both work and play for many. But the question remains: Is it still okay to drive so much to play?

6. Status

It takes money to buy them and keep the tank fed, and lots of drivers tend to equate the shiny trucks with having arrived, even if it means having arrived on the freeway or at Yosemite’s ritzy Ahwahnee Hote. If you are what you drive, does lugging an SUV make you a sportsman, surfer dude, powerful real estate woman or fierce weekend warrior? Conversely, what does driving a Mini Cooper make you? Clearly, many drivers can’t go there.

7. Hybrid = Eco Option

The introduction of hybrid SUV’s offered even more status to those ready to compromise but not sever their love of trucks. Hybrids are powered by the combo of a gas engine and an electric motor and there have been federal tax benefits offered to those embracing the hybrid technology, which the EPA estimates delivers twice the fuel economy in city driving and nearly double on the highway, along with lower emissions. People can feel hip driving one, like they are doing their part to reduce consumption and fossil fuel emissions.

8. Using them Economically

Some frugal owners clinging to their 1984 Caravans argue there are good ways to green their impossible-to-sell SUV’s. They include driving less and abiding by rules of the road (slowing speeds and brake and gas acceleration), keeping tires inflated and not idling. It could be those employing these methods are doing less damage than hybrid owners who don’t.

9. The “Fun” in Functional

Hummers, Land Rovers, 4-Runners and Land Cruisers have all been added to lists of the “most fun off-road cars” because of attributes like solid suspension, high ground clearance, crawl, action and stability control. The best ones can venture where many other vehicles can’t, and best of all, they look and feel like big toys as they cover rough terrain with ease. The Mercedes G-Class may rate badly in road tests and on fuel scores, but the car is just so darn adorable. One fan says this Jaguar of jeeps looks like “Herby the Lovebug and a Hummer got a little too friendly.”

10. Beauty and the Beast

In this beauty contest, fuel efficiency might take a back seat to striking good looks. Black SUVs have the largest cache (heck, they’re even in the President’s motorcade) and are common sites in downtowns these days as the choice of “important people.” The Mercedes G-Class may rate badly in road tests and on fuel scores, but the Mercedes emblem is still a yuppie success symbol.
