Pornography, for the chronofile.

You probably have a clock obsessive or two in your life. Perhaps you are one yourself. You could be the type of person who coordinates a trip to the clock section of a department store with the noon hour for an auditory fix of cuckoo sounds. You might simply be really into clocks. This does not make you or your loved one(s) cuckoo, in turn. Rather, a collector of an exacting sort: a chronofile.

Industrial designer and one of the founders of American Modernism George Nelson gets you. When writing about his 50-year career, during which time he made lots of clocks, he described it as a progression of creative “zaps,” timeless moments “when the solitary individual finds he is connected with a reality he never dreamed of.” Instances punctuated with every chime, bong, whir, click and shininess of an analog dial.

      googletag.display("div-gpt-ad-1430927735854-0");
      googletag.pubads().refresh([adslot4]);
    });

Exemplified below, the hands of time keeping the same continuum. For most of us, they are pretty clocks, some renowned as perennial timepieces of modernist design. But the chronofile sees something else: the continuance of time registering at its individual pitch.

This is the Women’s Multipurpose Co-Op’s attempt at making the world a more eco-friendly place, one recycled newspaper at a time. To coil this clock, each paper is wrapped and shaped into spiraled “building blocks” before being joined with thread and glue, and starched to make it firm. The cost is $28, well worth it considering the artisanal organization you’ll be helping out.

Meet Chroma Lab, a collaboration of two furniture doctors, Alicia Cornwell and Tony Bevilacqua, who merged their fine art skills and history backgrounds to transform “neglected but promising” decor.

Salvaging the treasures in the attic beats buying new any day. Why not go the distance, like Cornwell and Bevilacqua, and reclaim one man’s junk instead of tossing it?

The artful pair began dabbling in recycling, repainting and repairing castaways from their work digs in Boston a couple of years ago for their own pleasure. It was so much fun (Yippee, pass me another chair!) they went legit, embellishing everything from timeworn, high quality furniture to tired handcrafted lamps and clocks – customizing oldies but goodies from clients with pick-me-up colors and geometric flourishes.

Check out the lab’s new online store at Etsy. You can order painted treasures ready to ship. Or, if you live within 50 miles, they will deliver for free.

Bright spots from their lively portfolio include the Gum Drop Table; Glowing Tree Nightstands; Limeade Plant Stand; and an orange Table for a Rainy Day. The team has partnered with Grand, adding its furniture and clocks to one of Boston’s design most well-curated haunts for home accessories, clothing and gifts.
