Paris has long been regarded as the fashion capital of the world. And now, the creators of the Ethical Fashion Show are seeking to transmute that title across the fashion spectrum to encompass ethical fashion as well. Off to quite a good start, the Ethical Fashion Show held last week in Paris not only delivered an array of ethical designers from around the world including Europe, Peru, and India in a four day trade show, but lit up the catwalk with runway shows and bolstered intellectual debate in their break-off panels.

It is usually challenging to fully respond to spring/summer collections as we are just entering into the winter season, but at this year’s London Fashion Week S/S 11 sustainable fashion hit a new high note that transcended temperatures. For the first time ever, LFW gave eco-fashion its own show – The Sustainable Show. Designers as well known as Stella McCartney all the way to industry leaders like People Tree showcased their fashion in a collaborative presentation. Prophetik’s designer Jeff Garner held his own star-studded show, providing one of the best runway shows of the week. Finally, Parisian designer Ada Zanditon wrapped the week up with a show at the On/Off exhibit, and a new title as INNOVATION’s Fairtrade cotton category winner.

This year, Nolcha dedicated a day to having an Ethical Presentation where a dozen ethical designers showcased their brilliant collections and shared some of their passionate back stories on how their product came to be.

Attending The Green Shows during New York Fashion Week feels like a departure from the haughty attitudes as well as the not-so-sustainable practices of the mainstream fashion industry.

Backstage, models sit easily while natural products are applied to their skin and hair. The front of house is mingling and chatting sociably without a halo of status hanging over each person. In other words, the eco-scene is… well, good.

“Showing at the Green Shows is so wonderful because it is such an intimate setting,” says featured eco-designer Krystal Hoffacker of Dress Reform.

The Green Shows may be intimate with only a couple hundred attendees up against the vast numbers squeezing into the tents at Lincoln Center for Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, but one thing is certain – sustainable fashion is on the map and catching the interest of new designers as well as the public and press.

A packed house for Day Two at the Metropolitan Pavilion, where the Green Shows was hosted this year, turned out to see versatile pieces from Dress Reform, a live exhibit of the Uniform Project in conjunction with the new Bright Young Things line, and topped the day off with an evening presentation and party for New York’s little sustainable star, Samantha Pleet.
