Porsche recently unveiled its first all-electric car, along with a message that performance and sustainability can go hand in hand.

Its new 4-door, 4-seat luxury sedan can go from zero to 60 in 3.5 seconds, Porsche claims, putting it in competition with gas-powered rides like the Lamborghini and other Porsche models. The Porsche all-electric Mission E is expected to hit showrooms within the next five years. This newer, more sustainable model has an 800 volt battery, which is larger than its main competitor, Tesla’s Model S.

The New York Times reports:

Porsche claims the Mission E’s range is well over 300 miles — surpassing the Model S’s 253 miles — even when driving hard, as auto enthusiasts are known to do. Depleted batteries can be recharged to 80 percent in 15 minutes with Porsche’s Turbo Charging system. The charging system’s network will take time to develop properly, and the battery’s durability must be further tested under performance conditions — two reasons Porsche isn’t rushing production. Mission E can also recharge at existing 400-watt charge stations.

And Porsche already has three hybrid models: Cayenne S Hybrid, Panamera S E-Hybrid and 918 Spyder (costing $845,000!).

Again, The New York Times:

Porsche’s head of research and development, Wolfgang Hatz, said in an interview on Monday that the automaker’s engineers had been monitoring the market for a high-end, all-electric car. “When the time is right, we will be prepared,” he said. “We can build a car that is the Porsche of electric cars. The right technology is now available.”

Tesla’s Model S, which starts at $71,000, was introduced in June 2012. Model S scored a perfect 5.0 on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration safety rating and it’s been growing in popularity, especially in California and Norway. Audi recently introduced its crossover, the e-tron quattro, which, according to the article, can go 300 miles and fully recharge in 50 minutes.

Electric cars have yet to grab a meaningful piece of the automobile market. Currently, the U.S. has the largest share of the electric car market, where in 2014, 83,647 electric cars were sold. While it’s still a small piece of the pie, it’s a 26 percent increase in sales compared to 2013. Still, much of these sales, 55 percent in all, are hybrid electric cars. In terms of electric cars, the top sellers appear to be the Nissan Leaf and the Chevy Volt. Though the Porsche and Tesla models are obviously geared toward consumers that want to combine luxury, sustainability, and performance.

While the Mission E is still a concept car, it proves where the electric cars of the future are sure to go. As companies start to compete within this niche market, the cost will most certainly go down while the performance goes up. More and more consumers will trust that these cars are not only reliable, but fast and self indulgent by all standards. Spewing greenhouse gases isn’t going to be sexy in the future.

General Motors is making noticeable efforts to break away from the “your-grandpa’s-car” notion previously attached to its name. It has done so, in part, with its production of 4 electric cars, which will totally redefine how you think of clean fuel vehicles.

GM recently unveiled two new models of electric cars at the 2015 North American International Auto Show: The 2016 Chevrolet Volt and the Chevrolet Bolt EV concept, joining the Chevrolet Spark EV and Cadillac ELR Coupe on GM’s roster of such vehicles. Ranging from superbly practical to downright sexy, it seems that GM’s rebranding and forward-thinking efforts have created something for everyone concerned with fuel efficiency.

1. 2016 Chevrolet Volt

Simply put, the Volt is “fun to drive,” according to Alan Batey, president of GM North America. He’s not alone, though, since Volt owners are some of the most satisfied drivers around, creating a bit of a cult-like culture among them. After all, this electric car is a three-time consecutive winner of the JD Power APEAL award. Owners report using the first generation of the Volt’s electric capacity roughly 80 percent of the time, but voiced an eagerness to increase that usage to 100 percent, which the 2016 model looks to achieve. Since fewer trips to the gas station is one step toward reduced oil dependence, this car is a well-suited match to we, as the brand has nicknamed us, “greenies.”

Image: Steve Fecht

2. Chevrolet Bolt EV concept

Many are curious to know if the Bolt is simply a replacement for the Volt, to which Batey responds,“The answer is no.” Instead, the Bolt is looking to fill an affordability gap in the electric car market, which has been criticized for a sense of elitism among its options. With its $30,000 price tag, the Bolt is accessible to broader populations and won’t leave buyers won’t be short-changed. Given its 200-mile range, drivers can almost travel the distance between New York and Boston; that is, once all the snow melts.

Image: chevrolet.com

3. 2015 Chevrolet Spark EV

A new set of eyes is on the Spark EV: East Coasters. In January, GM announced that the Spark EV will be available in the state of Maryland in the spring of 2015, expanding its presence to a bicoastal status (previously, according the model was only available in Oregon and California). The Spark EV offers yet another affordable option; after federal and state tax credits, the car will go for $17,845. The newer model is priced modestly higher, $19,185, but with its 82-mile range, it’s sure to make Beltway Bandits smile.

Image: gm.com

4. Cadillac ELR Coupe

The ELR, it seems, is GM’s response to the high-end Tesla, advertising a 300-mile range to match its $75,000 starting price tag. With the Tesla’s highest-end Model X currently going for $80,000, the ELR is beyond comparable, especially when considering that it beats Tesla’s 230-mile range. Also on our appreciation checklist is the efforts of GM to make an environmental appeal by a brand formerly known for an impressively geriatric customer base. Pink Cadillac? No, thanks. We’re more inclined to check out this green Cadillac.

Could hydrogen fuel cell cars be commonplace in the near future? They could if Toyota has something to say about it.

Toyota president Akio Toyoda said that the company’s next step will be hydrogen fuel cell cars and the company head believes Toyota could mass market the vehicles some time in the not-so-distant future.

The company started work on the fuel cell technology two decades ago but because of the high cost of manufacturing, the cars were nearly $1 million each. Now Toyota is focused on more economical technology, in fact, their new hydrogen fuel cell car, the Mirai will be available in Europe for $62,000.

“This is not an alternative to a gasoline vehicle,” Scott Samuelsen, an engineer and director of the National Fuel Cell Research Center at the University of California at Irvine told Business Week. “This is a quantum step up.”

Hydrogen fuel cell cars run on hydrogen gas rather than gasoline so they emit heat and water rather than greenhouse gases. They can go 300 miles before needing to be refueled. While the cars look similar to traditional cars on the outside, they contain a fuel cell stack that converts hydrogen gas and oxygen into electricity to drive the electric motor. The cars can fuel in less than five minutes.

“The automobile industry can contribute to the sustainable growth of Earth itself,” Akio told Business Week. “At Toyota, we are looking out 50 years and even more decades into the future. I do believe that [the] fuel-cell vehicle is the ultimate environmentally friendly car.”

But as with EVs, the main drawback to the technology is a lack of infrastructure in place to refuel. There are currently nine fueling stations in California and 13 in place nationwide. And it becomes a battle over which technology deserves more funding. Additionally, while you can charge EVs at home, that’s not possible with hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.

Some experts also dispute whether or not fuel cell technology is good for the environment. Elon Musk said at a conference in Tokyo that since U.S. hydrogen production comes from burning natural gas, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles are indirectly burning fossil fuels.

Akio Toyoda’s response: “There’s a high possibility that there will be many sources of hydrogen in the future, such as solar energy and even waste.”

Undoubtedly, these technologies face challenges for a society still addicted to oil but when these great minds come together, there’s hope that in the future we won’t be focused on fossil fuels. But rather, on modes of transportation that don’t emit planet warming greenhouse gas emissions and don’t involve destroying ecosystems. All in an effort to find a fuel source that beyond being dirty is downright out-of-date.

What do you think? What will your morning commute look like in a few decades? Are you excited about the technology ahead?

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla Motors, has said that the company will remove the patents decorating the walls of its Silicon Valley headquarters. It will not sue anyone who in good faith wants their electric car technology.

According to the Tesla blog, “Technology leadership is not defined by patents, which history has repeatedly shown to be small protection indeed against a determined competitor, but rather by the ability of a company to attract and motivate the world’s most talented engineers. We believe that applying the open source philosophy to our patents will strengthen rather than diminish Tesla’s position in this regard.”

Tesla Motors wants to clear the path for others who want to create a compelling electric car, and patents hinder that goal. The company initially garnered patents because it feared a competitor would copy its ideas and overwhelm the company financially, but that’s been far from the reality, according to Musk.

“We couldn’t have been more wrong. The unfortunate reality is the opposite: electric car programs (or programs for any vehicle that doesn’t burn hydrocarbons) at the major manufacturers are small to non-existent, constituting an average of far less than 1% of their total vehicle sales.”

Musk hopes that other companies will begin to fill the electric car space, though few have tried since he co-founded Tesla Motors a decade ago and became CEO in 2008. Since then, Tesla has unveiled an electric sports car, the Tesla Roadster, a four door Model 5, and a larger Model X, which is scheduled to begin production in 2015. The company also sells its electric powertrain systems to Daimler for the Smart EV and to Mercedes and Toyota for the Rav4 EV.

As Mayor Bill de Blasio works to ban Central Park’s horse drawn carriages, activists have unveiled a model of a vintage antique styled electric car to replace it. It’s called the Horseless ECarriage and it was commissioned by the animal rights group NY Class.

The cars were designed to present the “old world” character of horse drawn carriages sans animal cruelty. The mayor says that the horses are being treated inhumanely. According to NY Class, these 220 horses routinely work 9 hour days on hard pavement, pulling a vehicle that weighs hundreds of pounds. At the end of the day, the horses return to tiny stalls where they’re never afforded any pasture time. In the past two years, 18 accidents have involved horse drawn carriages.

Mayor De Blasio says that if the ban goes into effect, the horses will retire to sanctuaries. Currently, according to NY Class, upon retirement, the horses are transported to Pennsylvania where they are often sold for meat and then slaughtered in Mexico and Canada.

The new horseless carriage will mean that the industry stays afloat, just in a more modernized and less cruel manner. NY Class says that it has partnered with The Creative Workshop in Dania Beach, Florida to design and create fully electric cars that serve as ideal rides for tourists. The cars seat eight passengers and provide “stadium” 360 degree viewing of the city. The cars will travel 5 mph in the park but will be able to keep up to cars in the streets. They’re also all-weather vehicles that tourists will love just the same.

The horse drawn carriage ban has become a heated battle in the city. Actor Liam Neeson put a pro-carriage op-ed in The New York Times. He said, “an entire way of life and a historic industry are under threat. We should ask whether this is the New York we want to live in: a sanitized metropolis, where local color and grit are thrown out in favor of sleek futuristic buildings and careening self-driving cars?” After his op-ed, animal rights activists picketed in front of his New York City apartment. These new vintage electric cars may be just what’s needed to please both parties and say goodbye to horse drawn carriage cruelty.

As a freelancer, I’m used to working pretty much anywhere I can find a plug and a strong WiFi connection. The only place I really can’t work is in the car, which is annoying on long road trips during which I’d love to be able to get some work done. I must not be the only one who feels like travel time could be better spent.

Regus, which operates close to 2,000 business centers around the world, and Rinspeed, a Swiss studio focused on the automotive industry, recently made headlines with a self-driving car that doubles as an on-road office. Revealed at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show, the XchangE features two fronts seats that swivel backwards to create a meeting space for four people. The electric car’s advanced infotainment system would also make it possible for workers to connect to their office and create presentations–which means less panic when you run into a wall of traffic on the way to a big meeting.

Rinspeed’s mobile office concept got us thinking about all the other things that will be possible once the self-driving car becomes reality…

4 More Things You Could Do With A Self-Driving Car

Sleep – Forget those uncomfortable road trips fueled by energy drinks and gut-busting fast food. With a self-driving car, the vacation starts the moment you buckle in. Just pull up a blanket and let the snoring begin.

Read/Study – Never mind those books on tape. When you’re cruising in a self-driving car, you can pore over the pages of your favorite book without slowing down. And if you opted to go that concert instead of studying for your upcoming mid-term, the three-hour trip home in a self-driving car becomes a valuable cramming session.

Put on makeup – Nothing terrifies me more than being stuck in morning rush hour traffic and watching the woman behind me putting on makeup. With a self-driving car, you’d always be able to set the alarm 15 minutes later, and take care of make-up in the car without putting anyone at risk.

Fool around – With no need to keep your hands on the wheel, a self-driving car like the XchangE presents a prime opportunity for some quality snuggle time with your traveling partner. Just swivel those seats around and see what happens. You’re likely to arrive at your destination in a much better mood!

Will hydrogen fuel cell cars eclipse EVs before they’ve even had a chance to go mainstream?

We’ve been waiting for electric vehicles (EVs) to replace gas guzzlers for more than a hundred years. Literally. The first electric motor was installed in a car way back in the 1800s. Yet a deeply entrenched oil and gas industry has kept this technology at bay for decades. Now, at long last, major car manufacturers are releasing plug-in vehicles that are both efficient and somewhat affordable. But the switch to EVs is still taking longer than many anticipated.

Now, some believe that we will never see an electric vehicle revolution, not because the technology isn’t sound, but because it will quickly be made obsolete by something even better: hydrogen fuel cell cars.

A major complaint about electric vehicles (at least among the eco-conscious) is that they’re still dependent on a power grid that runs off fossil fuels. Even though the EVs themselves aren’t belching toxic fumes into the air, their batteries are powered by the same coal-fired and nuclear power plants that fuel our homes. When you consider the entire life-cycle of ownership, they’re not as green as you’d think.

Hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles harvest power from another, much cleaner source. Hydrogen is the simplest and most abundant element in the universe. Instead of a big dirty engine, or heavy battery, hydrogen vehicles have a fuel cell, which converts hydrogen to electricity, giving off only heat and water as byproducts. For a long time, these true zero-emissions vehicles were the stuff of myth and legend in automotive circles, but now, two major car companies are moving to bring hydrogen fuel cell vehicles to market within the next few years. Take a peek.

Hyundai Tucson (pictured above)

According to Hyundai, “The Tucson Fuel Cell represents the next generation of electric vehicles – those that create their own electricity, on-board, from hydrogen.” Unlike many EVs, the Tucson Fuel Cell has a driving range up to 300 miles and is capable of full refueling in under 10 minutes. Starting in Spring 2014, the company plans to lease this next-generation Tucson Fuel Cell vehicle to customers in the Los Angeles/Orange County region for $499 per month, including unlimited free hydrogen refueling and At Your Service Valet Maintenance at no extra cost. That means if something goes wrong, a Hyundai tech will come out to your house to fix it.

“The superior range and fast-fill refueling speed of our Tucson Fuel Cell vehicle contrast with the lower range and slow-charge characteristics of competing battery electric vehicles,” said John Krafcik, president and chief executive officer, Hyundai Motor America, in a press release. “We think fuel cell technology will increase the adoption rate of zero-emission vehicles, and we’ll all share the environmental benefits.”

If you thought 21st century vehicles would look a little bit more like spaceships, Honda’s idea of hydrogen fuel cell cars will be a pleasant surprise. Sleek and riding low to the ground, the Honda FCEV Concept made its world debut at the recent Los Angeles International Auto Show. But don’t let the sports car body fool you, this car also delivers ample passenger space and seating for five passengers thanks to new powertrain packaging efficiencies. Honda has been working on hydrogen fuel cell cars for the better part of a decade, but this is the first concept that has a good chance of making it to market. “The production model that the FCEV inspires will feature the world’s first fuel cell powertrain packaged entirely in the engine area. Not only will this open up more cabin space, it will allow Honda to apply the fuel cell driveline to multiple vehicle formats, should it decide to do so,” reports Gizmag. According to a company press release, Honda’s next-generation fuel-cell vehicle is anticipated to launch in the U.S. and Japan in 2015, followed by Europe.

China’s urban air pollution went off the charts this past winter, and the world took notice. With aggressive policies on the books, is this industrial giant finally admitting that health is more important than production?

In a list of the world’s most polluted nations, China is a shoe-in. An accelerated pace of development–including dozens of new textile mills, rubber and fertilizer plants, oil refineries and coal-fired power plants–has left many of China’s cities covered in a thick blanket of life-choking smog.

In early 2013, Beijing made global headlines when NASA images showed the city almost completely obscured in a cloud of airborne particular visible from space. Residents were urged to wear gas masks and advised to stay indoors as much as possible.

    });

		-->

No nation, especially one so interested in foreign manufacturing contracts, can afford that type of publicity. So, at least at the legislative level, China has recently announced sweeping changes that could clean up the rampant air pollution and go a long way toward creating healthier cities for its residents.

1. Big Investment

In late July, China’s state media announced a government plan to invest 1.7 trillion yuan ($277 billion) to combat air pollution over the next five years. Citing growing social discontent with China’s air quality as a motivating factor, a government report laid out plans to reduce air emissions by 25 percent by 2017 compared with 2012 levels, especially focusing on urban areas like Beijing.

2. Gasoline Tax

People complain about expensive gas the world over, as if cheap fossil fuels were some kind of human right. They’re not. In fact, countries like America use taxpayer dollars to dish up deep subsidies to Big Oil and Coal. These subsidies are some of the only reasons our gas prices have been so much lower than the rest of the world’s for decades. If people had to pay the true price of gas, they’d probably stop driving so much.

That’s the assumption that led China’s government to unveil a fuel pollution tax that will be added to standard gas prices sometime in the next 12 months. Under current tax law, a liter of gas (about a third of a gallon) is around 8 yuan or $1.30. When the pollution tax is added, a liter of gas will cost ten yuan, or $1.62. This brings it up to about $4.50 a gallon. If this pollution tax is successful in Beijing, the government plans to implement it across the country.

3. Electric Vehicles

As America has so willingly demonstrated, it’s not easy to get a nation of oil-addicted drivers to make the switch to greener vehicles. We like our big engines and our independence. China is the same way, only they have 1.35 billion people to the USA’s 316 million. To help ease the pain of transitioning away from fossil fuels, China’s Ministry of Science and Technology’s (MOST) announced a Five-Year Plan for Electric Vehicles, actively encouraging its citizens to buy electric bikes, scooters, and cars. The nation is targeting 5 million EVs and PHEVs on the road by 2020, although progress has been slower than desired.

Think a luxurious vehicle and an eco-friendly lifestyle are mutually exclusive? Think again. The Tesla Model S is just one of a growing number of dream cars that deliver zero-emission performance.

For many generations, the automobile represented America’s lust for independence, self-expression, and yes, wealth. Back in the 1950’s and ’60’s, no one was thinking about carbon emissions or dependence on fossil fuels. All we wanted was a shiny paint job, a big engine, and to feel the wind in our hair as we sped off into the sunset.

Some of us still want these things, but knowledge of what those gas-guzzling engines do to the planet keeps us from indulging. We choose tiny cars that get much better gas mileage, or perhaps we opt to bike or walk whenever possible. But what if it were possible to feel the thrill of screaming down the highway without leaving a trail of pollution behind you? The Tesla Model S, one of the most popular all-electric cars to hit the U.S. market, and the four other dream cars on this list, make it possible.

1. Tesla Model S

The Tesla Model S offers two battery size options, with the biggest capable of supplying 300 miles of travel at 55 mph. But who wants to go 55? Top speed for the Tesla Model S is around 130 mph (not your average electric car, eh?). The average annual fuel cost for comparable gas-powered dream cars is over $5,000–the Tesla costs about $934. And have we mentioned it’s stunning to look at?

2. BMW i3

The latest to appear on the all-electric luxury car scene, the BMW i3 was only unveiled a few weeks ago. And while it is a hatchback, it still lives up to BMW’s high standards for aesthetic appeal and performance. “The car is designed to go from zero to 60 miles per hour (mph) in 7 seconds, up to top speeds of 93 mph,” reports Green Biz. About 25 percent of the plastics in the interior and 25 percent of the thermoplastics parts on the exterior were sourced from recycled materials or renewable sources, says BMW. The i3 will hit showrooms in the U.S. in spring 2014.

3. Fisker Karma

The Fisker Karma was one of the first brands to prove that you can have luxury and performance while eliminating carbon emissions. It features a “a very respectable 403 horsepower coupled with a jaw dropping 951 lb-ft of torque” which delivers “a zero-to-60 time of 7.9 seconds and a 95 mile per hour top speed – in electric-only “Stealth Mode,” according to Left Land News. The Karma offered it all, and many had high hopes for the brand. Unfortunately, the company has experienced money troubles in the past year, and some fear it will fold. Silver lining: the once $100,000 car can now be scooped up for about half the price.

4. Venturi America

Venturi calls the America a “high-riding sports car,” and with impressive ground clearance and a dune-buggy like appearance it’s not hard to see why. The valet will never bottom out when parking this two passenger beauty. “Powered by a 53 kWh lithium-ion polymer battery, the America has a driving a range of around 186 miles (presumably in Cruising mode) with a top speed of 124 miles per hour,” reports Autoblog. The bad news? Venturi is only making 100 of these door-less electric enduro cars, and in an ironic twist, none of will be sold in the U.S.

5. Rimac Concept One

Developed by a Croatian company called Rimac Automobili, the Concept One is meant to destroy our assumptions about how dream cars operate. The Concept One uses a set of four electric motors, one for each wheel, which allow the car to go from 0 to 60 mph in only 2.8 seconds, not topping out until about 190 mph. The interior, designed by the leather-specialists from Vilner, makes you feel like you’re in a well-appointed space ship, right down to the high-tech dials and ergonomic, hand-tailored seats.

The company, based surprisingly in Horn Lake, Mississippi, specializes in tiny, all-electric vehicles known as the MyCar.
Through a recently announced partnership with Shanghai’s JAC Motors, GreenTech will soon offer an all-electric vehicle featuring a 19kwh battery with the ability to drive more than 100 miles on a single charge, with a charge time of just 6-8 hours. The sedan will feature JAC’s award-winning Rejoice vehicle platform with GTA’s advanced electric powertrain and battery management system, delivering zero-emissions travel at a size and price America can live with.

This announcement is good news for drivers, the environment, and perhaps most importantly, the local economy. GTA will assemble the vehicles in its Mississippi facility for distribution in North America exclusively beginning in late 2013.

“The MyCar, which offers consumers a fun, affordable driving experience, is already seeing strong response, achieving distribution agreements for the sale of more than 30,000 units over the next three years. The JAC-GTA partnership allows us to expand our product line-up with a sedan and allows us to offer the GTA technology with great amenities and room for five passengers while adhering to our philosophy of being price competitive,” said Marianne McInerney, Executive VP of sales and marketing, for GTA.

After a pilot assembly of 2,000 vehicles, GTA plans to establish another assembly facility for the sedan and expects to create 200 additional jobs in the United States. Since most of us have depended on Asia and Europe to supply our vehicles for the better part of the last century, this is a refreshing twist. Once again America will be making something that’s desperately needed here at home.
