And it should. Most cosmetics out there are dangerous to eat, and the fact that we automatically pair them with artificiality is only testament to how ingrained toxic beauty products are in the market and hence, in our lives. We were raised on the notion of cosmetics being good enough for the outside, but not for the inside. But with the skin absorbing 60 percent of what’s put on it, haven’t we been ingesting our beauty products all along?

While there are plenty of natural, organic beauty products on the market, nothing beats the quality, care, and conscientiousness of homemade versions. The following beetroot lip gloss recipe is sensational. It not only infuses your lips with all-natural, vegetable-based pigments, but also leaves your pucker moisturized, glistening, and lip-smackin’ delicious!

Beetroot Lip Gloss Recipe

Makes 40 ml

Ingredients

• ½ teaspoon beeswax
• 1 teaspoon coconut oil
• 3 teaspoons castor oil
• 2 teaspoons jojoba oil
• A few drops vitamin E oil
• ½ teaspoon vegetable glycerin
• 1 teaspoon beetroot powder

Directions

Stir the beeswax, coconut oil, castor oil, jojoba oil, and vitamin E oil in a saucepan over low heat. Remove the saucepan from the heat once the oils have melted. Let cool, while occasionally stirring.

Meanwhile, combine the vegetable glycerin and beetroot powder together in a separate small bowl. Once evenly combined, whisk the beetroot powder mixture into the saucepan mixture until smooth and viscous. Let cool.

Spoon into small 10-ml plastic jars. Seal with a lid and carry with you and use as needed.

Considering the toxic ingredients sneaking around in over-the-counter cosmetics, it’s no wonder that homemade makeup is rising in popularity. And lip balm is an excellent, super-easy to make treat for your lips and wallet, too!

Making our own homemade lip balm is far easier than you think. With just a few easy-to-find ingredients, you are less than an hour away from a personalized lip balm that will soften, nourish and shine your lips to luscious perfection. Pucker up!

This basic recipe for homemade lip balm includes coconut oil, beeswax and shea butter. Coconut oil and shea butter are exceptional moisturizers and beeswax can help to prevent infections and cold sores. With the addition of essential oils, such as vanilla or lavender, you have yourself a lip balm that both tastes, smells and feels unlike any other. And it is pure, authentic and truly individualized for you.

Basic Recipe for Homemade Lip Balm

Makes about 15 small lip-balm containers

Ingredients

• 1/2 coconut oil
• 1/2 cup grated beeswax or beeswax pellets
• 1/2 cup shea butter
• 10-15 drops of essential oils, or a combination of your favorite
• Dropper
• About 15 small, lip-balm size containers

Instructions

Add the beeswax to a saucepan or double boiler over low heat, and once melted, add the coconut oil and sea butter. Let remain over the heat until all is melted, stirring occasionally. Once melted and evenly combined, remove the pan from the stove and stir in the essential oils. Separate the mixture among the containers and let sit for about 30 minutes at room temperature before putting on the lids.
