The now 55-year-old actress explained that when she first met the couple who introduced her to the lifestyle, she thought they were simply personal trainers.

“They were very controlling,” said Pfeiffer, and the relationship quickly soured.

“I wasn’t living with them but I was there a lot and they were always telling me I needed to come more. I had to pay for all the time I was there, so it was very financially draining.”

The breatharian philosophy held that food was unnecessary and that people should rely solely on air and sunlight for their nutrients.

Pfeiffer was finally able to break away from the cult when she began dating her first husband, Peter Horton, who was about to begin filming a movie about cults.

After helping Horton with his research, she said “it just clicked.” That was when Pfeiffer realized the group she followed was a cult and immediately began to get out.

Film as a vehicle to get conscious messages to the masses? Ticket please.

We were so excited this week to get an EcoSalon exclusive with photographer Ben Canales on his “Finding Oregon” time lapse. In Finding Oregon: An Exclusive Look at A Stunning Nature Timelapse, we get respite from our everyday, overloaded, technology-dependent lives and a reminder of the natural rhythms to which we have almost become unaccustomed.

Truck Farm is a great film that hits on the themes that we so often discuss when it comes to food: thinking about where our food comes from, the importance of reconnecting to what we eat, building community and being part of an underground movement that feels empowered to make change. A garden growing in the back of a truck? Yup. it turned lots of heads.

Miss Representation is a documentary that explores the misrepresentation of women in culture and media and how that influences the under representation of women in other realms, like politics and business. We caught up with the film’s writer and producer, Jennifer Siebel Newsom to see what drove her to put this film together (and we were more than inspired).

We’ve covered Annie Leonard’s The Story of Stuff a few times but loved getting an interview with her recently. Why did Leonard feel the passion to do do what she does? The Staten Island dump, Pacific Northwestern clear cuts and planned obsolescence are three but in The Story of Stuff: A Conversation with Annie Leonard, we learn a few reasons more.

Want to see a good way to make a point? Maybe you should take heed and handle an uncomfortable situation like Michelle Pfeiffer’s Catwoman. Because really, when is kicking ass then back-flipping out of a situation not the best way to make an exit? Our weekly series of Women in Film takes a theatrical look at just how you do channel your alpha female (cat).

Michelle Pfeiffer’s Catwoman reminds us of the best way to make a statement – and an exit.

Many of us fantasize about our dream comebacks.

Here’s one: Say there’s ketchup gracing your upper lip because of an essential meeting with French fries during your lunch hour. You return to the office and someone notices the dried red condiment just under your nose and makes a snarky comment, like “Don’t you know how to eat?” Before you sink into a deep depression from failing at something so natural, like eating and wiping your mouth, you do some quick, grease-fueled thinking. “Yes, I know how to eat,” you offer before slinking off to see if there are any cold fries left in your office trash can.

Not a strong comeback for you.

Maybe you should take heed and handle an uncomfortable situation like Michelle Pfeiffer’s Catwoman. Because really, when is kicking ass then back-flipping out of a situation not the best way to make an exit?

To many Gen Xers, “Batman Returns” remains one of the best childhood realizations of strong womanhood. The Tim Burton-helmed film came out in 1992, giving Third Wave Feminists a whole new ideal of sass. I still have a miniature Catwoman figurine climbing a string tied to the corner of my desk, where she remains an iconographic reminder of how one might behave in a situation calling for drop kicks. She’s also a good remember that a snappy, well-crafted comeback really just needs the right amount of confidence. Granted, Catwoman’s confidence comes from a lunacy inspired by a drop off a skyscraper, but now we’re just splitting cat hairs, right?

For further lessons in psychotic feline behavior, check out how Catwoman cleans out her wardrobe. Goes on a date. And quits her job.
