Dear Mr. Zuckerberg,

Last Thursday, I awoke to find that our health and wellness website, OrganicAuthority.com, was blocked from Facebook without warning or notice about whatever rule it is we violated. It was almost as if our website never existed. Not a single trace of the site could be found. Our Facebook page was whittled down to images we’d posted without links to our site, and the content of other sites we’d shared.

Like any tech-savvy company, we checked from other browsers. Our smart phones. We waited in hopes that it was just an infamous Facebook “glitch.” But the waiting was in vain as the hours ticked by and still no change. We had vanished from Facebook.

As a web-only magazine, Facebook is our lifeblood–a direct contact to many of our readers. We’ve been on the platform for well over six years now and we strive to follow your policies, play fair, and be a good corporate Facebook citizen. We spend money every single month on ads to extend our reach and drive engagement in what we think helps to build a better community. We invest in creating high-quality content month after month to support and nurture our ever-expanding Facebook community.

Like many other small businesses, we supported you in your early days, when big brands and media laughed at you. While we’re by no means the biggest site on the platform, we take pride in knowing that even our tiny drop in the bucket helped build your brand. We send our audience to your platform daily to not only help build Facebook, but to also make the world a more connected and inspired place. When our content goes viral on Facebook, we know we’re making a difference in countless lives.

We’ve adapted to the ever-changing Facebook policies and algorithms that you claim improve the quality of the content and the overall Facebook experience for both brands and the communities they target. But yet, you don’t seem to return the love to those who help to build your platform. You respond by reducing organic reach year after year. You routinely suppress trending news stories you don’t support, and then, you shut sites down, too. Without warning.

You shut down Maria Kang, an obsessed fitness mom-of-three, for expressing her voice on the current state of obesity in America, deemed it hate speech, and blocked her access to Facebook. And now you’ve done it to us (and who knows how many more).

In fact, you’re becoming rather infamous for your censorship. You don’t seem to like photos of plus-sized women on Facebook (or Instagram), you’ve routinely taken them down, too. You have a long history of censoring breastfeeding mothers. And what about sex education? You don’t seem to support that either. You’ve even censored Matt Orfalea’s video of PBS censoring Green Candidate Dr. Jill Stein’s criticism of Hillary Clinton, the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), and Obamacare. The list goes on of who and what you’ve censored, including journalists, artists, LGBTQ groups, and more.

Yes, Facebook, for some reason you’ve blocked our small health and wellness website, OrganicAuthority.com, from posting delicious recipes made from scratch, DIY home and garden, content, nutrition, wellness and fitness tips, and important food and environmental news that help to create a safer food system and environment for everyone. Even you, Mr. Zuckerberg.

And not only are we very sad, our fans our sad. In fact, it was our fans that alerted us to the problem. Here’s what some of them had to say:

Earlier this year, I was thrilled when you assigned us a Facebook account manager for our ads. It helped us boost our reach and best utilize your platform. But then, you took him away, too.

When we discovered our site was blocked, our former account manager kindly referred me to this page: http://www.facebook.com/business/resources, where we used to be able to chat with live help, but then you took that service away, too. Now, in order to get help, it is nearly impossible! I have to dig through page after page to find out where I can contact someone–anyone!– at Facebook to get help. I’ve submitted several requests including an appeal via this page and other avenues, but I haven’t heard a peep since our site was banned some time last Wednesday evening or early Thursday morning. I even posted a question to your Facebook business page. Still no response.

It’s sad that a company as big as Facebook– and so critical to moving us into the technological age–doesn’t value it’s paying customers. We thought we were in this together.

How can you be an Internet company focused on communication and community-building without a clear communication system for your paying customers? May I suggest you take a page out of Zappos’ book on how to deliver a world class customer experience?

I can only assume that if we were BuzzFeed or another large brand, this would not have happened without warning or explanation; there would be some sort of recourse. Not giving a paying customer, no matter how small, the courtesy of an explanation, or a chance to correct any error we may have made, is downright mean, and dare I say UnAmerican. These tactics are arrogant. They stink like the behavior of a bully. The behavior assumes that you, Facebook, are 100 percent correct in your decision to block our site, in what was most likely a technical error. I’ve experienced this before, having ads rejected only to be told by a Facebook customer service rep that the system made a mistake, “that shouldn’t happen.”

As two digital companies living in the technology age we all need one another to thrive and survive. In fact, the digital landscape thrives on collaboration and connections. You couldn’t survive without your billions of users or the brands that spend billions of dollars to advertise. Can’t we at least have a more humane system of flagging content or sites before just hitting the delete button?

Blocking us could have a chilling effect; it certainly affects our bottom line. We are a small, self-funded and boot-strapped independent publisher that isn’t backed by big VC dollars like many other sites in today’s market. We bring a unique, independent voice that’s helping change our food system and empowering your users to take control of their health and feel good about doing it.

We invest in Facebook to help drive traffic to our website, drive revenue, and create jobs. This type of loss in traffic could very well force us to have to let people go. Inaction on your part and an absent path to recourse will affect more than our brand, it will affect people’s lives.

But banning us not only hurts our brand, it’s hurting your brand, too. Users are losing trust in Facebook, calling this blatant censorship and a violation of our First Amendment rights.

We posted a note to our fan page letting our followers know what’s happened and here’s what some of them have to say:

To see all of the comments go to our Facebook page and click on the post published Friday August 26th at 11:25 am PST, (an aptly sad emoji with a tear). There are even more comments on our second post from Sunday August 28th at 3:33pm (also the sad emoji, because this is sad!).

Facebook, this sucks. We’re hopeful that your system once again made an error and this isn’t a draconian slight to small publishers and businesses. We admit it, we need you. And we sure hope you realize you need us, too.

In Good Health,

The bathroom mirror shot. The silhouette. The beach shot. The one where you try to make it look like someone else took it. How many Facebook ‘selfie’ photos do you post? And what do they say about your personality?

It’s closing in on a decade since Facebook changed our modern culture. We were swept up into the nonstop world of updates, profile pages, and deciding whether or not to air our relationship status for the whole world to see. And of course, arguably the most important aspect of Facebook: which pictures of ourselves we flaunt.

Our enthusiasm was warranted, initially. After all, in just a decade we went from a time when a phone was just that—a device to make phone calls with—to it becoming a tool that allows us to read books, make videos and find the closest Hooters location, as well as the occasional, but now less necessary, phone call. And its most seemingly vital function: the Facebook tether.

That’s progress all right, and it’s made us all a little giddy. It is nice to skim through pics of old classmates and family members you haven’t seen in years. But has Facebook (and other social networks) made us all narcissists? Or is our obsession with the selfie photo just a passing phase as we adjust to living out loud via social media?

The long-range effects of social media are still yet to be determined. But one thing’s for sure, it’s going to be quite a ride. In the meantime, though, what exactly does the selfie pic say about you? Any of these ring true?

You’re kind of a loser: According to a recent study out of the U.K., “oversharing” of Facebook selfies could actually damage your relationships in the real-world, the Huffington Post reports. “[B]oth excessive photo sharing and sharing photos of a certain type makes almost everyone like you less.”

Most people don’t relate to you: The researchers found that aside from your very close friends and relatives, excessive photo sharing, particularly of your own face, isn’t relatable for most people. “Increased frequency of sharing photographs of the self, regardless of the type of target sharing the photographs, is related to a decrease in intimacy,” the researchers noted in the study. The excessive amount of photos of yourself make it awkward for people who don’t actually know you all that well—and most Facebook users have a significant amount of “friends” who are, more or less, not really friends.

You’re desperately insecure: Building a reputation (with strangers and the closest of friends) is what most people taking the selfie photos are after—the (perceived) intimacy, the cloying compliments, the appearance of themselves they want to put forth in the world—drive the need to be seen. But it also makes it obvious to everyone else just how needy you are.

You’re a narcissist: The insecurities, body image issues and the increasingly more detrimental condition of Facebook jealousy, makes us look at someone else’s selfie and assume they have a better life than we do. But since that reality’s too difficult for most people to accept, they instead focus on how awesome they are and the narcissist spiral sucks them in. They begin to find every little thing they do valuable to their online community, oversharing updates and pics.

You’re lonely: Loneliness will make us do weird things, and the obsession with Facebook selfies is a bit like adjusting your outfit or hair half a dozen times while you sit alone at a bar trying not to look lonely. Subtly or not, people pick up on the vibe and it can be a turn off as the line between loneliness and desperation is incredibly thin.

You’re drunk: Drunk people do stupid things in the real world and often even far dumber moves on Facebook. Then, one of the other more common justifications sink in the next day…the narcissism, the loneliness, etc, and folks justify keeping the drunken images up, or opt for new ones altogether.

You’re neurotic: Some people obsessively post the Facebook selfie pics simply because they’re neurotic. Is this pic better? What about this pic? I haven’t changed my pics in a while, is that bad? There’s a reason Woody Allen makes movies and stays out of the public eye the rest of the time. Neuroses are annoying, even when you can simply scroll right past them.

So, what’s a healthy balance?

Of course we should share fun times and great photos whenever we feel like it. Not every selfie image is going to mean something is wrong with you. But try to recognize when you’re ‘oversharing’ versus legitimately changing your profile pic or sharing a photo of you with President Obama. Be judicious. And most of all, be present in the real world. Sometimes, an experience is most rewarding when you’re just fully immersed in it, not trying to capture it for someone else to see.

Facebook is a financial juggernaut that claims to be committed to a clean energy future, but the discovery of a Zuckerberg-funded SuperPac promoting the world’s filthiest fossil fuels has the Internet crying foul.

We don’t feel it or see it as we’re surfing the web or clicking “Like” on cat memes, but the internet generates a lot of pollution. See, the internet lives on giant electricity-sucking servers housed in climate-controlled data centers all over the world. The bigger the website, the more servers it takes to keep it up and running.

Facebook is one of the world’s most heavily trafficked sites, so naturally, it’s got more servers than just about anyone else. In 2011, in response to Greenpeace’s popular “Unfriend Coal” campaign, the social media giant agreed to promote renewable energy, encourage major utilities to develop renewable energy generation, and develop programs that will enable users to save energy and engage their communities in clean energy decisions.

Recognizing the beginnings of this quasi-addiction prompted Adams to create her new book, The Facebook Diet, a collection of humorous depictions of social media addiction. With 28 percent of Facebook users admitting to checking their profile before they even get out of bed, many are probably more familiar with Adams’ drawings than they’d like to admit.

While the content is intended to be amusing, the book tackles one of the more pressing issues of modern times: technology addiction and the inability of many users to unplug. Adams, an avid yoga practitioner, talks often about being ‘present’ in any given task or moment—something which the constant stream of information available on the internet runs in direct opposition to.

“I think that as a society it’s so necessary for us to be living in the digital world: news magazines are going digital, kids are using tablets in school etc,” Adams said. “But when you’re on a digital device you’ve got so many things out there that are distractions and if you don’t have any self control or you haven’t been taught how to practice being present then I think that creates a serious problem.”

A Neilson report on social media last year found that Americans spend 23 percent of their online lives on Facebook and other social networks. Despite this huge time investment, Adams’ point isn’t that social media is an evil, all-consuming force that healthy people should eschew altogether. On the contrary, it’s a useful tool and, for a growing number of people, an integral part of professional lives. Instead, she advocates practicing restraint in various ways.

“Building an awareness of why you’re using social media is the most important thing,” Adams said. “Creating set spaces where you are completely disconnected and sticking to them is important. Having a schedule—swimming, running, or even watching a movie—makes us conscious of the amount of time we’re being forced to interact with computers.”

With increasing rates of ADHD, shortened attention spans in children, and physical side effects from sitting hunched over all day, Adams is part of a growing group that are urging people to go on a ‘digital detox.’ The non-profit Reboot has promoted National Day of Unplugging—inspired by the Jewish Sabbath—since 2010. Many prominent writers are pointing out the value of taking one day per week away from technology. Not responding to email of any kind when you’re on vacation or a weekend away—once a risky move—is now more accepted.

To help with the transition, Apps and software such as Mac Freedom, which dis-enables your internet for set intervals of time so you can focus on creating, and Self Control, which blocks particularly distracting sites, are good tools. And of course, says Adams, there is always the option of leaving your smart phone at home from time to time.

For Adams, creating a book about technology turned out to be a way to get away from the technology that she felt was lessening her quality of life. She encourages others to pick up old fashioned habits—writing long-hand, reading a print book—in order to do the same.

“I was so sick of sitting at the computer,” Adams said. “I wanted that tangible experience of creating. So doing this book allowed me to go out and do research, talk to people, go experience the world, go and draw and have a really tangible rather than digital addiction.”

Getting social with the animals.

If you’re anything like us, there are definitely days when you’d prefer to socialize with members of non-human species over those of your own. The new Meet Your Planet social app from BBC Earth is perhaps the best way to do that, save for heading out in to the bush, jungle, or tundra.

With hundreds of clips from shows like Planet Earth and Frozen Planet, stunning photographs, and behind the scenes interviews with the BBC Earth crew (who really do have one of the coolest jobs on earth), the creators of the app hope to bring the wonder of the natural world into our everyday lives by being a part of the social network we use most.

      googletag.display("div-gpt-ad-1430927735854-0");
      googletag.pubads().refresh([adslot4]);
    });

You can interact with your Facebook friends using the app by inviting them to join and see what you’re watching, use the “aww” and “eek” functions to display your emotional reaction (it’s okay, we all do the former when this polar bear’s cubs are born), search for specific content or surprise yourself with the “inspire me” feature.

While the content is of course suitable for work, we don’t recommend viewing it at the office if you want to get any actual work done. The daily exploits of lions and jelly fish and baboons tend to be distracting.

Sustainable change begins with a little fashion education.

If becoming an eco-friendly consumer were as easy as simply making good decisions and sticking to them, we’d all shop exclusively at upcycled mom-and-pop boutiques and munch solely on family-farm grown produce. Unfortunately, your desires aren’t always sustainable, or even sane. Sometimes Cheez Whiz calls to you. So do polyester blouses from Forever 21.

Luckily, a new retail tech start-up called Fashioning Change aims to streamline the process of fulfilling our retail desires a little more sustainably. Launched in November of 2011 – appropriately enough, on Cyber Monday – the company takes an entirely new approach to online shopping by recommending stylish, yet eco-friendly goods and services as alternatives to the mass-produced brands that you always gravitate towards.

How does this miracle happen? First, you log into the website with either your Facebook account or e-mail address and customize your personal profile through a series of questions. If you’ve logged in with Facebook – which CEO and Founder Adriana Herrera recommends, in order to access Fashioning Change’s full benefits – the company pulls your “Likes,” dislikes and various organizations you support. “Say you or a friend supports Human Rights Watch,” Herrera explained, “we will highlight products that are involved with helping survivors of human trafficking.”

Plenty of companies, both online and brick-and-mortar, purport to sell exclusively sustainable goods. However, Fashioning Change’s criteria for selecting brands are particularly stringent. For example, every brand must have a transparent supply chain, use fair trade principles and protect human rights. And unlike many other boutiques, sustainable or not, the company offers a full range of price points for every kind of shopper, for those who shop exclusively at affordable fast fashion stores to those who collect high-priced luxury items.

I signed up for Fashioning Change to check it out, selecting a number of both affordable and high-end brands to see what the company recommended. In the past week, the “Wear This, Not That” application suggested a Greenpacha panama hat as an alternative to J. Crew’s, and a silk georgette Carrie Parry blouse as an alternative to a Chloe one. While neither the Chloe nor the Carrie Parry blouse are precisely within my price range, both of the sustainable alternatives look remarkably similar to the original item, and I’ve bookmarked Greenpacha – whose hats are handmade in Ecuador and donate 2% of their sales – for any future sun-shading needs. A rotating bevy of guest stylists also assemble sample looks for specific occasions.

This Fashioning Change look was curated by sustainable fashion writer Stare Vartan

Herrera, a San Diego native, came up with the idea for Fashioning Change after realizing that being a great, eco-conscious designer doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re a great marketer. Contrary to popular belief, there is an ample selection of affordable, sustainable brands. It’s just difficult to find them. Or, more specifically, it’s difficult to find brands you might like.

It takes most of us years to discover that Levi’s or Cheap Monday has the best jeans to suit our figure. Now we have to find those particular jeans, but manufactured responsibly as well? Almost impossible.

Herrera decided to harness the power of social media to link ethical shoppers, brands they like, and causes they support.

“The shopping habits of my generation, and younger ones, are driven by different variables than that of previous generations,” she said. “Media outlets, from NPR to Forbes, to high fashion magazines like Vogue and W are all covering topics on social responsibility, CSR, and eco-friendly and ethical fashion production.”

While Adriana might be the current face of Fashioning Change, she’s not running the venture alone. While she was working on teaching herself code in a shared work space, she met Fashioning Change’s co-founder Kevin Ball who was working for Causes.com and using his passion for social good. This early interaction led to the beginnings of Fashioning Change and what you see today.

If the twentieth century was one of remarkable technological advancements – from horse-and-buggy at the start of the century, to the internet at the end of it – then the twenty-first might be the age of behavioral modification. Companies that can bring about tiny tweaks in behavior, from the way we eat to the way we talk to each other, can bring about massive changes.

Like Instagram, Twitter and other social networking concepts, Fashioning Change seems positioned to become just that change we need. Earning money is hard enough. We shouldn’t have to struggle so hard to figure out how to consciously spend it when we do need something new.

Stay tuned for our launch later today with Fashioning Change!! EcoSalon will be featuring a daily “Wear This Not That” from them to keep you on a sustainable fashion track daily. Fashion with a conscience? Hell yes.
