Thanks to few wonderfully wearable trends, and some surprisingly sustainable twists, fall fashion has never looked so good (or been so ethical).

Autumn is closing in, which means it’s time to start thinking about your seasonal wardrobe. (Can I getta hells yes for sweater weather?!) And if you’re anything like me, then you may have actually been fantasizing about all of the cute outfits you’ve been wanting to put together since, well, the hottest month of the year. We southernmost folks generally like to throw in the proverbial towel, completely sweat-soaked, by the way, during the month of August. To say I’m excited for a little reprieve from the heat would be an understatement. Fortunately, this post is dedicated to all things fall fashion and is designed to help us all look toward the brighter (and cooler) aspects of the season.

When it comes to fashion, one great thing about the changing of the seasons are the new trends that follow suit. NYFW is the mecca of all things stylish, especially when it comes to setting the stage for what retailers will be carrying and your favorite fashion icons will be wearing. However, if you’re a diehard EcoSalon fan, which I know you are, then you’ve probably learned by now from reading so many entertaining and informative articles that fast fashion is bad for all parties involved. Luckily, you can still follow trends and be good to humanity, because I’ve brought you coverage of some of this autumn’s most fashion-tastic trends, each with their own little sustainable twist.

1. Cold Shoulder

You haven’t seen the last of this trend yet! Although it might seem counterintuitive to the cooler weather that’s soon approaching, baring your shoulders is a fall fashion statement that’s sticking around through the season. The secret to pulling off this universally flattering trend is in warmer knits and thoughtful layering. Fortunately for us, this strikingly beautiful, two-tone Pamela poncho from Anita Arze is as socially responsible as it is stylish. High rise jeans are back with a vengeance – but you know, in a good way.

There’s no in-between: You either love high rise jeans, or you have no idea how to feel about them. Up until recently, I’ve always been perplexed by the look and remember saying to my mom as a kid, “Why are your pants up to your neck? How are you breathing right now?” (Meanwhile, this was the ’90s and I was probably wearing something equally as perplexing.) There are oodles of fall shoe trends coming your way – here’s a highlight reel of the big four.

Can you believe it’s fall already? While I’m sure you’re secretly pouting about having to put away your most adored sandals for another season, it’s time to turn that frown upside down and focus your attention on the fall shoe trends you’re going to be sporting in T-minus… well, however long it takes you to read this article.
Because the fugly shoe trend left me practically catatonic, I thought it best to emotionally prepare for the upcoming shoe trends we’re going to be seeing. To do so, I enlisted the help of Meghan Cleary, America’s shoe expert and author of “Shoe Are You?” to boldly go where our feet have never gone before.

Here are the top 4 fall shoe trends you’re going to fall in love with – and sample kicks to get your collection started (don’t mention it):

1. Black pump stilettos

“The fall is going to be a cornucopia of shoe trends,” says Cleary, and one style of kicks that’s going to be making a serious comeback is the basic black pump (peep or closed toe). (Pssst… If you want to make the most of your high heel experience, Cleary’s free handbook “Shoe Are You? How to Be Unstoppable in Your Stilettos” is a must-read!).

I say, make like Liz Gilbert and take your wardrobe on a journey of re-evaluation. By adding one item, harem pants – the trousers of the season – you can update your existing pieces and create looks that are perfect to eat, pray and love in.

This latest trouser trend first showed up on Alexander Wang’s spring 2009 catwalk in the form of cuffed and cropped, grey marl sweatpants. And while I can hear your collective shriek of horror from all the way out here in San Francisco, the harem pants, and their many sisters that include the carrot leg, draped and drop crotch, are the fashion equivalent of sweatpants. Except, crucially, they’re much, much sexier. As Ms. Gilbert would agree, taking a fashion risk means sometimes traveling outside your comfort zone. This throw-caution-to-the-wind silhouette is roomy, free-spirited and exotic.

Now I’ve stopped you from rushing into a rebound romance with a whole new set of clothes – that will predictably end up looking just like your old things – here are some tips to ensure your fashion evolution is one women everywhere end up relating to, over, say, Mr. Ali Baba.

Eat. After seasons of skinny pants you finally have a bit more room for the carbs you left behind. Harem pants are incredibly comfortable, but don’t get too comfortable. Keep the waist defined and whatever you wear on top fitting snugly. Same goes with the luggage, a small neat purse works best.

Pray. It’s a truly tricky look to attempt, one that has serious potential for sending you into a corner praying that you hadn’t. Meditate on the oneness of this fashion affirmation, no further style statements necessary. Try neutral colors, no glitz and minimal jewelry only.

Love. If  you decide that celibacy isn’t much of an option after all, it’s essential to opt for a not too-low crotch in these pants. Even the word saggy, is decidedly unsexy – don’t you think? To keep that sexy up you might wear high heels with this look, unless of course like Ms. Gilbert, you know that in fashion, like life, rules are there to be broken!

As we hurtle towards Labor Day, the sweaty summer season is only going to get well, sweatier. Here at EcoSalon, we’ve given you wardrobe and make up ideas to beat the heat, but how about some tips to tame your tendrils?

There has been a notable anti-straightening iron movement for the past few years in hair in favor of more natural-looking textures. The loose and beachy waves du jour are the perfect accessory to summer’s carefree looks, but when it gets truly hot and sticky out there, even the most perfect waves experience wipeout.

It’s tempting to want to chop it all off. But there’s an undeniable predilection for repunzel-like long locks right now. Thanks to layered cuts that add movement and volume to longer hair and celebrities, like Demi Moore, turning the ridiculous notion of age-appropriate hair length on its head, hair that reaches the mid-back is beautiful for all.

If you’re determined to remain sane and hang on to your mane in this summer’s epic battle of hair versus humidity, how about trying herringbone or fishtail braids – a sophisticated, on-trend solution to keeping your hair out of your face.

There are lots of tutorials on how to do fishtail braids online, I liked this sexily-voiced one. The trick to keeping the effect cool girl – not school girl – is to wear them deliberately loose and messy, teasing out volume on top and a few strands to frame your face.

A side swept style complements every face shape by helping to offset unsymmetrical features. A deep, statement making, retro part will perform the same trick. For a finished look, pull a piece of hair from the underside of the tail and wrap it around the elastic as many times as you can, securing it with a bobby pin or adorn jauntily with eco hair accessories.

I’ll attest to finding it a bit fiddly at first – it’s one of those things that gets easier with practice, which is just as well because come fall, those braids are getting decidedly more polished (check out hair guru Orlando Pita’s guide to creating Doo Ri’s fall catwalk look seen above) along with a return to sleeker hair textures.

It seems that fashion’s frisky self-referential cycle has become so short that even the pin straight hair of the mid-nineties, straightened then to accompany Tom Ford’s seventies redux, is now considered vintage and ripe for reinterpretation.  So before you arm up with your straightening arsenal – dryer, irons, paddle brush – dressed in high-waisted flared pants and once again wrestle your locks into long, straight, face drapes à la Jerry Hall (pre Mick), it’s time to embrace your natural texture, twisted, twirled and braided into summer’s hottest trend, tended tendrils.
