ColumnBreaking news: This week’s post isn’t depressing, or infuriating. In fact, it’s downright positive.

We all know the 2016 Oscars were a bit… white. And thanks to Chris Rock’s monologue, anyone who was within earshot of a television or radio in the past week knows just how white Oscar was in 2016.

Well, in addition to being diverse-phobic, the Oscars also, at first glance, seemed to be clueless about women’s needs. According to Refinery29, the Oscars seemingly didn’t provide a place — other than restrooms — for women to comfortably breastfeed. The news that turned out to be false, thankfully, was made public when a Los Angeles Times reporter saw actor Tom Hardy in the lobby during the award show. When asked what he was up to, Hardy said, “I’m just waiting for my wife to finish breast-pumping in the bathroom. She has to do it every hour.”

Well, it turns out that Oscar did have a few places for breastfeeding women to feed or pump comfortably and discreetly other than the bathrooms. According to an Academy letter that was sent to Refinery29, the Oscars ceremony had “a nurse on site and a private area set aside for this purpose. Discretion does not permit us to elaborate further other than to say that our talent department goes to great lengths to tailor each mom’s experience to fit her specific needs.”

While we were initially going to write about this bit of news to shame the Oscars, we’re happy that we didn’t have to. However, we know that there are still plenty of restaurants, establishments, stores, and public places that don’t go out of their way to accommodate breastfeeding women. So, we’re saying something we thought we’d never say before: We want more institutions to be like Oscar–at least about this one thing.

And the good news just keeps on coming.

It looks like South Dakota’s governor is one of the few progressive and caring politicians in the United States.

According to CNN, Dennis Daugaard, the state’s republican governor, vetoed a bill earlier this week that would have required transgender students who attend the state’s public schools “to use bathrooms and locker rooms that matched their sex birth.”

The South Dakota governor chose to veto the bill, HB 1008, because it “does not address any pressing issue concerning the school districts of South Dakota. As policymakers in South Dakota, we often recite that the best government is the government closest to the people. Local school districts can, and have, made necessary restroom and locker room accommodations that serve the best interests of all students, regardless of biological sex or gender identity.”

We’re incredibly happy this bill is dead as a door nail because it’s hard enough to be a transgender student in school — no one needs an extra helping of state-mandated discrimination to make life more difficult.

Did you tune into the Oscars this year? The annual Academy Awards show hit the air this past Sunday night and it dazzled as usual. But where was the eco Oscar fashion coverage?

Dior, Chanel, Givency…all of the top designers made an appearance on the red carpet of the 87th annual Academy Awards. Glamorous and stunning, to be sure. But something was missing, and that was any coverage of sustainable fashion.

Not that there was no eco fashion on the carpet. Gina Rodriguez (“Jane the Virgin”) and Jake McDorman (“American Sniper”) both wore sustainable styles courtesy of Red Carpet Green Dress, a campaign founded by Suzy Amis Cameron in effort to bring awareness to eco fashion. The fashion campaign holds a contest each year for designs made with environmentally and socially responsible fabrics. The two winners are mentored by an established fashion brand within the fashion industry. This year’s winners were Manon Gabard, who designed Gina’s dress, and Tingting Chen, who designed the tuxedo worn by Jake. Both winners are fashion students at ESMOD-ISEM in Paris.

Missed these two stars in full susty style? They were spotted on some local channels but, sadly, neither made ABC’s event coverage. Too bad, Gina and Jake both looked gorgeous, showing that eco fashion doesn’t mean less-than-glam.

There were other eco touches at the ceremony, mainly by way of organic beauty products. Ilia Beauty made an appearance on the face of Marion Cotillard, who wore Ilia Beauty Sheer Vivid Tinted Moisturizer and Vivid Concealer, and Nicole Kidman with a kiss of Ilia Beauty Lipstick in Blossom Lady. Reese Witherspoon took on a natural glow with Kjaer Weis Cream Blush in Lovely.

Socially conscious jewelry was also on the scene. Eco celeb Emma Watson pointed out that both Steve Carell and Jake McDorman sported cufflinks from He For She, the United Nations Women’s Solidarity Movement for Gender Equality.

Ok. Eco Oscar fashion coverage was, #tbh, a little disappointing. C’mon Hollywood, you are the beacon of all that is new and shiny. We love that our green celebs are throwing pre-Oscar parties. Next year we hope to see more stars donning sustainable duds on the red carpet too.

The 2014 Oscars were woefully lean on sustainable, eco-friendly and vintage couture.
The 2014 Oscars were woefully lean on sustainable, eco-friendly and vintage couture. And while we were hoping for more, we’ll have to take quality over quantity for now.

Bond girl and “Oblivion” star Olga Kurylenko turned heads last night in a stunner of a gown by French-Lebanese fashion student Alice Elia. With 2014 Oscar red carpet trends running toward nudes, metallics and dark neutrals, this pop of rosy red was utterly refreshing and Kurylenko practically glowed in it. The gown was fashioned from 100 percent GOTS certified organic silk hand-dyed with sappanwood and madder root. With its classic old Hollywood styling, this sustainable frock looked right at home next to Gucci gowns.

Not only was Olga Kurylenko’s dress eco-friendly, the actress was also wearing shoes from UK label Beyond Skin. Beyond Skin collaborated with PETA to create a limited edition vegan heel to compliment Alice Elia’s evening gown. From Beyond Skin: “The faux suede and metallic-trimmed evening shoe is made from Dinamica, which is manufactured in Italy and is durable, long lasting, and made from 100% recycled bottle tops. The shoes will be available to purchase from Beyond Skin (www.beyondskin.co.uk) on March 3rd with 10% of proceeds going to MUSE School CA.”

Suzy Amis Cameron’s Red Carpet Green Dress design contest, now in its fifth year, debuted its first menswear winner at the 86th Annual Academy Awards. Worn by Kellan Lutz, star of “The Legend of Hercules”, the suit was made from recycled plastic bottles and featured royal blue piping and a brass button detail that made it stand out in a sea of plain black tuxes and white dinner jackets. Classic with a twist!

The winning tuxedo design was created by 23-year old Jomnarn Dul from H Brothers, one of New Zealand’s most successful menswear brands. Dul was also a key player in the H Brothers collaboration with EKOCYCLETM, a partnership between will.i.am and The Coca-Cola Company.

Director James Cameron wore an EKOCYCLETM tux to the Oscar Fame & Philanthropy party at The Vineyards in Beverly Hills. This Oscar-night viewing party and fundraiser ended with Cameron making the keynote speech, illustrating his philosophy of activism for worthy causes. He gives a little red carpet shout out to his recycled Coke bottle ensemble here.

Though she seems to be headlining every Worst-Dressed list this morning, we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention Liza Minnelli wearing a vintage Halston pantsuit. It was rather disappointing to not see any vintage couture of note on the red carpet this year. Julia Roberts is still making Oscar Best-Dressed lists for her 2001 appearance in a stunning vintage Valentino, proving that recycling never goes out of style.

1. Joaquin Phoenix: The “Her” star is a longtime vegan and animal rights supporter. He’ll certainly be eating with a conscience and we hope he’ll be dressing to match.

2. Charlize Theron: Always gorgeous and stylish, this Oscar-winning presenter is behind an eco-friendly line of TOMS shoes and denim, benefitting the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project.

3/4.Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie: Two of this year’s presenters, Brad and Angelina aren’t vegetarian or vegan, but they do have an organic vineyard in France. And being two of the biggest Hollywood humanitarians out there, who knows, perhaps they’ll be dining and dressing in accord with their ethics, too.

5. Kate Hudson: Kate always looks gorgeous and it may be in part due to her hair. That’s right, this year’s presenter also co-created an eco and cruelty-free hair care line with hairdresser David Babaii that benefited WildAid.

6. Jared Leto: Best Supporting Actor nominee in “Dallas Buyers Club”, Jared is a longtime vegan and animal rights supporter. He’s always dressing with style, and we’re looking forward to what we wears to the Oscars.

7. Kerry Washington: Presenting this year, Kerry is always eco-conscious, and could take some cues from the gorgeous eco apartment makeover she received courtesy of Oprah Magazine a few years ago. We’ll be on the lookout!

8. Leonardo DiCaprio: The Best Actor Nominee is not only a master of the screen, he’s lent his name to some pretty rad eco initiatives including a coffee. He is outspoken about global warming having co-wrote, co-produced and narrated the film “11th Hour“, which addressed the issues at hand and how we can fix the problems. We sure hope he’s dressing with that in mind.

9. Naomi Watts: Presenting this year, vegetarian and eco-minded mom, Naomi Watts always looks beautiful, and we know based on her stunning gown last year that she won’t cut any corners (except for the one’s in her dress.)

10. Jason Sudeikis: Rumor has it that since engaging himself to the gorgeous vegan Olivia Wilde, Jason has adopted a healthier lifestyle. He sure looks great these days. So what will this presenter wear? We’re hoping Olivia picks it out.

11. Cate Blanchett: Best Actress Nominee for her stunning role in Woody Allen’s “Blue Jasmine”, Cate is a winner whether she takes home the Oscar or not. A vegetarian and humanitarian, she is also a big proponent of the Greening the Wharf initiative that installed more than 1,900 solar panels at the Sydney Theatre Company.

12. Jim Carrey: This hilarious presenter (and recent author!) boasted about his healthy diet last year—being almost close to vegan besides eating eggs. We’re assuming they’re from a local farmers market here in LA. And, as a founding member of the Global Alliance for Transformational Entertainment, he sure has an eye for living consciously. Let’s hope it translates into his attire as well.

13. Matthew McConaughey: Best Actor Nominee and favorite to win the award credits his son for making him “more eco.” If his commitment to living with a smaller footprint is at all like his recent commitment to better acting, we simply cannot wait to see what he wears on Sunday. (Suggestion: something tight, please.)

14. Emma Watson: “Harry Potter” star Emma Watson is proving there’s life beyond the Potter years. She’s also proving that there’s a lot more to life than making movies. A vegetarian, Watson is also behind Pure Threads, a fashion line that features environmentally friendly, organic dresses. We sure hope she’s wearing one on Sunday!

15. Anne Hathaway: Presenter Anne Hathaway is a committed vegetarian and fashionista, so we know she’s got something gorgeous and kind up her sleeves…if she’s wearing any.

Check back in post-Oscars for a review of the best of the best in eco and cruelty-free fashion.

Joan Rivers followed with: “My first sexual experience was a rape…” As she trailed off looking forlorn, then the two women caught eyes and said nearly simultaneously, “But did he press charges?” and then tumbled over in hysterical laughter—and so did I.

One could argue that Sarah and Joan’s joke was no worse than what happened at the actual Oscars, that it was, in fact, a direct extension of the mean-spirited nature of the show and proof that the cool girls are in on the joke.

Yes, we live in a culture where mean is the new cool. Example: The existence of Tosh.O. And, even the always eager-to-please Anne Hathaway mentioned to a red carpet interviewer that she loves Cards Against Humanity, which is easily the meanest, funniest game I’ve ever played. I play viciously and to win because, in many ways, I am a fan of the culture of mean. I revel in a snide remark. Dorothy Parker is one of my personal heroes, and I actually use the word cunt on a comparatively (to almost anyone) regular basis.

The trouble with what happened at the Oscars, and after, is that the mean wasn’t funny; it was sexist. The cool girls weren’t making the jokes; they were the butts.

We all know the basics by now, but here’s the quick recap: Seth MacFarlane opened the show with a campy song and dance about whose boobs he’d seen in what movie—the level of joy he expressed at glimpsing Jodie Foster’s breasts during the rape scene in The Accused was especially disturbing. Amy Davidson broke down the real message of the song best in her extremely dead-on New Yorker piece: “You girls think you’re making art, the Academy, through MacFarlane, seemed to say, but all we—and the “we” was resolutely male—really see is that we got you to undress. The joke’s on you.”

He then went on to insult gay people, Jewish people, Quvenzhane Wallis, George Clooney, Rihanna, Latinos (the men got a shout-out here as well), and our intelligence.

Later in the show, he sang a song, omitting the second half of a rhyming couplet, the first half of which ended with “Helen Hunt.” In that moment, he opened the door for the tweet. This one. The one in which The Onion called a fist-pumping, genuinely just happy to be nominated, nine-year-old girl a cunt.

In what I think was a direct response to that last song of the night—and actually a jab at MacFarlane’s stupid joke rather than a comment about Wallis herself—The Onion referred to a little girl who brought a puppy purse to the Oscars a cunt. It happened, and regardless of why, it was a terrible mistake, one the paper apologized for in the best way possible.

What bothers me most about all of this—which is saying quite a bit, considering—is that as a “cool” girl who tosses words like cunt around on the regular, I am supposed to see that I am in on the joke and laugh along or risk being labeled as an uptight prude.

A blogger on Low Boredom Threshold took the opportunity to shame us into being okay with sexism cloaked in humor by writing: “I honestly believe there were two completely different Academy Awards programs telecast … To be blunt, I think one show was streamed to people who are intelligent, knowledgeable, self-confident and culturally tuned in and a second one that was streamed to people who are as dull as a stump [sic] with a poor sense of self, a minimal sense of humor and absolutely no sense of irony.”

You know who’s super into irony? Nine-year-olds.

If you’ll allow, here’s my “stump” speech: Ohhhh… irony—yeah, I get it. Sideboob is one of this year’s biggest fashion trends and we’re all suddenly incensed by a song about boobs? Women show up to the party with slits up to their, uh Hunts, and we’re not supposed to sexualize them? A man takes the opportunity to put down women for close to four hours on TV and we’re all supposed to think it’s funny so we don’t seem like militants. That’s not irony; it’s bullying.

In a country where elected officials think a baby is a woman’s biggest organ and that some rape might be legitimate, and in a world where girls (and boys) from New York to Thailand are subjected to sex trafficking, I admit it’s a little lame to be spending this much time debating an awards show. However, when you have the chance to talk to hundreds of millions of people, even as a comedian, you might want to do better than make boob jokes.

Fashion’s royal court is only for a small percentage of Americans with royal salaries.

One has only to look at last night’s Oscar results for The King’s Speech to see that when it comes to royalty we are smitten.
“Fashion is royalty,” a friend said to me over dinner last week in New York.

 -->

Is it possible that the most consumer-driven part of our society could seriously be considered royalty? And do we really want to consider the most irresponsible of our designers the new court’s kings and queens?

My friend may be on to something. How many stories did we have to endure over New York Fashion Week detailing obsessive information about what courtesan celebrities were wearing in the front row to see their noble (king or queen) designer? Humbly though they sat to admire the breathtaking fantasies from legends like Karl Lagerfeld, Versace and Tomas Maier of Bottega Veneta, we undoubtedly heard (or maybe cared) less about the looks coming down the catwalk as the star-studded sidelines.

In a recent Wall Street Journal article that peeks inside the closets of those rarefied shoppers of fashion weeks in New York, Paris and Milan, the world’s most expensive clothes may only be made for those with royal salaries. “But many of the runway styles are actually purchased by a small group of customers, not all of them from the isle of Manhattan. And unlike celebrities and socialites, who often get designer clothes at no charge in exchange for publicity, these customers pay full price,” says WSJ writer Elizabeth Holmes.

Is this the royalty my friend, a struggling young designer, is referencing? Yes.

A rereading of this fairy tale might encourage us to ask why fashion’s royal court is being led by people purchasing clothes with heavily gilded price tags. A Balmain gold mini-dress at $74,000? Especially in a still-tepid economy, such displays are garish. The era of bling bling and logomania among the peasants may have abated in step with the financial times, but decadent fashion still wears its crown.

Fashion is royalty, she reiterates. Heady, worked up and a little intoxicated, she glares and says, “Ha! You’re just like a peasant with the clothes you love,” and takes a conclusive sip.

Indeed I am, and in fact, we all are. What comes down the catwalk and drives fashion magazine editorials is not the ready-to-wear, (much less the mass-produced fast fashion that will show up in stores in the months after fashion weeks), it’s the thin slice for the royals and their royalty. This can be confusing for the average American fashion consumer, seeing the gaudy and glamorous creations of fashion week and the fantastical spreads soon after in glossy publications. Is this a level of fashion the typical consumer can ever attain? Yet this is what drives fashion, and all young designers must visit the high design courts to pay homage to those patrons on whom their success hinges. Whether they want to or not.

The crustiest U.S. Marshall ever to step foot in the Indian Nations is rounded up to aid a willful 14-year-old girl seeking to hunt down and punish her father’s killer. A repressed and stammering soon-to-be king is rescued by an eccentric speech therapist who refuses to bow down to the royal and becomes his BFF. And in the virtual wild west of social networking, a Harvard misfit and his geek cohorts execute an online scheme for profiling and hooking up with cool chicks – an idea “borrowed” from hulking twin brothers on the Crimson’s crew team.

The bonding, wrangling and retribution underlying this year’s Oscar contenders – The King’s Speech, True Grit and The Social Network – all strike a familial chord with male film goers who grow tired of a bucket of popcorn with compassionate mothers, wedding tales and child loss grief – common fodder of book club faves spun into celluloid. While I shudder to use the phrase dick flick – which is arguably as sexist and minimizing as chick flick – it just might fit the bill, especially when you toss in an Irish American fighter saga with a Rocky-rise and feckless half brother in need of extreme rehab.

Christian Bale already took the Golden Globe for his stunning performance as the weaker half of the Mickey Ward story, while bets are on Colin Firth over the ripped Wahlberg in the best actor title. As George VI, Firth also displayed how containing one’s temper yields tremendous results, and was crowned with the gold for his role.

Manly, yes, these yarns, but I like them too, and with the exception of violence, torture, rattlesnakes lurking in caves, severed limbs and blatant child neglect, the testosterone pulsating through the veins of these films doesn’t make them any less entertaining, or even enjoyable, for most women. It is the vulnerability revealed in the exceptional performances that strikes a chord.

We want our men to open up and get it out, as Firth’s “Bertie” eventually does with the gentle nudging of his loving wife and the tactical prodding of Geoffrey Rush’s Lionel Logue. We fantasize about our daughters having the uncanny resources exhibited by Hailee Steinfeld’s Mattie Ross when confronted with the worse elements roaming the planet – those that threaten to bring physical harm to the innocent. She isn’t dependent on males but finds it works better to interact and do business with them on her rough and tumble journey.

And while the domain of billionaire achievers in the entrepreneurial tech field has largely existed as an exclusive man’s club, we look for inroads while tapping the benefits of social networks to further our professional and personal lives. We may not come to love the founder of Facebook but we are grateful to have reconnected with our friends from junior high.

What allows these films to cross the genders in appeal is they don’t smack of the usual gratuitous violence that makes past Coen brother films too gross for comfort, the Fargo credo of a mucked kidnapping and slaughter of a North Dakota housewife – senseless murder deconstructed as black humor deemed as genius. In 1991, when Silence of the Lambs was crowned best picture, many of my women friends threw their hands up in total disgust. Sure, the suspense in the psychological thriller mounted to an edge-of-your-seat crescendo, but it didn’t negate the fact the basic plot surrounded the serial torture and killing of women.

In the Coens’ remake of True Grit, the female protagonist is empowered on cartoonist proportions, yet empowered nonetheless, and like Clarice Starling, she perseveres when finally confronted with the devil in the flesh. We are able to root for her throughout the film without being exposed to horrific scenes that haunt us when we are alone and hear things going bump in the night. This is what separates Grit from the maiming scenes of Quentin Terantino’s Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction or the gut wrenching bloodshed in Oliver Stone’s Platoon or Natural Born Killers.

In terms of The King’s Speech, it is the tender, feminine side of these men that eventually comes to define their lifelong friendship, the stripping of the egos and the trust that allows us to be vulnerable enough to grow and to be loved. While the performances of the British cast are perhaps the most Oscar worthy of any of the contenders, I wonder if the subtleties of the film’s message are powerful enough to win over the academy – one that has embraced past winners: The Hurt Locker, Slumdog Millionaire, No Country for Old Men, The Departed, Unforgiven, Bravehart, The Departed and Gladiator in recent years.

If Speech walks away empty handed (Firth was the only winner at the Globes), I for one will be left asking if the film could have benefited by a riveting dueling scene among the princes, a raping or beating of a chambermaid or visuals depicting the starvation the prince claimed to have suffered under the watch of a sadistic nanny.

Should Grit or Social Network, other good films, take the big prize, it will validate something I have felt for years, that vulnerability in men is a much harder thing to reward than corruption and violence, at least in Hollywood. It’s a shame because in the end, discipline and diplomacy over cheating, scheming and brawn will reign supreme in ensuring the survival of the species.

Last Wednesday night was cold and rainy in Los Angeles, but the streets of Hollywood were green. Crowded outside the legendary Avalon Hollywood, the green glitterati walked the artificial green grass carpet to party the night away at the 7th Annual Global Green Pre-Oscar bash.

Together with a host committee including James Cameron and Suzy Amis Cameron, the party was dubbed “Greener Cities for a Cooler Planet.” The soiree focused on raising funds and awareness for Global Green’s national initiatives to fight climate change. And witness to it all was this writer, planted right in the middle of the green carpet, sporting organic makeup and styled hair from Primrose Organics Salon and bedecked in my Carol Young Undesigned finest.

And just who tripped the light green-tastic by me that night? Serena Williams, Mel B, Nicole Scherzinger, Nia Vardalos, Juliette Lewis, Radha Mitchell worked the red, ahem, green carpet. Radha Mitchell (after patiently listening to me gush about her performance in “High Art” – she’s awesome) shared with me her excitement about spending the evening with like minded folk. Jessica Alba and husband Cash Warren rushed by under a shared umbrella. Anna Getty talked to us about her upcoming cookbook, Anna Getty’s “Easy Green Organic.” And eco-expert Zem Joaquin showed off her Deborah Lindquist dress and eco-friendly jewelry.

Prior to stepping onto the green carpet, celebs and guests recorded an online video PSA entitled “I Am.” (This will soon be released by Global Green.) Written by environmentalist and famed TV writer (Thirtysomething, anyone?) Marshall Herskovitz, the PSA will “Raise awareness of the threats posed by global climate change to more than 150 million Americans and more than 2.75 billion globally,” according to Global Green.

Guests were also treated to a look at the new Chevy Volt Plug-In Electric Vehicle, to be publicly available by the end of the year. It can travel up to 40 miles on electric charge – and check this out, you can plug it into any old plug! Other sponsors of the event were Pureology, 360 Vodka, LACarGUY, Alternative Apparel, Centropolis and Newton Vineyard, among others.

Once inside, the guests were treated to cosmetic treatments by Purelogy and organic t-shirt screenings by (who else?) Alternative Apparel. They rocked it out to music by Benji and Joel Madden, Mia Maestro and Juliette Lewis. Suzy Amis Cameron’s previewed the eco-friendly couture she will wear Oscar night.

Matt Petersen, Global Green USA President and CEO, said, “By raising awareness about the threats posed by climate change and by holding our corporate and political leaders accountable, we can make a real difference. Americans can and must do something about climate change, and we can start by creating green buildings, schools, cities and communities that create green jobs, save money and improve our health.”
