“Clueless,” had its mainstream fashion moment a year or so ago when every fashion writer was penning pieces about how women could compile their own Cher Horowitz outfits. Now it’s time for “Legally Blonde” to take center stage with an honest-to-goddess merchandise line.

Celebrating funny women

No one can deny that Elle Woods, the star of “Legally Blonde” played by Reese Witherspoon, says iconic lines that still serve fans; even 16 years after the film’s release.

And because Miss Woods is still fresh in the minds of old and new “Legally Blonde” fans, two big creative entities are teaming up to bring Woods’ catchy sayings to the masses via a fashion line.

MGM and Elizabeth Banks’ WhoHaHa, a digital platform company that spotlights funny women, is releasing a small line of merch inspired by the valley-girl-gone-lawyer flick.

Girly and smart

So far, the “Legally Blonde” line includes hats, notebooks, shirts, and sweaters printed with iconic lines from the rom-com film. Most of the merchandise is pink—naturally—with one white shirt and a notebook being the exception.

Lines selected from the movie include, “Whoever Said Orange Was the New Pink Was Seriously Disturbed”; “What? Like It’s Hard?”; and “Bend And Snap.”

While on the surface this fashion line may seem like no big deal, it’s honestly kind of a real big deal.

Women like movie merch, too

Seriously. Think about how many dude-themed movies have shirts, etc. printed with memorable quotes. Heck, off the top of my head, I can think of shirts or hats I’ve seen printed with, “Say Hello To My Little Friend” (“Scarface”), “Are We Cool?” (“Pulp Fiction”), and “It’s A Trap!” (“Star Wars”). All fine movies and memorable quotes. But all these quotes were voiced by male actors.

Now, if I know anything, it’s that women love movies just as much as men. So, why wouldn’t “Legally Blonde” fans clamor at the chance to buy fun, printed T-shirts, sweaters, journals, and hats that are comfortable, useful, and casual?

Athens, Georgia based Community releases a Spring/Summer 2014 collection of wearable nature.

Nestled in the heart of southern Americana is a style savvy, eco chic and continuously creative fashion collective and shop called Community. Founded in Athens, Georgia in 2010 by designer and entrepreneur Sanni Baumgartner, Community offers a selection of organic and ethical fashion alongside re-designed vintage garments that contribute to the local economy and support Athens’ artists and designers. For her Spring 2014 (cleverly named) Community Service collection, Sanni took inspiration from her home environment and collaborated with local manufacturers and artists, leading the example for creating sustainable clothing in the USA.

The Community Service Spring/Summer 2014 collection features a naturalistic yet modern take on garments. Sanni based the most recent collection on prints of tree bark, lichen and moss taken from the landscape of the North Georgia mountains, translating them onto fabrics and their form on the human body.

The texture photos were then printed onto organic cotton using Spoonflower, a North Carolina based digital fabric printing company that specializes in printing on to anything from silk to wall paper. A combination of this printed fabric and re-purposed vintage materials resulted in a collection of fresh, nature inspired and very chic pieces.

All of the materials used in the collection are either organic cotton or recycled vintage, and everything was designed and hand made at Community in downtown Athens, GA.

Sanni herself states that images and prints incorporated into the collection “really ties together my love for this area, for the beauty of nature and for sustainable fashion. It’s like wearing nature, but modern and high tech at the same time.” The collection was launched on April 2014, and can be found at the flagship store or at Community’s online shop.

Pop star and fashion icon Gwen Stefani’s new fashion collection replaces jeans with eco-friendly non-denim options.

Almost everyone loves jeans – most of us wear them at least a few times a week. But Gwen Stefani has ditched jeans to the wayside, and is offering the rest of us the chance to do so as well. The fashion icon has teamed up with denim guru and co-founder of 7 For All Mankind, Michael Glasser, to come up with a collection aiming to replace those beloved jeans with chic and comfortable denim alternatives made from eco-friendly tencel fabric.

Stefani is launching the collection under the name DWP, which stands for Design With Purpose, showcasing a stylish and casual chic trousers. All items are made out of tencel, a silky and naturally wrinkle-resistant material which can be coated, treated or dyed to give it a denim, leather or cotton look with less environmental impact than treating denim. The super comfortable and well-draped trousers are adorned with details like asymmetrical zippers and rolled cuffs, channeling Stefani’s personal sense of style. The whole collection is manufactured in Glasser’s factory in Vernon, CA, making it local and ethical, as strict regulations and labor rights are strongly enforced.

When Stefani and Glasser originally joined forces, they had planned on creating a sustainable, eco-friendly, luxury denim line, but decided on the DWP luxe sweatpants, jumpsuits and drapey tops version as soon as their Neiman Marcus buyers expressed how over the five-pocket jean they’ve become by now. We agree that the outcome is far more favorable, and will be perfect for upcoming spring and summer weather and showing off cute ankle boots and strappy sandals.

You’ll find DWP’s full 18-piece collection in stores this spring, where prices for the brightly colored tops and dresses, printed and patterned trousers and jumpsuits will range from $150-200. It’s more than many people spend on casual clothing and simple basics, but a fair price considering the local production, sustainable materials and ethical manufacturing practices involved in the creation of each piece.

The recently launched eco-conscious fashion line Océé is inspired by oceanic imagery. Each piece is made to order and 2% of the proceeds benefit Surfrider Foundation Europe.

Océane Buret connected with the ocean at an early age, while spending summers sailing with her family across France and Europe. Since then, she has spent time working in the fashion industry in Paris, New York, Auckland and Los Angeles. Chaz Gangster is an American artist whose work is inspired by the swirling colorful display of oceanic imagery. He has also worked on costumes and art featured in music videos by artists like MGMT, the Killers, and Chairlift.

The two met in New York City in 2009 and decided to start an eco-conscious fashion line together. This first collection by Océé features five prints of Gangster’s art on unisex T-shirts and tank tops made from organic cotton. The prints – named “Onde,” “Abysse,” “Anémone,” “Evume,” and “Méduse” – pay tribute to the priceless but fragile environment in our oceans. Fittingly, the collection was made in partnership with ocean conservation organization Surfrider Foundation Europe, to which Océé donates 2% of their profit.

One of Buret’s main goals, however, is to propose a new behavior towards fashion, develop an alternative to mass production and fast fashion and raise awareness about sustainable development among its customers. Each piece in the collection is a limited edition of a 1,000 and are made to order according to custumers’ selections, which involve print, size and shape. The only way to purchase an item is to pre-order it online via Océé’s website.

Buret hopes to expand the line to include swimwear, surfwear, accessories and even more custom items. In the meantime, we’ll just lose ourselves in these gorgeous prints.
