For the past 25 years, the Spiritual Science Research Foundation (SSRF) has stood by the notion that “eighty percent of problems in life have their root cause in the spiritual dimension,” explaining that “the overwhelming importance of spiritual healing in solving problems in one’s life.” The SSRF also suggests that in order to have fewer life problems, you can’t overlook the need for guidance and a proper understanding of the spiritual realm.  This is where expertly-trained advisor, intuitive healer, and founder of Matter & Home, purveyor of sacred objects meant to enhance one’s spiritual practice, Holly Star, comes in.

Star recalls the pivotal moment while living in Indonesia that she fell seriously ill and met a female healer who delivered an ominous, yet life-changing, message. “She explained if I did not go into healing, I would die on that island, as this was my calling,” said Star. “I knew she was right, so from there I began to work on my own way of seeing and expressing.”

“I studied and meditated for many years in Japan, Bali, India, and California. Mostly secluded in the mountains,” explains Star. “I studied what I saw, deciphering patterns and how they relate to the body. The desire to want to know and help others on such a deep level requires care and dedication, something that not everyone is cut out for.

Star, however, took to this transformative life-path and never veered, “Upon coming back to the states, I started my own healing practice and it grew fast.” Although she credits the swift exchange that only a hub like New York City can bring, Star’s reliance on her word of mouth business model naturally thrived.

Star’s intuitive healing practice often centers around clients on a long-term or ongoing basis. She describes the process as going through a “very intensive and deep exploration to re-evaluate one’s life and get it to flow more freely.”

In addition to one-on-one spiritual healing, Star also offers space cleanings described as, “an assessment of a home and/or piece of land,” where Star will do clearings to “reset the tone or rhythm of the energy to be compatible with the client’s own energy and level of movement. The goal is to create harmony between the physical space [or] environment and the people inhabiting it.”

Because of Star’s demanding schedule, and her desire to set her clients up for success by teaching them to develop their own inner growth and intuition practices, she came up with the idea to create custom candles and meditation boxes that provided portable and beautiful spiritual healing vessels. That way, even when Star couldn’t be there, her clients still had something tangible to remind them of their personal growth, journey, and goals.

In an effort to declutter your space and live a more organized and happy life, we’ve gathered some tips and tricks to help you get your shit together.

With a fresh year usually comes the desire to get your life in order. And when your day-to-day consists of working to get around your stuff, instead of making your stuff work for you, then that usually means it’s time for a change. Whether you’re plagued with too many things, or you live in a small space, we’ve gathered some tips to help you declutter your home and organize the bulky and awkward items that have overstayed their welcome.

1. Holiday Decor

Ah yes, the dreaded post-holiday cleanup is no less dreadful, but can be much more productive. The idea here is functionality, and the thought that you’ll keep these storage containers around for years. Pick up a duffle bag designed especially for your artificial tree, a few collapsible tarp bins for linens and blankets, and those boxes with individual compartments for your ornaments and other odds and ends.

2. Food Items

Buying food in bulk is a great way to get better prices at your health food store, and saves trips to the grocery store. Keeping these items fresh is critical, therefore, we recommend glass containers with airtight lids in the shape of a square. This way you can fit them in your cabinets without wasting space due to a cylindrical exterior.

3. Pots and Pans

Storing clean pots and pans in your oven when not in use? Yeah, you know who you are. Well kick that habit to the curb by investing in a couple of towel bars a la Ikea (or shop something like the Habitat for Humanity Restore) and hang those babies up. A few S-hooks are all you’ll need display your cookware and have a place to rest the lids.

4. Clothes

Sweaters, handbags, and shoes are all bulky, and closet space is precious, so let’s fix this problem. A great way to store these items is to get yourself a trunk or two that you can be placed somewhere in your room (perhaps in lieu of your current nightstand or at the foot of the bed) where you can keep your clothes and accessories, especially the seasonal stuff. Aside from that, getting a multi-tier shoe rack is seriously life changing. And don’t be afraid to post up some peg board in your closet to hang smaller handbags and jewelry.

5. Books

Maybe you prefer paper to digital, and that’s totally fine, but as any book collector knows, these can quickly take over your life. A bookshelf is an obvious place to start, but for something less traditional you could use crates (these also double as end tables and coffee tables), those cool floating bookshelves, or rolling storage cubes that can be used to create temporary book nooks whenever and wherever you need one.

6. Hand Tools

Every person needs a set of tools. The extent to which you collect and use them, however, will vary greatly. That doesn’t mean you don’t need proper storage, though, so try a few of these ideas around your house. Magnetic strips are perfect catchalls for screws, washers, and other metal hand tools, and they don’t use any shelf space. Glass jars that screw into lids attached to the underside of shelves or cabinets offer lots of storage for supplies. And finally, pegboard is the ultimate way to declutter your tools. From hanging your hammer to putting up pliers, you can seriously mount just about any hand tool to pegboard. Check out this garage for some inspiration.

7. Exercise Equipment

This won’t really help you with huge pieces like treadmills and elliptical machines, but you can certainly find homes for those free weights and resistance bands. Baskets, wire bins, hooks, and storage benches are all viable solutions for that workout gear. The baskets can make free weights and kettlebells look wrangled; hooks can hold your resistance bands, towels, and yoga mat; and the storage bench can be a place to store sneakers.

8. Cleaning Supplies

Can’t live with them (when they’re in disarray), and can’t live without them. A wall-mounted set-up that secures brooms, rakes, and pretty much anything else with a handle is a must-have. Bonus points if it has little hooks for hanging miscellaneous tools. Or, you can opt for a free-standing cabinet that is tall, but narrow. And if all else fails, just use pegboard. Seriously.

If you’re ready to help the planet while also improving yourself, then you’re going to love our earth-friendly New Year’s resolutions.

Eating healthier, exercising more, and cutting out the procrastination may be at the top of your New Year’s resolutions list; and while we applaud your desire to be a better person (from the inside-out), we implore you to take things one step further by incorporating Mother Nature, too. Not only will our suggestions benefit you, but they’ll also help green your planet in small ways, bringing a greater sense of holistic living to your life.

1. Eat Less Meat

Current figures say that global animal farming is responsible for nearly a third (or almost 30 percent) of all emissions worldwide. Furthermore, in addition to making you healthier, an Oxford Martin School research study finds that a widespread switch to vegetarianism would reduce food-related emissions by 63 percent. Start by participating in Meatless Mondays, and ask yourself if you really need a meat or dairy product present at every meal of the day — three meals a day multiplied by seven days means consuming meat 21 times a week. Not only does this slow digestion, but it also raises cholesterol and causes premature aging.

2. Ditch Plastic Bags

It’s time to ditch the plastic bags in favor of reusable totes – but, like, for real this time. Only around two percent of plastic bags get recycled annually, while the rest just sit, and sit, and sit some more in our landfills and oceans. Throw those cloth bags in the car and keep them there, so you don’t forget them at home, or try something even more practical, like a roomy (and stylish) backpack for carrying on small trips that you can then fill with your merchandise after paying at the register.

3. Upcycle Your Textiles

With the rise of fast fashion (and fast lifestyles), the average citizen now throws away 70 pounds of clothing and textiles each year, which means this waste also accounts for five percent of all landfill space. With numbers like that, it’s important to come up with solutions. Clothing swaps are great (and fun, and free) ways to do away with gently used stuff in your closet, all while having an excuse to get together and drink wine with your girlfriends. And don’t forget about all of the amazing upcycling potential your clothes have.

4. Pledge To Recycle

All it takes is a small step, a little action, to really get things moving in the residential recycling department. For curbside pickup, check with your local ordinance and get the bins you need. Next, head to the store and pick up one extra garbage can to start with, and begin with a product like plastics, or aluminum, or paper, or glass. Just focus on recycling one category to begin with, and watch your passion grow. Apparently, recycling 100 cans could light your bedroom for two weeks. Imaging the difference you could make!

5. Compost Your Scraps

If you make a conscious decision to compost at home, you could break down the egg shells, banana peels, and other organic waste that would otherwise sit contained in a plastic garbage bag sealed off from the earth and soil it could otherwise nourish. This process is as simple as setting up an outside receptacle that fits your needs (the setup is usually the most intensive, if you can call it that), collecting your scraps after cooking (and some other activities), and placing them in the outside bin where they will decompose, rendering you a rich, fertile compound that can be added to your garden.

6. Grow Something Edible

Even if it’s as small as an indoor herb garden, there is real power behind growing your own food. Edible plants and gardens will not only save you money and potentially improve your health, but they offer a sense of accomplishment for your efforts, and help reduce widespread farming issues. Build (or buy) a small raised garden bed outdoors and get to planting, or research all of the delicious herbs and fruits and veggies you can grow indoors — you may be surprised at the (yard-less) possibilities!

But don’t worry, it’s a lot easier than you think. Not only does the EPA have some seriously good ideas on how to accomplish this, but we have the scoop on sustainable decorating ideas that will help when excessive waste is at its peak. Fortunately, when it comes to decorating ideas, you don’t have to skimp on the festive touches around your home — all it really requires is a little bit of creativity and some elbow grease to accomplish these DIY ideas. Tree Ideas

If you want to avoid chopping down a healthy tree this year, and opt out of buying better, yet still full of harmful chemicals, fake trees, then choose a hip DIY version.

1. Chalkboard Tree

Have a chalkboard wall in your house? Need an excuse to have one? Well, your Christmas wish came early this year, because we can’t recommend this sketched tree and vintage light accompaniment enough. 2. Repurposed Ladder

Pull out that old wooden ladder and get to decorating. Use vines, lights, pine cones, burlap, and even some ornaments to recreate this rustic, shabby chic “tree” a la Funky Junk Interiors. The best part is that when it’s not lighting up your life, you can still keep the ladder around for its intended use.

3. Scrap Wood Tree

Who knew trees made from scrap wood could be so stunning? Simple, yet impactful, these Christmas trees use leftover wood to mimic the real thing. Although lacking in the green and bushy department, it’s still very warm, inviting, and seriously festive. Plus, it can be used year after year. Garland Ideas

Deck your halls with strands of beautiful handmade garland. Ranging from natural fruit and spices to glistening rounds of leftover gift bags from Christmas past, then you’ll adore these ideas.

4. Food Garland

Cooking Channel TV has some super cool ideas for food-based garlands that can be composted, munched on, or repurposed when you’re through. The contrast of the popcorn and black licorice strand looks very modern and hip, the orange slices appear very fresh and lively, while the cinnamon stick and cranberry pairing lends a traditional Christmas touch. It’s hard to pick a favorite, so we’ll let you be the judge!

5. Pine Cone Garland

Pine cone garland is beautiful, rustic, and practically free! Hop on over to Bob Vila for instructions on how to make some of your own. From how to prep them (cleaning and baking) to how to hang them, they’ve got you covered. Make it as full or as sparse as you’d like and get creative — a dusting of gold leaf would add a festive touch.

6. Upcycled Garland

Use the tutorial at Paper Daisy Design if you want to sew your garland, otherwise just glue them together, plain sides touching over a piece of string, twine, or thread. She uses store bought paper, but you can easily use old book pages, leftover holographic gift bags, or wrapping paper scraps.

Gift Wrap Ideas

The gifts under your tree can add a lot of pizazz to your overall Christmas decor aura. Whether you choose fabric or paper, there’s an option for each, with some embellishment tips to boot.

7. Cloth and Fabric

Use the furoshiki method that originated in Japan and you’ll be able to use things like cloth dish towels, bandanas, upcycled fabric scraps, and even old sweaters (like the beautiful gray cable knit seen over at Boxwood Clippings) to bundle up your gifts.

8. Natural Embellishments

With a few simple upcycling projects, you can take those old coffee grounds and expired coffee beans and turn them into some pretty useful DIY products.

Coffee is like the peanut butter to my jelly, the milk to my cookies, the Kim to my Kanye. Coffee is the wind beneath my wings, and I would be completely useless without it. Yet, every day I seem to do away with its waste. Old grounds and beans get treated like second class citizens, and ya know what? That needs to change. My coffee deserves more respect, dammit, which is why I’ve found you these totally cool and useful upcycling projects using your leftover coffee stuff.

1. Under Eye Cream

Coffee-infused under eye cream is said to be life-changing. Apparently, this miracle working concoction will help reduce puffiness, reduce the appearance of dark circles, and help with fine lines.

In addition to the coffee oil, which you extract yourself, it calls for a variety of other skin nourishing carrier oils and butters – almost all of which I have used personally at one time or another and have had nothing but positive results. Soap Deli News shares the tutorial you need to conquer this project.

2. Bar Soap

The next upcycled DIY looks super simple to make and doesn’t require a lot of hard-to-find ingredients, precise measurements, or time. Plus, if you like the idea of French vanilla coffee, then you’ll love the smell of this vanilla extract-infused soap.

With just old coffee grounds, glycerine bar soap, vanilla, and equipment, like a muffin tin, you can create an exfoliating and deodorizing soap to help invigorate you morning, noon, and night. Clearly Natural makes a good bar soap that I’ve used before, and is a glycerine-based product that I think would work well for this project. Check out the full tutorial over at Popsugar.

3. Decorative Balls

Everyone needs a decorative ball or two or ten in their lives, but the storebought types are expensive, and can be kinda wasteful. Instead, I’ve got a hybrid project for you (fully upcycled if you use old tennis balls) that uses styrofoam orbs and old coffee beans.

The blogger actually uses beans for eating, but if you follow her instructions over at Love Sweet Love, then I’m confident you can use the expired coffee assortment you have on hand. It’s basically a layer of coordinating paint (brown in this case), some hot glue, and some patience. Other decorative uses for old beans would be filler for jars, and as a base layer in which to nestle your candles.

4. Scented Candle

Speaking of candles, this DIY project is guaranteed to make your house smell like a vanilla latte all day long. The tutorial from Hello Glow calls for using your own gorgeous glassware, reusing unscented candles (or you can buy wax chips), a wick, whole coffee beans, and chopped vanilla beans. I can’t believe how beautiful these look. They would make awesome gifts and the aesthetic possibilities are endless!

5. Face Mask

Take the benefits of coffee to your face by making and using this simple ground face mask. Yes, it might look a little silly at first, but if it’s true that coffee reduces redness, increases circulation, and exfoliates the skin, then it’s totally worth it.

Beauty Banter uses whole ground coffee beans, but you can simply apply the grounds from this morning’s coffee. Combine these with a few other natural ingredients like honey, lemon juice, cocoa powder, and milk or almond milk, and you’ll be ready for your close-up in no time.

6. Wood Stain

If you’re turned off by the idea of using a stinky, toxic commercial wood stain, then you’ll love this new medium. DIY Vintage Chic has a great tutorial on how to create and use a coffee and vinegar based wood stain. The results are subtle at first, but after allowing it to sit for a week, the finished product is quite impressive. Not only that, but it’s natural, uses your old grounds, and doesn’t emit any noxious chemicals.

Every kitchen could use a pick-me-up now and then, which is why we’ve rounded up a handful of kitchen DIY ideas just in time for the holidays.

Whether you have five days, five hours, or five minutes, take some time and freshen up the heart of your home. Even if you’re not a savvy DIY-er, many of these projects take very little creativity or technical skills to accomplish.

1. Chic Shelf Paper

Shelf liner, wallpaper, and even leftover wrapping paper are great ways to freshen up your cabinets. First, it’s perfect for covering up less than savory looking shelf bottoms on older cabinets and inside drawers. It will add a pop of color, or a fun geometric pattern. And finally, it can bring life to open shelving areas, spots where you may have removed your upper cabinet doors altogether, and glass front cabinets, including the china hutch that desperately needs a makeover, like this “after” beauty over at HGTV.

Choose a patterned option for something fun and unexpected, especially if you plan on having your in-laws over for the holidays. You never know when they might be trying to snoop, I mean, find the plates so they can set the table, silly! Another option for a more eco-friendly touch is choosing cork liner. This earthy tone and texture would look great with cabinets that are white, gray, black, or dark brown for a nice color contrast.

2. Savvy Storage

Don’t settle for looking at a boring sack of flour or bag of sugar, if you’re doing any cooking in your kitchen this season, make it easier on the eyes and more efficient by swapping out bulky baggies for cool canisters. Whether you opt for Momtastic blog’s mason jar hack, complete with chalkboard lids for easy labeling, or prefer a modern geometric look to your containers, make it happen before the guests start pouring in.

Branch out from only organizing the ingredients – your tools are just as important. Pick up a few natural baskets or revamped thrift store trays that you can display on your kitchen counters, and fill or stack these with your important tools, like the rolling pin, your cookbook, small cutting board, your favorite seasonings, a paring knife, and other go-to items that you can tote around the space as you cook.

3. Peg Board

If your oven also doubles as the storage space for your pots and pans, then it’s time to find a solution before you end up playing musical chairs with your cooking vessels. Peg board is a great way to make room for these items without the need for extra cabinet or counter space. Simply hang a sheet, paint it, grab your hooks, and start organizing. And don’t limit this kitchen DIY to only pots and pans – cooking utensils, cheese graters, colanders, and pretty much anything with a handle or a hole that doesn’t weigh a ton can be hung here, too. 4. Seating Solutions

Don’t be tempted to turn your shindig into a B.Y.O.C. event. Instead, create more seating from thrift store finds, or add a little personality to the barstools and chairs you already own. One great solution is to pick up some secondhand seating, even if they don’t match, and create continuity by painting them all the same color, or variations of the same, like they did over at A Beautiful Mess. And still going strong is the popular look of adding just a splash of color by dip dying the legs of chairs and barstools. Either way, these are top notch for a stylish eat-in kitchen.

5. Open Shelving

Open shelving is a great way to display your favorite kitchen possessions, allowing for more storage space in other areas. You can accomplish this by going the traditional thick wood shelf and bracket route, which is always a winner, or by trying something less conventional. Hanging metal baskets are perfect for storing produce, and wall-mounted crates are great rustic ways to display and store kitchen goods. The DIY from 11 Magnolia Lane turned out great!

6. Bar Cart

A cool bar cart, whether revamped from a small dresser, large nightstand, or just a really outdated original, is a great little piece to include in your kitchen. Putting it on casters, if it isn’t already, makes it mobile so you can trek it all around the house. When the holidays roll around, one handy way to make use of your bar cart is to set up a self-serve area with a signature cocktail or hot chocolate station that guests can interact with. 7. Freshen Up

Fresh fruits and veggies are instant kitchen brighteners. Help them stand out by grouping in a large bowl on your counter, or in a trio of glass jars. The vibrant color from a big vessel filled with lemons or green apples is always a nice touch. Another option is stand alone produce, like a gathering of pumpkins, whether decorated or as-is, displayed on your counter. Fresh cut flowers also provide an instant kitchen pick-me-up. Centered around using natural materials, this user-friendly book teaches its curious readers how to dye “yarn, fabric, and finished goods at home with foraged and garden-raised dyestuffs as well as with convenient natural dye extracts.” There are 20 different projects that cater to different crafting skill levels contained within. Whether you want to hone your dying skills, or you’re secretly in it for the gorgeous colorful photos contained within, this book would be a beautiful addition to any table.  

2. “Hungry Planet”, by Faith D’Alusio and Peter Menzel

This book explores the cultural diversity that exists when it comes to our diets. Photographer Menzel and author-journalist D’Alusio chronicled what 30 different families in 24 different countries ate for a week. This amounted to 600 meals in total, and it showed just how prevalent feast and famine really are. One family in Germany enjoyed chocolate croissants, cinnamon rolls, and beef with a $500 a week grocery budget, while a family in Mali, with 12 people in the household, lived on corn and millet with a $26.39 weekly allowance.

3. “Earth From Above”, by Yann Arthus-Bertrand

This UNESCO supported project is “the result of a five-year airborne odyssey across five continents and 60 countries, ‘Earth from Above’ is the most revealing and spectacular portrait of our world ever created.” A testament to the natural wonder, inner workings, and also the fragility of our planet, Arthus-Bertrand, renowned French aerial photographer, captured these moments in time beautifully. This coffee table book is sure to be an awe-inspiring experience.

4. “Finding Home: Shelter Dogs & Their Stories”, by Traer Scott

Scott published this eye-opening book as a follow up to her first, “Shelter Dogs.” Within these covers are the glorious, sorrowful, and sometimes hopeful black and white photographs of shelter dogs that Scott encountered as a volunteer. Alongside these pictures are the unique stories about their pre-shelter lives and what the future holds for these gentle creatures. If you’re a dog lover who wants nothing more than to save them all, then this is a book to consider.

5. “Make Garbage Great: The Terracycle Family Guide to a Zero-Waste Lifestyle“

From “a world leader in the upcycling And recycling movement,” Terracycle has published a book that’s considered the “household primer to going and staying green.” What’s different about this book, though, is that it’s chock full of more than 200 photographs and illustrations, and more than 100 tips and DIY projects that approach the upcycling subject in a very non-confrontational and user-friendly way. What’s great is that this book’s coffee table appeal means the ideas will always be handy since you won’t have to put it away on a shelf.

And, if you need a few tips on how to decorate with all of these new coffee table books (hint: layering is the secret), then consider the suggested arrangements below:

• Add color and style to a glass table by taking several books and covering the surface with about an inch in between each one, creating a grid-like “base” on which to place other items like bowls, small succulents, or a geode.

• Stack your coffee table books from largest in size to smallest in size, about four or five books in all, and then top them with something special like a treasured sculptural piece.

• Create a small vignette by using a serving tray, clear acrylic is very cool, that holds one of your favorite coffee table books, along with a few other objects that sit in the tray, too. Try a magnifying glass with a fancy handle, a small decorative box, and a golden urchin.

This summer bring a bit of the outdoors inside with one – or eleven – of our natural DIY crafts.

Have you been searching for some fresh DIY crafts to fill your summer weekends with? Then look no further because we’ve got you covered with some of the prettiest home decor revamps.

Although each project differs from the other, the running theme throughout is the use of at least one natural material. Whether it’s reliable wood, sleek stone, earthy jute, or glamorous agate, there are crafts here to suit a variety of skill levels and personal tastes. Each idea has an associated tutorial, which can be found linked in the header, so you can follow along and easily make these yourself.

1. River Rock Boot Tray

This is the perfect place to park wet rain boots or muddy shoes this summer. Simple and beautiful, this project can be more involved by creating a custom tray, or extremely fast by using a premade waterproof base like a rubber mat with a lip or plastic serving tray and filling with natural river rocks.

2. Geode Cabinet Knobs

This DIY is so glamorous and impactful, yet so simple and straightforward. Find a few of your favorite pieces of geode chunks or agate slices and adhere them to blank knob or pull bases and affix to your furniture.

3. Seashell Soap Dish

A great beachy addition to any bathroom is this seashell soap dish. With a large shell as the soap tray and a small one as the base, glue and patience is all you really need to complete this project. Once dry, pop in your favorite bar of soap and admire your craftiness every time you wash your hands.

4. Braided Jute Basket

This braided jute basket DIY requires some sewing skills and a sewing machine, but the outcome is really lovely. The instructions walk you through the process and the finished product would be the perfect vessel for carrying fresh flowers and other odds and ends.

5. Crystal Necklace Display

With just some craft wood, paint, glue, wall adhesive, and a selection of raw crystals you’ll have a beautiful necklace display, or three, to hang on your wall this summer. The best part is that it’s really as simple to assemble as it looks.

6. Burlap Pillow Covers

This one requires sewing skills, or some Heat’n Bond (shhhh, we won’t tell if you don’t), along with burlap, loose stuffing or a pillow insert, and a contrasting strip of fabric. If you’re not into the tan tone of the burlap, then paint it white first and choose a black and white geo print to make this pillow more modern.

7. Seashell Candles

Turn your treasures into a beautiful reminder of your seaside jaunts with shell candles. These would look great as part of a beach inspired tablescape and the easy to follow tutorial will tell you exactly how to execute.

8. Stone Door Mat

This is a project that has a really chic, rich looking outcome with just a few simple materials. Another plus is that it can be used as a front door mat or as a shower mat. If you plan on getting it wet, then choose a base that has holes in it for drainage or poke some in it yourself.

9. Jute Cord Camouflage

Ah, finally a solution for those awkwardly placed outlets causing your lamp cords to cut all kinds of crazy across the room. This tutorial shows you how to camouflage those unsightly strands with some hot glue and some jute twine.

10. Balsa Wood Lampshade

One of the coolest projects I’ve seen lately is this modern and natural unfinished balsa wood lampshade revamp. It’s another quick and easy DIY that has major impact. I especially love this blogger’s finished shade against her navy blue walls.

11. Wine Cork Bath Mat

Calling all wine drinkers! This easy DIY is simple, but requires around 175 corks, according to the blogger who shared this tutorial, so if you’ve got the materials, then you can also have a really nifty cork bath mat.
