So Gwyneth Paltrow has proven herself a legit health and wellness professional. Her collab with Juice Beauty now has the goop brand extending to skin care. Here’s a look at GP’s new beauty products.

When I heard Gwyneth and Juice Beauty teamed up to create skin care, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on them. Not only is GP hot on the health and wellness front these days, but who doesn’t want to know what she’s using on her skin?

The line includes cleanser, facial oil, moisturizer, night cream, and eye cream. Plus, the product I was most looking forward to sampling, a facial exfoliant. If you follow goop on Instagram you’ve likely seen GP modeling this product, which makes it all the more irresistible.

There are certain aspects of every skin care line that are important, aside from the contents. What do the products smell like? How do they feel? And will they look pretty sitting on my bathroom counter?

The goop products come in nice, generously sized containers (always a plus!), with a modern matte finish. They are lightly scented in a totally good way, and def look pretty enough to sit out. Now for the ultra important part … how they behave.

Luminous Melting Cleanser: You know how a cleansing oil or balm is better for removing makeup and the day from you face? This rich balm feels so luxurious going on to skin. I recently read that massaging the face in upward, circular motions helps to keep wrinkles at bay and this is the perfect time to work that into your routine. This cleanser makes skin feel clean, soft, and supple. Comes with a muslin cleansing cloth for easy removal.

Exfoliating Instant Facial: Definitely the star of the show, this exfoliant works in two ways. It is a creamy mixture with uber tiny granules to slough away dry, dead skin. But this skin smoother also contains fruit acids, plus alpha and hydroxy acids, to really get down to healthy skin and up the ol’ glow factor. I have sensitive skin and only leave this product on for around a minute. I would recommend using this one at night for smooth, radiant skin.

Enriching Facial Oil: Always my favorite component in any skin care line, this one does not disappoint. A mixture of yummy plant and seed oils that hydrate, plump, and support the skin. This oil blend gives skin a moisturized feel and healthy glow, but is super light and sinks right into skin. An ideal one-two punch for any facial oil.

Revitalizing Day Moisturizer: A light, non-greasy moisturizer for day designed to hydrate skin, fight wrinkles, and brighten the complexion. I love the softness and supple feel this moisturizer gives to skin, and it truly does seem to make the complexion look brighter.

Replenishing Night Cream: Every decent skin care routine needs a good night cream. This one is made with aloe vera and fruit acids to be both gentle and anti-aging. Reduces lines and firms the skin while you sleep.

Perfecting Eye Cream: A puffy soufflé of moisturizing eye cream that hydrates skin without being greasy. This one could be used day and night to keep lines at bay and brighten tired eyes.

goop by Juice Beauty products are made with some certified organic ingredients, ranging from 78%-99%, depending on the product. As for price, yes these babies run toward the higher end as you likely imagined given the celeb creator. We love to indulge in citrus (even Nebraska-grown citrus) in the summer because it is thirst quenching and refreshing. Did you know it also creates a pretty sweet complexion?

You’ve heard it since childhood. Drink your orange juice for vitamin C. Yes, citrus contains C. But it is also rich in vitamin B, folic acid, potassium, and calcium. Good for the body, to be sure.

How does this translate to skin care? Lemons, limes, grapefruit, and oranges are all added to beauty products as oils and extracts. These powerful ingredients are prized for their versatility and fresh scents.

The benefits of citrus skin care are many. These zesties are effective in clearing blemishes and clogged pores, brightening a sallow complexion, and adding glow to any skin type. They also include aromatherapeutic properties which boost the mood and immune system, ease anxiety, and decrease hypertension.

You may have heard that citrus oils are linked to photosensitivity. Citrus ingredients should be limited when spending time in direct sunlight, especially if you have sensitive skin or a history of sun-induced rash.

As for the issue surrounding grapefruit seed extract. First off, grapefruit seed extract (GSE) is not the same as grapefruit essential oil (which is a safe and beneficial ingredient extracted from the peel of grapefruits). You will see GSE used as a preservative in some natural brands, replacing parabens or other synthetics. The problem lies in the potential contaminants from the process used to make GSE, including hydrochloric acid and ammonium chloride. Bottom line, GSE is a safer choice than some of the other synthetic preservatives, but not a completely nontoxic ingredient. As always, follow brands and experts you trust.

Ladies and gentleman:  It’s time to make a new resolution. In honor of Earth Day, why not do something good for you AND the planet by making the switch to healthier, more sustainable, natural beauty and personal care products?

What does this mean?  It’s certainly a sliding scale, but in general, it means ditching toxin-laden products made by companies that don’t engage in responsible business practices in favor of healthier products made by companies that give a damn. You’d think it seems like common sense, however, it’s often easier said than done.

We women have a pretty deep connection with our beauty products, and I don’t just mean your foundation and lipstick. I’m also talking basic personal care: deodorant, shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, face and body care, and of course, cosmetics.  We find one we like, that works for us, and tend to stick with it like white on rice, ingredients be damned…it works!  Whether it’s the perfect stay-put, lash thickening mascara, your “signature” scent, or the under eye cream that keeps those bags at bay, most of us have at least one “can’t live without” beauty product (more likely several) and chances are, they might not be that good for you or the planet.

So what’s a girl to do?  Start with what you use the most and search hard for a healthier option made by a responsible company.  Scratch that one off the list and move on the next item.

Labeling in the natural beauty world is a lawless society.

The world of safe cosmetics is like a modern wild west, filled with outlawed ingredients, determined settlers, and wild, crazed shoot-outs. (See: the comment sections of any controversial beauty item.) And the new sheriff in town who is going to make everything right in the land? Cue dramatic music: there is no sheriff.

Call a product natural, and you’ll soon find evidence it’s not. Find something proclaiming itself organic, and maybe only 10 percent of the ingredients actually are organic. A product says it’s chemical-free? Then why are chemicals listed on the label?

It’s enough to make you want to hang up your sunbonnet (best chemical-free sun protection ever) and hide behind the skirts of your favorite schoolmarm.

Why the confusion? There are few to virtually no regulations on the ingredients we put in beauty products. In 2011, the Safe Cosmetics Bill was introduced to update the existing law on beauty regulation, which has not been revised since 1938. Rep. Jan Schakowsky, D-Ill, introduced the bill, noting “manufacturers are not required to disclose all their ingredients on labels, and the FDA has no power to supervise the use of toxic chemicals in cosmetics.”

So until this bill is passed, it’s up to us, the consumer, to figure out what to buy. It’s up to us to determine our own comfort level with ingredients. And foremost, it’s our decision on how natural we want to go with our products—since often times, products which proclaim themselves natural really aren’t.

Mia Davis, Vice President of Health and Safety for Beautycounter

I asked nationally-renown safe beauty expert Mia Davis to weigh in. Davis is the former Co-Director of the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics and current Vice President of Health and Safety for Beautycounter, a new beauty and skincare line. Recently, she shared her thoughts on natural beauty, safe cosmetics, and aging gracefully in a natural world.

Katherine Butler: Natural, organic, eco-friendly, green, and safe are all labels manufacturers use to sell their products. They all imply a level of cleanliness. What does it really mean for a product to say it is clean?

Mia Davis: A lot of time people are confused about that. They think “natural” and “organic” equals “clean” and “safe.” Many times, that’s the case. But to me, “clean” means safe—as in it’s not loaded with carcinogenic ingredients or petrochemicals that are harmful. Also, “natural” and “safe” are not mutually exclusive. I mean, poison ivy is organic and natural, as is lead.

KB: Good point. A lot of the unsafe ingredients are sometimes the ones that help a product perform. Do you have to sacrifice performance for clean ingredients?

MD: As a company, I think you have to work really hard to make sure that you are asking all the right questions to ensure that [your ingredients] are clean and safe—and performing. There’s another layer of complexity in formulating these products. As a consumer, you just really have to do your research and determine your own comfort level.

KB: Can’t we just trust that companies are telling the truth about their labeling?

MD: It’s really unfortunate how many companies are not fully disclosing their ingredients. When I was co-running the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, I heard from a lot of companies reporting on others that simply weren’t telling the truth, like “so and so are using hidden preservatives.” I wasn’t the cosmetics police, so there wasn’t much I could do. But as a consumer, I was horrified.

Now that I’m actually formulating products with a team of chemists for Beautycounter, I am shocked to learn how many chemicals have no safety data. I won’t name names, but there are several companies out there who are really marketing themselves on natural and organic products, and I would be willing to bet the farm that they are sourcing raw ingredients that are preloaded with petrochemical ingredients. Some aren’t harmful from a safety perspective. But from the consumer right-to-know perspective, it does worry me. They are marketing on something that isn’t true.

KB: What’s your take on more chemical-laden products like hair color and nail polish? Can you love doing your nails and still be committed to using natural products?

MD: I think it’s a spectrum. Hair color and nail polish are two of the products that tend to be the most chemically-laden and often hard to find a “natural” version. I prefer to say “less toxic” than chemical-free.

I think you just have to choose your battles and do what makes you feel good. I always push companies to make their products as least toxic as possible. I screen chemicals for safety, be they natural or synthetic. I want to be sure the ingredients in the products I use and promote are all okay for humans.

KB: So can you really fight fine lines, sunspots, without Botox or retinol?

MD: Well, you can prevent and minimize the look of fine lines—not permanently, but with makeup. That’s a version of fighting.

Can you fight these things with Botox or retinol? Yes, and people need to make their own decisions. But if you’re using something that is by definition toxic to fight an aesthetic result that you don’t like, you have to think about the long haul. Are you going to look better in the end by using a toxic chemical? We don’t know. You just have to do what you’re comfortable doing.

Plus, there are plant-based ways to help age gracefully. Vitamins E and C are really good for you. Seed oils are very nourishing and are great for prevention.

If you’re much older and have wrinkled skin, you probably won’t see a reversal. But that’s okay; shouldn’t we be more focused on aging gracefully?

KB: Hear hear! So how should the consumer keep herself informed in the lawless world of natural beauty?

MD: In the end, remember that “natural” could mean anything or nothing. Most people assume that the FDA or some other agency is backing up these claims, but none are.

In the food industry, companies get in trouble for calling something organic if it isn’t. This is not the case in beauty. So go out there and vote with your dollars. And ultimately, know we have to pass legislation so we don’t have to be so vigilant about labels. This industry hasn’t been regulated since 1938—it is high time we’ve do something, so we don’t have to have these conversations.

To deepen our understanding of the self care rituals, we caught up with Shel Pink, founder of the healthy beauty skin care and cosmetic line SpaRitual, which offers a huge collection of “five-free” (no formaldehyde, dibutyl phthalate, toluene, formaldehyde resin and camphor) vegan nail lacquers and a drool worthy range of spa-inspired natural skin care.

Aysia Wright: How did you get started in healthy beauty?

It is beauty rituals that are pleasurable, rather than painful and punitive.  Slow beauty helps people slow down and nurture the mind, body and spirit, therefore producing visible results. When we shift our mindset from the façade of quick fixes, invasive surgeries, and the illusion of perfectionism we have the freedom to discover joy, spontaneity, depth and vitality.  Slow Beauty includes seven outposts: spa tradition, rituals, nourished mind, self-expression, meditation, and mindful consumption. Each one offers opportunities to make lifestyle choices that help us to be in our hours, instead of being an age.

AW: How does Slow Beauty apply to the average women?

SP: First of all, there is no such thing as an average woman. We are dynamic beings. Slow Beauty applies to all women.  Internalizing a tyrannical approach to our beauty, and to aging compromises our power, and our right to live a truly creative life in process. AW: Beyond Spa Ritual, what are your go to brands & products that fit in with your Slow Beauty philosophy?

SP:  MSCHIC blush in “kissed.” This mineral makeup series is talcum-free and contains no allergenic fragrances. This blush is also paraben free. According to the company philosophy statement they dance at the office when they are excited about new products. I discovered this make-up line at an adorable boutique store called The Detox Market, they specialize in curating green brands in beauty and lifestyle.  The co-founder, Valerie Grandury, walked me around the shop and shared each brand’s endearing story with me. That leads me to introduce you to the skin care brand I love and use; Odacité. The products contain certified organic ingredients, and are free of petrochemicals, fragrance, glycols and parabens. The founder of this brand is also Valerie Grandury. She’s lovely and incredibly passionate about holistic living.

Teas are part of my beauty ritual too.
