Most consumer products are safe.
At-home HPV testing

HPV is a common sexually transmitted infection. So common that, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly all sexually active people will get the virus within their lifetime. Some strains of HPV can cause genital warts and other forms can cause cancers if left untreated. The virus is spread via anal, oral, or vaginal sex. And the virus is spread so easily because it can be transmitted when a person shows no symptoms of having it.

Most cases of HPV are only discovered in women, as there is no way to test for HPV in men. The only test that currently finds HPV is given to women who are 30 years of age or older. There is no way to test for HPV that may reside in a person’s mouth or throat.

Given these guidelines, you could imagine why health professionals would have concerns with the new, at-home HPV test that a woman can administer herself.

Skip the Eve Kit

The Eve Kit does seem to cover all its bases… When a woman receives a kit, she’s connected to a licensed doctor who will get the sample she provides to an accredited clinical lab. The doctor will follow up with results and any future recommendations.

However, when it comes to something like HPV, testing and diagnosis is best when left to the professionals.

“To me, this is as bad as googling,” Dr. Angela Jones, an OBGYN and Astroglide’s resident sexual health advisor, says.

“Positive results in the wrong hands can be really anxiety provoking. How does one ensure that the correct individuals are being screened? How is appropriate follow up ensured? What happens when further testing and workup such as a colposcopy is needed? The list of what-ifs goes on and on for me.”

And Kara Carpenter, Outreach Coordinator at STDcheck.com, adds that user error should be a major concern. “One study (linked to here) intentionally sent in STD infected specimens only to find out that half of their specimens tested negative,” Carpenter says.

Jones says she understands a person or company’s desire to develop a test that gives access to those who are in need and may not otherwise have access to testing. But she’s still concerned how abnormal tests and further HPV management will be handled. She also adds this incredibly important point: a HPV test DOES NOT replace a pap smear!

The penis sticker is the worst idea ever

Apparently, Jiftip, a new age “condom” company, is selling penis stickers. These stickers are designed to stop cum from emerging out of a man’s penis. However, the Jiftip site explains its stickers are only intended for novelty use and not for STI or pregnancy prevention.

You can say your product is for novelty use all you want. But put this crap in the hands of aggressive men who tell their partners that they just want to feel “real” sex, and disaster will inevitably occur.

And no surprise here: Health experts agree with our concern.

“The Jiftip is harmful to people’s health because men may say they are ‘wearing protection’ when in fact they are exposing their partner to harmful STDs,” Carpenter says.

“Additionally, the Jiftip site doesn’t say anywhere how accurate the product is so it could lead to unplanned pregnancies. When people intentionally remove a condom this is seen as stealthing which is illegal in several states.”

She adds that if people start getting pregnant after using the sticker, it could lead to a lot of controversies, similar to what was seen with the stealthing sensation. Especially if men are using the sticker to provide a false sense of security.

Jones also reminds us of this important fact: STIs, such as herpes and HPV, can be spread by skin to skin contact without the exchange of bodily fluids…

A reminder on how to prevent STIs

The only tried and true way to prevent STIs is with safe sex practices. “Even if you are on another form of contraception, some sort of barrier contraception should be utilized for STI prevention; such as condoms,” Jones says.

Jones also adds that it’s critical for people to have an open discussion with their partner about the nature of their sexual practices, too.

Looking for a reason to try BDSM? Or wondering why you can’t seem to get enough? We’ve got six different reasons explaining the benefits of kinky sex.

Sometimes we develop a fantasy that simply can’t be verbalized. A longing that we feel is so taboo we’re afraid to express our inner desires to our partner—and BDSM is one such arena where these reservations may fall.

Whether it’s the fear of rejection, fear of the unknown, or fear that we might actually love it, sharing these ideas can seem impossible. For some, this leads to a life of vanilla sex forever. For others, it becomes a liberating turning point to explore the type of sex life they’ve always wanted, even if that involves whips, rope, or submission. All of which, according to research, are actually quite good for your health and the health of your relationship.

The practice of BDSM represents conventionally taboo subsets involving bondage and discipline (B&D), dominance and submission (D&S), and sadism and masochism (S&M) that often (although not always) relate to sexual acts in and out of the bedroom. While it may be a fantasy more readily discussed behind closed doors, surveys show that aspects of it are actually desired by many.

A 2014 paper published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine asked more than 1,500 men and women to rate their interest in 55 sexual fantasies. Several BDSM-themed categories turned up, including fantasies about being dominated sexually (present in 65 percent of women and 53 percent of men), dominating someone sexually (47 percent of women and 60 percent of men), and being tied up for sexual pleasure (52 percent of women and 46 percent of men). Not only does this begin to verify the popularity of BDSM practices, but it also lets you know that you’re not alone in your kink.

When done correctly, and we’re not talking about “Fifty Shades of Grey“, partaking in BDSM is surprisingly good for you. Thanks to Medical Daily and their correspondence with various experts, we’ve got the lowdown on six of the benefits you can expect.

5 Reasons BDSM is Good for Your Health

1. Improves Communication and Increases Intimacy

Crediting the transparency that often accompanies a BDSM relationship, open, active, and clear communication are cornerstones for success. Between the use of “safe words” and the clear delineation between “play” (sometimes also known as a “scene”) and the day-to-day relationship, couples are required to identify when it’s time to get kinky, therefore discussing their sexuality far more often than some. Having sex increases intimacy, but throwing in a risk factor, like being tied up or blindfolded, increases it even more. What it comes down to is trust, which BDSM requires a lot of, and when the experiences go well, closeness is thought to be increased.

2. Encourages Fidelity

Because a healthy BDSM relationship requires trust that’s compounded over time, Dr. Jeffrey Sumber, a Chicago psychotherapist, believes that the individuals are less likely to stray, stating, “many who take it seriously are not interested in sabotaging the safety and trust that is imperative to its success.”

3. Better Mental Health

Citing a 2013 study from the Journal of Sexual Medicine, Medical Daily claims “people who practiced BDSM scored better on certain mental health indicators than those who had vanilla sex. The BDSM-friendly participants were less neurotic, more open, more aware of and sensitive to rejection, more secure in their relationships, and had a better overall well-being.” Furthermore, BDSM relationships have a lot of skin-to-skin contact, which one expert says promotes “physiological and physical healing.”

4. Reduces Psychological Stress

Believe it or not, being vulnerable during a BDSM session is actually said to leave participants feeling less stressed. Not only are the anxieties and insecurities we often feel during sex overcome by the ability to let go of judgement and control, but according to the aforementioned study, bottoms and tops (submissives and dominants) both had lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol after participating in bondage.

5. Reduces Anxiety

In addition to all of the other benefits, Medical Daily also pointed out that the “sexual enjoyment of giving or receiving pain can actually reduce anxiety even for the most anxious of souls in the bedroom.” And according to a separate study presented at the Society for Personality and Social Psychology in Austin, Texas, it was revealed that S&M changes the brain’s blood flow, sometimes contributing to an “altered state of consciousness” akin to a runner’s high or yoga. The tranquility felt by the participant (most likely a sub) is believed to be caused by the lack of blood flow to the the brain, therefore reducing anxiety.

The conclusion? When you explore your sexuality safely, legally, and openly, there are loads of benefits to feeling liberated and in touch with your inner desires—even if that means you like a good flogging every now and then.

Share your thoughts about BDSM on the EcoSalon Facebook page!

If you’re over the age of 30, you’re going to get tested for an HPV infection during your annual exam; and if you’ve had sex, you’re more than likely going to have this incredibly common, not-a-big-deal virus.

Right before I turned 31, I found out that I had an HPV infection. Back then, I had a lot of hangups about all things sexual, so, I totally freaked out. I assumed I was going to die of cancer, felt like a “dirty slut whore” — my actual words to my mother — and, in general, lost sleep for about a year.

My reaction was incredibly illogical because little did I know, I’d be living with the virus — like it or not — for the better part of three years.

While I admit I totally overreacted to my incredibly common diagnosis, I get why I did. In the past, I had dated men who had ridiculed past girlfriends for having the virus. I also was woefully undereducated about how the virus was transmitted. Sure, I always used condoms, but much like Lena Dunham’s character on “Girls,” I wasn’t totally clear on what viruses a person could contract while using a condom… Yeah, HPV is one of those viruses.

In addition to my personal hangups about sex, etc., I also was under the care of a doctor who was incredibly unprofessional — we’re talking me, smack-dab-in-the-middle-of-a-PTSD-flashback-with-my-feet-in-the-stirrups-while-she-ridicules-me-for-crying-during-a-colposcopy unprofessional.

Yeah, I was working against a lot when I got diagnosed. However, during the time I was “infected” with the virus, I did a lot of soul-searching and learned a lot about sexual health.

For example, if it wasn’t for this incredibly common diagnosis, I wouldn’t now know the following things:

1. You can, in fact, have a gynecologist who doesn’t belittle you while examining your bits. Since my horrible ordeal in that Kansas medical office, I’ve been to two other gynos who were the definition of professional and awesome. The first doctor treated my incredibly low-stage pre-cancer cells that were caused by HPV via a laser procedure. This doctor treated the virus like it was NBD, and actually listened when I said “take heed before you enter my vagina — I’m a sexual assault survivor.” Because of that, I got the best relatively pain-free care I’d ever received in my life.

The second doctor, my current gyro, is just as awesome. Her office is full of professional staff who laugh off STIs and preach to get tested and treated and forget about it — it’s a total no-judgement zone.

2. You can date people who don’t care about your diagnosis. Since receiving the news, I’ve told all my partners about my diagnosis. Now, this isn’t recommended because everyone most likely has HPV and the spread of it is incredibly difficult to prevent, but I’m the kind of person who shares everything — obviously — and I didn’t feel right about not talking about my diagnosis. And no matter what the dude you’re dating says: Men can get HPV and transmit the virus. There’s just not a test that men can take to identify the virus. Tell your man to take charge of his health by going to the doctor and dentist regularly, and checking for any bumps, lesions, etc. on his genitals, mouth, etc.

3. Some forms of HPV are invisible, so, unless you have the kind that causes warts or lesions, you may not know you have it. I had the kind that was invisible, so, I never would have known I had it. This is why regular gyno visits are so important.

4. You can get over the virus. This November, I found out that I’m now HPV-free. Most healthy people can get rid of this pesky virus after a year or so. Now, there’s no guarantee the virus won’t come back — HPV is a dick like that — but if it does show its ugly face again, I can get treatment for it and subsequently kick this virus’ ass.

So, don’t sweat it if you do ever get an HPV infection — it really isn’t a big deal. Just make sure you go to your gyro on the regular, stay up-to-date on current HPV prevention guidelines — and get vaccinated if you can — and don’t fear this stupid virus that is, basically, the common cold of STIs.

All the feels women have when they see a new penis.

When it comes to penises, what qualities are most important to a woman? Because the world would end as we know it without an answer to this question, researchers in Switzerland took one for the team and found out.

For the study, published in The Journal of Sexual Medicine, a group of 105 women, ages 16 to 45, were asked to rate the importance of eight specific penile characteristics on a 5-point scale (1 being very unimportant, and 5 being very important).

The findings suggest women find overall cosmetic appearance to be most important, followed by pubic hair, penile skin, penile girth, shape of glans, length, scrotum appearance, and “position and shape of meatus” (urethra).

The study was small, so the results shouldn’t be taken as gospel, but it makes sense that grooming took the top spot, and girth beat out length (because who wants to feel like they’re having sex with a rope?). Basically, when trying to determine what makes for a perfect penis, researchers found there was “no single penile aspect that is essential.”

That’s because women care more about the man attached to the penis. And no matter what it looks like, there’s something about seeing a new penis that makes us turn into giggly teenagers. On the one hand, we’re about to have sex, so yay, and on the other, we have this natural urge to do a product review before sexy time commences.

Here are just some of the thoughts women have when they see a new penis:

1. “So… there it is.”

2. “Wait, let me get my binoculars…”

3. “It’s like it’s staring at me.”

4. “Is there a user’s manual for this thing?”

5. “If I act too eager, will I scare it away?”

6. “There’s no way it’ll fit in my mouth.”

7. “Ugh, balls.”

8. “Please let that be an ingrown hair.”

9. “Note to self: Add ‘manscaping’ to your gratitude journal.”

10. “Does it always curve like that?”

11. “It’s go time.”

Masturbating is healthy—so why don’t we treat it like the rest of our healthy habits?

There are plenty of healthy habits we work hard to achieve—eating better food, getting more exercise, sleep, and downtime. We talk about them fondly, and often. And even though masturbating is as healthy for your bod as anything else, it doesn’t get as much airplay. On a to-do list, we place it in that microscopic footnote section we pretend isn’t there, like side effects to a medication.

Even though most women masturbate a minimum of once a week, we’re all hush-hush about it like there’s something wrong with us. No, you don’t have to dish on the exact play-by-play, but why get all uncomfortable if it comes up in conversation?

Here are 7 reasons you should (proudly!) enjoy a little menage a moi:

1. It’s a happiness booster

Word is orgasms release endorphins—specifically, dopamine and oxytocin—which can boost your mood and create a natural high.

2. It can improve your self-esteem

Studies have shown young women who masturbate on the regular view their sexuality in a positive light—especially when able to talk openly and honestly about it in a way that emphasizes the normalcy of giving yourself a hand.

3. It can relieve menstrual pain

This is not a drill: Masturbating releases certain hormones that can relieve menstrual pain. It also helps relax the muscles that are causing those icky cramps of yours. Cha. Ching.

4. It eases tension

If it’s been a while or you’ve had a particularly brutal day (or both), it’s a great way to satisfy your libido while relieving stress. Really, it’s multitasking at its finest.

5. It helps you sleep

If you suck at the whole sleep thing, you should for reals consider using masturbation as a sleep aid. Post-orgasm, your blood pressure lowers, your body relaxes and your mind clears—better than any sedative!

6. It improves your sex life

How are you going to have amazing sex with a partner if you have no idea what your likes and dislikes are? (As we already know, guys aren’t exactly mind readers.) If you don’t know how to turn yourself on, your love life’s going to turn into a really bad rom-com trying to find someone who can.

7. Uh, orgasms

What’s not to love about masturbating? As far as healthy habits go, it’s definitely the most fun. You won’t get pregnant. You can’t get an STD. You don’t have to deal with someone else’s needs. You don’t have to snuggle afterward. You can just get to the point and mosey on with your fabulously busy life.

Do you treat masturbating differently than the rest of your healthy habits?

The FDA approved the first birth control pills for women over 50 years ago. Soon after, 1 million women were taking birth control pills and today over 80 percent of women will take them sometime during their reproductive cycle.

Birth control pills have changed the face of a women’s career, given women a voice, and controlled the population, but according to a recent study in the Journal of Family Planning and Reproductive Health, modernizing birth control pills may still be too political for 2013. In this day and age are we still putting conservative politics before science? Seriously?!

Politics play a major role in the number of choices for better birth control, including the monthly birth control pill. It’s a hurdle that scientists have been forced to deal with as they seek safer and more effective methods. In a recent paper, health experts urged scientists to study methods of birth control after sex, or beyond the 72 hour pill that’s already available. Currently, birth control pill methods are designed to work by keeping sperm and egg separate, but they can also be effective after the egg is fertilized.

“A woman could potentially use a post-fertilization method on a planned schedule only once in each menstrual cycle, no matter how many prior coital acts she had had in that cycle,” wrote the authors, reported on Inquisitr.

Political opposition has delayed the development of such an after-sex birth control pill from reaching the market, however.

“Every day in clinical practice, at least one woman tells me she has discontinued use of hormonal contraception because ‘the pill makes me go crazy!'” Dr. Ellen Wiebe, a clinician and professor of reproductive health at University of British Columbia in Vancouver, who was not involved with the editorial, told LiveScience.

The ease of taking a monthly birth control pill is also a big plus for new research.

According to Bustle, “The problem, of course, is the politicians will likely jump to designate the scientifically feasible potential method as abortion.”

For many, the time for practical, non-political advancements are long overdue. We should be limited to the birth control pill that represented the only option for our mothers and grandmothers. It’s not the job of government to stand in the way of lifesaving contraceptives that allow women to make their own decisions about family planning. To deny us the best and safest that science has to offer, only continues to put women at risk.

ColumnYou meditate, practice yoga, eat organic quinoa, sip green juice and even shop sustainably. But there’s one more thing that you can (and you should, you really should) do regularly, one that’s more fun than all of the above: have an orgasm. When is the last time you had one?

Recent studies show that an orgasm a day can truly keep the doctor away. From pain relief to cardiac protection, the almighty orgasm is your new vitamin C – let’s call it vitamin O.

Here are just a few of the benefits of regular orgasms:

 -->

Increases pelvic floor strength. (I’ll take that over a Pilates mat class, thank you very much.)

Prevents cervical infections and helps relieve urinary tract infections.

Helps combat insomnia by releasing dopamine and oxytocin.

Increases cardiovascular health.

Cure for menstrual pain, again, thanks to oxytocin.

Burns up to 100 calories.

The ultimate stress-reliever.

Here’s what Dr. Pooja Lakshmin, a Stanford-trained neuroscientist, says about the power of orgasm:

“Orgasm is a naturally powerful physiological process. In orgasm, essentially all systems of the brain are highly activated, including the insula, amygdala, and somatosensory cortex. The limbic system, a full one-third of the brain that feels visceral sensation seems to facilitate human connection – reading faces, interpreting tone of voice, picking up non-verbal cues – it also becomes activated… As the entire nervous system, from brain to peripheral nerves becomes activated, the parasympathetic and sympathetic divisions of the nervous system are simultaneously activated. Through orgasm, you can feel “gut responses” at a deep, physiological level.”

But, you’re saying to yourself, I haven’t been able to have an orgasm during sex with my new (or old) partner. Or, wait a second – I’m totally single right now. Yes, it’s true that having an orgasm during vaginal penetration or other forms of partnered sex isn’t possible for all women (we’ll work on this perfectly normal, common issue in a future column). Your relationship status doesn’t mean you can’t have regular orgasms, dear. You have hands, don’t you? You may even have a sex toy in your night table drawer (vibrators, incidentally, will also be covered soon in this space). Everyone jumps to the conclusion that sex requires someone else in the room, but all a good session requires is a stimulating tool and your own imagination. Solo sex is still sex, and it can be great sex, according to the legendary Betty Dodson, author of Sex For One: The Joy of Self Loving.

Yet knowing that orgasms are the ticket to good health shouldn’t be a source of stress (to be checked off next to “buy goji berries” on your to-do list). They’re more like a nice hot bath, a glass of Pinot, or a handful of dark, luscious chocolate. All of these health-boosting activities are the sort of thing you look forward to all day, especially when busy with other, much less lovely tasks. That said, if having an orgasm every single day feels like too much to start, why not aim for one a week?

We’ve just scratched the surface of physiological benefits of orgasm here. But just like exercise, even if you have to make yourself do it at first, masturbating regularly can improve your self-worth over time. Much of sex, and masturbation in particular, carries a patina a shame, even if it’s deeply buried in your subconscious. So for now, if you must, tell yourself you need to have an orgasm, just because it’s easier than Pilates. But down the line, your overall sexual health, in partnered sex, is bound to improve. Claim your pleasure, and join the Sexual Revolution 2.0 – because it’s happening whether or not you choose to participate.

Whether or not you’re currently involved, and hell – if your lover is sleeping next to you, but you didn’t receive an orgasm from him or her tonight – go get your own, girl. It’s in your own hands.

Speaking of the power of orgasm, check this out:

THE ORGASM EXPERIENCE: ONETASTE PRESENTS LARGEST CONFERENCE ON FEMALE ORGASM: AUGUST 2013 IN SAN FRANCISCO

On August 9th,10th, and 11th one-thousand orgasm enthusiasts from all over the world will come together at the Regency Center in San Francisco to learn about, discuss, and discover the medical benefits of female orgasm. In particular, presenting medical doctors, authors, and conference participants will focus on a fifteen minute ‘practice’ that is rapidly gaining popularity in the US and abroad named ‘Orgasmic Meditation’ or ‘OM.’ Orgasmic Meditation (OM) has been featured in media outlets such as Cosmopolitan, the New York Times, Playboy and South By South West. http://thetimefororgasm.us/

For most of us, it was awkward, if not downright awful. And new research finds that how we lost our virginity can impact our sexuality for the rest of our lives.

It’s a rite of passage. Going from pre-pubescent “ew!” to teen or early adulthood “ah!” as we mostly stumble over hyper hormonal urges in hopes of some romantic fairytale happens in most cases, to all of us. Losing your virginity is rarely the stuff of steamy hot movie sex scenes—quite the contrary. For women, it’s often painful and even scary. For men, it can be a challenge to masculinity—a defining, primal moment encumbered by embarrassment and awe.

Researchers at the Universities of Tennessee and Mississippi set out to find just how much our first sexual encounter impacts our sexual behavior later in life. The paper, published in the Journal of Sex & Marital Therapy, looked at more than 300 men and women, particularly focusing on the way they lost their virginity. The researchers wanted to know about the satisfaction of the experience, the level of anxiety or connection they felt with their partner, and how they behaved immediately following intercourse.

The researchers also had the subjects rate their current sex lives on similar levels, noting their feelings of control, satisfaction and overall well-being. Were they being respected? Honored? Achieving their sexual goals? They then recorded their sexual experiences in a diary for the following two weeks, noting again reactions to various sexual encounters.

When all the data was compiled, the researchers noted a trend: those who had positive first-time sexual encounters were more likely to continue having satisfying interactions through life. Those who experienced anxiety or negativity during their first sexual encounter were more likely to be more sexually dysfunctional and unsatisfied in future sexual relationships. The findings suggest that, while not conclusive, initial sexual experiences could have long-term implications on sexual satisfaction and ultimately, relationships.
